Josephson current between two $p$-wave superconducting nanowires in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction and Zeeman magnetic fields

Josephson current between two one-dimensional nanowires with proximity induced $p$-wave superconducting pairing is calculated in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction, in-plane and normal magnetic fields. We show that Andreev retro-tunneling is realized by means of three channels. The main contribution to the Josephson current gives a scattering in a conventional particle-hole channel, when an electron-like quasiparticle reflects to a hole-like quasiparticle with opposite spin yielding a current which depends only on the order parameters' phase differences $φ$ and oscillates with $4π$ period. Second anomalous particle-hole channel, corresponding to the Andreev reflection of an incident electron-like quasiparticle to an hole-like quasiparticle with the same spin orientation, survives only in the presence of the in-plane magnetic field. The contribution of this channel to the Josephson current oscillates with $4π$ period not only with $φ$ but also with orientational angle of the in-plane magnetic field $θ$ resulting in a magneto-Josephson effect. Third anomalous particle-particle channel, which represents a reflection of an electron-like (hole-like) quasiparticle to a electron-like (hole-like) quasiparticle with opposite spin-orientation, oscillates only with the in-plane magnetic field orientation angle $θ$. We present a detailed theoretical analysis of both DC and AC Josephson effects in such a system showing contributions from all these channels and discuss experiments which can test our theory.

Superfluid weight and polarization amplitude in the one-dimensional bosonic Hubbard model

We calculate the superfluid weight and the polarization amplitude for the one-dimensional bosonic Hubbard model focusing on the strong-coupling regime. Other than analytic calculations we apply two methods: variational Monte Carlo based on the Baeriswyl wave function and exact diagonalization. The former gives zero superfluid response at integer filling, while the latter gives a superfluid response at finite hopping. From the polarization amplitude we derive the variance and the associated size scaling exponent. Again, the variational study does not produce a finite superfluid weight at integer filling (size scaling exponent is near one), but the Fourier transform of the polarization amplitude behaves in a similar way to the result of exact diagonalization, with a peak at small hopping, and suddenly decreasing at the insulator-superfluid transition. On the other hand, exact diagonalization studies result in a finite spread of the total position which increases with the size of the system. In the superfluid phase the size scaling exponent is two as expected. Importantly, our work addresses the ambiguities that arise in the calculation of the superfluid weight in variational calculations, and we comment on the prediction of Anderson about the superfluid response of the model at integer filling.

Plasmon-phonon coupling in a valley-spin-polarized two-dimensional electron system: a theoretical study on monolayer silicene

We study the hybrid excitations due to the coupling between surface optical phonons of a polar insulator substrate and plasmons in the valley-spin-polarized metal phase of silicene under an exchange field. We perform the calculations within the generalized random-phase approximation where the plasmon-phonon coupling is taken into account by the long-range Fr$\ddot{\mathrm{o}}$hlich interaction. Our investigation on two hybridized plasmon branches in different spin and valley subbands shows distinct behavior compared to the uncoupled case. Interestingly, in one valley, it is found that while the high energy hybrid branch is totally damped in the spin-up state, it can be well-defined in the the spin-down state. Moreover, we show that the electron-phonon coupling is stronger in both spin-down subbands, regardless of valley index, due to their higher electron densities. In addition, we study the effects of electron-phonon coupling on the quasiparticle scattering rate of four distinct spin-valley locked subbands. The results of our calculations predict a general enhancement in the scattering rate for all subbands, and a jump in the case of spin-down states. This sharp increase associated to the damping of hybrid plasmon modes is almost absent in the uncoupled case. The results suggest an effective way for manipulating collective modes of valley-spin-polarized silicene which may become useful in future valleytronic and spintronic applications.

Composite quasiparticles in strongly-correlated dipolar Fermi liquids

Strong particle-plasmon interaction in electronic systems can lead to composite \emph{hole-plasmon} excitations. We investigate the emergence of similar composite quasiparticles in ultracold dipolar Fermi liquids originating from the long-range dipole-dipole interaction. We use the $G_0W$ technique with an effective interaction obtained from the static structure factor to calculate the quasiparticle properties and single-particle spectral function. We first demonstrate that within this formalism a very good agreement with the quantum Monte Carlo results could be achieved over a wide range of coupling strengths for the renormalization constant and effective mass. The composite \textit{quasiparticle-zero sound} excitations which are undamped at long wavelengths emerge at intermediate and strong couplings in the spectral function and should be detectable through the radio frequency spectroscopy of nonreactive polar molecules at high densities.

