The Building the Bridge survey for z=3 Ly-alpha emitting galaxies II: Completion of the survey

(Abridged). We aim at bridging the gap between absorption selected and emission selected galaxies at z~3 by probing the faint end of the luminosity function of star-forming galaxies at z~3. We have performed narrow-band imaging in three fields with intervening QSO absorbers (a damped Ly$α$ absorber and two Lyman-limit systems) using the VLT. We target Ly-alpha at redshifts 2.85, 3.15 and 3.20. We find a consistent surface density of about 10 Ly-alpha-emitters per square arcmin per unit redshift in all three fields down to our detection limit of about 3x10^41 ergs s^-1. The luminosity function is consistent with what has been found by other surveys at similar redshifts. About 85% of the sources are fainter than the canonical limit of R=25.5 for most Lyman-break galaxy surveys. In none of the three fields do we detect the emission counterparts of the QSO absorbers. In particular we do not detect the counterpart of the z=2.85 damped Ly-alpha absorber towards Q2138-4427. Narrow-band surveys for Ly-alpha emitters are excellent to probe the faint end of the luminosity function at z~3. There is a very high surface density of this class of objects. This is consistent with a very steep slope of the faint end of the luminosity function as has been inferred by other studies. This faint population of galaxies is playing a central role in the early Universe. There is evidence that this population is dominating the integrated star-formation activity, responsible for the bulk of the ionizing photons at z~3 and likely also responsible for the bulk of the enrichment of the intergalactic medium.

Optical, Infrared, and Ultraviolet Observations of the X-Ray Flash GRB 050416A

We present ultraviolet, optical, and infrared photometry of the afterglow of the X-ray flash XRF 050416A taken between approximately 100 seconds and 36 days after the burst. We find an intrinsic spectral slope between 1930 and 22,200 Angstrom of beta = -1.14 +/- 0.20 and a decay rate of alpha = -0.86 +/- 0.15. There is no evidence for a change in the decay rate between approximately 0.7 and 4.7 days after the burst. Our data implies that there is no spectral break between the optical and X-ray bands between 0.7 and 4.7 days after the burst, and is consistent with the cooling break being redward of the K_s band (22,200 Angstrom) at 0.7 days. The combined ultraviolet/optical/infrared spectral energy distribution shows no evidence for a significant amount of extinction in the host galaxy along the line of sight to XRF 050416A. Our data suggest that the extragalactic extinction along the line of sight to the burst is only approximately A_V = 0.2 mag, which is significantly less than the extinction expected from the hydrogen column density inferred from $X$-ray observations of XRF 050416A assuming a dust-to-gas ratio similar to what is found for the Milky Way. The observed extinction, however, is consistent with the dust-to-gas ratio seen in the Small Magellanic Cloud. We suggest that XRF 050416A may have a two-component jet similar to what has been proposed for GRB 030329. If this is the case the lack of an observed jet break between 0.7 and 42 days is an illusion due to emission from the wide jet dominating the afterglow after approximately 1.5 days.

GRB 050509B: Constraints on short gamma-ray burst models

We have obtained deep optical images with the Very Large Telescope at ESO of the first well-localized short-duration gamma-ray burst, GRB 050509B. From V and R imaging, initiated ~2 days after the GRB trigger and lasting up to three weeks, we detect no variable object inside the small Swift/XRT X-ray error circle down to 2sigma limits of V = 26.5 and R = 25.1. The X-ray error circle includes a giant elliptical galaxy at z = 0.225, which has been proposed as the likely host of this GRB. Our limits indicate that if the GRB originated at z = 0.225, any supernova-like event accompanying the GRB would have to be over 100 times fainter than normal Type Ia SNe or Type Ic hypernovae, 5 times fainter than the faintest known Ia or Ic SNe, and fainter than the faintest known Type II SNe. Moreover, we use the optical limits to constrain the energetics of the GRB outflow. Simple models indicate that, unless the intrinsic energy in the outflow from GRB 050509B was << 10^51 erg, there was very little radioactive material with efficient decay timescales for generating a large luminosity. These limits strongly constrain progenitor models for this short GRB.

