Infinite Mode Quantum Gaussian States

Quantum Gaussian states on Bosonic Fock spaces are quantum versions of Gaussian distributions. In this paper, we explore infinite mode quantum Gaussian states. We extend many of the results of Parthasarathy in \cite{Par10} and \cite{Par13} to the infinite mode case, which includes various characterizations, convexity and symmetry properties.

Additive units of product systems

We introduce the notion of additive units, or `addits', of a pointed Arveson system, and demonstrate their usefulness through several applications. By a pointed Arveson system we mean a spatial Arveson system with a fixed normalised reference unit. We show that the addits form a Hilbert space whose codimension-one subspace of `roots' is isomorphic to the index space of the Arveson system, and that the addits generate the type I part of the Arveson system. Consequently the isomorphism class of the Hilbert space of addits is independent of the reference unit. The addits of a pointed inclusion system are shown to be in natural correspondence with the addits of the generated pointed product system. The theory of amalgamated products is developed using addits and roots, and an explicit formula for the amalgamation of pointed Arveson systems is given, providing a new proof of its independence of the particular reference units. (This independence justifies the terminology `spatial product' of spatial Arveson systems). Finally a cluster construction for inclusion subsystems of an Arveson system is introduced and we demonstrate its correspondence with the action of the Cantor--Bendixson derivative in the context of the random closed set approach to product systems due to Tsirelson and Liebscher.

On the equivalence of separability and extendability of quantum states

Motivated by the notions of $k$-extendability and complete extendability of the state of a finite level quantum system as described by Doherty et al (Phys. Rev. A, 69:022308), we introduce parallel definitions in the context of Gaussian states and using only properties of their covariance matrices derive necessary and sufficient conditions for their complete extendability. It turns out that the complete extendability property is equivalent to the separability property of a bipartite Gaussian state. Following the proof of quantum de Finetti theorem as outlined in Hudson and Moody (Z. Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie und Verw. Gebiete, 33(4):343--351), we show that separability is equivalent to complete extendability for a state in a bipartite Hilbert space where at least one of which is of dimension greater than 2. This, in particular, extends the result of Fannes, Lewis, and Verbeure (Lett. Math. Phys. 15(3): 255--260) to the case of an infinite dimensional Hilbert space whose C* algebra of all bounded operators is not separable.

Additive units of product system

We introduce the notion of additive units and roots of a unit in a spatial product system. The set of all roots of any unit forms a Hilbert space and its dimension is the same as the index of the product system. We show that a unit and all of its roots generate the type I part of the product system. Using properties of roots, we also provide an alternative proof of the Powers' problem that the cocycle conjugacy class of Powers sum is independent of the choice of intertwining isometries. In the last section, we introduce the notion of cluster of a product subsystem and establish its connection with random sets in the sense of Tsirelson and Liebscher.

Pure Semigroups of Isometries on Hilbert C*-Modules

We show that pure strongly continuous semigroups of adjointable isometries on a Hilbert C*-module are standard right shifts. By counter examples, we illustrate that the analogy of this result with the classical result on Hilbert spaces by Sz.-Nagy, cannot be improved further to understand arbitrary isometry semigroups of isometries in the classical way.

Bures Distance For Completely Positive Maps

D. Bures had defined a metric on the set of normal states on a von Neumann algebra using GNS representations of states. This notion has been extended to completely positive maps between $C^*$-algebras by D. Kretschmann, D. Schlingemann and R. F. Werner. We present a Hilbert $C^*$-module version of this theory. We show that we do get a metric when the completely positive maps under consideration map to a von Neumann algebra. Further, we include several examples and counter examples. We also prove a rigidity theorem, showing that representation modules of completely positive maps which are close to the identity map contain a copy of the original algebra.

The Schur-Horn theorem for operators with finite spectrum

The carpenter problem in the context of $II_1$ factors, formulated by Kadison asks: Let $\mathcal{A} \subset \mathcal{M}$ be a masa in a type $II_1$ factor and let $E$ be the normal conditional expectation from $\mathcal{M}$ onto $\mathcal{A}$. Then, is it true that for every positive contraction $A$ in $\mathcal{A}$, there is a projection $P$ in $\mathcal{M}$ such that $E(P) = A$? In this note, we show that this is true if $A$ has finite spectrum. We will then use this result to prove an exact Schur-Horn theorem for (positive)operators with finite spectrum and an approximate Schur-Horn theorem for general (positive)operators.

The Spatial Product of Arveson Systems is Intrinsic

We prove that the spatial product of two spatial Arveson systems is independent of the choice of the reference units. This also answers the same question for the minimal dilation the Powers sum of two spatial CP-semigroups: It is independent up to cocycle conjugacy.

