Intermediate Field Spin(on) Dynamics in $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$

We present comprehensive inelastic neutron spectroscopic maps of the magnetic field-induced disordered phase of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid candidate material $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$. For fields along both in-plane high-symmetry directions we observe that the spin excitation spectrum at and above a magnetic field of 8~T is gapped. Excitation modes then sharpen for increasing field but are consistently broader than experimental resolution even at 13.5~T. The out-of-plane dispersion diminishes in the 7-10~T regime, signifying enhanced two-dimensional behavior as the in-plane liquid correlations are established. In this regime, excitations are very broad and largely flat for all accessible energy-momenta, which is kinematically at odds with a magnon-decay picture. By contrast, a continuum of fractionalized excitations naturally yields a broad continuum response, which crucially may be accompanied by sharper modes of bound states of fractionalized excitations. Their damping by the continuum accounts for the observed spectral broadening and field dependence. Our results provide strong evidence for the existence of fractionalized excitations in $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ in a magnetic field.

Arithmetic and geometry of Markov polynomials

Markov polynomials are the Laurent-polynomial solutions of the generalised Markov equation $$X^2 + Y^2 + Z^2 = kXYZ, \quad k=\frac{x^2 + y^2 + z^2}{x y z}$$ which are the results of cluster mutations applied to the initial triple $(x, y, z)$. They were first introduced and studied by Itsara, Musiker, Propp and Viana, who proved, in particular, that their coefficients are non-negative integers. We study the coefficients of Markov polynomials as functions on the corresponding Newton polygons, proposing several new conjectures. Some of these conjectures are proved for the special cases of Markov polynomials corresponding to Fibonacci and Pell numbers.

Quantum Kronecker fractions

A few years ago Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko introduced an interesting quantization of the real numbers as certain power series in a quantization parameter $q.$ It is known now that the golden ratio has minimal radius among all these series. We study the rational numbers having maximal radius of convergence equal to 1, which we call Kronecker fractions. We prove that the corresponding continued fraction expansions must be palindromic and describe all Kronecker fractions with prime denominators. We found several infinite families of Kronecker fractions and all Kronecker fractions with denominator less than 5000. We also comment on the irrational case and on the relation with braids, rational knots and links.

Incident Beamline Design for a Modern Cold Triple Axis Spectrometer at the High Flux Isotope Reactor

A modern cold triple axis spectrometer is being planned for the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Here, we describe the design of an incident beamline that will put a flux of $\sim 10^8\mathrm{\frac{n}{cm^2 s}}$ on a sample with an area of 2 cm x 2 cm. It takes current physical constraints at HFIR into account and it can accommodate both single and multiplexed analyzer-detector secondary spectrometers and large superconducting magnets. The proposed incident beamline includes a multi-channel guide with horizontal focusing, a neutron velocity selector, components to facilitate an incident beam polarization option, and a double-focusing pyrolytic graphite monochromator. This work describes the process of optimizing the guide system and monochromator and summarizes the expected performance of the incident beamline for non-polarized operation.

Pressure control of magnetic order and excitations in the pyrochlore antiferromagnet MgCr$_{2}$O$_{4}$

MgCr$_{2}$O$_{4}$ is one of the best-known realizations of the pyrochlore-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. The strong antiferromagnetic exchange interactions are perturbed by small further-neighbor exchanges such that this compound may in principle realize a spiral spin liquid (SSL) phase in the zero-temperature limit. However, a spin Jahn-Teller transition below $T_{\rm N} \approx 13$ K yields a complicated long-range magnetic order with multiple coexisting propagation vectors. We present neutron scattering and thermo-magnetic measurements of MgCr$_{2}$O$_{4}$ samples under applied hydrostatic pressure up to $P=1.7$ GPa demonstrating the existence of multiple close-lying nearly degenerate magnetic ground states. We show that the application of hydrostatic pressure increases the ordering temperature by around 0.8 K per GPa and increases the bandwidth of the magnetic excitations by around 0.5 meV per GPa. We also evidence a strong tendency for the preferential occupation of a subset of magnetic domains under pressure. In particular, we show that the $\boldsymbol{k}=(0,0,1)$ magnetic phase, which is almost negligible at ambient pressure, dramatically increases in spectral weight under pressure. This modifies the spectrum of magnetic excitations, which we interpret unambiguously as spin waves from multiple magnetic domains. Moreover, we report that the application of pressure reveals a feature in the magnetic susceptibility above the magnetostructural transition. We interpret this as the onset of a short-range ordered phase associated with $\boldsymbol{k}=(0,0,1)$, previously not observed in magnetometry measurements.