On the Afterglow and Host Galaxy of GRB021004: A Comprehensive Study with the Hubble Space Telescope

(Abridged) We report on HST observations of the late-time afterglow and host galaxy of GRB021004 (z=2.33). Although this GRB is one of the best observed so far, there is substantial disagreement between different interpretations of data sets on this burst in the literature. We have observed the field of GRB021004 with the HST at multiple epochs from 3 days until almost 10 months after the burst. With STIS spectroscopy we cover the spectral region 600-1700AA in the restframe. From the limit on the flux recovery bluewards of the Lyman-limit we constrain the HI column density to be above 1x10^18 cm-2 Based on ACS and NICMOS imaging we find that the afterglow evolved achromatically within the errors. The color changes observed by other authors during the first four days must be related to a stochastic phenomenon superimposed on an afterglow component with a constant spectral shape. This achromaticity implies that the cooling break has remained on the blue side of the optical part of the spectrum for at least two weeks after the burst. The optical-to-X-ray slope is consistent with being the same at 1.4 and 52.4 days after the burst. This indicates that the cooling frequency is constant and hence, according to fireball models, that the circumburst medium has a constant density profile. The late-time slope of the lightcurve is in the range alpha_2 = 1.8-1.9, and is inconsistent with a single power-law. This could be due to a late-time flattening caused by the transition to non-relativistic expansion or due to excess emission (a lightcurve `bump') 7 days after burst. The host is a starburst galaxy with no evidence for dust and with strong Ly-alpha emission. The afterglow was located very close (~100 pc) to the center of the host suggesting that the progenitor was associated with a circumnuclear starburst.

Ly-alpha and UV emission from high-redshift GRB hosts: To what extent do GRBs trace star formation?

We report the result of a search for Ly-alpha emission from the host galaxies of the gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) 030226 (z = 1.986), 021004 (z = 2.335) and 020124 (z = 3.198). We find that the host galaxy of GRB 021004 is an extended (around 8 kpc) strong Ly-alpha emitter with a restframe equivalent width (EW) of 68^{+12}_{-11} AA, and a star-formation rate of 10.6 +/- 2.0 M_sun/yr. We do not detect the hosts of GRB 030226 and GRB 020124, but the upper limits on their Ly-alpha fluxes do not rule out large restframe EWs. In the fields of GRB 021004 and GRB 030226 we find seven and five other galaxies, respectively, with excess emission in the narrow-band filter. These galaxies are candidate Ly-alpha emitting galaxies in the environment of the host galaxies. We have also compiled a list of all z > 2 GRB hosts, and demonstrate that a scenario where they trace star formation in an unbiased way is compatible with current observational constraints. Fitting the z=3 luminosity function (LF) under this assumption, results in a characteristic luminosity of R* = 24.6 and a faint end slope of alpha = -1.55, consistent with the LF measured for Lyman-break galaxies.

The extended Lyman-alpha emission surrounding the z=3.04 radio-quiet QSO1205-30: Primordial infalling gas illuminated by the quasar?

We present spectroscopic observations obtained with the FORS1 instrument on the ESO VLT under good seeing conditions of the radio-quiet z_em = 3.04 quasar Q1205-30 and its associated extended Lyman-alpha emission. The extended Lyman-alpha emission was originally found in a deep narrow band image targeting a z_abs = z_em Lyman-limit system in the spectrum of the QSO. Using spectral point-spread function fitting to subtract the QSO spectrum, we clearly detect the extended Lyman-alpha emission as well as two foreground galaxies at small impact parameters (2.12 +- 0.04 and 2.77 +- 0.07 arcsec). The redshifts of the two foreground galaxies are found to be z = 0.4732 and z = 0.865. We determine the redshift and velocity profile for the extended Lyman-alpha emission, and analyzing the velocity offsets between eight QSO emission lines we refine the quasar redshift determination. We use the new redshifts to infer the geometry of the complex. We find that the extended Lyman-alpha emission is clearly associated with the quasar. A Lyman-alpha luminosity of 5.6 x 10^43 erg s^-1 places this extended emission at the high luminosity end of the few previous detections around radio-quiet quasars. The extended Lyman-alpha emission is best explained by hydrogen falling into the dark matter halo inhabited by the quasar.

