ADARI: Visualizing the quality of VLT data

ADARI (Astronomical DAta Reporting Infrastructure) is a system designed for creating graphical reports of astronomical data so that the quality of these products can be assessed. It has been designed from the ground up to be backend-agnostic, meaning the same ADARI code can be sent to a web plotting API, or a code-based plotting API, with no alteration. Quick data inspection is an important feature in data reduction systems. The use cases range from quality control at the telescope, advance quality checks prior to delivering data to the scientists as well as data inspection for users running the pipelines at their home institutes. The goal of ADARI is to deliver the same experience and code for data visualization for all the environments, either running automatically in the Paranal Observatory environment or at the PI premises. ADARI contains a library that can be used to develop the creation of reports as well as a command line tool (genreport) to execute such reports. Most of the time the reports are generated as part of the execution of a data reduction workflow implemented with EDPS, the new ESO system for automatically organising data from ESO instruments and for running the reduction pipelines on them.

Upgrading the GRAVITY fringe tracker for GRAVITY+: Tracking the white light fringe in the non-observable Optical Path Length state-space

Aims. As part of the ongoing GRAVITY+ upgrade of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer infrastructure, we aim to improve the performance of the GRAVITY Fringe-Tracker, and to enable its use by other instruments. Methods. We modify the group delay controller to consistently maintain tracking in the white light fringe, characterised by a minimum group delay. Additionally, we introduce a novel approach in which fringe-tracking is performed in the non-observable Optical Path Length state-space, using a covariance-weighted Kalman filter and an auto-regressive model of the disturbance. We outline this new state-space representation, and the formalism we use to propagate the state-vector and generate the control signal. While our approach is presented specifically in the context of GRAVITY/GRAVITY+, it can easily be adapted to other instruments or interferometric facilities. Results. We successfully demonstrate phase delay tracking within a single fringe, with any spurious phase jumps detected and corrected in less than 100 ms. We also report a significant performance improvement, as evidenced by a reduction of about 30 to 40% in phase residuals, and a much better behaviour under sub-optimal atmospheric conditions. Compared to what was observed in 2019, the median residuals have decreased from 150 nm to 100 nm on the Auxiliary Telescopes and from 250 nm to 150 nm on the Unit Telescopes. Conclusions. The improved phase-delay tracking combined with whit light fringe tracking means that from now-on, the GRAVITY Fringe-Tracker can be used by other instruments operating in different wavebands. The only limitation remains the need for an optical path dispersion adjustment.

Testing pulsation diagnostics in the rapidly oscillating magnetic Ap star $\gamma$ Equ using near-infrared CRIRES+ observations

Pulsations of rapidly oscillating Ap stars and their interaction with the stellar magnetic field have not been studied in the near-IR region despite the benefits these observations offer compared to visual wavelengths. The main advantage of the near-IR is the quadratic dependence of the Zeeman effect on the wavelength, as opposed to the linear dependence of the Doppler effect. To test pulsation diagnostics of roAp stars in the near-IR, we aim to investigate the pulsation behaviour of one of the brightest magnetic roAp stars, $\gamma$Equ, which possesses a strong surface magnetic field of the order of several kilogauss and exhibits magnetically split spectral lines in its spectra. Two magnetically split spectral lines belonging to different elements, the triplet Fe I at 1563.63nm and the pseudo-doublet Ce III at 1629.2nm, were recorded with CRIRES+ over about one hour in the H band with the aim of understanding the character of the line profile variability and the pulsation behaviour of the magnetic field modulus. The profile shapes of both studied magnetically split spectral lines vary in a rather complex manner probably due to a significant decrease in the strength of the longitudinal field component and an increase in the strength of the transverse field components over the last decade. A mean magnetic field modulus of 3.9kG was determined for the Fe I, whereas for the Ce III we observe only about 2.9kG. For comparison, a mean field modulus of 3.4kG was determined using the Zeeman doublet Fe II at 6249.25 in optical PEPSI spectra recorded just about two weeks before the CRIRES+ observations. Different effects that may lead to the differences in the field modulus values are discussed. Our measurements of the mean magnetic field modulus using the line profiles recorded in different pulsational phase bins suggest a field modulus variability of 32G for the Fe I and 102G for the Ce III.

