Discerning ground state and photoemission-induced spin textures in altermagnetic $α$-MnTe

The recently discovered class of altermagnets provide a physical realization of an unconventional compensated magnetic phase with a higher partial-wave type of ordering, reminiscent of unconventional superfluid phases. Their stability under normal conditions has sparked significant research interest, spanning fields from spintronics to topological and correlated quantum materials. Spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SARPES) has great promise to resolve the momentum-dependent spin textures, which are intricately interweaved with the altermagnetic direct space spin order. Using the relativistic $d$-wave-like collinear spin polarization on one of the non-relativistic nodal surfaces of the altermagnetic band structure of $α$-MnTe as an example, we here identify and resolve the challenges associated with (S)ARPES studies on altermagnets. We focus particularly on the role of photoemission-induced electron polarization and the coupling between light and the Néel vector of a magnetic domain. Our findings reveal an atypical behaviour of photoemission selection rules while using linearly-polarized light. Our methods allow to distinguish polarization of photoelectrons originating from the sample's ground state spin texture, on one hand, and from the photoemission process, on the other hand. Our experimental results are supported by a combination of ab initio band-structure and 1-step photoemission calculations.

Enhanced superconducting gap in the outer CuO$_2$ plane of the trilayer cuprate (Hg,Re)Ba$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{8+δ}$

We report the first observation of a momentum-resolved superconducting gap in the Hg-based trilayer cuprate, which holds the highest record of superconducting transition temperature ($T_\mathrm{c}$) at ambient pressure. By angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy utilizing a micro-focused beam, clear quasiparticle dispersions originating from the inner and outer CuO$_2$ planes (IP and OP, respectively) were separately identified. The magnitude of the superconducting gap for the IP was comparable to that of the Bi-based trilayer cuprate with a lower $T_\mathrm{c}$. In contrast, the superconducting gap for the OP was significantly larger than that of the Bi-based one. While strong pairing in the IP has been highlighted as the key element of trilayer cuprates, the present results suggest that the enhanced pairing energy in the OP is essential for the highest $T_\mathrm{c}$ at ambient pressure realized in the Hg-based trilayer cuprate.

Inhomogeneous reduction-annealing effects on the electron-doped cuprate superconductor revealed by micro-focused angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

The development of the protect-annealing method has extended the superconductivity of the electron-doped cuprate Pr$_{1.3-x}$La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (PLCCO) into lower Ce concentrations, while the superconducting volume fraction decreases with underdoping. Employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with a micro-focused beam, we investigated the electronic structure of protect-annealed PLCCO ($x=0.08$) with small superconducting volume fraction. Significant spatial variation of Fermi surface area and shape was observed, suggesting inhomogeneity in electron concentrations and the pseudogap that competes with superconductivity. By performing measurements at dozens of different sample positions, negative and non-monotonic correlation was found between the electron concentration and pseudogap magnitude. The established correlation illustrates a systematic annealing dependence of the electronic structure where a pseudogap abruptly opens with insufficient oxygen reduction.

Discovery of an Antiferromagnetic Topological Nodal-line Kondo Semimetal

The symbiosis of strong interactions, flat bands, topology and symmetry has led to the discovery of exotic phases of matter, including fractional Chern insulators, correlated moiré topological superconductors, and Dirac and Weyl semimetals. Correlated metals, such as those present in Kondo lattices, rely on the screening of local moments by a sea of non-magnetic conduction electrons. Here, we report on a unique topological Kondo lattice compound, CeCo2P2, where the Kondo effect - whose existence under the magnetic Co phase is protected by PT symmetry - coexists with antiferromagnetic order emerging from the flat bands associated with the Co atoms. Remarkably, this is the only known Kondo lattice compound where magnetic order occurs in non-heavy electrons, and puzzlingly, at a temperature significantly higher than that of the Kondo effect. Furthermore, at low temperatures, the emergence of the Kondo effect, in conjunction with a glide-mirror-z symmetry, results in a nodal line protected by bulk topology near the Fermi energy. These unusual properties, arising from the interplay between itinerant and correlated electrons from different constituent elements, lead to novel quantum phases beyond the celebrated topological Kondo insulators and Weyl Kondo semimetals. CeCo2P2 thus provides an ideal platform for investigating narrow bands, topology, magnetism, and the Kondo effect in strongly correlated electron systems.

Influence of oxygen-coordination number on the electronic structure of single-layer La-based cuprates

We present an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the single-layer T*-type structured cuprate SmLa$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ with unique five-fold pyramidal oxygen coordination. Upon varying oxygen content, T*-SmLa$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ evolved from a Mott-insulating to a metallic state where the Luttinger sum rule breaks down under the assumption of a large hole-like Fermi surface. This is in contrast with the known doping evolution of the structural isomer La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ with six-fold octahedral coordination. In addition, quantitatively characterized Fermi surface suggests that the empirical $T_\mathrm{c}$ rule for octahedral oxygen-coordination systems does not apply to T*-SmLa$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$. The present results highlight unique properties of the T*-type cuprates possibly rooted in its oxygen coordination, and necessitate thorough investigation with careful evaluation of disorder effects.

Simultaneous conduction and valence band quantisation in ultra-shallow, high density doping profiles in semiconductors

We demonstrate simultaneous quantisation of conduction band (CB) and valence band (VB) states in silicon using ultra-shallow, high density, phosphorus doping profiles (so-called Si:P $δ$-layers). We show that, in addition to the well known quantisation of CB states within the dopant plane, the confinement of VB-derived states between the sub-surface P dopant layer and the Si surface gives rise to a simultaneous quantisation of VB states in this narrow region. We also show that the VB quantisation can be explained using a simple particle-in-a-box model, and that the number and energy separation of the quantised VB states depend on the depth of the P dopant layer beneath the Si surface. Since the quantised CB states do not show a strong dependence on the dopant depth (but rather on the dopant density), it is straightforward to exhibit control over the properties of the quantised CB and VB states independently of each other by choosing the dopant density and depth accordingly, thus offering new possibilities for engineering quantum matter.
