Weak integrability breaking and level spacing distribution

Recently it was suggested that certain perturbations of integrable spin chains lead to a weak breaking of integrability in the sense that integrability is preserved at the first order in the coupling. Here we examine this claim using level spacing distribution. We find that the volume dependent crossover between integrable and chaotic level spacing statistics which marks the onset of quantum chaotic behaviour, is markedly different for weak vs. strong breaking of integrability. In particular, for the gapless case we find that the crossover coupling as a function of the volume $L$ scales with a $1/L^2$ law for weak breaking as opposed to the $1/L^3$ law previously found for the strong case.

The propagator of the finite XXZ spin-$\tfrac{1}{2}$ chain

We derive contour integral formulas for the real space propagator of the spin-$\tfrac12$ XXZ chain. The exact results are valid in any finite volume with periodic boundary conditions, and for any value of the anisotropy parameter. The integrals are on fixed contours, that are independent of the Bethe Ansatz solution of the model and the string hypothesis. The propagator is obtained by two different methods. First we compute it through the spectral sum of a deformed model, and as a by-product we also compute the propagator of the XXZ chain perturbed by a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction term. As a second way we also compute the propagator through a lattice path integral, which is evaluated exactly utilizing the so-called $F$-basis in the mirror (or quantum) channel. The final expressions are similar to the Yudson representation of the infinite volume propagator, with the volume entering as a parameter. As an application of the propagator we compute the Loschmidt amplitude for the quantum quench from a domain wall state.

Exact boundary free energy of the open XXZ chain with arbitrary boundary conditions

We derive an exact formula for the boundary free energy of the open Heisenberg XXZ spin chain. We allow for arbitrary boundary magnetic fields, but assume zero bulk magnetization. The result is completely analogous to earlier formulas for the so-called $g$-function: it is expressed as a combination of single integrals and two simple Fredholm determinants. Our expressions can be evaluated easily using numerical algorithms with arbitrary precision. We demonstrate that the boundary free energy can show a wide variety of behaviour as a function of the temperature, depending on the anisotropy and the boundary fields. We also compute the low temperature limit of the boundary free energy, and reproduce the known results for the ground state boundary energy, including the case of non-diagonal fields.

LeClair-Mussardo series for two-point functions in Integrable QFT

We develop a well-defined spectral representation for two-point functions in relativistic Integrable QFT in finite density situations, valid for space-like separations. The resulting integral series is based on the infinite volume, zero density form factors of the theory, and certain statistical functions related to the distribution of Bethe roots in the finite density background. Our final formulas are checked by comparing them to previous partial results obtained in a low-temperature expansion. It is also show that in the limit of large separations the new integral series factorizes into the product of two LeClair-Mussardo series for one-point functions, thereby satisfying the clustering requirement for the two-point function.

Overlaps with arbitrary two-site states in the XXZ spin chain

We present a conjectured exact formula for overlaps between the Bethe states of the spin-1/2 XXZ chain and generic two-site states. The result takes the same form as in the previously known cases: it involves the same ratio of two Gaudin-like determinants, and a product of single-particle overlap functions, which can be fixed using a combination of the Quench Action and Quantum Transfer Matrix methods. Our conjecture is confirmed by numerical data from exact diagonalization. For one-site states the formula is found to be correct even in chains with odd length, where existing methods can not be applied. It is also pointed out, that the ratio of the Gaudin-like determinants plays a crucial role in the overlap sum rule: it guarantees that in the thermodynamic limit there remains no $\mathcal{O}(1)$ piece in the Quench Action.

