Prompt Contributions to the Dilepton Yield in Heavy Ion Collisions

The mass spectrum is calculated for those dileptons which are produced in the early phase of a heavy ion collisions via the direct production NN -> (l^+)(l^-)X and via the Compton process GN -> (l^+)(l^-)X with prompt gluons radiated in preceding NN interactions. Both mechanisms produce a mass spectrum which decreases steeply with invariant mass of the l^+l^- pair and which is below the CERES data for Pb-Au collisions by about one order of magnitude.

J/Psi and Psi' total cross sections and formation times from data for charmonium suppression in $pA$ collisions

The recent data for E866 experiment on the x_F dependence for charmonium suppression in pA collisions at 800 GeV are analyzed using a time- and energy-dependent preformed charmonium absorption cross section σ_{abs}^ψ(τ,\sqrt{s}). For \sqrt{s}=10 GeV the initially (τ=0) produced premeson has an absorption cross section of σ_{pr}~3mb. At the same energy but for τ-> \infty one deduces for the total cross sections σ_{tot}^{J/Psi N}=(2.8\pm 0.3)mb, σ_{tot}^{J/Psi N}= (10.5\pm 3.6)mb. The date are compatible with a formation time τ_{1/2}=0.6 fm/c.

Charmonium suppression by gluon bremsstrahlung in p-A and A-B collisions

Prompt gluons are an additional source for charmonium suppression in nuclear collisions, in particular for nucleus-nucleus collisions. These gluons are radiated as bremsstrahlung in N-N collisions and interact inelastically with the charmonium states while the nuclei still overlap. The spectra and mean number of the prompt gluons are calculated perturbatively and the gluon-Psi inelastic cross section is estimated. The integrated cross sections for AB --> J/Psi (Psi')X for p-A and A-B collisions and the dependence on transverse energy for S-U and Pb-Pb can be described quantitatively with some adjustment of one parameter σ(gPsi).

The spin dependence of high energy proton scattering

Motivated by the need for an absolute polarimeter to determine the beam polarization for the forthcoming RHIC spin program, we study the spin dependence of the proton-proton elastic scattering amplitudes at high energy and small momentum transfer. We examine experimental evidence for the existence of an asymptotic part of the helicity-flip amplitude phi_5 which is not negligible relative to the largely imaginary average non-flip amplitude phi_+. We discuss theoretical estimates of r_5, essentially the ratio of phi_5 to phi_+, based upon extrapolation of low and medium energy Regge phenomenological results to high energies, models based on a hybrid of perturbative QCD and non-relativistic quark models, and models based on eikonalization techniques. We also apply the model-independent methods of analyticity and unitarity. The preponderence of evidence at available energy indicates that r_5 is small, probably less than 10%. The best available experimental limit comes from Fermilab E704:those data indicate that |r_5|<15%. These bounds are important because rigorous methods allow much larger values. In contradiction to a widely-held prejudice that r_5 decreases with energy, general principles allow it to grow as fast as ln(s) asymptotically, and some models show an even faster growth in the RHIC range. One needs a more precise measurement of r_5 or to bound it to be smaller than 5% in order to use the classical Coulomb-nuclear interference technique for RHIC polarimetry. As part of this study, we demonstrate the surprising result that proton-proton elastic scattering is self-analysing, in the sense that all the helicity amplitudes can, in principle, be determined experimentally at small momentum transfer without a knowledge of the magnitude of the beam and target polarization.

Bremsstrahlung of a Quark Propagating through a Nucleus

The density of gluons produced in the central rapidity region of a heavy ion collision is poorly known. We investigate the influence of the effects of quantum coherence on the transverse momentum distribution of photons and gluons radiated by a quark propagating through nuclear matter. We describe the case that the radiation time substantially exceeds the nuclear radius (the relevant case for RHIC and LHC energies), which is different from what is known as Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect corresponding to an infinite medium. We find suppression of the radiation spectrum at small transverse photon/gluon momentum k_T, but enhancement for k_T>1GeV. Any nuclear effects vanish for k_T > 10GeV. Our results allow also to calculate the k_T dependent nuclear effects in prompt photon, light and heavy (Drell-Yan) dilepton and hadron production.