The GRAVITY fringe tracker

The GRAVITY instrument has been commissioned on the VLTI during 2016 and is now available to the astronomical community. It is the first optical interferometer capable of observing sources as faint as magnitude 19 in K-band. This is possible thanks to the fringe tracker which compensates the differential piston based on measurements of a brighter off-axis astronomical reference source. The goal of this paper is to consign the main developments made in the context of the GRAVITY fringe tracker. This could serve as basis for future fringe tracking systems. The paper therefore covers all aspects of the fringe tracker, from hardware, to control software and on-sky observations. Special emphasis is placed on the interaction between the group delay controller and the phase delay controller. The group delay control loop is a simple but robust integrator. The phase delay controller is a state-space control loop based on an auto-regressive representation of the atmospheric and vibrational perturbations. A Kalman filter provides optimal determination of the state of the system. The fringe tracker shows good tracking performance on sources with coherent K magnitudes of 11 on the UTs and 9.5 on the ATs. It can track fringes with an SNR level of 1.5 per DIT, limited by photon and background noises. On the ATs, during good seeing conditions, the optical path delay residuals can be as low as 75 nm root mean square. On the UTs, the performance is limited to around 250 nm because of structural vibrations.

CRIRES-POP: a library of high resolution spectra from 1 to 5 microns II. Data reduction and the spectrum of the K giant 10 Leo

Context. High resolution stellar spectral atlases are valuable resources to astronomy. They are rare in the $1 - 5\,μ$m region for historical reasons, but once available, high resolution atlases in this part of the spectrum will aid the study of a wide range of astrophysical phenomena. Aims. The aim of the CRIRES-POP project is to produce a high resolution near-infrared spectral library of stars across the H-R diagram. The aim of this paper is to present the fully reduced spectrum of the K giant 10 Leo that will form the basis of the first atlas within the CRIRES-POP library, to provide a full description of the data reduction processes involved, and to provide an update on the CRIRES-POP project. Methods. All CRIRES-POP targets were observed with almost 200 different observational settings of CRIRES on the ESO Very Large Telescope, resulting in a basically complete coverage of its spectral range as accessible from the ground. We reduced the spectra of 10 Leo with the CRIRES pipeline, corrected the wavelength solution and removed telluric absorption with Molecfit, then resampled the spectra to a common wavelength scale, shifted them to rest wavelengths, flux normalised, and median combined them into one final data product. Results. We present the fully reduced, high resolution, near-infrared spectrum of 10 Leo. This is also the first complete spectrum from the CRIRES instrument. The spectrum is available online. Conclusions. The first CRIRES-POP spectrum has exceeded our quality expectations and will form the centre of a state-of-the-art stellar atlas. This first CRIRES-POP atlas will soon be available, and further atlases will follow. All CRIRES-POP data products will be freely and publicly available online.

Spectroscopic signatures of magnetospheric accretion in Herbig Ae/Be stars. I. The case of HD101412

Models of magnetically-driven accretion and outflows reproduce many observational properties of T Tauri stars. This concept is not well established for the more massive Herbig Ae/Be stars. We intend to examine the magnetospheric accretion in Herbig Ae/Be stars and search for rotational modulation using spectroscopic signatures, in this first paper concentrating on the well-studied Herbig Ae star HD101412. We used near-infrared spectroscopic observations of the magnetic Herbig Ae star HD101412 to test the magnetospheric character of its accretion disk/star interaction. We reduced and analyzed 30 spectra of HD101412, acquired with the CRIRES and X-shooter spectrographs installed at the VLT (ESO, Chile). The spectroscopic analysis was based on the He I lambda 10,830 and Pa gamma lines, formed in the accretion region. We found that the temporal behavior of these diagnostic lines in the near-infrared spectra of HD101412 can be explained by rotational modulation of line profiles generated by accreting gas with a period P = 20.53+-1.68 d. The discovery of this period, about half of the magnetic rotation period P_m = 42.076 d previously determined from measurements of the mean longitudinal magnetic field, indicates that the accreted matter falls onto the star in regions close to the magnetic poles intersecting the line-of-sight two times during the rotation cycle. We intend to apply this method to a larger sample of Herbig Ae/Be stars.

