Propagating left/right asymmetry in the zebrafish embryo: one-dimensional model

During embryonic development in vertebrates, left-right (L/R) asymmetry is reliably generated by a conserved mechanism: a L/R asymmetric signal is transmitted from the embryonic node to other parts of the embryo by the L/R asymmetric expression and diffusion of the TGF-$β$ related proteins Nodal and Lefty via propagating gene expression fronts in the lateral plate mesoderm (LPM) and midline. In zebrafish embryos, Nodal and Lefty expression can only occur along 3 narrow stripes that express the co-receptor \emph{one-eyed pinhead} (oep): Nodal along stripes in the left and right LPM, and Lefty along the midline. In wild-type embryos, Nodal is only expressed in the left LPM but not the right, because of inhibition by Lefty from the midline; however, bilateral Nodal expression occurs in loss-of-handedness mutants. A two-dimensional model of the zebrafish embryo predicts this loss of L/R asymmetry in oep mutants \cite{henley-xu-burdine}. In this paper, we simplify this two-dimensional picture to a one-dimensional model of Nodal and Lefty front propagation along the oep-expressing stripes. We represent Nodal and Lefty production by step functions that turn on when a linear function of Nodal and Lefty densities crosses a threshold. We do a parameter exploration of front propagation behavior, and find the existence of \emph{pinned} intervals, along which the linear function underlying production is pinned to the threshold. Finally, we find parameter regimes for which spatially uniform oscillating solutions are possible.

Abnormal magnetoresistance behavior in Nb thin film with rectangular antidot lattice

Abnormal magnetoresistance behavior is found in superconducting Nb films perforated with rectangular arrays of antidots (holes). Generally magnetoresistance were always found to increase with increasing magnetic field. Here we observed a reversal of this behavior for particular in low temperature or current density. This phenomenon is due to a strong 'caging effect' which interstitial vortices are strongly trapped among pinned multivortices.

Doping evolution of the optical scattering rate and effective mass of Bi(2)Sr(2-x)La(x)CuO(6)

We determined the optical conductivity of Bi(2)Sr(2-x)La(x)CuO(6) at dopings covering the phase diagram from the underdoped to the overdoped regimes. The frequency dependent scattering rate shows a pseudogap extending into the overdoped regime. We found that the effective mass enhancement calculated from the optical conductivity is constant throughout the phase diagram. Conversely, the effective optical charge density varies almost linearly with doping. Our results suggest that the low frequency electrodynamics of Bi(2)Sr(2-x)La(x)CuO(6) is not strongly affected by the long range Mott transition.

Long-term monitoring of the TeV emission from Mrk 421 with the ARGO-YBJ experiment

ARGO-YBJ is an air shower detector array with a fully covered layer of resistive plate chambers. It is operated with a high duty cycle and a large field of view. It continuously monitors the northern sky at energies above 0.3 TeV. In this paper, we report a long-term monitoring of Mrk 421 over the period from 2007 November to 2010 February. This source was observed by the satellite-borne experiments Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer and Swift in the X-ray band. Mrk 421 was especially active in the first half of 2008. Many flares are observed in both X-ray and gamma-ray bands simultaneously. The gamma-ray flux observed by ARGO-YBJ has a clear correlation with the X-ray flux. No lag between the X-ray and gamma-ray photons longer than 1 day is found. The evolution of the spectral energy distribution is investigated by measuring spectral indices at four different flux levels. Hardening of the spectra is observed in both X-ray and gamma-ray bands. The gamma-ray flux increases quadratically with the simultaneously measured X-ray flux. All these observational results strongly favor the synchrotron self-Compton process as the underlying radiative mechanism.

Mean Interplanetary Magnetic Field Measurement Using the ARGO-YBJ Experiment

The sun blocks cosmic ray particles from outside the solar system, forming a detectable shadow in the sky map of cosmic rays detected by the ARGO-YBJ experiment in Tibet. Because the cosmic ray particles are positive charged, the magnetic field between the sun and the earth deflects them from straight trajectories and results in a shift of the shadow from the true location of the sun. Here we show that the shift measures the intensity of the field which is transported by the solar wind from the sun to the earth.

Superconductivity in iron telluride thin films under tensile stress

By realizing in thin films a tensile stress state, superconductivity of 13 K was introduced into FeTe, an non-superconducting parent compound of the iron pnictides and chalcogenides, with transition temperature higher than that of its superconducting isostructural counterpart FeSe. For these tensile stressed films, the superconductivity is accompanied by the softening of the first-order magnetic and structural phase transition; and also, the in-plane extension and out-of-plane contraction are universal in all FeTe films independent of sign of lattice mismatch, either positive or negative. Moreover, the correlations were found exist between the transition temperatures and the tetrahedra bond angles in these thin films.

