Hadronic Parity Violation

The history and phenomenology of hadronic parity nonconservation (PNC) is reviewed. We discuss the current status of the experimental tests and theory. We describe a re-analysis of the asymmetry for polarized proton-proton scattering that, when combined with other experimental constraints and with a recent lattice QCD calculation of the weak pion-nucleon coupling, reveals a much more consistent pattern of PNC couplings. In particular, isoscalar coupling strengths are similar to but somewhat larger than the "best value" estimate of Donoghue, Desplanques, and Holstein, while both lattice QCD and experiment indicate a suppressed parity-nonconserving pion-nucleon coupling. We discuss the relationship between meson-exchange models of hadronic PNC and formulations based on effective theory, stressing their general compatibility as well as the challenge presented to theory by experiment, as several of the most precise measurements involve significant momentum scales. Future directions are proposed.

Sum Rules for Magnetic Moments and Polarizabilities in QED and Chiral Effective-Field Theory

We elaborate on a recently proposed extension of the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule which is achieved by taking derivatives with respect to the anomalous magnetic moment. The new sum rule features a {\it linear} relation between the anomalous magnetic moment and the dispersion integral over a cross-section quantity. We find some analogy of the linearized form of the GDH sum rule with the `sideways dispersion relations'. As an example, we apply the linear sum rule to reproduce the famous Schwinger's correction to the magnetic moment in QED from a tree-level cross-section calculation and outline the procedure for computing the two-loop correction from a one-loop cross-section calculation. The polarizabilities of the electron in QED are considered as well by using the other forward-Compton-scattering sum rules. We also employ the sum rules to study the magnetic moment and polarizabilities of the nucleon in a relativistic chiral EFT framework. In particular we investigate the chiral extrapolation of these quantities.

An EFT for the weak $ΛN$ interaction

The nonleptonic weak $|ΔS|=1$ $ΛN$ interaction, responsible for the dominant, nonmesonic decay of all but the lightest hypernuclei, is studied in the framework of an effective field theory. The long-range physics is described through tree-level exchange of the SU(3) Goldstone bosons ($π$ and $K$), while the short-range potential is parametrized in terms of lowest-order contact terms obtained from the most general non-derivative local four-fermion interaction. Fitting to available weak hypernuclear decay rates for $^5_Λ{\rm He}$, $^{11}_Λ{\rm B}$ and $^{12}_Λ{\rm C}$ yields reasonable values for the low-energy constants.

Nuclear Parity-Violation in Effective Field Theory

We reformulate the analysis of nuclear parity-violation (PV) within the framework of effective field theory (EFT). To order Q, the PV nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction depends on five a priori unknown constants that parameterize the leading-order, short-range four-nucleon operators. When pions are included as explicit degrees of freedom, the potential contains additional medium- and long-range components parameterized by PV piNN couplings. We derive the form of the corresponding one- and two-pion-exchange potentials. We apply these considerations to a set of existing and prospective PV few-body measurements that may be used to determine the five independent low-energy constants relevant to the pionless EFT and the additional constants associated with dynamical pions. We also discuss the relationship between the conventional meson-exchange framework and the EFT formulation, and argue that the latter provides a more general and systematic basis for analyzing nuclear PV.

Lowest Order Effective Field Theory for the weak $ΛN$ interaction

The $|ΔS|=1$ $ΛN$ interaction, responsible for the decay of hypernuclei, is studied by means of an Effective Field Theory where the long range physics is described by pion and kaon exchange mechanisms, and its short range counterpart is obtained from the most general non-derivative local four-fermion interaction. We show that, including the Lowest Order Parity Conserving contact terms, allows us to reproduce the total decay rates for $^5_Λ{\rm He}$, $^{11}_Λ{\rm B}$ and $^{12}_Λ{\rm C}$ with a reasonable value of ${\hat χ^2}$, while in order to get a prediction for the Parity Violating (PV) asymmetry compatible with experiments, we have to include the Lowest Order PV contact pieces.

Long distance regularization in chiral perturbation theory with decuplet

We investigate the use of long distance regularization in SU(3) baryon chiral perturbation theory with decuplet fields. The one-loop decuplet contributions to the octet baryon masses, axial couplings, S-wave nonleptonic hyperon decays and magnetic moments are evaluated in a chirally consistent fashion by employing a cutoff to implement long distance regularization. The convergence of the chiral expansions of these quantities is improved compared to the dimensionally regularized version which indicates that the propagation of Goldstone bosons over distances smaller than a typical hadronic size, which is beyond the regime of chiral perturbation theory but included by dimensional regularization, is removed by use of a cutoff.

The decay pi0 to gamma gamma to next to leading order in Chiral Perturbation Theory

The two photon decay width of the neutral pion is analyzed within the combined framework of Chiral Perturbation Theory and the 1/Nc expansion up to order p^6 and p^4 times 1/Nc in the decay amplitude. The eta' is explicitly included in the analysis. It is found that the decay width is enhanced by about 4.5% due to the isospin-breaking induced mixing of the pure U(3) states. This effect, which is of leading order in the low energy expansion, is shown to persist nearly unchanged at next to leading order. The chief prediction for the width with its estimated uncertainty is 8.10+-0.08 eV. This prediction at the 1% level makes the upcomming precision measurement of the decay width even more urgent. Observations on the eta and eta' can also be made, especially about their mixing, which is shown to be significantly affected by next to leading order corrections.