Probing the Structure of the Accretion Region in a Sample of Magnetic Herbig Ae/Be Stars

We present the results of a study of the temporal behaviour of several diagnostic lines formed in the region of the accretion-disk/star interaction in the three magnetic Herbig Ae stars HD101412, HD104237, and HD190073. More than 100 spectra acquired with the ISAAC, X-shooter, and CRIRES spectrographs installed at the VLT-8m telescope (ESO, Chile), as well as at other observatories (OHP, Crimean AO) were analyzed. The spectroscopic data were obtained in the He I lambda10830, Pa gamma and He I lambda5876 lines. We found that the temporal behaviour of the diagnostic lines in the spectra of all program stars can be widely explained by a rotational modulation of the line profiles generated by a local accretion flow. This result is in good agreement with the predictions of the magnetospheric accretion model. For the first time, the rotation period of HD104237 (P_rot = 5.37+-0.03 days), as well as the inclination angle (i = 21+-4deg) were determined. Additional analysis of the HARPSpol spectra of HD104237 and HD190073, taken from the ESO archive, with the use of the SVD method shows that the magnetic field structure of HD190073 is likely more complex than a simple dipole and contains a circumstellar component. For the first time, the magnetic field of the secondary component of the binary system HD104237 was also detected ( = 128+-10G).

Magnetic fields of Herbig Ae/Be stars

We report on the status of our spectropolarimetric studies of Herbig Ae/Be stars carried out during the last years. The magnetic field geometries of these stars, investigated with spectropolarimetric time series, can likely be described by centred dipoles with polar magnetic field strengths of several hundred Gauss. A number of Herbig Ae/Be stars with detected magnetic fields have recently been observed with X-shooter in the visible and the near-IR, as well as with the high-resolution near-IR spectrograph CRIRES. These observations are of great importance to understand the relation between the magnetic field topology and the physics of the accretion flow and the accretion disk gas emission.

Line identification in high-resolution, near-infrared CRIRES spectra of chemically peculiar and Herbig Ae stars

The recent availability of ESO's high-resolution spectrograph CRIRES offers now the opportunity to study numerous spectral features in the near-IR in intermediate-mass main-sequence and pre-main-sequence stars. High-resolution CRIRES spectra were obtained in three spectral regions, two regions around 1mu and one region around 1.57mu containing magnetically sensitive Fe I lines. The largest number of near-IR spectral features was detected and identified in the well-studied magnetic Ap star gamma Equ. Nearly 30% of the spectral lines in the Ap star HD154708, with one of the strongest magnetic fields known among the Ap stars of the order of 25kG, remain unidentified due to a lack of atomic data. Only very few lines belonging to the rare earth element group have been identified in both Ap stars. A number of spectral lines including the Ce III and Dy II lines appear magnetically split due to the presence of a strong magnetic field in their atmospheres. Variable behaviour of lines of the elements He, N, Mg, Si, and Fe over the rotation period in the spectra of HD101412 confirm our previous finding of variability in the optical region. Due to the very fast rotation of 51Oph, only a few spectral lines have been identified with certainty.

CRIRES-POP: A library of high resolution spectra in the near-infrared

New instrumental capabilities and the wealth of astrophysical information extractable from the near-infrared wavelength region have led to a growing interest in the field of high resolution spectroscopy at 1-5 mu. We aim to provide a library of observed high-resolution and high signal-to-noise-ratio near-infrared spectra of stars of various types throughout the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. This is needed for the exploration of spectral features in this wavelength range and for comparison of reference targets with observations and models. High quality spectra were obtained using the CRIRES near-infrared spectrograph at ESO's VLT covering the range from 0.97 to 5.3 mu at high spectral resolution. Accurate wavelength calibration and correction for of telluric lines were performed by fitting synthetic transmission spectra for the Earth's atmosphere to each spectrum individually. We describe the observational strategy and the current status and content of the library which includes 13 objects. The first examples of finally reduced spectra are presented. This publication will serve as a reference paper to introduce the library to the community and explore the extensive amount of material.

The narrow, inner CO ring around the magnetic Herbig Ae star, HD 101412

We describe and model emission lines in the first overtone band of CO in the magnetic Herbig Ae star HD 101412. High-resolution CRIRES spectra reveal unusually sharp features which suggest the emission is formed in a thin disk centered at 1 AU with a width 0.32 AU or less. A wider disk will not fit the observations. Previous observations have reached similar conclusions, but the crispness of the new material brings the emitting region into sharp focus.