Self-assembly of liquid crystal block copolymer PEG-b-smectic polymer in pure state and in dilute aqueous solution

A series of amphiphilic LC block copolymers, in which the hydrophobic block is a smectic polymer poly(4-methoxyphenyl 4-(6-acryloyloxy-hexyloxy)-benzoate) (PA6ester1) and the hydrophilic block is polyethyleneglycol (PEG), were synthesized and characterized. The self-assembly of one of them in both the pure state and the dilute aqueous solution was investigated in detail. Nano-structures in the pure state were studied by SAXS and WAXS on samples aligned by a magnetic field. A hexagonal cylindrical micro-segregation phase was observed with a lattice distance of 11.2 nm. The PEG blocks are in the cylinder, while the smectic polymer blocks form a matrix with layer spacing 2.4 nm and layer normal parallel to the long axis of the cylinders. Faceted unilamellar polymer vesicles, polymersomes, were formed in water, as revealed by cryo-TEM. In the lyotropic bilayer membrane of these polymersomes, the thermotropic smectic order in the hydrophobic block is clearly visible with layer normal parallel to the membrane surface.

Preparation and superconductivity of iron selenide thin films

FeSex (x = 0.80, 0.84, 0.88, 0.92) thin films were prepared on SrTiO3(001) (STO), (La,Sr)(Al,Ta)O3(001) (LSAT), and LaAlO3(001) (LAO) substrates by pulsed laser deposition method. All thin films show single-phase and c-axis oriented epitaxial growth, and are superconducting. Among them, the FeSe0.88 thin films show Tc, onset of 11.8 K and Tc, 0 of 3.4 K. The upper critical magnetic field is estimated to be 14.0 T.

Formation and Size-Dependence of Vortex Shells in Mesoscopic Superconducting Niobium Disks

Recent experiments [I.V. Grigorieva et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 077005 (2006)] on visualization of vortices using the Bitter decoration technique revealed vortex shells in mesoscopic superconducting Nb disks containing up to L=40 vortices. Some of the found configurations did not agree with those predicted theoretically. We show here that this discrepancy can be traced back to the larger disks with radii R ~ 1 to 2.5μm, i.e., R ~ 50-100ξ(0) used in the experiment, while in previous theoretical studies vortex states with vorticity L < 40 were analyzed for smaller disks with R ~ 5-20ξ(0). The present analysis is done for thin disks (mesoscopic regime) and for thick (macroscopic) disks where the London screening is taken into account. We found that the radius of the superconducting disk has a pronounced influence on the vortex configuration in contrast to, e.g., the case of parabolic confined charged particles. The missing vortex configurations and the region of their stability are found, which are in agreement with those observed in the experiment.

Ferroelectric switched all-metallic-oxide $p$-$n$ junctions

We report the first formation of the metallic $p$-$n$ junctions, the ferroelectric (Ba,Sr)TiO$_3$ (BST) switched optimally electron-doped ($n$-type) metallic T'-phase superconductor, (La,Ce)$_2$CuO$_4$ (LCCO), and hole-doped ($p$-type) metallic CMR manganite (La,Sr)MnO$_3$ (LSMO) junctions. In contrast with the previous semiconductor $p$-$n$ ($p$-$I$-$n$) junctions which are switched by the built-in field $V_0$, the present metallic oxides $p$-$I$-$n$ junctions are switched by double barrier fields, the built-in field $V_0$, and the ferroelectric reversed polarized field $V_{rp}$, both take together to lead the junctions to possess definite parameters, such as definite negligible reversed current ($10^{-9}$ A), large breakdown voltage ($>$7 V), and ultrahigh rectification ($>2\times10^4$) in the bias voltage 1.2 V to 2.0 V and temperature range from 5 to over 300 K. The related transport feature, barrier size effect, and temperature effect are also observed and defined.

Coexistence of Superconductivity and Ferromagnetism in Dilute Co-doped $La_{1.89} Ce_{0.11} Cu O_{4\pm\d}$ System

Thin films of the optimally electron-doped $T'$-phase superconductor La$_{1.89}$Ce$_{0.11}$CuO$_{4\pm \d}$ are investigated by dilute Co doping, formed as La$_{1.89}$Ce$_{0.11}$(Cu$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)O$_{4\pm\d}$ (LCCCO) with $x$ = 0.01 -- 0.05. The following results are obtained for the first time: for the whole dilute Co doping range, LCCCO thin films show long-range ferromagnetic ordering at the temperature range from 5 K to 300 K, which is likely due to the RKKY interaction; in the very dilute Co doping, $x$ = 0.01 and 0.02, the superconductivity is maitained, the system shows the coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism in the CuO$_{2}$ plane. This may be based on the nature of the charge carriers in electron-doped high-$T_{c}$ cuprate superconductors.
