Intermediate phases of the two dimensional electron fluid between the Fermi liquid and the Wigner crystal

We show that there can be no direct first order transition between a Fermi liquid and an insulating electronic (Wigner) crystalline phase in a clean two-dimensional electron gas in a metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET); rather, there must always exist intermediate ``micro-emulsion'' phases, and an accompanying sequence of continuous phase transitions. Among the intermediate phases which we find are a variety of electronic liquid crystalline phases, including stripe-related analogues of classical smectics and nematics. The existence of these phases can be established in the neighborhood of the phase boundaries on the basis of an {\it asymptotically exact} analysis, and reasonable estimates can be made concerning the ranges of electron densities and device geometries in which they exist. They can occur in clean Si MOSFETs in the range of densities in which an ``apparent metal to insulator transition'' has been observed in existing experiments. We also point out that, in analogy with the Pomaranchuk effect in $^3$He, the Wigner crystalline phase has higher spin entropy than the liquid phase, leading to an increasing tendency to crystallization with increasing temperature.

Signature of the electron-electron interaction in the magnetic field dependence of nonlinear I-V characteristics in mesoscopic systems

We show that the nonlinear I-V characteristics of mesoscopic samples with metallic conductivity should contain parts which are linear in the magnetic field and quadratic in the electric field. These contributions to the current are entirely due to the electron-electron interaction and consequently they are proportional to the electron-electron interaction constant. We also note that both the amplitude and the sign of the current exhibit random oscillations as a function of temperature.

Propagation of nonlinear waves in disordered media

We study propagation of stationary waves in disordered non-linear media described by the non-linear Schroedinger equation and show that for given boundary conditions and a given coherent wave incident on a sample the number of solutions of the equation increase exponentially with the sample size. We also discuss the ballistic case, the sensitivity of the solutions to a change of external parameters, the similarity of this problem to the problem of spin glasses and time-dependent solutions.

Phase separation in the two-dimensional electron liquid in MOSFETs

We show that the existence of an intermediate phase between the Fermi liquid and the Wigner crystal phases is a generic property of the two-dimensional pure electron liqd in MOSFET's at zero temperature. The physical reason for the existence of these phases is a partial separation of the uniform phases. We discuss properties of these phases and a possible explanation of experimental results on transport properties of low density electron gas in Si MOSFET's. We also argue that in certain range of parameters the partial phase separation corresponds to a supersolid phas e discussed in [AndreevLifshitz].

Mesoscopic effects in superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor junctions

We show that at zero temperature the supercurrent through the superconductor - ferromagnetic metal - superconductor junctions does not decay exponentially with the thickness $L$ of the junction. At large $L$ it has a random sample-specific sign which can change with a change in temperature. In the case of mesoscopic junctions the phase of the order parameter in the ground state is a random sample-specific quantity. In the case of junctions of large area the ground state phase difference is $\pm π/2$.

Chirality effects in carbon nanotubes

We consider chirality related effects in optical, photogalvanic and electron-transport properties of carbon nanotubes. We show that these properties of chiral nanotubes are determined by terms in the electron effective Hamiltonian describing the coupling between the electron wavevector along the tube principal axis and the orbital momentum around the tube circumference. We develop a theory of photogalvanic effects and a theory of d.c. electric current, which is linear in the magnetic field and quadratic in the bias voltage. Moreover, we present analytic estimations for the natural circular dichroism and magneto-spatial effect in the light absorption.

Conductivity of the classical two-dimensional electron gas

We discuss the applicability of the Boltzmann equation to the classical two-dimensional electron gas. We show that in the presence of both the electron-impurity and electron-electron scattering the Boltzmann equation can be inapplicable and the correct result for conductivity can be different from the one obtained from the kinetic equation by a logarithmically large factor.

Quantum superconductor-metal transition

We consider a system of superconducting grains embedded in a normal metal. At zero temperature this system exhibits a quantum superconductor-normal metal phase transition. This transition can take place at arbitrarily large conductance of the normal metal.

A theory of π/2 superconducting Josephson junctions

We consider theoretically a Josephson junction with a superconducting critical current density which has a random sign along the junction's surface. We show that the ground state of the junction corresponds to the phase difference equal to π/2. Such a situation can take place in superconductor- ferromagnet junction.

Mesoscopic mechanism of exchange interaction in magnetic multilayers

We discuss a mesoscopic mechanism of exchange interaction in ferromagnet-normal metal-ferromagnet multilayers. We show that in the case when the metal's thickness is larger than the electron mean free path, the relative orientation of magnetizations in the ferromagnets is perpendicular. The exchange energy between ferromagnets decays with the metal thickness as a power law.

Mesoscopic sensitivity of speckles in disordered nonlinear media to changes of disordered potential

We show that the sensitivity of wave speckle patterns in disordered nonlinear media to changes of scattering potential increases with sample size. For large enough sample size this quantity diverges, which implies that at given coherent wave incident on a sample there are multiple solutions for the spatial distribution of the wave's density. The number of solutions increases exponentially with the sample size.

Density of States in Superconductor - Normal Metal - Superconductor Junctions

We consider the chi_0 dependence of the density of states inside the normal metal of a superconductor - normal metal - superconductor (SNS) junction. Here chi_0 is the phase difference of two superconductors of the junction. It is shown that in the absence of electron-electron interaction the energy dependence of the density of states has a gap which decreases as chi_0 increases and closes at chi_0= pi. Both the analytical expressions for the chi_0 dependence of the density of states and the results of numerical simulations are presented.

Mesoscopic mechanism of adiabatic charge transport

We consider adiabatic charge transport through mesoscopic metallic samples caused by a periodically changing external potential. We find that both the amplitude and the sign of the charge transferred through a sample per period are random sample specific quantities. The characteristic magnitude of the charge is determined by the quantum interference.

Negative superfluid densities in superconducting films in a parallel magnetic field

In this paper we develop a theory of mesoscopic fluctuations in disordered thin superconducting films in a parallel magnetic field. At zero temperature and sufficiently strong magnetic field the system undergoes a phase transition into a state characterized by a superfluid density, which is random in sign. Consequently, in this region, random supercurrents are spontaneously created in the ground state of the system, and it belongs to the same universality class as the two dimensional XY spin glass with a random sign of the exchange interaction.

Hall effect in NS and SNS junctions

Hall effect in SN and SNS junctions is considered. It is shown that at small temperature the Hall voltage is significantly suppressed as compared to its normal metal value. The time dependence of the Hall voltage in SNS junctions has a form of narrow pulses with the Josephson frequency.

Resistance of superconductor-normal metal-superconductor junctions

It is shown that the conductance of a superconductor-normal metal-superconductor junction can exhibit a significant dependence on the phase of the superconducting order parameter in the situation when the size of the normal region of the junction is much larger than the normal metal coherence length and the critical current of the junction is already exponentially small. The period of the conductance oscillations as a function of the phase can be equal to $π$ or $2π$ depending on parameters of the system.
