The fully differential single-top-quark cross section in next-to-leading order QCD

We present a new next-to-leading order calculation for fully differential single-top-quark final states. The calculation is performed using phase space slicing and dipole subtraction methods. The results of the methods are found to be in agreement. The dipole subtraction method calculation retains the full spin dependence of the final state particles. We show a few numerical results to illustrate the utility and consistency of the resulting computer implementations.

The two cutoff phase space slicing method

The phase space slicing method of two cutoffs for next-to-leading-order Monte-Carlo style QCD corrections has been applied to many physics processes. The method is intuitive, simple to implement, and relies on a minimum of process dependent information. Although results for specific applications exist in the literature, there is not a full and detailed description of the method. Herein such a description is provided, along with illustrative examples; details, which have not previously been published, are included so that the method may be applied to additional hard scattering processes.

B Physics at the Tevatron: Run II and Beyond

This report provides a comprehensive overview of the prospects for B physics at the Tevatron. The work was carried out during a series of workshops starting in September 1999. There were four working groups: 1) CP Violation, 2) Rare and Semileptonic Decays, 3) Mixing and Lifetimes, 4) Production, Fragmentation and Spectroscopy. The report also includes introductory chapters on theoretical and experimental tools emphasizing aspects of B physics specific to hadron colliders, as well as overviews of the CDF, D0, and BTeV detectors, and a Summary.

Low-Energy Supersymmetry and the Tevatron Bottom-Quark Cross Section

A long-standing discrepancy between the bottom-quark production cross section and predictions of perturbative quantum chromodynamics is addressed. We show that pair production of light gluinos, of mass 12 to 16 GeV, with two-body decays into bottom quarks and light bottom squarks, yields a bottom-quark production rate in agreement with hadron collider data. We examine constraints on this scenario from low-energy data and make predictions that may be tested at the next run of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider.

Direct probes of R-parity-violating supersymmetric couplings via single-top-squark production

We study the s-channel production of a single top squark in hadron collisions through an R-parity-violating mechanism, examining in detail the case in which the squark decays through an R-parity-conserving process into a bottom quark, a lepton, and missing energy. We show that the top squark can be discovered if its mass is less than 400 GeV, or that the current bound on the size of the R-parity-violating couplings can be reduced by up to one order of magnitude with existing data and by two orders of magnitude at the forthcoming run II of the Fermilab Tevatron.

Compatibility of various approaches to heavy-quark fragmentation

We find that the definition of the heavy-quark fragmentation function given by Jaffe and Randall differs by a factor of the longitudinal-momentum fraction z from the standard Collins-Soper definition. Once this factor is taken into account, the explicit calculation of Braaten et al. is found to be in agreement with the general analysis of Jaffe and Randall. We also examine the model of Peterson et al. for heavy-quark fragmentation and find that the quoted values of the width and of the value of $z$ at the maximum are in error. The corrected values are in agreement with the analysis of Jaffe and Randall.

Variable flavor number schemes versus fixed order perturbation theory for charm quark electroproduction

Data for D*(2010) meson electroproduction in the range 10 < Q2 < 1350 GeV^2 has recently been presented by the ZEUS collaboration at HERA. We use these results together with previously published data for Q2 > 1 GeV^2 to test whether one can distinguish between different theoretical schemes for charm quark electroproduction. We find that up to the largest Q2 measured, it is not possible to make such a differentiation. Then we point out the regions where differences between the various schemes arise.

Improved Precision Measurement of the Casimir Force Using Gold Surfaces

We report an improved precision measurement of the Casimir force using metallic gold surfaces. The force is measured between a large gold coated sphere and flat plate using an Atomic Force Microscope. The use of gold surfaces removes some theoretical uncertainties in the interpretation of the measurement. The forces are also measured at smaller surface separations. The complete dielectric spectrum of the metal is used in the comparison of theory to the experiment. The average statistical precision remains at the same 1% of the forces measured at the closest separation. These results should lead to the development of stronger constraints on hypothetical forces.