Beryllium abundances and star formation in the halo and in the thick disk

[abridged] Beryllium is a pure product of cosmic ray spallation. This implies a relatively simple evolution in time of the beryllium abundance and suggests its use as a time-like observable. We study the evolution of Be in the early Galaxy and its dependence on kinematic and orbital parameters. We investigate the formation of the halo and the thick disk of the Galaxy and the use of Be as a cosmochronometer. Beryllium abundances are determined from high resolution, high signal to noise UVES spectra with spectrum synthesis in the largest sample of halo and thick disk stars analyzed to date. We present our observational results in various diagrams. 1) In a log(Be/H) vs [Fe/H] diagram we find a marginal statistical detection of a real scatter, above what expected from measurement errors, with a larger scatter among halo stars. The detection of the scatter is further supported by the existence of pairs of stars with identical atmospheric parameters and different Be abundances. 2) In an log(Be/H) vs [alpha/Fe] diagram, the halo stars separate into two components; one is consistent with predictions of evolutionary models, while the other has too high alpha and Be abundances and is chemically indistinguishable from thick disk stars. This suggests that the halo is not a single uniform population where a clear age-metallicity relation can be defined. 3) In diagrams of Rmin vs [alpha/Fe] and log(Be/H) the thick disk stars show a possible decrease of [alpha/Fe] with Rmin, whereas no dependence of Be with Rmin is seen. This anticorrelation suggests that the star formation rate was lower in the outer regions of the thick disc, pointing towards an inside-out formation. The lack of correlation for Be indicates that it is insensitive to the local conditions of star formation.

N in turn-off stars of NGC 6397 and NGC 6752

We measure the nitrogen abundance in 5 Turn Off(TO) stars of the Globular Clusters NGC 6397 and NGC 6752, and compare the cluster abundances with those of field stars of comparable metallicity. We determine the nitrogen abundance from the band head system at 3360 Å, using spectra of resolution R=45000 obtained with the UVES spectrograph on the VLT. We apply the same method previously used on field stars, to allow a direct comparison of the results. Nitrogen is found to have the same abundance in two of the NGC 6397 stars, in spite of a difference of one order of magnitude in oxygen abundance between them. In a third star of NGC 6397 the value is slightly lower, but compatible with the other two, within the uncertainties. All the stars in NGC 6397 are N-rich with respect to field objects of similar metallicity. The two stars in NGC 6752 show a difference in nitrogen abundance by over one order of magnitude. The same stars differ in the abundances of other elements such as Na, O and Li, only by a factor 3-4. The behaviour of N is different in the two clusters: no variation is observed NGC 6397, while a large variation is observed in NGC 6752. This is consistent with a picture in which the stars in NGC 6752 have been formed by a mixture of ``pristine'' material and material which has been processed by an early generation of stars, referred to as ``polluters''. The N abundances here reported will help to constrain the properties of the polluters. In the case of NGC 6397 a simple pollution history is probably not viable, since the observed variations in O abundances are not accompanied by corresponding variations in N or Li.

A study of the magnetic helium variable emission-line star HD 125823

The 5.9 M_sun star HD 125823 is a striking helium variable with a period of 8.82 d, ranging in helium spectral type from He-strong B2 to He-weak B8. For the first time we present here observational evidence for the appearance of emission lines of Mn and Fe in a variable magnetic star.

Heavy Calcium in CP Stars

Large wavelength shifts of infrared triplet lines of Ca II have been observed in the spectra of HgMn and magnetic Ap stars. They have been attributed to the heavy calcium isotopes, including Ca-48. One member of the triplet, $λ$8542, had been either unavailable, or of poor quality in earlier spectra. The present material shows conclusively that the stellar $λ$8542 shifts are consistent with an interpretation in terms of Ca-48. We find no relation between isotopic shifts of the Ca II triplet lines, and those of Hg II $λ$3984. There is a marginal indication that the shifts are {\it anticorrelated} with the surface field strengths of the magnetic stars. We see sparse evidence for Ca-48 in other chemically peculiar stars, e.g. Am's, metal-poor stars, or chemically peculiar red giants. However, the sample is still very small, and the wavelengths of all three triplet lines, including those in the Sun, show slight positive shifts with respect to terrestrial positions. Some profiles of the Ca II infrared triplet in the magnetic stars show extensive wings beyond a well-defined core. We can obtain reasonable fits to these profiles using a stratified calcium abundance similar to that used by previous workers. There is no indication that either the stratification or the Zeeman effect significantly disturbs the measurement of isotope shifts.