Phase-diagram and dynamics of Rydberg-dressed fermions in two-dimensions

We investigate the ground-state properties and the collective modes of a two-dimensional two-component Rydberg-dressed Fermi liquid in the dipole-blockade regime. We find instability of the homogeneous system toward phase separated and density ordered phases, using the Hartree-Fock and random-phase approximations, respectively. The spectral weight of collective density oscillations in the homogenous phase also signals the emergence of density-wave instability. We examine the effect of exchange-hole on the density-wave instability and on the collective mode dispersion using the Hubbard local-field factor.

Effect of Weak Disorder on the BCS-BEC crossover in a two-dimensional Fermi Gas

In this article we study the two-dimensional (2D) ultracold Fermi gas with weak impurity in the framework of mean-field theory where the impurity is introduced through Gaussian fluctuations. We have investigated the role of the impurity by studying the experimentally accessible quantities such as condensate fraction and equation of state of the ultracold systems. Our analysis reveals that, at the crossover the disorder enhances superfluidity, which we attribute to the unique nature of the unitary region and to the dimensional effect.

Variational Monte Carlo method for the Baeriswyl wavefunction: application to the one-dimensional bosonic Hubbard model

A variational Monte Carlo method for bosonic lattice models is introduced. The method is based on the Baeriswyl projected wavefunction. The Baeriswyl wavefunction consists of a kinetic energy based projection applied to the wavefunction at infinite interaction, and is related to the shadow wavefunction already used in the study of continuous models of bosons. The wavefunction at infinite interaction, and the projector, are represented in coordinate space, leading to an expression for expectation values which can be evaluated via Monte Carlo sampling. We calculate the phase diagram and other properties of the bosonic Hubbard model. The calculated phase diagram is in excellent agreement with known quantum Monte Carlo results. We also analyze correlation functions.

Light-hole exciton mixing and dynamics in Mn-doped quantum dots

We investigate theoretically the spectral and dynamical effects of the short-range exchange interaction between a single manganese (Mn) atom hosted by cylindrical CdTe quantum dots and its light-hole excitons or biexcitons. Our approach is based on the Kohn-Luttinger KP theory and configuration interaction method, the dynamics of the system in the presence of intraband relaxation being derived from the von Neumann-Lindblad equation. The complex structure of the light-hole exciton absorption spectrum reveals the exchange-induced exciton mixing and depends strongly on the Mn position. In particular, if the Mn atom is closer to the edges of the cylinder the bright and dark light-hole excitons are mixed by the hole-Mn exchange alone. Consequently, their populations exhibit exchange-induced Rabi oscillations which can be viewed as optical signatures of light-hole spin reversal. Similar results are obtained for mixed biexcitons, in this case the exchange-induced Rabi oscillations being damped by the intraband hole relaxation processes. The effect of light-hole heavy-hole mixing is also discussed.

Heat transfer through dipolar coupling: Sympathetic cooling without contact

We consider two parallel layers of dipolar ultracold Fermi gases at different temperatures and calculate the heat transfer between them. The effective interactions describing screening and correlation effects between the dipoles in a single layer are modeled within the Euler-Lagrange Fermi-hypernetted chain approximation. The random-phase approximation is used for the interactions across the layers. We investigate the amount of transferred power between the layers as a function of the temperature difference. Energy transfer arises due to the long-range dipole-dipole interactions. A simple thermal model is established to investigate the feasibility of using the contactless sympathetic cooling of the ultracold polar atoms/molecules. Our calculations indicate that dipolar heat transfer is effective for typical polar molecule experiments and may be utilized as a cooling process.

Density-Wave Instability and Collective Modes in a Bilayer System of Dipolar Bosons

We consider a bilayer of dipolar bosons in which the polarization of dipoles are perpendicular to the planes. Using accurate static structure factor $S(q)$ data from hypernetted-chain calculation for single layer dipolar bosons we construct effective screened interactions for intralayer particles. We adopt the random-phase approximation for interlayer interactions. We study the instability of the homogeneous bilayer system against the formation of density waves by investigating the poles of the density-density response function. The dispersion of collective modes of this system also signals the density-wave instability. We also investigate the effect of counterflow on the collective mode dispersion and on the density-wave instability and discuss the dissipationless superfluid drag effect in the presence of a background velocity.

Quantum turnstile operation of single-molecule magnets

The time-dependent transport through single-molecule magnets coupled to magnetic or non-magnetic electrodes is studied in the framework of the generalized master equation method. We investigate the transient regime induced by the periodic switching of the source and drain contacts. If the electrodes have opposite magnetizations the quantum turnstile operation allows the stepwise writing of intermediate excited states. In turn, the transient currents provide a way to read these states. Within our approach we take into account both the uniaxial and transverse anisotropy. The latter may induce additional quantum tunneling processes which affect the efficiency of the proposed read-and-write scheme. An equally weighted mixture of molecular spin states can be prepared if one of the electrodes is ferromagnetic.

