$SO(1, d + 1)$ symmetry of the Exact RG equation

There is a method for constructing from first principles, a holographic bulk dual action in Euclidean $AdS_{d+1}$ space for a $d$-dimensional Euclidean CFT on the boundary, starting from the Polchinski's Exact Renormalization Group (ERG) equation that describes the RG evolution of the interaction part of the boundary Wilson action. The bulk action in $AdS_{d+1}$ has an $SO(1,d+1)$ symmetry and is obtained from the evolution operator of the Polchinski's ERG equation by a map that involves a field redefinition and requires a $\textit{special}$ form of the UV cutoff function in the ERG equation. In this paper, we show that for $\textit{any form}$ of the cutoff function, the ERG evolution operator has an $SO(1,d+1)$ symmetry. The generators of the special conformal transformation depend on the cutoff function. For the special cutoff function that maps to $AdS$ space, the transformations have the standard form of $AdS$ isometry. We also show that the ERG evolution operator for the $\textit{full}$ Wilson action can be put in the same form as the Polchinski's ERG equation by a field redefinition and consequently also has an $SO(1,d+1)$ symmetry for any cutoff function.

Yang-Mills interaction from boundary vector model

We construct a non-abelian spin 1 gauge theory with a cubic interaction in AdS$_4$ from the Exact Renormalisation Group (ERG) flow of a CFT in 3 dimensions. The latter is the ${USp}(2N)$ singlet sector of the free field theory of $2N$ massless complex scalars. The quadratic and cubic terms in the bulk action are those of a gauge fixed version of a (local) gauge invariant action. By construction this bulk action is the evolution operator for the ERG equation of the boundary theory and thus is guaranteed to reproduce the correct boundary correlators using the usual AdS/CFT prescription. This work expands on the programme first set out in arXiv:1706.03371.

Mapping from Exact RG to Holographic RG in Flat Space

In earlier papers a method was given for constructing from first principles a holographic bulk dual action in Euclidean AdS space for a Euclidean CFT on the boundary. The starting point was an Exact RG for the boundary theory. The bulk action is obtained from the evolution operator for this ERG followed by a field redefinition. This procedure guarantees that the boundary correlators are all recovered correctly. In this paper we use the same method in an attempt to construct a holographic dual action for the free $O(N)$ model where the bulk is flat Euclidean space with a plane boundary wall. The scalar cubic interaction is found to be local (in $D=3$) but depends on the distance from the boundary - which can be interpreted as a non constant background dilaton field. The spin 2 - scalar - scalar interaction is found to be non local - in contrast to the AdS case. A field redefinition that makes the kinetic term quartic in derivatives can be done to eliminate this non locality. It is shown that the action can be obtained by gauge fixing an action that has the linearized gauge invariance associated with general coordinate invariance. Boundary correlators (two point and three point) are shown to be reproduced by bulk calculations - as expected in this approach to holography.

Holographic RG from ERG: Locality and General Coordinate Invariance in the Bulk

In earlier papers it was shown that the correct kinetic term for scalar, vector gauge field and the spin two field in $AdS_{D+1}$ space is obtained starting from the ERG equation for a $CFT_D$ perturbed by scalar composite, conserved vector current and conserved traceless energy momentum tensor respectively. In this paper interactions are studied and it is shown that a flipped version of Polchinski ERG equation that evolves towards the UV can be written down and is useful for making contact with the usual AdS/CFT prescriptions for correlation function calculations. The scalar-scalar-spin-2 interaction in the bulk is derived from the ERG equation in the large $N$ semiclasical approximation. It is also shown that after mapping to AdS the interaction is local on a scale of the bare cutoff rather than the moving cutoff (which would have corresponded to the AdS scale). The map to $AdS_{D+1}$ plays a crucial role in this locality. The local nature of the coupling ensures that this interaction term in the bulk action is obtained by gauge fixing a general coordinate invariant scalar kinetic term in the bulk action. A wave function renormalization of the scalar field is found to be required for a mutually consistent map of the two fields to $AdS_{D+1}$.

Aspects of the map from Exact RG to Holographic RG in AdS and dS

In earlier work the evolution operator for the exact RG equation was mapped to a field theory in Euclidean AdS. This gives a simple way of understanding AdS/CFT. We explore aspects of this map by studying a simple example of a Schroedinger equation for a free particle with time dependent mass. This is an analytic continuation of an ERG like equation. We show for instance that it can be mapped to a harmonic oscillator. We show that the same techniques can lead to an understanding of dS/CFT too.

