Gamma/hadron separation in IACTs using 3D EAS variables

A new approach to Gamma/Hadron separation algorithms is proposed. The differences between Gamma and Hadron showers are notorious in two main aspects. The first is the wideness of the shower, and the second is the distribution of the angles of emission of Cherenkov photons in respect to the shower main axis. Using more than one IAC telescope, and their respective bi-dimensional images of arrival directions of the Cherenkov photons, the 3D geometrical characteristics of the shower can be reconstructed.

The sensitivity of cosmic ray air shower experiments for excited lepton detection

In models with substructure in the fermionic sector, excited fermion states are expected. Excited leptons could be produced in the interaction of high energy quasi-horizontal cosmic neutrinos with the atmosphere via neutral and charged current processes, $νN \to ν^* X$ and $νN \to \ell^* X$. The hadronic component X, and possibly part of the excited lepton decay products, would originate an extensive air shower, observable in large cosmic ray experiments. In this paper, the sensitivity of present and planned very high energy cosmic ray experiments to excited lepton production is estimated and discussed.

Sensitivity of large air shower experiments for new physics searches

Searches for physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics are performed at accelerators worldwide. Although having poorer detection capabilities and large beam uncertainties, ultra high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) experiments present a unique opportunity to look for new physics far beyond the TeV. Nearly horizontal energetic neutrinos, seeing a large atmospheric target volume and with negligible background from "ordinary" cosmic rays, are ideal to explore rare processes. The sensitivity of present and planned experiments to different new physics scenarios is estimated, including mini black-holes, excited leptons and leptoquarks.

The sensitivity of cosmic ray air shower experiments for leptoquark detection

Leptoquarks arise naturally in models attempting the unification of the quark and lepton sectors of the standard model of particle physics. Such particles could be produced in the interaction of high energy quasi-horizontal cosmic neutrinos with the atmosphere, via their direct coupling to a quark and a neutrino. The hadronic decay products of the leptoquark, and possibly its leptonic decay products would originate an extensive air shower, observable in large cosmic ray experiments. In this letter, the sensitivity of present and planned very high energy cosmic ray experiments to the production of leptoquarks of different types is estimated and discussed.

Microscopic black hole detection in UHECR: the double bang signature

According to recent conjectures on the existence of large extra dimensions in our universe, black holes may be produced during the interaction of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays with the atmosphere. However, and so far, the proposed signatures are based on statistical effects, not allowing identification on an event by event basis, and may lead to large uncertainties. In this note, events with a double bang topology, where the production and instantaneous decay of a microscopic black hole (first bang) is followed, at a measurable distance, by the decay of an energetic tau lepton (second bang) are proposed as an almost background free signature. The characteristics of these events and the capability of large cosmic ray experiments to detect them are discussed.
