Conceptual design of the Spin Physics Detector

The Spin Physics Detector, a universal facility for studying the nucleon spin structure and other spin-related phenomena with polarized proton and deuteron beams, is proposed to be placed in one of the two interaction points of the NICA collider that is under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna, Russia). At the heart of the project there is huge experience with polarized beams at JINR. The main objective of the proposed experiment is the comprehensive study of the unpolarized and polarized gluon content of the nucleon. Spin measurements at the Spin Physics Detector at the NICA collider have bright perspectives to make a unique contribution and challenge our understanding of the spin structure of the nucleon. In this document the Conceptual Design of the Spin Physics Detector is presented.

Radioactive contamination of ZnWO4 crystal scintillators

The radioactive contamination of ZnWO4 crystal scintillators has been measured deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the INFN in Italy with a total exposure 3197 kg x h. Monte Carlo simulation, time-amplitude and pulse-shape analyses of the data have been applied to estimate the radioactive contamination of the ZnWO4 samples. One of the ZnWO4 crystals has also been tested by ultra-low background gamma spectrometry. The radioactive contaminations of the ZnWO4 samples do not exceed 0.002 -- 0.8 mBq/kg (depending on the radionuclide), the total alpha activity is in the range: 0.2 - 2 mBq/kg. Particular radioactivity, beta active 65Zn and alpha active 180W, has been detected. The effect of the re-crystallization on the radiopurity of the ZnWO4 crystal has been studied. The radioactive contamination of samples of the ceramic details of the set-ups used in the crystals growth has been checked by low background gamma spectrometry. A project scheme on further improvement of the radiopurity level of the ZnWO4 crystal scintillators is briefly addressed.

Proceedings of the 1st International Workshop "Radiopure Scintillators for EURECA" (RPScint'2008)

Workshop RPSCINT'2008 was organized in Kyiv (Ukraine) on 9th and 10th September 2008. The idea was to bring together physicists, chemists, crystal scintillator experts and manufacturers to discuss the requirements of low-count rate experiments, in particular the required radiopurity and scintillation properties; selection and screening of input materials; purification of materials; raw compound preparation; crystal growing, annealing and handling; test of crystals; search for and development of new scintillating materials. Some contributions to the RPSCINT 2008 workshop are presented in these proceedings.

Search for double beta decay of Zinc and Tungsten with the help of low-background ZnWO4 crystal scintillators

Double beta processes in 64-Zn, 70-Zn, 180-W, and 186-W have been searched for with the help of large volume (0.1-0.7 kg) low background ZnWO4 crystal scintillators at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories of the INFN. Total time of measurements exceeds 10 thousands hours. New improved half-life limits on double electron capture and electron capture with positron emission in 64-Zn have been set, in particular (all the limits are at 90% C.L.): T1/2(0nu2EC)> 1.1e20 yr, T1/2(2nuECbeta+)>7.0e20 yr, and T1/2(0nuECbeta+)>4.3e20 yr. The different modes of double beta processes in 70-Zn, 180-W, and 186-W have been restricted at the level of 1e17-1e20 yr.

Further study of CdWO4 crystal scintillators as detectors for high sensitivity double beta experiments: scintillation properties and pulse-shape discrimination

Energy resolution, light yield, non-proportionality in the scintillation response, alpha/beta ratio, pulse shape for gamma rays and alpha particles were studied with CdWO4 crystal scintillators. Some indication for a difference in the emission spectra for gamma rays and alpha particles was observed. No dependence of CdWO4 pulse shape on emission spectrum wavelengths under laser, alpha particles and gamma ray excitation was observed. Dependence of scintillation pulse shape for gamma quanta and alpha particles and pulse-shape discrimination ability on temperature was measured in the range of 0-24 degrees.

Application of PbWO4 crystal scintillators in experiment to search for double beta decay of 116Cd

PbWO4 crystal scintillators are discussed as an active shield and light-guides in 116Cd double beta decay experiment with CdWO4 scintillators. Scintillation properties and radioactive contamination of PbWO4 scintillators were investigated. Energy resolution of CdWO4 detector, coupled to PbWO4 crystal as a light-guide, was tested. Efficiency of PbWO4-based active shield to suppress background from the internal contamination of PbWO4 crystals was calculated. Using of lead tungstate crystal scintillators as high efficiency 4-pi active shield could allow to build sensitive double beta experiment with 116CdWO4 crystal scintillators.

X-ray multi-energy radiography with scintillator-photodiode detectors

For reconstruction of the spatial structure of many-component objects, it is proposed to use multi-radiography with detection of X-ray by combined detector arrays using detectors of ``scintillator-photodiode'' type. A theoretical model has been developed of multi-energy radiography for thickness measurements of multi-layered systems and systems with defects. Experimental studies of the sensitivity, output signal of various inspection systems based on scintillators $ZnSe(Te)$ and $CsI(Tl)$, and object image reconstruction (with organics and non-ogranics materials singled out) have been carried out.

Multi-energy radiography on the basis of "scintillator-photodiode" detectors

For reconstruction of the spatial structure and thicknesses of complex objects and materials, it is proposed to use multi-radiography with detection of X-ray or gamma-radiation by combined detector arrays of scintillator-photodiode type. Experimental studies have been carried out of the energy dependence of sensitivity of dual-energy inspection systems based on scintillators $ZnSe(Te)$ and $CsI(Tl)$.