Properties of Ly-alpha and Gamma Ray Burst selected starbursts at high redshifts

Selection of starbursts through either deep narrow band imaging of redshifted Ly-alpha emitters, or localisation of host galaxies of gamma-ray bursts both give access to starburst galaxies that are significantly fainter than what is currently available from selection techniques based on the continuum (such as Lyman-break selection). We here present results from a survey for Ly-alpha emitters at z=3, conducted at the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope. Furthermore, we briefly describe the properties of host galaxies of gamma-ray bursts at z>2. The majority of both Ly-alpha and gamma-ray burst selected starbursts are fainter than the flux limit of the Lyman-break galaxy sample, suggesting that a significant fraction of the integrated star formation at z~3 is located in galaxies at the faint end of the luminosity function.

The supernova 2003lw associated with X-ray flash 031203

The X-Ray Flash (XRF), 031203 with a host galaxy at z=0.1055, is, apart from GRB980425, the closest Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) or XRF known to date. We monitored its host galaxy from 1-100 days after the burst. In spite of the high extinction to the source and the bright host, a significant increase and subsequent decrease has been detected in the apparent brightness of the host, peaking between 10 and 33 days after the GRB. The only convincing explanation is a supernova (SN) associated with the XRF, SN2003lw. This is the earliest time at which a SN signal is clearly discernible in a GRB/XRF (apart from SN1998bw). SN2003lw is extremely luminous with a broad peak and can be approximately represented by the lightcurve of SN1998bw brightened by ~0.55 mag, implying a hypernova, as observed in most GRB-SNe. The XRF-SN association firmly links XRFs with the deaths of massive stars and further strengthens their connection with GRBs. The fact that SNe are also associated with XRFs implies that Swift may detect a significant population of intermediate redshift SNe very soon after the SN explosions, a sample ideally suited for detailed studies of early SN physics.

A Search for Planets in the Old Open Cluster NGC 6791

We describe the results of a search for transit-like events caused by giant planets occulting stars in the old, metal-rich open cluster NGC 6791 based on BVI-colour photometry from eight nights of observations with the 2.54m Nordic Optical Telescope. To extract the light curves we have used both PSF photometry (DAOPHOT) and the difference imaging technique (ISIS). We have re-analyzed observations from earlier campaigns to search for multiple transits, determine periods of long-period variables, and detect eclipsing binaries. We confirm 20 known variables and have discovered 22 new low-amplitude variables with amplitudes in the range 7--40 mmag and periods 1--16 days. We have found the primary and secondary eclipses of two eclipsing binaries based on the new and older photometric campaigns. The search for transits-like events has turned up a few single-transit candidates. The transit depths are 10 mmag in both the V and I filters over periods of 1.0--2.5 hours, but future observations are required to see whether identical transit-like events recur in these same stars.

Very high column density and small reddening towards GRB 020124 at z = 3.20

We present optical and near-infrared observations of the dim afterglow of GRB 020124, obtained between 2 and 68 hours after the gamma-ray burst. The burst occurred in a very faint (R > 29.5) Damped Ly-alpha Absorber (DLA) at a redshift of z = 3.198 +- 0.004. The derived column density of neutral hydrogen is log(N_H) = 21.7 +- 0.2 and the rest-frame reddening is constrained to be E(B-V) < 0.065, i.e., A_V < 0.20 for standard extinction laws with R_V ~ 3. The resulting dust-to-gas ratio is less than 11 % of that found in the Milky Way, but consistent with the SMC and high-redshift QSO DLAs, indicating a low metallicity and/or a low dust-to-metals ratio in the burst environment. A grey extinction law (large R_V), produced through preferential destruction of small dust grains by the GRB, could increase the derived A_V and dust-to-gas ratio. The dimness of the afterglow is however fully accounted for by the high redshift: If GRB 020124 had been at z = 1 it would have been approximately 1.8 mag brighter--in the range of typical bright afterglows.