Inclusion systems and amalgamated products of product systems

Here we generalize the concept of spatial tensor product, introduced by Skeide, of two product systems via a pair of normalized units. This new notion is called amalgamated tensor product of product systems, and now the amalgamation can be done using a contractive morphism. Index of amalgamation product (when done through units) adds up for normalized units but for non-normalized units, the index is one more than the sum. We define inclusion systems and use it as a tool for index computations. It is expected that this notion will have other uses.

Subsystems of Fock Need Not Be Fock: Spatial CP-Semigroups

We show that a product subsystem of a time ordered system (that is, a product system of time ordered Fock modules), though type I, need not be isomorphic to a time ordered product system. In that way, we answer an open problem in the classification of CP-semigroups by product systems. We define spatial strongly continuous CP-semigroups on a unital C*-algebra and characterize them as those that have a Christensen-Evans generator.

Maximal Commutative Subalgebras Invariant for CP-Maps: (Counter-)Examples

We solve, mainly by counterexamples, many natural questions regarding maximal commutative subalgebras invariant under CP-maps or semigroups of CP-maps on a von Neumann algebra. In particular, we discuss the structure of the generators of norm continuous semigroups on B(G) leaving a maximal commutative subalgebra invariant and show that there exists Markov CP-semigroups on M_d without invariant maximal commutative subalgebras for any d>2.

A Problem of Powers and the Product of Spatial Product Systems

In the 2002 AMS summer conference on ``Advances in Quantum Dynamics'' in Mount Holyoke Robert Powers proposed a sum operation for spatial E0-semigroups. Still during the conference Skeide showed that the Arveson system of that sum is the product of spatial Arveson systems. This product may but need not coincide with the tensor product of Arveson systems. The Powers sum of two spatial E0-semigroups is, therefore, up to cocycle conjugacy Skeide's product of spatial noises.

Minimal Cuntz-Krieger Dilations and Representations of Cuntz-Krieger Algebras

Given a contractive tuple of Hilbert space operators satisfying certain $A$-relations we show that there exists a unique minimal dilation to generators of Cuntz-Krieger algebras or its extension by compact operators. This Cuntz-Krieger dilation can be obtained from the classical minimal isometric dilation as a certain maximal $A$-relation piece. We define a maximal piece more generally for a finite set of polynomials in $n$ noncommuting variables. We classify all representations of Cuntz-Krieger algebras ${\mathcal O}_A$ obtained from dilations of commuting tuples satisfying $A$-relations. The universal properties of the minimal Cuntz-Krieger dilation and the WOT-closed algebra generated by it is studied in terms of invariant subspaces.

A completely entangled subspace of maximal dimension

A completely entangled subspace of a tensor product of Hilbert spaces is a subspace with no non-trivial product vector. K. R. Parthasarathy determined the maximum dimension possible for such a subspace. Here we present a simple explicit example of one such space. We determine the set of product vectors in its orthogonal complement and see that it spans whole of the orthogonal complement. This way we are able to determine the minimum dimension possible for an unextendible product basis (UPB) consisting of product vectors which are linearly independent but not necessarily mutually orthogonal.

On Product Systems arising from Sum Systems

Boris Tsirelson constructed an uncountable family of type III product systems of Hilbert spaces through the theory of Gausian spaces, measure type spaces and `slightly coloured noises', using techniques from probability theory. Here we take a purely functional analytic approach and try to have a better understanding of Tsireleson's construction and his examples. We prove an extension of Shale's theorem connecting symplectic group and Weyl representation. We show that the `Shale map' respects compositions (This settles an old conjecture of K. R. Parthasarathy). Using this we associate a product system to a sum system. This construction includes the exponential product system of Arveson, as a trivial case, and the type III examples of Tsirelson. By associating a von Neumann algebra to every `elementary set' in [0,1], in a much simpler and direct way, we arrive at the invariants of the product system introduced by Tsirelson, given in terms of the sum system. Then we introduce a notion of divisibility for a sum system, and prove that the examples of Tsirelson are divisible. It is shown that only type I and type III product systems arise out of divisible sum systems. Finally, we give a sufficient condition for a divisible sum system to give rise to a unitless (type III) product system.

Standard noncommuting and commuting dilations of commuting tuples

We introduce a notion called `maximal commuting piece' for tuples of Hilbert space operators. Given a commuting tuple of operators forming a row contraction there are two commonly used dilations in multivariable operator theory. Firstly there is the minimal isometric dilation consisting of isometries with orthogonal ranges and hence it is a noncommuting tuple. There is also a commuting dilation related with a standard commuting tuple on Boson Fock space. We show that this commuting dilation is the maximal commuting piece of the minimal isometric dilation. We use this result to classify all representations of Cuntz algebra O_n coming from dilations of commuting tuples.
