Charge Order Breaks Magnetic Symmetry in Molecular Quantum Spin Chains

Charge order affects most of the electronic properties but is believed not to alter the spin arrangement since the magnetic susceptibility remains unchanged. We present electron-spin-resonance experiments on quasi-one-dimensional (TMTTF)2X salts (X= PF6, AsF6 and SbF6), which reveal that the magnetic properties are modified below TCO when electronic ferroelectricity sets in. The coupling of anions and organic molecules rotates the g-tensor out of the molecular plane creating magnetically non-equivalent sites on neighboring chains at domain walls. Due to anisotropic Zeeman interaction a novel magnetic interaction mechanism in the charge-ordered state is observed as a doubling of the rotational periodicity of Delta H.

Upper critical field divergence induced by mesoscopic phase separation in the organic superconductor (TMTSF)2ReO4

Due to the competition of two anion orders, (TMTSF)2ReO4, presents a phase coexistence between semiconducting and metallic (superconducting) regions (filaments or droplets) in a wide range of pressure. In this regime, the superconducting upper critical field for H parallel to both c* and b' axes present a linear part at low fields followed by a divergence above a cross-over field. This cross-over corresponds to the 3D-2D decoupling transition expected in filamentary or granular superconductors. The sharpness of the transition also demonstrates that all filaments are of similar sizes and self organize in a very ordered way. The distance between the filaments and their cross-section are estimated.

Scaling Behavior of the Longitudinal and Transverse Transport in Quasi One-Dimensional Organic Conductors

We report on dc and microwave experiments of the low-dimensional organic conductors (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ and (TMTSF)$_2$ClO$_4$ along the $a$, $b^{\prime}$, and $c^*$ directions. In the normal state of (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ below T=70 K, the dc resistivity follows a power-law with $ρ_a$ and $ρ_{b^{\prime}}$ proportional to $T^2$ while $ρ_{c^*}\propto T$. Above $T = 100$ K the exponents extracted from the data for the $a$ and $c^*$ axes are consiste1nt with what is to be expected for a system of coupled one-dimensional chains (Luttinger liquid) and a dimensional crossover at a temperature of about 100 K. The $b^\prime$ axis shows anomalous exponents that could be attributed to a large crossover between these two regimes. The contactless microwave measurements of single crystals along the $b^{\prime}$-axis reveal an anomaly between 25 and 55 K which is not understood yet. The organic superconductor (TMTSF)$_2$ClO$_4$ is more a two-dimensional metal with an anisotropy $ρ_a/ρ_{b^{\prime}}$ of approximately 2 at all temperatures. Such a low anisotropy is unexpected in view of the transfer integrals. Slight indications to one-dimensionality are found in the temperature dependent transport only above 200 K. Even along the least conducting $c^*$ direction no region with semiconducting behavior is revealed up to room temperature.
