Supercurrent Stability in a Quasi-1D Weakly Interacting Bose Gas

We discuss a possibility of observing superfluid phenomena in a quasi-1D weakly interacting Bose gas at finite temperatures. The weakness of interaction in combination with generic properties of 1D liquids can result in a situation when relaxational time of supercurrent is essentially larger than the time of experimental observation, and the behavior of the system is indistinguishable from that of a genuine superfluid.

Two Definitions of Superfluid Density

We point out that two different definitions of the superfluid density - through statistical response to static gauge phase and through dynamic response to altering gauge phase - yield, generally speaking, different quantities in $d<3$. The physics leading to this difference is associated with the equilibrium statistics of supercurrent states. Some experimentally observable consequences of this fact are discussed.

Testing quantum correlations in a confined atomic cloud by scattering fast atoms: Direct and time reversed processes

We suggest measuring the one-particle density matrix of a trapped ultracold atomic cloud by scattering fast atoms in a pure momentum state off the cloud. The lowest-order probability for the process, resulting in a pair of outcoming fast atoms for each incoming one, as well as of its time reversed counterpart, turns out to be given by the Fourier transform of the density matrix. Accordingly, important information about quantum correlations can be deduced directly from the differential scattering cross-section of these processes. Several most interesting cases of scattering - from a single condensate containing a vortex, and from a split condensate characterized by some phase difference - are discussed.

Testing quantum correlations in a confined atomic cloud by scattering fast atoms

We suggest measuring one-particle density matrix of a trapped ultracold atomic cloud by scattering fast atoms in a pure momentum state off the cloud. The lowest-order probability of the inelastic process, resulting in a pair of outcoming fast atoms for each incoming one, turns out to be given by a Fourier transform of the density matrix. Accordingly, important information about quantum correlations can be deduced directly from the differential scattering cross-section. A possible design of the atomic detector is also discussed.

Effect of the Tunneling Conductance on the Coulomb Staircase

Quantum fluctuations of the charge in the single electron box are investigated. The rounding of the Coulomb staircase caused by virtual electron tunneling is determined by perturbation theory up to third order in the tunneling conductance and compared with precise Monte Carlo data computed with a new algorithm. The remarkable agreement for large conductance indicates that presently available experimental data on Coulomb charging effects in metallic nanostructures can be well explained by finite order perturbative results.

Quasicondensation in 2D Interacting Bose Gas: Quantum Monte Carlo Study

We present a detailed Monte Carlo study of correlations in an interacting two-dimensional Bose gas. The data for one-particle density matrix in coordinate representation are compared to the results for the local many-particle density correlators, which are responsible for the recombination rate in real experiments. We found that the appearance and growth of quasicondensate fluctuations changes local correlations between the particles well before the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition point. The amplitude of the $1/m!$-effect is very sensitive even to a rather moderate interaction, and is considerably smaller than its limiting value.

Exact, Complete, and Universal Continuous-Time Worldline Monte Carlo Approach to the Statistics of Discrete Quantum Systems

We show how the worldline quantum Monte Carlo procedure, which usually relies on an artificial time discretization, can be formulated directly in continuous time, rendering the scheme exact. For an arbitrary system with discrete Hilbert space, none of the configuration update procedures contain small parameters. We find that the most effective update strategy involves the motion of worldline discontinuities (both in space and time), i.e., the evaluation of the Green's function. Being based on local updates only, our method nevertheless allows one to work with the grand canonical ensemble and non-zero winding numbers, and to calculate any dynamic correlation function as easily as expectation values of, e.g., total energy. The principles found for the update in continuous time generalize to any continuous variables in the space of discrete virtual transitions, and in principle also make it possible to simulate continuous systems exactly.