Exact Renormalization Group and Sine Gordon Theory

The exact renormalization group is used to study the RG flow of quantities in field theories. The basic idea is to write an evolution operator for the flow and evaluate it in perturbation theory. This is easier than directly solving the differential equation. This is illustrated by reproducing known results in four dimensional $ϕ^4$ field theory and the two dimensional Sine-Gordon theory. It is shown that the calculation of beta function is somewhat simplified. The technique is also used to calculate the c-function in two dimensional Sine-Gordon theory. This agrees with other prescriptions for calculating c-functions in the literature. If one extrapolates the connection between central charge of a CFT and entanglement entropy in two dimensions, to the c-function of the perturbed CFT, then one gets a value for the entanglement entropy in Sine-Gordon theory that is in exact agreement with earlier calculations (including one using holography) in arXiv:1610.04233.

Wilson Action for the $O(N)$ Model

In this paper the fixed-point Wilson action for the critical $O(N)$ model in $D=4-\eps$ dimensions is written down in the $\eps$ expansion to order $\eps^2$. It is obtained by solving the fixed-point Polchinski Exact Renormalization Group equation (with anomalous dimension) in powers of $\eps$. This is an example of a theory that has scale and conformal invariance despite having a finite UV cutoff. The energy-momentum tensor for this theory is also constructed (at zero momentum) to order $\eps^2$. This is done by solving the Ward-Takahashi identity for the fixed point action. It is verified that the trace of the energy-momentum tensor is proportional to the violation of scale invariance as given by the exact RG, i.e., the $β$ function. The vanishing of the trace at the fixed point ensures conformal invariance. Some examples of calculations of correlation functions are also given.

Finite Cutoff CFT's and Composite Operators

Recently a conformally invariant action describing the Wilson-Fischer fixed point in $D=4-ε$ dimensions in the presence of a {\em finite} UV cutoff was constructed \cite{Dutta}. In the present paper we construct two composite operator perturbations of this action with definite scaling dimension also in the presence of a finite cutoff. Thus the operator (as well as the fixed point action) is well defined at all momenta $0\leq p\leq \infty$ and at low energies they reduce to $\int_x ϕ^2$ and $\int _x ϕ^4$ respectively. The construction includes terms up to $O(\lamda^2)$. In the presence of a finite cutoff they mix with higher order irrelevant operators. The dimensions are also calculated to this order and agree with known results.

Holographic RG and Exact RG in O(N) Model

In this paper an Exact Renormalization Group (ERG) equation is written for the the critical $O(N)$ model in $D$-dimensions (with $D\approx 3$) at the Wilson-Fisher fixed point perturbed by a scalar composite operator. The action is written in terms of an auxiliary scalar field and reproduces correlation functions of a scalar composite operator. The equation is derived starting from the Polchinski ERG equation for the fundamental scalar field. As described in arXiv:1706.03371 an evolution operator for the Polchinski ERG equation can be written in the form of a functional integral, with a $D+1$ dimensional scalar field theory action. In the case of the fundamental scalar field this action only has a kinetic term and therefore looks quite different from Holographic RG where there are potential terms. But in the composite operator case discussed in this paper, the ERG equation and consequently the $D+1$ dimensional action contains higher order potential terms for the scalar field and is therefore very similar to the case of Holographic RG. Furthermore this action can be mapped to a scalar field action in $AdS_{D+1}$ using the techniques of arXiv:1706.03371. The leading cubic term of the potential is computed in this paper for $D \approx 3$ and expectedly vanishes in $D=3$ in agreement with results in the AdS/CFT literature.

Holographic Wilson's RG

In an earlier paper (arXiv:1706.03371) a holographic form of the Exact Renormalization Group (ERG) evolution operator for a (perturbed) free scalar field (CFT) in D dimensions was formulated. It was shown to be equivalent, after a change of variables, to a free scalar field action in AdS_{D+1} space time. We attempt to extend this result to a theory where the scalar field has an anomalous dimension. Instead of the ERG evolution operator, we examine the generating functional with an infrared cutoff, and derive the prescription of alternative quantization by using the change of variables introduced in the previous paper. The anomalous dimension is thus related in the usual way to the mass of the bulk scalar field. Computation of higher point functions remains difficult in this theory, but should be tractable in the large N version.

Holographic Beta functions for the Generalized Sine Gordon Theory

The Sine Gordon theory is generalized to include several cosine terms. This is similar to the world sheet description of a string propagating in a tachyon background. This model is studied as a (boundary) 2d euclidean field theory and also using an $AdS_3$ holographic bulk dual. The beta functions for the cosine vertex of this modified theory are first computed in the boundary using techniques based on the exact RG. The beta functions are also computed holographically using position space and momentum space techniques. The results are in agreement with each other and with earlier computations. The beta functions of the field strength renormalization are computed in position space. They match with the earlier results in \cite{Oak:2017trw}.