Beryllium abundance in turn-off stars of NGC 6752

Aims: To measure the beryllium abundance in two TO stars of the Globular Cluster NGC 6752, one oxygen rich and sodium poor, the other presumably oxygen poor and sodium rich. Be abundances in these stars are used to put on firmer grounds the hypothesis of Be as cosmochronometer and to investigate the formation of Globular Clusters. Method:We present near UV spectra with resolution R$\sim 45000$ obtained with the UVES spectrograph on the 8.2m VLT Kueyen telescope, analysed with spectrum synthesis based on plane parallel LTE model atmospheres. Results:Be is detected in the O rich star with log(Be/H)=-12.04 $\pm$0.15, while Be is not detected in the other star for which we obtain the upper limit log(Be/H)$<$-12.2. A large difference in nitrogen abundance (1.6 dex) is found between the two stars. Conclusions:The Be measurement is compatible with what found in field stars with the same [Fe/H] and [O/H]. The 'Be age' of the cluster is found to be 13.3 Gyrs, in excellent agreement with the results from main sequence fitting and stellar evolution. The presence of Be confirms the results previously obtained for the cluster NGC 6397 and supports the hypothesis that Be can be used as a clock for the early formation of the Galaxy. Since only an upper limit is found for the star with low oxygen abundance, we cannot decide between competing scenarios of Globular Cluster formation, but we can exclude that 'polluted' stars are substantially younger than 'unpolluted' ones. We stress that the Be test might be the only measurement capable of distinguishing between these scenarios.

Tests of stellar model atmospheres by optical interferometry IV: VINCI interferometry and UVES spectroscopy of Menkar

We present K-band interferometric and optical spectroscopic observations of Menkar obtained with the instruments VINCI and UVES at Paranal Observatory. Spherically symmetric PHOENIX stellar model atmospheres are constrained by comparison to our interferometric and spectroscopic data, and high-precision fundamental parameters of Menkar are obtained. Our high-precision VLTI/VINCI observations in the first and second lobes of the visibility function directly probe the model-predicted strength of the limb darkening effect in the K-band and the stellar angular diameter. The high spectral resolution of UVES allows us to confront observed and model-predicted profiles of atomic lines and molecular bands. We show that our derived PHOENIX model atmosphere for Menkar is consistent with both the measured strength of the limb-darkening in the near-infrared K-band and the profiles of spectral bands around selected atomic lines and TiO bandheads. At the detailed level of our high spectral resolution, however, noticeable discrepancies between observed and synthetic spectra exist. We obtain a Rosseland angular diameter of Theta_Ross=12.20 mas pm 0.04 mas. Together with the Hipparcos parallax, it corresponds to R_Ross=89 pm 5 R_sun, and together with the bolometric flux to T_eff=3795 K pm 70 K.Our approach illustrates the power of combining interferometry and high-resolution spectroscopy to constrain and calibrate stellar model atmospheres. The simultaneous agreement of the model atmosphere with our interferometric and spectroscopic data increases confidence in the reliability of the modelling of this star, while discrepancies at the detailed level of the high resolution spectra can be used to further improve the underlying model.

Inhomogeneous surface distribution of chemical elements in the eclipsing binary AR Aur: A new challenge for our understanding of HgMn stars

We present the results of a high spectral resolution study of the eclipsing binary AR Aur. AR Aur is the only known eclipsing binary with a HgMn primary star exactly on the ZAMS and a secondary star still contracting towards the ZAMS. We detect for the first time in the spectra of the primary star that for many elements the line profiles are variable over the rotation period. The strongest profile variations are found for the elements Pt, Hg, Sr, Y, Zr, He and Nd, while the line profiles of O, Na, Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, and Fe show only weak distortions over the rotation period. The slight variability of He and Y is also confirmed by the study of high resolution spectra of another HgMn star: alpha And. A preliminary modelling of the inhomogeneous distribution has been carried out for Sr and Y. Our analysis shows that these elements are very likely concentrated in a fractured ring along the rotational equator. It may be an essential clue for the explanation of the origin of the chemical anomalies in HgMn stars (which are very frequently found in binary and multiple systems) that one large fraction of the ring is missing exactly on the surface area which is permanently facing the secondary, and another small one on the almost opposite side. The results presented about the inhomogeneous distribution of various chemical elements over the stellar surface of the primary suggest new directions for investigations to solve the question of the origin of abundance anomalies in B-type stars with HgMn peculiarity.
