Single Crystal Diffuse Neutron Scattering Study of the Dipole-Octupole Quantum Spin Ice Candidate Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$: No Apparent Octupolar Correlations Above $T = 0.05$ K

The insulating magnetic pyrochlore Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ has gained attention as a quantum spin ice candidate with dipole-octupole character arising from the crystal electric field ground state doublet for the Ce$^{3+}$ ion. This permits both spin ice phases based on magnetic dipoles and those based on more-exotic octupoles. We report low-temperature neutron diffraction measurements on single crystal Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ with $Q$-coverage both at low $Q$ where the magnetic form factor for dipoles is near maximal and at high $Q$ where the magnetic form factor for Ce$^{3+}$ octupoles is near maximal. This study was motivated by recent powder neutron diffraction studies of other Ce-based dipole-octupole pyrochlores, Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ and Ce$_2$Hf$_2$O$_7$, which each showed temperature-dependent diffuse diffraction at high $Q$ that was interpreted as arising from octupolar correlations. Our measurements use an optimized single crystal diffuse scattering instrument that allows us to screen against strong Bragg scattering from Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$. The temperature-difference neutron diffraction reveals a low-$Q$ peak consistent with dipolar spin ice correlations reported in previous work, and an alternation between positive and negative net intensity at higher $Q$. These features are consistent with our numerical-linked-cluster calculations using pseudospin interaction parameters previously reported for Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$, Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$, and Ce$_2$Hf$_2$O$_7$. Importantly, neither the measured data nor any of the NLC calculations show evidence for increased scattering at high $Q$ resulting from octupolar correlations. We conclude that at the lowest attainable temperature for our measurements ($T = 0.05$ K), scattering from octupolar correlations in Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ is not present in the neutron diffraction signal on the level of our observation threshold of ~ 0.1 % of the low-$Q$ dipole scattering.

Giant resonant enhancement for photo-induced superconductivity in K$_3$C$_{60}$

Photo-excitation at terahertz and mid-infrared frequencies has emerged as a new way to manipulate functionalities in quantum materials, in some cases creating non-equilibrium phases that have no equilibrium analogue. In K$_3$C$_{60}$, a metastable zero-resistance phase was documented with optical properties and pressure dependences compatible with non-equilibrium high temperature superconductivity. Here, we report the discovery of a dominant energy scale for this phenomenon, along with the demonstration of a giant increase in photo-susceptibility near 10 THz excitation frequency. At these drive frequencies a metastable superconducting-like phase is observed up to room temperature for fluences as low as ~400 $μJ/cm^2$. These findings shed light on the microscopic mechanism underlying photo-induced superconductivity. They also trace a path towards steady state operation, currently limited by the availability of a suitable high-repetition rate optical source at these frequencies.

Using Machine Learning to Discern Eruption in Noisy Environments: A Case Study using CO2-driven Cold-Water Geyser in Chimayo, New Mexico

We present an approach based on machine learning (ML) to distinguish eruption and precursory signals of Chimayó geyser (New Mexico, USA) under noisy environments. This geyser can be considered as a natural analog of $\mathrm{CO}_2$ intrusion into shallow water aquifers. By studying this geyser, we can understand upwelling of $\mathrm{CO}_2$-rich fluids from depth, which has relevance to leak monitoring in a $\mathrm{CO}_2$ sequestration project. ML methods such as Random Forests (RF) are known to be robust multi-class classifiers and perform well under unfavorable noisy conditions. However, the extent of the RF method's accuracy is poorly understood for this $\mathrm{CO}_2$-driven geysering application. The current study aims to quantify the performance of RF-classifiers to discern the geyser state. Towards this goal, we first present the data collected from the seismometer that is installed near the Chimayó geyser. The seismic signals collected at this site contain different types of noises such as daily temperature variations, seasonal trends, animal movement near the geyser, and human activity. First, we filter the signals from these noises by combining the Butterworth-Highpass filter and an Autoregressive method in a multi-level fashion. We show that by combining these filtering techniques, in a hierarchical fashion, leads to reduction in the noise in the seismic data without removing the precursors and eruption event signals. We then use RF on the filtered data to classify the state of geyser into three classes -- remnant noise, precursor, and eruption states. We show that the classification accuracy using RF on the filtered data is greater than 90\%.These aspects make the proposed ML framework attractive for event discrimination and signal enhancement under noisy conditions, with strong potential for application to monitoring leaks in $\mathrm{CO}_2$ sequestration.