The afterglow and the host galaxy of GRB 011211

We present optical, near-infrared, and X-ray observations of the optical afterglow (OA) of the X-ray rich, long-duration gamma-ray burst GRB 011211. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data obtained 14, 26, 32, and 59 days after the burst, show the host galaxy to have a morphology that is fairly typical of blue galaxies at high redshift. We measure its magnitude to be R = 24.95 +/- 0.11. We detect a break in the OA R-band light curve which is naturally accounted for by a collimated outflow geometry. By fitting a broken power-law to the data we find a best fit with a break 1.56 +/- 0.02 days after the burst, a pre-break slope of alpha_1 = -0.95 +/- 0.02, and a post-break slope of alpha_2 = -2.11 +/- 0.07. The UV-optical spectral energy distribution (SED) around 14 hours after the burst is best fit with a power-law with index beta = -0.56 +/- 0.19 reddened by an SMC-like extinction law with a modest A_V = 0.08 +/- 0.08 mag. By comparison, from the XMM-Newton X-ray data at around the same time, we find a decay index of alpha_X = -1.62 +/- 0.36 and a spectral index of beta_X = -1.21 +0.10/-0.15. Interpolating between the UV-optical and X-ray implies that the cooling frequency is located close to ~10^16 Hz in the observer frame at the time of the observations. We argue, using the various temporal and spectral indices above, that the most likely afterglow model is that of a jet expanding into an external environment that has a constant mean density rather than a wind-fed density structure. We estimate the electron energy index for this burst to be p ~ 2.3.

On the Ly-alpha emission from gamma-ray burst host galaxies: evidence for low metallicities

We report on the results of a search for Ly-alpha emission from the host galaxy of the z=2.140 GRB 011211 and other galaxies in its surrounding field. We detect Ly-alpha emission from the host as well as from six other galaxies in the field. The restframe equivalent width of the Ly-alpha line from the GRB 011211 host is about 21 AA. This is the fifth detection of Ly-alpha emission out of five possible detections from GRB host galaxies, strongly indicating that GRB hosts, at least at high redshifts, are Ly-alpha emitters. This is intriguing as only about 25% of the Lyman-Break selected galaxies at similar redshifts have Ly-alpha emission lines with restframe equivalent width larger than 20 AA. Possible explanations are i) a preference for GRB progenitors to be metal-poor as expected in the collapsar model, ii) an optical afterglow selection bias against dusty hosts, and iii) a higher fraction of Ly-alpha emitters at the faint end of the luminosity function for high-z galaxies. Of these, the current evidence seems to favour i).

The Building the Bridge survey for z=3 Ly-alpha emitting galaxies I: method and first results

We present the first results of an observational programme at the ESO Very Large Telescope aimed at detecting a large sample of high-redshift galaxies fainter than the current spectroscopic limit of R=25.5 for Lyman-Break galaxies. In this paper, we describe the results of deep narrow and broad-band imaging and subsequent follow-up multi-object spectroscopy of faint high-redshift galaxies in the fields of the BRI1346-0322 and Q2138-4427. These QSOs have intervening absorbers, at redshifts z=2.85 and z=3.15 respectively, for which redshifted Ly-alpha emission falls within less than a few AA from the central wavelengths of existing VLT (~60 AA wide) narrow-band filters. We selected 37 and 27 candidate emission-line galaxies in the two fields respectively. About 85% of the candidates have R-band magnitudes fainter than R=25.5. The first spectroscopic follow-up of a sub-sample of the candidates resulted in 41 confirmed candidates and 4 foreground galaxies (three [OII] emitters and one CIV emitter). The confirmation rate is 82% and 68% in the field of BRI1346-0322 and Q2138-4427 respectively. In addition, we serendipitously detect a number of other emission-line sources on some of the slitlets not used for candidates. Of these, 9 are also most likely Ly-alpha emitters with redshifts ranging from 1.98 to 3.47. The redshift distribution of confirmed candidates in the field of BRI1346-0322 is consistent with being drawn from a uniform distribution weighted by the filter response curve, whereas the galaxies in the field of Q2138-4427 have redshifts clustering very close to the redshift of the damped Ly-alpha absorber. This latter fact indicates the existence of a large `pancake'-like structure confirming the earlier suggestions of Francis & Hewitt (1993).