On Generalized Gibbs Ensembles with an infinite set of conserved charges

We revisit the question of whether and how the steady states arising after non-equilibrium time evolution in integrable models (and in particular in the XXZ spin chain) can be described by the so-called Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE). It is known that the micro-canonical ensemble built on a complete set of charges correctly describes the long-time limit of local observables, and recently a canonical ensemble was built by Ilievski et. al. using particle occupation number operators. Here we provide an alternative construction by considering truncated GGE's (tGGE's) that only include a finite number of well localized conserved operators. It is shown that the tGGE's can approximate the steady states with arbitrary precision, i.e. all physical observables are exactly reproduced in the infinite truncation limit. In addition, we show that a complete canonical ensemble can in fact be built in terms of a new (discrete) set of charges built as linear combinations of the standard ones. Our general arguments are applied to concrete quench situations in the XXZ chain, where the initial states are simple two-site or four-site product states. Depending on the quench we find that numerical results for the local correlators can be obtained with remarkable precision using truncated GGE's with only 10-100 charges.

Excited state correlations of the finite Heisenberg chain

We consider short range correlations in excited states of the finite XXZ and XXX Heisenberg spin chains. We conjecture that the known results for the factorized ground state correlations can be applied to the excited states too, if the so-called physical part of the construction is changed appropriately. For the ground state we derive simple algebraic expressions for the physical part; the formulas only use the ground state Bethe roots as an input. We conjecture that the same formulas can be applied to the excited states as well, if the exact Bethe roots of the excited states are used instead. In the XXZ chain the results are expected to be valid for all states (except certain singular cases where regularization is needed), whereas in the XXX case they only apply to singlet states or group invariant operators. Our conjectures are tested against numerical data from exact diagonalization and coordinate Bethe Ansatz calculations, and perfect agreement is found in all cases. In the XXX case we also derive a new result for the nearest-neighbour correlator $\{σ_1^zσ_2^z\}$, which is valid for non-singlet states as well. Our results build a bridge between the known theory of factorized correlations, and the recently conjectured TBA-like description for the building blocks of the construction.

Exact finite volume expectation values of local operators in excited states

We present a conjecture for the exact expression of finite volume expectation values in excited states in integrable quantum field theories, which is an extension of an earlier conjecture to the case of general diagonal factorized scattering with bound states and a nontrivial bootstrap structure. The conjectured expression is a spectral expansion which uses the exact form factors and the excited state thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz as building blocks. The conjecture is proven for the case of the trace of the energy-moment tensor. Concerning its validity for more general operators, we provide numerical evidence using the truncated conformal space approach. It is found that the expansion fails to be well-defined for small values of the volume in cases when the singularity structure of the TBA equations undergoes a non-trivial rearrangement under some critical value of the volume. Despite these shortcomings, the conjectured expression is expected to be valid for all volumes for most of the excited states, and as an expansion above the critical volume for the rest.

Quenching the XXZ spin chain: quench action approach versus generalized Gibbs ensemble

Following our previous work [PRL 113 (2014) 09020] we present here a detailed comparison of the quench action approach and the predictions of the generalized Gibbs ensemble, with the result that while the quench action formalism correctly captures the steady state, the GGE does not give a correct description of local short-distance correlation functions. We extend our studies to include another initial state, the so-called q-dimer state. We present important details of our construction, including new results concerning exact overlaps for the dimer and q-dimer states, and we also give an exact solution of the quench-action-based overlap-TBA for the q-dimer. Furthermore, we extend our computations to include the xx spin correlations besides the zz correlations treated previously, and give a detailed discussion of the underlying reasons for the failure of the GGE, especially in the light of new developments.

Correlations after quantum quenches in the XXZ spin chain: Failure of the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble

We study the nonequilibrium time evolution of the spin-1/2 anisotropic Heisenberg (XXZ) spin chain, with a choice of dimer product and Neel states as initial states. We investigate numerically various short-ranged spin correlators in the long-time limit and find that they deviate significantly from predictions based on the generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE) hypotheses. By computing the asymptotic spin correlators within the recently proposed quench-action formalism [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 257203 (2013)], however, we find excellent agreement with the numerical data. We, therefore, conclude that the GGE cannot give a complete description even of local observables, while the quench-action formalism correctly captures the steady state in this case.