Sine-Gordon Theory : Entanglement entropy and holography

We compute change in entanglement entropy for a single interval in $1+1$ dimensional sine-Gordon model perturbatively in the coupling. The sine-Gordon perturbation can be thought of as deformation of the free CFT by a primary operator with dimension $Δ$. In an independent computation we calculate holographic entanglement entropy for that interval from three dimensional bulk AdS which has a massive scalar with its mass satisfying $m^2= Δ(Δ-2)$. We show that the two results match for near-marginal perturbations upto leading order in the coupling.

A Holographic form for Wilson's RG

An attempt is made to make precise the connection between Wilson's RG and "Holographic RG" by writing Wilson's RG in a holographic form. A functional formulation is given for the exact RG evolution of a scalar field in $d$ (flat) dimensions. It is shown that a change of variables maps the action to that for a scalar field in $AdS_{d+1}$. This provides a holographic form for Wilson's RG that can be called "Holographic RG". This mapping can only be done for a specific form of the cutoff function in the Exact Renormalization Group formalism. The notion of scale and conformal invariance in the presence of a {\em finite} UV cutoff is emphasized. The discussion is primarily about the two-point function and the Gaussian fixed point. Some remarks are made about nontrivial fixed points.

Zero Temperature Dissipation and Holography

We use holographic techniques to study the zero-temperature limit of dissipation for a Brownian particle moving in a strongly coupled CFT at finite temperature in various space-time dimensions. The dissipative term in the boundary theory for $ω\to 0$, $T \to 0$ with $ω/ T$ held small and fixed, does not match the same at $T=0$, $ω\to 0$. Thus the $T\to 0$ limit is not smooth for $ω< T$. This phenomenon appears to be related to a confinement-deconfinement phase transition at $T=0$ in the field theory.

Exact Renormalization Group and Loop Variables: A Background Independent Approach to String Theory

This paper is a self contained review of the Loop Variable approach to string theory. The Exact Renormalization Group is applied to a world sheet theory describing string propagation in a general background involving both massless and massive modes. This gives interacting equations of motion for the modes of the string. Loop variable techniques are used to obtain gauge invariant equations. Since this method is not tied to flat space time or any particular background metric, it is manifestly background independent. The technique can be applied to both open and closed strings. Thus gauge invariant and generally covariant interacting equations of motion can be written for massive higher spin fields in arbitrary backgrounds. Some explicit examples are given.

Background Independence, Gauge Invariance and Equations of Motion for Closed String Modes

In an earlier paper [arXiv:1408.0484] gauge invariant and background covariant equations for closed string modes were obtained from the exact renormalization group equation of the world sheet theory. The background metric (but not the physical metric) had to be flat and hence the method was not manifestly background independent. In this paper the restrictions on the background metric are relaxed. A simple prescription for the map from loop variables to space time fields is given whereby for arbitrary backgrounds the equations are generally covariant and gauge invariant. Extra terms involving couplings of the curvature tensor to (derivatives of) the Stueckelberg fields have to be added. The background metric is chosen to be the physical metric without any restrictions. This method thus gives manifestly background independent gauge invariant and general covariant equations of motion for both open and closed string modes.

BCS Instability and Finite Temperature Corrections to Tachyon Mass in Intersecting D1-Branes

A holographic description of BCS superconductivity is given in arxiv:1104.2843. This model was constructed by insertion of a pair of D8-branes on a D4-background. The spectrum of intersecting D8-branes has tachyonic modes indicating an instability which is identified with the BCS instability in superconductors. Our aim is to study the stability of the intersecting branes under finite temperature effects. Many of the technical aspects of this problem are captured by a simpler problem of two intersecting D1-branes on flat background. In the simplified set-up we compute the one-loop finite temperature corrections to the tree-level tachyon mass using the frame-work of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in (1 + 1)-dimensions. We show that the one-loop two-point functions are ultraviolet finite due to cancellation of ultraviolet divergence between the amplitudes containing bosons and fermions in the loop. The amplitudes are found to be infrared divergent due to the presence of massless fields in the loops. We compute the finite temperature mass correction to all the massless fields and use these temperature dependent masses to compute the tachyonic mass correction. We show numerically the existence of a transition temperature at which the effective mass of the tree-level tachyons becomes zero, thereby stabilizing the brane configuration.

Schwinger Effect and Negative Differential Conductivity in Holographic Models

The consequences of the Schwinger effect for conductivity is computed for strong coupling systems using holography. The one loop diagram on the flavor brane introduces an $O({λ\over N_c})$ imaginary part in the effective action for a Maxwell flavor gauge field. This in turn introduces a real conductivity in an otherwise insulating phase of the boundary theory. Moreover in certain regions of parameter space the differential conductivity is negative. This is computed in the context of the Sakai-Sugimoto model.