Ly-alpha emission from GRB host galaxies

Ly-alpha emission is indicative of on-going star formation in a dust-poor environment. Ly-alpha imaging is therefore a probe of the star formation rate and of the dust-content of Gamma-Ray Burst host galaxies. Both of these parameters are central to our understanding of GRB progenitors and of how the environments affect the propagation of afterglow emission out of host galaxies. We have started a program aimed at imaging high redshift (z>2) host galaxies of GRBs at the Ly-alpha resonance line from neutral hydrogen. Here were report the results from imaging of the fields of GRB 000301C and GRB 000926 and outline upcoming observations of further hosts.

Absorption Systems in the Spectrum of GRB 021004

We report on a 3600 s spectrum of GRB 021004 obtained with the Nordic Optical Telecope on La Palma 10.71 hours after the burst. We identify absorption lines from five systems at redshifts 1.3806, 1.6039, 2.2983, 2.3230, and 2.3292. In addition we find an emission line which, if due to Ly-alpha from the host galaxy, gives a redshift of 2.3351. The nearest absorber is blueshifted by 530 km/s with respect to this line, consistent with shifts seen in Damped Ly-alpha and Lyman-Break galaxies at similar redshifts. The emission line flux is 2.46+-0.50 x 10^-16 erg/s/cm^2. Some of the absorption systems are "line-locked", an effect often seen in QSO absorption systems believed to originate close to the QSO central engine.

Building the bridge between Damped Ly-alpha Absorbers and Lyman Break galaxies

In 2000, we started the program ``Building the Bridge between Damped Ly-alpha Absorbers and Lyman-Break Galaxies: Ly-alpha Selection of Galaxies'' at the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope. This project is an attempt to use Ly-alpha selection of high-z galaxies to bridge the gap between absorption- and emission-selected galaxies by creating a large database of z=3 galaxies belonging to the abundant population of faint (R>25.5) galaxies probed by the Damped Ly-alpha Absorbers (DLAs). Here we present the first results of our program, namely the results from a deep Ly-alpha study of the field of the z=2.85 DLA towards Q2138-4427.

Constraints on (Omega_m,Omega_Lambda) using distributions of inclination angles for high redshift filaments

In this paper we present a scale free method to determine the cosmological parameters (Omega_m, Omega_Lambda). The method is based on the requirement of isotropy of the distribution of orientations of cosmological filaments. The current structure formation paradigm predicts that the first structures to form are voids and filaments, causing a web-like structure of the matter distribution at high redshifts. Recent observational evidence suggests that the threads, or filaments, of the cosmic web most easily are mapped in Ly-alpha emission. We describe how such a 3D map can be used to constrain the cosmological parameters in a way which, contrary to most other cosmological tests, does not require the use of a standard rod or a standard candle. We perform detailed simulations in order to define the optimal survey parameters for the definition of an observing programme aimed to address this test, and to investigate how statistical and observational errors will influence the results. We conclude that observations should target filaments of comoving size 15-50 Mpc in the redshift range 2-4, and that each filament must be defined by at least four Ly-alpha emitters. Detection of 20 filaments will be sufficient to obtain a result, while 50 filaments will make it possible to place significant new constraints on the values of Omega_m and Omega_Lambda permitted by the current supernova observations. In a future paper we study how robust these conclusions are to systematic velocities in the survey box.

An HST study of three very faint GRB host galaxies

As part of the HST/STIS GRB host survey program we present the detection of three faint gamma-ray burst (GRB) host galaxies based on an accurate localisation using ground-based data of the optical afterglows (OAs). A common property of these three hosts is their extreme faintness. The location at which GRBs occur with respect to their host galaxies and surrounding environments are robust indicators of the nature of GRB progenitors. The bursts studied here are among the four most extreme outliers, in terms of relative distance from the host center, in the recent comprehensive study of Bloom et al. 2002. We obtain a revised and much higher probability that the galaxies identified as hosts indeed are related to the GRBs (P(n_chance)=0.78, following Bloom et al. 2002), thereby strengthening the conclusion that GRBs are preferentially located in star-forming regions in their hosts. Apart from being faint, the three hosts consist of multiple structures, indicative of merging and active star-formation. For one of the hosts, GRB 980329, we estimate a photometric redshift of z~3.5.