Quantum quenches and Generalized Gibbs Ensemble in a Bethe Ansatz solvable lattice model of interacting bosons

We consider quantum quenches in the so-called $q$-boson lattice model. We argue that the Generalized Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis holds in this model, therefore the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE) gives a valid description of the stationary states in the long time limit. For a special class of initial states (which are the pure Fock states in the local basis) we are able to provide the GGE predictions for the resulting root densities. We also give predictions for the long-time limit of certain local operators. In the $q\to\infty$ limit the calculations simplify considerably, the wave functions are given by Schur polynomials and the overlaps with the initial states can be written as simple determinants. In two cases we prove rigorously that the GGE prediction for the root density is correct. Moreover, we calculate the exact time dependence of a physical observable (the one-site Emptiness Formation Probability) for the quench starting from the state with exactly one particle per site. In the long-time limit the GGE prediction is recovered.

Failure of the Generalized Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis in integrable models with multiple particle species

It has been recently observed for a particular quantum quench in the XXZ spin chain that local observables do not equilibrate to the predictions of the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE). In this work we argue that the breakdown of the GGE can be attributed to the failure of the Generalized Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (GETH), which has been the main candidate to explain the validity of the GGE. We provide explicit counterexamples to the GETH and argue that generally it does not hold in models with multiple particle species. Therefore there is no reason to assume that the GGE should describe the long time limit of observables in these integrable models.

Short distance correlators in the XXZ spin chain for arbitrary string distributions

In this letter we consider expectation values of local correlators in highly excited states of the spin-1/2 XXZ chain. Assuming that the string hypothesis holds we formulate the following conjecture: The correlation functions can be computed using the known factorized formulas of the finite temperature situation, if the building blocks are computed via certain linear integral equations using the string densities only. We prove this statement for the nearest neighbour z-z correlator for states with arbitrary string densities. Also, we check the conjecture numerically for other correlators in the finite temperature case. Our results pave the way towards the computation of the stationary values of correlators in non-equilibrium situations using the so-called quench-action approach.

Overlaps between eigenstates of the XXZ spin-1/2 chain and a class of simple product states

We consider a class of quantum quenches in the spin-1/2 XXZ chain, where the initial state is of a simple product form. Specific examples are the Néel state, the dimer state and the q-deformed dimer state. We compute determinant formulas for finite volume overlaps between the initial state and arbitrary eigenstates of the spin chain Hamiltonian. These results could serve as a basis for calculating the time dependence of correlation functions following the quantum quench.

Dynamical free energy and the Loschmidt-echo for a class of quantum quenches in the Heisenberg spin chain

We consider a class of global quantum quenches in the Heisenberg XXZ spin chain, where the initial states are given by products of local two-site states. The two main examples are the Néel state and the dimer state. We derive an exact analytic result for the "Loschmidt echo per site" at imaginary times and also consider the analytic continuation back to real times. As a by-product we obtain an exact result for the "overlap per site" between the Néel state and the ground state of the XXZ Hamiltonian in the massive regime.

Surface free energy of the open XXZ spin-1/2 chain

We study the boundary free energy of the XXZ spin-$\tf{1}{2}$ chain subject to diagonal boundary fields. We first show that the representation for its finite Trotter number approximant obtained by Bortz, Frahm and Göhmann is related to the partition function of the six-vertex model with reflecting ends. Building on the Tsuchiya determinant representation for the latter quantity we are able to take the infinite Trotter number limit. This yields a representation for the surface free energy which involves the solution of the non-linear integral equation that governs the thermodynamics of the XXZ spin-1/2 chain subject to periodic boundary conditions. We show that this integral representation allows one to extract the low-$T$ asymptotic behavior of the boundary magnetization at finite external magnetic field on the one hand and numerically plot this function on the other hand.

Local correlations in the 1D Bose gas from a scaling limit of the XXZ chain

We consider the K-body local correlations in the (repulsive) 1D Bose gas for general K, both at finite size and in the thermodynamic limit. Concerning the latter we develop a multiple integral formula which applies for arbitrary states of the system with a smooth distribution of Bethe roots, including the ground state and finite temperature Gibbs-states. In the cases K<=4 we perform the explicit factorization of the multiple integral. In the case of K=3 we obtain the recent result of Kormos et.al., whereas our formula for K=4 is new. Numerical results are presented as well.