Extreme eigenvalues of random matrices from Jacobi ensembles

Two-term asymptotic formulae for the probability distribution functions for the smallest eigenvalue of the Jacobi $ \beta $-Ensembles are derived for matrices of large size in the r\'egime where $ \beta > 0 $ is arbitrary and one of the model parameters $ \alpha_1 $ is an integer. By a straightforward transformation this leads to corresponding results for the distribution of the largest eigenvalue. The explicit expressions are given in terms of multi-variable hypergeometric functions, and it is found that the first-order corrections are proportional to the derivative of the leading order limiting distribution function. In some special cases $ \beta = 2 $ and/or small values of $ \alpha_1 $, explicit formulae involving more familiar functions, such as the modified Bessel function of the first kind, are presented.

Observation of the Magnon Polarization

We measure the mode-resolved direction of the precessional motion of the magnetic order, i.e., magnon polarization, via the chiral term of inelastic polarized neutron scattering spectra. The magnon polarisation is important in spintronics, affecting thermodynamic properties such as the magnitude and sign of the spin Seebeck effect. The observation of both signs of magnon polarization in Y3Fe5O12 also gives direct proof of its ferrimagnetic nature. The experiments agree very well with atomistic simulations of the scattering cross section.

Spin-Liquid-Like State in Pure and Mn-Doped TbInO3 with Nearly Triangular Lattice

Inelastic neutron scattering studies in single crystals of TbInO3 and TbIn0.95Mn0.05O3 with nearly-triangular antiferromagnetic lattice are reported. At low energies, a broad and apparently gapless continuum of magnetic excitations, located at the triangular lattice (TL) Brillouin zone boundary, is observed. The data are well described by the uncorrelated nearest-neighbor valence bonds model. At higher energies, a broad excitation branch dispersing from the TL zone boundary is observed. No signs of static magnetic order are found down to the temperatures two orders of magnitude smaller than the effective interaction energy. The fluctuating magnetic moment exceeds two thirds of the Tb3+ free-ion value and is confined to the TL plane. These observations are consistent with a TL-based spin liquid state in TbInO3.

Continuum of quantum fluctuations in a three-dimensional $S\!=\!1$ Heisenberg magnet

Conventional crystalline magnets are characterized by symmetry breaking and normal modes of excitation called magnons with quantized angular momentum $\hbar$. Neutron scattering correspondingly features extra magnetic Bragg diffraction at low temperatures and dispersive inelastic scattering associated with single magnon creation and annihilation. Exceptions are anticipated in so-called quantum spin liquids as exemplified by the one-dimensional spin-1/2 chain which has no magnetic order and where magnons accordingly fractionalize into spinons with angular momentum $\hbar/2$. This is spectacularly revealed by a continuum of inelastic neutron scattering associated with two-spinon processes and the absence of magnetic Bragg diffraction. Here, we report evidence for these same key features of a quantum spin liquid in the three-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet NaCaNi$_2$F$_7$. Through specific heat and neutron scattering measurements, Monte Carlo simulations, and analytic approximations to the equal time correlations, we show that NaCaNi$_2$F$_7$ is an almost ideal realization of the spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a pyrochlore lattice with weak connectivity and frustrated interactions. Magnetic Bragg diffraction is absent and 90\% of the spectral weight forms a continuum of magnetic scattering not dissimilar to that of the spin-1/2 chain but with low energy pinch points indicating NaCaNi$_2$F$_7$ is in a Coulomb phase. The residual entropy and diffuse elastic scattering points to an exotic state of matter driven by frustration, quantum fluctuations and weak exchange disorder.

Excitations in the field-induced quantum spin liquid state of alpha-RuCl3

The Kitaev model on a honeycomb lattice predicts a paradigmatic quantum spin liquid (QSL) exhibiting Majorana Fermion excitations. The insight that Kitaev physics might be realized in practice has stimulated investigations of candidate materials, recently including alpha-RuCl3. In all the systems studied to date, non-Kitaev interactions induce magnetic order at low temperature. However, in-plane magnetic fields of roughly 8 Tesla suppress the long-range magnetic order in alpha-RuCl3 raising the intriguing possibility of a field-induced QSL exhibiting non-Abelian quasiparticle excitations. Here we present inelastic neutron scattering in alpha-RuCl3 in an applied magnetic field. At a field of 8 Tesla, the spin waves characteristic of the ordered state vanish throughout the Brillouin zone. The remaining single dominant feature of the response is a broad continuum centered at the Gamma point, previously identified as a signature of fractionalized excitations. This provides compelling evidence that a field-induced QSL state has been achieved.