Investigating Dirty Crossover through Fidelity Susceptibility and Density of States

We investigate the BCS-BEC crossover in an ultracold atomic gas in the presence of disorder. The disorder is incorporated in the mean-field formalism through Gaussian fluctuations. We observe evolution to an asymmetric line-shape of fidelity susceptibility as a function of interaction coupling with increasing disorder strength which may point to an impending quantum phase transition. The asymmetric line-shape is further analyzed using the statistical tools of skewness and kurtosis. We extend our analysis to density of states (DOS) for a better understanding of the crossover in the disordered environment.

A Metal-Insulator transition induced by Random Dipoles

We study the localization properties of a test dipole feeling the disordered potential induced by dipolar impurities trapped at random positions in an optical lattice. This random potential is marked by correlations which are a convolution of short-range and long-range ones. We show that when short-range correlations are dominant, extended states can appear in the spectrum. Introducing long-range correlations, the extended states, if any, are wiped out and localization is restored over the whole spectrum. Moreover, long-range correlations can either increase or decrease the localization length at the center of the band, which indicates a richer behavior than previously predicted.

Raman superradiance and spin lattice of ultracold atoms in optical cavities

We investigate synthesis of a hyperfine spin lattice in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate, with two hyperfine spin components, inside a one-dimensional high-finesse optical cavity, using off-resonant superradiant Raman scattering. Spatio-temporal evolution of the relative population of the hyperfine spin modes is examined numerically by solving the coupled cavity-condensate mean field equations in the dispersive regime. We find, analytically and numerically, that beyond a certain threshold of the transverse laser pump, Raman superradiance and self-organization of the hyperfine spin components simultaneously occur and as a result a magnetic lattice is formed. The effects of an extra laser pump parallel to the cavity axis and the time-dependence of the pump strength on the synthesis of a sharper lattice are also addressed.

Ground-state and dynamical properties of two-dimensional dipolar Fermi liquids

We study the ground-state properties of a two-dimensional spin-polarized fluid of dipolar fermions within the Euler-Lagrange Fermi-hypernetted-chain approximation. Our method is based on the solution of a scattering Schrödinger equation for the "pair amplitude" $\sqrt{g(r)}$, where $g(r)$ is the pair distribution function. A key ingredient in our theory is the effective pair potential, which includes a bosonic term from Jastrow-Feenberg correlations and a fermionic contribution from kinetic energy and exchange, which is tailored to reproduce the Hartree-Fock limit at weak coupling. Very good agreement with recent results based on quantum Monte Carlo simulations is achieved over a wide range of coupling constants up to the liquid-to-crystal quantum phase transition (QPT). Using a certain approximate model for the dynamical density-density response function, we furthermore demonstrate that: i) the liquid phase is stable towards the formation of density waves up to the liquid-to-crystal QPT and ii) an undamped zero-sound mode exists for any value of the interaction strength, down to infinitesimally weak couplings.

Stability of Sarma phases in density imbalanced electron-hole bilayer systems

We study excitonic condensation in an electron-hole bilayer system with unequal layer densities at zero temperature. Using mean-field theory we solve the BCS gap equations numerically and investigate the effects of intra-layer interactions. We analyze the stability of the Sarma phase with $\bk,-\bk$ pairing by calculating the superfluid mass density and also by checking the compressibility matrix. We find that with bare Coulomb interactions the superfluid density is always positive in the Sarma phase, due to a peculiar momentum structure of the gap function originating from the singular behavior of the Coulomb potential at zero momentum and the presence of a sharp Fermi surface. Introducing a simple model for screening, we find that the superfluid density becomes negative in some regions of the phase diagram, corresponding to an instability towards a Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) type superfluid phase. Thus, intra-layer interaction and screening together can lead to a rich phase diagram in the BCS-BEC crossover regime in electron-hole bilayer systems.

Two-dimensional boson-fermion mixtures

Using mean-field theory, we study the equilibrium properties of boson-fermion mixtures confined in a harmonic pancake-shaped trap at zero temperature. When the modulus of the s-wave scattering lengths are comparable to the mixture thickness, two-dimensional scattering events introduce a logarithmic dependence on density in the coupling constants, greatly modifying the density profiles themselves. We show that for the case of a negative boson-fermion three-dimensional s-wave scattering length, the dimensional crossover stabilizes the mixture against collapse and drives it towards spatial demixing.

Effective mass suppression in a ferromagnetic two-dimensional electron liquid

We present numerical calculations of the electron effective mass in an interacting, ferromagnetic, two-dimensional electron system. We consider quantum interaction effects associated with the charge-density fluctuation induced many-body vertex corrections. Our theory, which is free of adjustable parameters, reveals that the effective mass is suppressed (relative to its band value) in the strong coupling limit, in good agreement with the results of recent experimental measurements.