Development of a New Gas Puff Imaging Diagnostic on the HL-2A Tokamak

A new gas puff imaging (GPI) diagnostic has been developed on the HL-2A tokamak to study two-dimensional plasma edge turbulence in poloidal vs. radial plane. During a discharge, neutral helium or deuterium gas is puffed at the edge of the plasma through a rectangular multi-capillary nozzle to generate a gas cloud on the observing plane. Then a specially designed telescope and a high-speed camera are used to observe and photograph the emission from the neutral gas cloud. The brightness and contrast in the 2-D poloidal vs. radial frames reveal the structures and movements of the turbulence. The diagnostic was put into the first experiment during the latest campaign and successfully captured blob structures of different shapes and sizes in scrape-off layer (SOL).

Edge Shear Flows and Particle Transport near the Density Limit in the HL-2A Tokamak

Edge shear flow and its effect on regulating turbulent transport have long been suspected to play an important role in plasmas operating near the Greenwald density limit $ n_G $. In this study, equilibrium profiles as well as the turbulent particle flux and Reynolds stress across the separatrix in the HL-2A tokamak are examined as $ n_G $ is approached in ohmic L-mode discharges. As the normalized line-averaged density $ \bar{n}_e/n_G $ is raised, the shearing rate of the mean poloidal flow $ ω_{\rm sh} $ drops, and the turbulent drive for the low-frequency zonal flow (the Reynolds power $ \mathcal{P}_{Re} $) collapses. Correspondingly, the turbulent particle transport increases drastically with increasing collision rates. The geodesic acoustic modes (GAMs) gain more energy from the ambient turbulence at higher densities, but have smaller shearing rate than low-frequency zonal flows. The increased density also introduces decreased adiabaticity which not only enhances the particle transport but is also related to a reduction in the eddy-tilting and the Reynolds power. Both effects may lead to the cooling of edge plasmas and therefore the onset of MHD instabilities that limit the plasma density.

Disorder suppressed charge-density-wave and its origin in 1T-TaSe2-xTex

In the sake of connecting the charge-density-wave (CDW) of TaSe$_2$ and single-\emph{\textbf{q}} CDW-type distortion of TaTe$_2$, we present an overall electronic phase diagram of 1\emph{T}-TaSe$_{2-x}$Te$_x$ ($0 \leq x \leq 2$). In the experimentally prepared single crystals, the CDW is completely suppressed as $0.5 < x < 1.5$, while superconductivity emerges as $0.2 < x < 1.2$. Theoretically, similar to 1\emph{T}-TaSe$_2$ and 1\emph{T}-TaTe$_2$, the hypothetic 1\emph{T}-TaSeTe with ordered Se/Ta/Te stacking shows instability in the phonon dispersion, indicating the presence of CDW in the ideally ordered sample. The contradictory between experimental and theoretical results suggests that the CDW is suppressed by disorder in 1\emph{T}-TaSe$_{2-x}$Te$_x$. The formation and suppression of CDW are found to be independent with Fermi surface nesting based on the generated electron susceptibility calculations. The calculation of phonon linewidth suggests the strong \textbf{\emph{q}}-dependent electron-phonon coupling induced period-lattice-distortion (PLD) should be related to our observation: The doping can largely distort the TaX$_6$ (X = Se, Te) octahedra, which are disorderly distributed. The resulted puckered Ta-Ta layers are not compatible with the two-dimensional PLD. Therefore, CDW is suppressed in 1\emph{T}-TaSe$_{2-x}$Te$_x$. Our results offer an indirect evidence that PLD, which can be influenced by strong disorder, is the origin of CDW in the system.

CuSe-based layered compound Bi$_{2}$YO$_{4}$Cu$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ as a quasi-two-dimensional metal

We have investigated the physical properties of a new layered oxyselenide Bi$_{2}$YO$_{4}$Cu$_{2}$Se$_{2}$, which crystallizes in an unusual intergrowth structure with Cu$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ and Bi$_{2}$YO$_{4}$ layers. Electric transport measurement indicates that Bi$_{2}$YO$_{4}$Cu$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ behaves metallic. Thermal transport and Hall measurements show that the type of the carriers is hole-like and it may be a potential thermoelectric material at high temperatures. First principle calculations are in agreement with experimental results and show that Bi$_{2}$YO$_{4}$Cu$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ is a quasi-2D metal. Further theoretical investigation suggests the ground states of the Bi$_{2}$YO$_{4}$Cu$_{2}$Se$_{2}$-type can be tuned by designing the blocking layers, which will enrich the physical properties of these compounds.