Baryon Stopping at HERA: Evidence for Gluonic Mechanism

Recent results from the H1 experiment [1] have confirmed the existence of a substantial baryon asymmetry of the proton sea at small $x$ with magnitude predicted in hep-ph/9607486. This is a strong support for the idea [3] that baryon number can be transferred by gluons through a large rapidity interval without attenuation. In this paper we calculate the dependence of baryon asymmetry on associated multiplicity of produced hadrons which turns out to be very sensitive to the underlying dynamics. Comparison with data [1] confirms the dominance of the gluonic mechanism of baryon number transfer and excludes any substantial contribution of valence quark exchange.

Diffractive Production of Drell-Yan pairs and Heavy Flavors

Partonic interpretation of high-energy reactions is known to depend on a reference frame. Particularly, in the rest frame of the target Drell-Yan process looks like freeing of the projectile lepton-antilepton fluctuation, rather than q+qbar -> l+lbar annihilation. The light-cone representation for Drell-Yan reaction is very similar to that in DIS and exposes a substantial contamination of soft interactions, which turn out to be dominant in diffractive production of lepton pairs and in nuclear shadowing. We estimate the fraction of diffractive events in the total Drell-Yan cross section, which scales in M^2, and find a substantial deviation from factorization. An analogous approach is developed for diffractive production of heavy flavors.

Charmonium Suppression in Heavy Ion Collisions by Prompt Gluons

In relativistic heavy ion collisions, also the bremsstrahlung of gluons in the fragmentation regions of the nuclei suppresses the produced charmonium states. In the energy range of the SPS, the radiation of semi-hard gluons occurs in the Bethe-Heitler regime and the density of gluons and therefore the suppression goes like $(AB)^{1\over3}$, where $A$ and $B$ are the nucleon numbers of the projectile and target nuclei. In contrast, the suppression via collisions with nucleons is proportional to $(A^{1\over3} + B^{1\over3})$. Parameter free perturbative QCD calculations are in a good agreement with the data on $J/Ψ$ and $Ψ'$ suppression in heavy ion collisions at SPS CERN. At higher energies (RHIC, LHC) the number of gluons which are able to break-up the charmonium substantially decreases and the additional suppression is expected to vanish.

Energy Dependence of the Pomeron Spin-Flip

There is no theoretical reason to think that the spin-flip component of the Pomeron is zero. One can measure the spin-flip part using Coulomb-nuclear interference (CNI). Perturbative QCD calculations show that the spin-flip component is sensitive to the smallest quark separation in the proton, while the non-flip part probes the largest separation. According to HERA results on the proton structure function at very low x the energy dependence of the cross-section correlates with the size of the color dipole. Analysing the data from HERA we predict that the ratio of the spin-flip to non-flip amplitude grows with energy as $r(s)\propto (1/x)^{0.1-0.2}$, violating Regge factorisation of the Pomeron.

Challenges of Nuclear Shadowing in DIS

Nuclear shadowing in DIS at moderately small $x$ is suppressed by the nuclear formfactor and depends on the effective mass of a hadronic fluctuation of the virtual photon. We propose a solution to the problems (i) of how to combine a definite transverse size of the fluctuation with a definite effective mass, and (ii) of how to include the nuclear formfactor in the higher multiple scattering terms. Comparison of the numerical results with known approximations shows a substantial difference.

Highlights of the Theory

The highlights of the Working Group 5B, Theory, are summarised. There has been reported impressive progresses in the study of BFKL Pomeron and Odderon dynamics. It turns out that the leading log approximation is not still a good one in the energy range of HERA and one should take care of next to leading corrections.