Quantum spin chains in a magnetic field

We demonstrate that the ``worm'' algorithm allows very effective and precise quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations of spin systems in a magnetic field, and its auto-correlation time is rather insensitive to the value of H at low temperature. Magnetization curves for the $s=1/2$ and $s=1$ chains are presented and compared with existing Bethe ansatz and exact diagonalization results. From the Green function analysis we deduce the magnon spectra in the s=1 system, and directly establish the "relativistic" form E(p)=(Δ^2 +v^2 p^2)^{1/2} of the dispersion law.

Phase Transitions in One-Dimensional Truncated Bosonic Hubbard Model and Its Spin-1 Analog

We study one-dimensional truncated (no more than 2 particles on a site) bosonic Hubbard model in both repulsive and attractive regimes by exact diagonalization and exact worldline Monte Carlo simulation. In the commensurate case (one particle per site) we demonstrate that the point of Mott-insulator -- superfluid transition, $(U/t)_c=0.50\pm 0.05$, is remarkably far from that of the full model. In the attractive region we observe the phase transition from one-particle superfluid to two-particle one. The paring gap demonstrates a linear behavior in the vicinity of the critical point. The critical state features marginal response to the gauge phase. We argue that the two-particle superfluid is a macroscopic analog of a peculiar phase observed earlier in a spin-1 model with axial anisotropy.

Evolution of Correlation Properties and Appearance of Broken Symmetry in the Process of Bose-Einstein Condensation

We consider the self-evolution of strongly non-equilibrium interacting Bose gas. Due to the mere fact of large (as compared to unity) occupation numbers in the initial state the problem is directly reduced to the question of temporal evolution of the statistical matrix diagonal in the coherent-state representation. Strictly speaking, gauge symmetry is not destroyed even when the long-range ordering is completed, owing to the ineviatble averaging over the ensemble. Actual symmetry breaking can occur only as a result of introducing a small term of the Hamiltonian violating conservation of particles, or quantum-mechanical measurement, also implying non-conservation of particles.

Exact Quantum Monte Carlo Process for the Statistics of Discrete Systems

We introduce an exact Monte Carlo approach to the statistics of discrete quantum systems which does not rely on the standard fragmentation of the imaginary time, or any small parameter. The method deals with discrete objects, kinks, representing virtual transitions at different moments of time. The global statistics of kinks is reproduced by explicit local procedures, the key one being based on the exact solution for the biased two-level system.

Wigner Crystalization in the Lowest Landau Level for $ν\ge 1/5$

By means of exact diagonalization we study the low-energy states of seven electrons in the lowest Landau level which are confined by a cylindric external potential modelling the rest of a macroscopic system and thus controlling the filling factor $ν$. Wigner crystal is found to be the ground state for filling factors between $ ν= 1/3$ and $ ν= 1/5$ provided electrons interact via the bare Coulomb potential. Even at $ν=1/5$ the solid state has lower energy than the Laughlin's one, although the two energies are rather close. We also discuss the role of pseudopotential parameters in the lowest Landau level and demonstrate that the earlier reported gapless state, appearing when the short-range part of the interaction is suppressed, has nothing in common with the Wigner crystalization in pure Coulomb case.

Supercurrent States in 1D Finite-Size Rings

We consider topological supercurrent excitations (SC) in 1D mesoscopic rings. Under certain conditions such excitations are well-defined except for (i) a tunneling between resonating states with clockwise and anti-clockwise currents, which may be characterized by the amplitude $Δ$, and (ii) a decay of SC assisted by phonons of the substrate, both effects being macroscopically small. Most attention is paid to the calculation of the macroscopic scaling of $Δ$ (the main superfluid characteristic of a mesoscopic system) under different conditions: a commensurate system, a system with single impurity, and a disordered system. The results are in a very good agreement with the exact-diagonalization spectra of the boson Hubbard models. Apart from really 1D electron wires we discuss two other important experimental systems: the 2D electron gas in the FQHE state and quasi-1D superconducting rings. We suggest some experimental setups for studying SC, e.g., via persistent current measurements, resonant electro-magnetic absorption or echo signals, and relaxation of the metastable current states.
