Gauge Invariant Derivation of Zeroth and First Laws of Black Hole Thermodynamics

In gauge invariant theories, like Einstein-Maxwell theory, physical observables should be gauge invariant. In particular, mass, entropy, angular momentum, electric charge and their respective chemical potentials, temperature, horizon angular velocity and electric potential which appear in the laws of black hole thermodynamics should be gauge invariant. In the usual construction of the laws of black hole thermodynamics, gauge invariance of the intensive quantities is subtle; here we remedy this and provide a gauge invariant derivation and the proof of the zeroth and first laws of black hole thermodynamics.

Spherically symmetric solutions of Einstein + non-polynomial gravities

We obtain the static spherically symmetric solutions of a class of gravitational models whose additions to the General Relativity (GR) action forbid Ricci-flat, in particular, Schwarzschild geometries. These theories are selected to maintain the (first) derivative order of the Einstein equations in Schwarzschild gauge. Generically, the solutions exhibit both horizons and a singularity at the origin, except for one model that forbids spherical symmetry altogether. Extensions to arbitrary dimension with a cosmological constant, Maxwell source and Gauss-Bonnet terms are also considered.

Shortcuts to Spherically Symmetric Solutions: A Cautionary Note

Spherically symmetric solutions of generic gravitational models are optimally, and legitimately, obtained by expressing the action in terms of the two surviving metric components. This shortcut is not to be overdone, however: a one-function ansatz invalidates it, as illustrated by the incorrect solutions of [1].

Complex Monopoles in the Path Integral

Complex monopole configurations dominate in the path integral in the Georgi-Glashow-Chern-Simons model and disorder the Higgs vacuum. No cancellation is expected among Gribov copies of the monopole configurations.

Complex monopole solutions exist in the three dimensional Georgi-Glashow model with the Chern-Simons term. They dominate the path integral and disorder the Higgs vacuum. Gribov copies of the vacuum and monopole configurations are studied in detail.

Temperature Dependence of ηand η^{\prime} Masses

We investigate the temperature dependence of ηand η^{\prime} masses due to scatterings from thermal pions in a heat bath using the non-linear sigma model. We show that mass shifts of ηand η^{\prime} and the shift in the mixing angle are negligible.