J/ΨN and Psi' N total cross sections from photoproduction data: failure of vector dominance

Values for the cross sections $σ^{ΨN}_{tot}$ and $σ^{Ψ' N}_{tot}$ are of crucial importance, once one wants to understand nuclear suppression of $J/Ψ$($Ψ'$) in a search for the quark gluon plasma. Quoted values are usually extracted from $γN \to J/Ψ(Ψ') N$ data via the vector dominance model (VDM) and are very small compared with expectations from QCD. The validity of QCD is questioned. When the VDM is extended to a multi-channel case, the $γN$ data lead to a value $2.8\pm 0.12 mb <σ_{tot}^{ΨN}(\sqrt{s}= 10 GeV) < 4.1\pm 0.15 mb$, which is a factor 3 larger than the VDM prediction. Errors are due to experimental input, and the corridor shows the theoretical uncertainty. We also derive from the data $σ_{tot}^{Ψ' N}/σ_{tot}^{J/ΨN}\approx 4$, where we could not estimate the theoretical uncertainty.

Unitarity effects in DIS

We argue that diffractive DIS, dominated by soft interactions, is probably the unique process which allows us to observe unitarity effects in DIS. Guided by a close analogy between the diffractive dissociation of a highly virtual photon and the elastic scattering of hadrons we propose a specific procedure to analyse the data in order to detect the onset of the unitarity limit. Lacking appropriate data, we use the predictions of a realistic model as an input for our analysis, to demonstrate that the output unitarity signal is sufficiently large to be detectable.

Dynamics and Phenomenology of Charmonium Production off Nuclei

Nuclear suppression of charmonium production in proton-nucleus interactions is poorly understood, what restrains our attempts to single out unusual effects in heavy ion collisions. We develop a phenomenological approach, based on the light-cone dynamics of charmonium production, which has much in common with deep-inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan lepton pair production. The key observation is the existence of a soft mechanism of heavy flavour production, which scales in the quark mass and dominates shadowing corrections and diffraction. It naturally explains the surprisingly strong nuclear suppression of J/Psi at large Feynman-x_F. The low-x_F region is subject to a complicated interplay of hard and soft mechanisms. With evaluated parameters we nicely describe available data on charmonium production in proton-nucleus collisions. Using these results we predict a new process, diffractive production of charmonium on a nucleon target, which fraction in the total production rate of charmonium is evaluated at 12%.

Electroproduction of vector mesons off nuclei at ELFE: exact solution for color transparency

A multichannel evolution equation is developed for the density matrix describing a hadronic wave packet produced by a virtual photon and propagation through a nuclear matter. This approach is dual to the quark-gluon representation, incorporates the effects of coherence and formation times and gives an exact solution for color transparency problem at any photon energy. We propose a procedure of data analysis, which provides an unambiguous way of detection of a color transparency signal even at medium energies.

Baryon Asymmetry of the Proton Sea at Low $x$

We predict a nonvanishing baryon asymmetry of the proton sea at low $x$. It is expected to be about $7\%$ and nearly $x$-independent at $x < 0.5 \times 10^{-3}$. The asymmetry arises from the baryon-antibaryon component of the Pomeron, rather than from the valence quarks of the proton, which are wide believed carriers of baryon number. Experimental study of $x$-distribution of the baryon asymmetry of the proton sea can be performed in $ep$ or $γp$ interactions at HERA, where $x\sim 10^{-5}$ are reachable, smaller than at any of existing or planned proton colliders.

Towards Study of Color Transparency with Medium Energy Electron Beams

Interference between vector mesons electroproduced at different longitudinal coordinates leads within Glauber approximation to a $Q^2$-dependence of nuclear effects similar to what is expected to be an onset of color transparency (CT). We suggest such a mapping of the photon energies and virtualities, which eliminates the undesirable $Q^2$-variation and allows to measure a net CT effect. We develop a multichannel evolution equation, which for the first time incorporates CT and the effects of the coherence length in the exclusive electroproduction of vector mesons.

Hadronization in Nuclear Environment

We present a space-time description of hadronization of highly virtual quarks originating from a deep-inelastic electron scattering (DIS). Important ingredients of our approach are the time- and energy--dependence of the density of energy loss for gluon radiation, the Sudakov's suppression of no radiation, and the effect of color transparency, which suppresses final state interaction of the produced colorless wave packet. The model is in a good agreement with available data on leading hadron production off nucleons and nuclei. The optimal energy range for study of the hadronization dynamics with nuclear target is found to be a few tens of GeV, particularly energies available in the experiment HERMES.
