Reconstruction of proton relative stopping power with a granular calorimeter detector model

Proton computed tomography (pCT) aims to facilitate precise dose planning for hadron therapy, a promising and effective method for cancer treatment. Hadron therapy utilizes protons and heavy ions to deliver well focused doses of radiation, leveraging the Bragg peak phenomenon to target tumors while sparing healthy tissues. The Bergen pCT Collaboration aims to develop a novel pCT scanner, and accompanying reconstruction algorithms to overcome current limitations. This paper focuses on advancing the track- and image reconstruction algorithms, thereby enhancing the precision of the dose planning and reducing side effects of hadron therapy. A neural network aided track reconstruction method is presented.

Ge thin-films with tantalum diffusion-barriers for use in Nb-based superconductor technology

Germanium thin films are an excellent candidate for use as a low-loss dielectric in superconducting microwave resonators, a low-loss inter-layer metal wiring dielectric, and passivation layers in microwave and Josephson junction devices. In Ge/Nb structures deposited at 400 {\deg}C, we observe intermixing over as much as 20 nm. The addition of a 10 nm Ta diffusion barrier layer reduces the superconductor/dielectric intermixing to less than 5 nm and enhances the structural properties of deposited a-Ge layers based on Raman spectroscopy. Additionally, superconducting microwave resonators fabricated at room-temperature on crystalline Ge substrates with a Ta barrier layer show marked improvement in total and power-dependent two-level system microwave losses.

Stationary solutions of driven fourth- and sixth-order Cahn-Hilliard type equations

New types of stationary solutions of a one-dimensional driven sixth-order Cahn-Hilliard type equation that arises as a model for epitaxially growing nano-structures such as quantum dots, are derived by an extension of the method of matched asymptotic expansions that retains exponentially small terms. This method yields analytical expressions for far-field behavior as well as the widths of the humps of these spatially non-monotone solutions in the limit of small driving force strength which is the deposition rate in case of epitaxial growth. These solutions extend the family of the monotone kink and antikink solutions. The hump spacing is related to solutions of the Lambert $W$ function. Using phase space analysis for the corresponding fifth-order dynamical system, we use a numerical technique that enables the efficient and accurate tracking of the solution branches, where the asymptotic solutions are used as initial input. Additionally, our approach is first demonstrated for the related but simpler driven fourth-order Cahn-Hilliard equation, also known as the convective Cahn-Hilliard equation.

Thin film dynamics on a vertically rotating disk partially immersed in a liquid bath

The axisymmetric flow of a thin liquid film is considered for the problem of a vertically rotating disk that is partially immersed in a liquid bath. A model for the fully three-dimensional free-boundary problem of the rotating disk, that drags a thin film out of the bath is set up. From this, a dimension-reduced extended lubrication approximation that includes the meniscus region is derived. This problem constitutes a generalization of the classic drag-out and drag-in problem to the case of axisymmetric flow. The resulting nonlinear fourth-order partial differential equation for the film profile is solved numerically using a finite element scheme. For a range of parameters steady states are found and compared to asymptotic solutions. Patterns of the film profile, as a function of immersion depth and angular velocity are discussed.