Searching for R-Parity Violation at Run-II of the Tevatron

We present an outlook for possible discovery of supersymmetry with broken R-parity at Run II of the Tevatron. We first present a review of the literature and an update of the experimental bounds. In turn we then discuss the following processes: 1. Resonant slepton production followed by R-parity violating decay, (a) via $LQD^c$ and (b) via $LLE^c$. 2. How to distinguish resonant slepton production from $Z'$ or $W'$ production. 3. Resonant slepton production followed by the decay to neutralino LSP, which decays via $LQD^c$. 4. Resonant stop production followed by the decay to a chargino, which cascades to the neutralino LSP. 5. Gluino pair production followed by the cascade decay to charm squarks which decay directly via $L_1Q_2D^c_1$. 6. Squark pair production followed by the cascade decay to the neutralino LSP which decays via $L_1Q_2D^c_1$. 7. MSSM pair production followed by the cascade decay to the LSP which decays (a) via $LLE^c$, (b) via $LQD^c$, and (c) via $U^cD^cD^c$, respectively. 8. Top quark and top squark decays in spontaneous R-parity violation.

Single-top-squark production via R-parity-violating supersymmetric couplings in hadron collisions

Single-top-squark production via q q' -> \bar{\tilde{t_1}} probes R-parity-violating extensions of the minimal supersymmetric standard model though the λ''_{3ij} couplings. For masses in the range 180-325 GeV, and λ''_{3ij} > 0.02-0.06, we show that discovery of the top squark is possible with 2 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity at run II of the Fermilab Tevatron. The bound on λ''_{3ij}$ can be reduced by up to an order of magnitude with existing data from run I, and by two orders of magnitude at run II if the top squark is not found.

Heavy Quark Production in Deep-Inelastic Scattering at HERA

We discuss two topics in the production of heavy quarks in deep-inelastic scattering: the next-to-leading order Monte-Carlo HVQDIS and the next-to-leading logarithmic resummation of soft gluon effects, including estimates of next-to-next-to-leading order corrections therefrom.

Detailed Comparison of Next-to-Leading Order Predictions for Jet Photoproduction at HERA

The precision of new HERA data on jet photoproduction opens up the possibility to discriminate between different models of the photon structure. This requires equally precise theoretical predictions from perturbative QCD calculations. In the past years, next-to-leading order calculations for the photoproduction of jets at HERA have become available. Using the kinematic cuts of recent ZEUS analyses, we compare the predictions of three calculations for different dijet and three-jet distributions. We find that in general all three calculations agree within the statistical accuracy of the Monte Carlo integration yielding reliable theoretical predictions. In certain restricted regions of phase space, the calculations differ by up to 5%.

The Reach of CERN LEP2 and Fermilab Tevatron Upgrades for Higgs Bosons in Supersymmetric Models

Luminosity upgrades of the Fermilab Tevatron pbar-p collider have been shown to allow experimental detection of a Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson up to $m_{H_{SM}}\sim 120$ GeV via $WH_{SM} \to \ellνb\bar{b}$ events. This limit nearly saturates the parameter space for many models of weak scale supersymmetry (SUSY) with a minimal particle content. It is therefore interesting to examine the SUSY Higgs reach of future Tevatron experiments. Contours are presented of Higgs boson reach for CERN LEP2 and Tevatron luminosity upgrades for three models of weak scale SUSY: the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), the minimal Supergravity model (mSUGRA) and a simple Gauge Mediated SUSY Breaking Model (GMSB). In each case we find a substantial gain in reach at the Tevatron with integrated luminosity increasing from 10 fb^{-1} to 25-30 fb^{-1}. With the larger integrated luminosity, a Higgs search at the Tevatron should be able to probe essentially the entire parameter space of these models. While a discovery would be very exciting, a negative result would severely constrain our ideas about how weak scale supersymmetry is realized.

Charm quark and D^* cross sections in deeply inelastic scattering at DESY HERA

A next-to-leading order Monte Carlo program for the calculation of heavy quark cross sections in deeply inelastic scattering is described. Concentrating on charm quark and D^*(2010) production at HERA, several distributions are presented and their variation with respect to charm quark mass, parton distribution set, and renormalization-factorization scale is studied.

Jet photoproduction and the structure of the photon

Various jet observables in photoproduction are studied and compared to data from HERA. The feasibility of using a dijet sample for constraining the parton distributions in the photon is then studied. For the current data the experimental and theoretical uncertainties are comparable to the variation due to changing the photon parton distribution set.

Next-to-leading order slepton pair production at hadron colliders

We compute total cross sections for various slepton pair production reactions in next-to-leading order QCD. For pbarp collisions at root S=2TeV, we find leading order cross sections to be enhanced by typically 35% to 40%. For pp collisions at root S=14TeV, the enhancement ranges from 25% to 35% depending on the mass of the sleptons. We comment upon the phenomenological implications of these results.
