Non-Perturbative Corrections to Heavy Quark Fragmentation in e^+e^- Annihilation

We estimate the non-perturbative power-suppressed corrections to heavy flavour fragmentation and correlation functions in e^+e^- annihilation, using a model based on the analysis of one-loop Feynman graphs containing a massive gluon. This approach corresponds to the study of infrared renormalons in the large-n_f limit of QCD, or to the assumption of an infrared-finite effective coupling at low scales. We find that the leading corrections to the heavy quark fragmentation function are of order $λ/M$, where $λ$ is a typical hadronic scale ($λ\sim 0.4$ GeV) and M is the heavy quark mass. The inclusion of higher corrections corresponds to convolution with a universal function of M(1-x) concentrated at values of its argument of order $λ$, in agreement with intuitive expectations. On the other hand, corrections to heavy quark correlations are very small, of the order of $(λ/Q)^p$, where Q is the centre-of-mass energy and $p \ge 2$.

Power Corrections and Renormalons in $e^+e^-$ Fragmentation Functions

We estimate the power corrections (infrared renormalon contributions) to the coefficient functions for the transverse, longitudinal and asymmetric fragmentation functions in $e^+e^-$ annihilation, using a method based on the analysis of one-loop Feynman graphs containing a massive gluon. The leading corrections have the expected $1/Q^2$ behaviour, but the gluonic coefficients of the longitudinal and transverse contributions separately have strong singularities at small $x$, which cancel in their sum. This leads to $1/Q$ corrections to the longitudinal and transverse parts of the annihilation cross section, which cancel in the total cross section.

Deep Inelastic Scattering -- Theory and Phenomenology

Recent developments in theory and phenomenology relevant to deep inelastic lepton scattering are reviewed, concentrating on the following topics: Predicted behaviour of non-singlet and polarized structure functions at small $x$; Theoretical studies of saturation and unitarity effects at small $x$ in quarkonium scattering; Renormalons and higher twist contributions; Next-to-leading-order calculations of jet cross sections; Forward jet production as a probe of small-$x$ dynamics.

HERWIG version 5.9

HERWIG (Hadron Emission Reactions With Interfering Gluons) is a multipurpose Monte Carlo event generator for the simulation of hard collisions between hadrons, leptons and photons. This note describes the new features of version 5.9. These include adding over 100 new particles, 1800 new decay modes and supporting new decay types. A complete space-time picture, including heavy meson mixing and secondary decays, is available for all event types and includes an optional colour rearrangement model. Initial state radition of photons in e^+e^- is is now included. Many other processes and features have been upgraded.

Power Corrections and Renormalons in Deep Inelastic Structure Functions

We study the power corrections (infrared renormalon contributions) to the coefficient functions for non-singlet deep inelastic structure functions due to gluon vacuum polarization insertions in one-loop graphs. Remarkably, for all the structure functions $F_1$, $F_2$, $F_3$ and $g_1$, there are only two such contributions, corresponding to $1/Q^2$ and $1/Q^4$ power corrections. We compute their dependence on Bjorken $x$. The results could be used to model the dominant higher-twist contributions.

QCD

We discuss QCD studies that will be possible at LEP2. We examine both experimental and theoretical aspects of jets, fragmentation functions, multiplicities and particle spectra.

Dispersive Approach to Power-Behaved Contributions in QCD Hard Processes

We consider power-behaved contributions to hard processes in QCD arising from non-perturbative effects at low scales which can be described by introducing the notion of an infrared-finite effective coupling. Our method is based on a dispersive treatment which embodies running coupling effects in all orders. The resulting power behaviour is consistent with expectations based on the operator product expansion, but our approach is more widely applicable. The dispersively-generated power contributions to different observables are given by (log-)moment integrals of a universal low-scale effective coupling, with process-dependent powers and coefficients. We analyse a wide variety of quark-dominated processes and observables, and show how the power contributions are specified in lowest order by the behaviour of one-loop Feynman diagrams containing a gluon of small virtual mass. We discuss both collinear safe observables (such as the e+e- total cross section and τhadronic width, DIS sum rules, e+e- event shape variables and the Drell-Yan K-factor) and collinear divergent quantities (such as DIS structure functions, e+e- fragmentation functions and the Drell-Yan cross section).

QCD Event Generators

This report is a survey on QCD Event Generator issues of relevance for LEP 2. It contains four main sections: a summary of experience from LEP 1, extrapolations to LEP 2 energies, Monte Carlo descriptions and standardization issues.

Hadronic Final States

The following aspects of hadronic final states in deep inelastic lepton scattering are reviewed: measuring $alpha_s$ from multi-jet production rates and event shapes; alternative jet algorithms for DIS; power-suppressed corrections to event shapes; comparing jet fragmentation in $e^+e^-$ annihilation and DIS; final states in the BFKL and CCFM formulations of small-$x$ dynamics; exotic (instanton-induced) final states.

HERBVI - a program for simulation of baryon- and lepton- number violating processes

We describe a Monte Carlo event generator for the simulation of baryon- and lepton-number violating processes at supercolliders. The package, {\HERBVI}, is designed as a hard-process generator interfacing to the general hadronic event simulation program {\HW}. In view of the very high multiplicity of gauge bosons expected in such processes, particular attention is paid to the efficient generation of multiparticle phase space. The program also takes account of the expected colour structure of baryon-number violating vertices, which has important implications for the hadronization of the final state.

Calculation of Power Corrections to Hadronic Event Shapes

We compute power corrections to hadronic event shapes in $e^+e^-$ annihilation, assuming an infrared regular behaviour of the effective coupling $α_s$. With the integral of $α_s$ over the infrared region as the only non-perturbative parameter, also measured in heavy quark physics, we can account for the empirical features of $1/Q$ corrections to the mean values of various event shapes.

QCD Scaling Violation at Small x

We investigate the evolution of parton densities at small values of the momentum fraction, x, by including resummed anomalous dimensions in the renormalization group equations. The resummation takes into account the leading-logarithmic contributions (α_S \ln x)^k given by the BFKL equation and the next-to-leading-logarithmic corrections from quark evolution. We present numerical results for the parton densities and the deep inelastic structure function F_2.

Estimation of Power Corrections to Hadronic Event Shapes

Power corrections to hadronic event shapes are estimated using a recently suggested relationship between perturbative and non-perturbative effects in QCD. The infrared cutoff dependence of perturbative calculations is related to non-perturbative contributions with the same dependence on the energy scale $Q$. Corrections proportional to $1/Q$ are predicted, in agreement with experiment. An empirical proportionality between the magnitudes of perturbative and non-perturbative coefficients is noted.

Monte Carlo simulation of baryon and lepton number violating processes at high energies

We report results obtained with the first complete event generator for electroweak baryon and lepton number violating interactions at supercolliders. We find that baryon number violation would be very difficult to establish, but lepton number violation can be seen provided at least a few hundred L violating events are available with good electron or muon identification in the energy range 10 GeV to 1 TeV.