Parity Violating Photoproduction of $π^\pm$ on the $Δ$ Resonance

We analyze the real photon asymmetry $A^\pm_γ$ for the parity violating (PV) $π^\pm$ production on the $Δ$ resonance via the reactions ${\vec γ} + p \to Δ^+ \to π^+ + n$ and ${\vec γ} + d \to Δ^0 + p \to π^- + p + p$. This asymmetry is nonvanishing due to a PV $γN Δ$ coupling constant, $d^\pm_Δ$. We argue that an experimental determination of this coupling would be of interest for hadron dynamics, possibly shedding light on the S-wave/P-wave puzzle in the hyperon nonleptonic decays and the violation of Hara's theorem in weak radiative hyperon decays.

Electroweak Radiative Corrections to Parity-Violating Electroexcitation of the $Δ$

We analyze the degree to which parity-violating (PV) electroexcitation of the $Δ(1232)$ resonance may be used to extract the weak neutral axial vector transition form factors. We find that the axial vector electroweak radiative corrections are large and theoretically uncertain, thereby modifying the nominal interpretation of the PV asymmetry in terms of the weak neutral form factors. We also show that, in contrast to the situation for elastic electron scattering, the axial $N\toΔ$ PV asymmetry does not vanish at the photon point as a consequence of a new term entering the radiative corrections. We argue that an experimental determination of these radiative corrections would be of interest for hadron structure theory, possibly shedding light on the violation of Hara's theorem in weak, radiative hyperon decays.

Subleading corrections to parity violating pion photoproduction

We compute the photon asymmetry $B_γ$ for near threshold parity violating (PV) pion photoproduction through sub-leading order. We show that sub-leading contributions involve a new combination of PV couplings not included in previous analyses of hadronic PV. We argue that existing constraints on the leading order contribution to $B_γ$ -- obtained from the PV $γ$-decay of $^{18}$F -- suggest that the impact of the subleading contributions may be more significant than expected from naturalness argumen

Nucleon Structure and Parity-Violating Electron Scattering

We review the area of strange quark contributions to nucleon structure. In particular, we focus on current models of strange quark vector currents in the nucleon and the associated parity-violating elastic electron scattering experiments from which vector- and axial-vector currents are extracted

Chiral Symmetry and the Parity-Violating $NNπ$ Yukawa Coupling

We construct the complete SU(2) parity-violating (PV) $π, N, Δ$ interaction Lagrangian with one derivative, and calculate the chiral corrections to the PV Yukawa $NNπ$ coupling constant $h_π$ through ${\cal O}(1/Λ_χ^3)$ in the leading order of heavy baryon expansion. We discuss the relationship between the renormalized $\hpi$, the measured value of $\hpi$, and the corresponding quantity calculated microscopically from the Standard Model four-quark PV interaction.

The Nucleon Anapole Moment and Parity-Violating ep Scattering

Parity-violating (PV) interactions among quarks in the nucleon induce a PV $γNN$ coupling, or anapole moment (AM). We compute electroweak gauge-independent contributions to the AM through ${\cal O}(1/\lamchis)$ in chiral perturbation theory. We estimate short-distance PV effects using resonance saturation. The AM contributions to PV electron-proton scattering slightly enhance the axial vector radiative corrections, R_A^p, over the scale implied by the Standard Model when weak quark-quark interactions are neglected. We estimate the theoretical uncertainty associated with the AM contributions to R_A^p to be large, and discuss the implications for the interpretation PV of ep scattering.

Generalized Polarizabilities of the Nucleon in Chiral Effective Theories

Using the techniques of chiral effective field theories we evaluate the so called generalized polarizabilities of the nucleon, which characterize the structure dependent components in virtual Compton scattering (VCS) as probed in the electron scattering reaction e N \to e' N gamma. Results are given for both spin-dependent and spin-independent structure effects to O(p^3) in SU(2) Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory and to O(epsilon^3) in the SU(2) Small Scale Expansion. Finally we compare our calculations with results from the pioneering VCS experiment on the proton from Mainz.

Resonances in radiative hyperon decays

The importance of resonances for the radiative hyperon decays is examined in the framework of chiral perturbation theory. Low lying baryon resonances are included into the effective theory and tree contributions to these decays are calculated. We find significant contributions to both the parity-conserving and parity-violating decay amplitudes and a large negative value for the asymmetry parameter in polarized Sigma^+ -> p gamma is found, in agreement with the experimental result alpha(p Sigma^+) = -0.76 +/- 0.08.

The role of resonances in non-leptonic hyperon decays

We examine the importance of resonances for the non-leptonic hyperon decays in the framework of chiral perturbation theory. Lower lying resonances are included into the effective theory. Integrating out the heavy degrees of freedom in the resonance saturation scheme generates higher order counterterms in the effective Lagrangian, providing an estimate of the pertinent coupling constants. A fit to the eight independent decay amplitudes that are not related by isospin symmetry is performed and reasonable agreement for both s- and p- waves is achieved.