Anisotropic exchange within decoupled tetrahedra in the quantum breathing pyrochlore Ba3Yb2Zn5O11

The low energy spin excitation spectrum of the breathing pyrochlore Ba3Yb2Zn5O11 has been investigated with inelastic neutron scattering. Several nearly resolution limited modes with no observable dispersion are observed at 250 mK while, at elevated temperatures, transitions between excited levels become visible. To gain deeper insight, a theoretical model of isolated Yb3+ tetrahedra parametrized by four anisotropic exchange constants is constructed. The model reproduces the inelastic neutron scattering data, specific heat, and magnetic susceptibility with high fidelity. The fitted exchange parameters reveal a Heisenberg antiferromagnet with a very large Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Using this model, we predict the appearance of an unusual octupolar paramagnet at low temperatures and speculate on the development of inter-tetrahedron correlations.

Phonon coupling to dynamic short-range polar order in a relaxor ferroelectric near the morphotropic phase boundary

We report neutron inelastic scattering experiments on single crystal PbMg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$O$_{3}$ doped with 32\% PbTiO$_{3}$, a relaxor ferroelectric that lies close to the morphotropic phase boundary. When cooled under an electric field $\mathbf{E} \parallel$ [001] into tetragonal and monoclinic phases, the scattering cross section from transverse acoustic (TA) phonons polarized parallel to $\mathbf{E}$ weakens and shifts to higher energy relative to that under zero-field-cooled conditions. Likewise, the scattering cross section from transverse optic (TO) phonons polarized parallel to $\mathbf{E}$ weakens for energy transfers $4 \leq \hbar ω\leq 9$ meV. However, TA and TO phonons polarized perpendicular to $\mathbf{E}$ show no change. This anisotropic field response is similar to that of the diffuse scattering cross section, which, as previously reported, is suppressed when polarized parallel to $\mathbf{E}$, but not when polarized perpendicular to $\mathbf{E}$. Our findings suggest that the lattice dynamics and dynamic short-range polar correlations that give rise to the diffuse scattering are coupled.

Neutron inelastic scattering measurements of low energy phonons in the multiferroic BiFeO3

We present neutron inelastic scattering measurements of the low-energy phonons in single crystal BiFeO3. The dispersions of the three acoustic phonon modes (LA along [100], TA1 along [010] and TA2 along [110]) and two low energy optic phonon modes (LO and TO1) have been mapped out between 300 K and 700 K. Elastic constants are extracted from the phonon measurements. The energy linewidths of both TA phonons at the zone boundary clearly broaden when the system is warmed toward the magnetic ordering temperature TN = 640 K. This suggests that the magnetic and low-energy lattice dynamics in this multiferroic material are coupled.

Intermediate statistics for a system with symplectic symmetry: the Dirac rose graph

We study the spectral statistics of the Dirac operator on a rose-shaped graph---a graph with a single vertex and all bonds connected at both ends to the vertex. We formulate a secular equation that generically determines the eigenvalues of the Dirac rose graph, which is seen to generalise the secular equation for a star graph with Neumann boundary conditions. We derive approximations to the spectral pair correlation function at large and small values of spectral spacings, in the limit as the number of bonds approaches infinity, and compare these predictions with results of numerical calculations. Our results represent the first example of intermediate statistics from the symplectic symmetry class.

Derivative moments for characteristic polynomials from the CUE

We calculate joint moments of the characteristic polynomial of a random unitary matrix from the circular unitary ensemble and its derivative in the case that the power in the moments is an odd positive integer. The calculations are carried out for finite matrix size and in the limit as the size of the matrices goes to infinity. The latter asymptotic calculation allows us to prove a long-standing conjecture from random matrix theory.

Localised eigenfunctions in Seba billiards

We describe some new families of quasimodes for the Laplacian perturbed by the addition of a potential formally described by a Dirac delta function. As an application we find, under some additional hypotheses on the spectrum, subsequences of eigenfunctions of Seba billiards that localise around a pair of unperturbed eigenfunctions.

Relationship between scattering matrix and spectrum of quantum graphs

We investigate the equivalence between spectral characteristics of the Laplace operator on a metric graph, and the associated unitary scattering operator. We prove that the statistics of level spacings, and moments of observations in the eigenbases coincide in the limit that all bond lengths approach a positive constant value.

Quantum graphs where back-scattering is prohibited

We describe a new class of scattering matrices for quantum graphs in which back-scattering is prohibited. We discuss some properties of quantum graphs with these scattering matrices and explain the advantages and interest in their study. We also provide two methods to build the vertex scattering matrices needed for their construction.
