Nonlocal Gravity: Modification of Newtonian Gravitational Force in the Solar System

Nonlocal gravity (NLG) is a classical nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation developed in close analogy with the nonlocal electrodynamics of media. It appears that the nonlocal aspect of the universal gravitational interaction could simulate dark matter. Within the Newtonian regime of NLG, we investigate the deviation of the gravitational force from the Newtonian inverse square law as a consequence of the existence of the effective dark matter. In particular, we work out the magnitude of this deviation in the solar system out to 100 astronomical units. Moreover, we give an improved lower limit for the short-range parameter of the reciprocal kernel of NLG.

Static and Dynamic Melvin Universes

We briefly review the known properties of Melvin's magnetic universe and study the propagation of test charged matter waves in this static spacetime. Moreover, the possible correspondence between the wave perturbations on the background Melvin universe and the motion of charged test particles is discussed. Next, we explore a simple scenario for turning Melvin's static universe into one that undergoes gravitational collapse. In the resulting dynamic gravitational field, the formation of cosmic double-jet configurations is emphasized.

Characteristics of Effective Dark Matter in Nonlocal Gravity

Nonlocal gravity (NLG) is a classical nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation that has been constructed in close analogy with the nonlocal electrodynamics of media. According to NLG, what appears as dark matter in astrophysics and cosmology is in reality the nonlocal aspect of the universal gravitational interaction. We focus here on two main features of the effective dark matter in NLG, namely, (a) the density of effective dark matter in NLG is always finite and therefore cusp-free, and (b) there is less effective dark matter in dwarf galaxies than is generally assumed in the standard particle dark matter paradigm. The corresponding astrophysical implications of NLG in connection with three ultra-diffuse galaxies AGC 114905, 242019, and 219533 are discussed.

Gravitomagnetic Helicity

Mass currents in astrophysics generate gravitomagnetic fields of enormous complexity. Gravitomagnetic helicity, in direct analogy with magnetic helicity, is a measure of entwining of the gravitomagnetic field lines. We discuss gravitomagnetic helicity within the gravitoelectromagnetic (GEM) framework of linearized general relativity. Furthermore, we employ the spacetime curvature approach to GEM in order to determine the gravitomagnetic helicity for static observers in Kerr spacetime.

Dynamical Friction and Tidal Interactions

We discuss dynamical friction in an $N$-body system in the presence of tidal interactions caused by a distant external source. Using the distant tide approximation, we develop a perturbation scheme for the calculation of dynamical friction that takes tidal effects into account to linear order. In this initial analytic approach to the problem, we neglect the influence of tides on the distribution function of stars in the background stellar system. Our result for the dynamical friction force in the appropriate limit is in agreement with Chandrasekhar's formula in the absence of tides. We provide preliminary estimates for the tidal contributions to the dynamical friction force. The astrophysical implications of our results are briefly discussed.

Dynamical Friction in Nonlocal Gravity

We study dynamical friction in the Newtonian regime of nonlocal gravity (NLG), which is a classical nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation. The nonlocal aspect of NLG simulates dark matter. The attributes of the resulting effective dark matter are described and the main physical predictions of nonlocal gravity, which has a characteristic lengthscale of order 1 kpc, for galactic dynamics are presented. Within the framework of NLG, we derive the analogue of Chandrasekhar's formula for dynamical friction. The astrophysical implications of the results for the apparent rotation of a central bar subject to dynamical friction in a barred spiral galaxy are briefly discussed.

Gravitomagnetic Stern--Gerlach Force

A heuristic description of the spin-rotation-gravity coupling is presented and the implications of the corresponding gravitomagnetic Stern--Gerlach force are briefly mentioned. It is shown, within the framework of linearized general relativity, that the gravitomagnetic Stern--Gerlach force reduces in the appropriate correspondence limit to the classical Mathisson spin-curvature force.

Relativistic Tidal Accelerations in the Exterior Schwarzschild Spacetime

We study further a general relativistic mechanism for the acquisition of tidal energy by free test particles near a gravitationally collapsed configuration. Specifically, we investigate the solutions of timelike geodesic equation in a Fermi normal coordinate system established about the world line of an accelerated observer that remains spatially at rest in the exterior Schwarzschild spacetime. Such static observers in effect define the rest frame of the collapsed source. The gain in tidal energy is due to local spacetime curvature. Previous work in this direction in connection with astrophysical jets involved geodesic motion along the Kerr rotation axis where outward moving particles could be tidally accelerated to almost the speed of light if their initial speed, as measured by the reference observer, is above a certain threshold escape velocity. We focus here for simplicity on the exterior Schwarzschild spacetime and show that the effective tidal acceleration to near the speed of light can occur for geodesic motion in certain radially outward directions. The implications of these results for the physics of gravitationally collapsed systems are briefly discussed.

Jacobi Fields and Tidal Effects in Kerr Spacetime

General relativistic tidal equations are formulated with respect to the rest frame of a central gravitational source described by the Kerr gravitational field. Specifically, observers that are spatially at rest in the exterior Kerr spacetime are considered in detail; in effect, these fiducial observers define the rest frame of the Kerr source. The generalized Jacobi equation for the free motion of a test particle is worked out within the Fermi coordinate system established along the world line of a fiducial observer at rest on the symmetry axis of the exterior Kerr background. The nature of the solutions of these equations are investigated in connection with the phenomena associated with astrophysical jets.

Spinning Particles in Twisted Gravitational Wave Spacetimes

Twisted gravitational waves (TGWs) are nonplanar waves with twisted rays that move along a fixed direction in space. We study further the physical characteristics of a recent class of Ricci-flat solutions of general relativity representing TGWs with wave fronts that have negative Gaussian curvature. In particular, we investigate the influence of TGWs on the polarization of test electromagnetic waves and on the motion of classical spinning test particles in such radiation fields. To distinguish the polarization effects of twisted waves from plane waves, we examine the theoretical possibility of existence of spin-twist coupling and show that this interaction is generally consistent with our results.

Relativistic Tidal Acceleration of Astrophysical Jets

Within the framework of general relativity, we investigate the tidal acceleration of astrophysical jets relative to the central collapsed configuration ("Kerr source"). We neglect electromagnetic forces throughout. The rest frame of the Kerr source is locally defined via the set of hypothetical static observers in the spacetime exterior to the source. Relative to such a fiducial observer fixed on the rotation axis of the Kerr source, jet particles are tidally accelerated to almost the speed of light if their outflow speed is above a certain threshold, given roughly by one half of the Newtonian escape velocity at the location of the reference observer; otherwise, the particles reach a certain height, reverse direction and fall back toward the gravitational source.

Toward Nonlocal Electrodynamics of Accelerated Systems

We revisit acceleration-induced nonlocal electrodynamics and the phenomenon of photon spin-rotation coupling. The kernel of the theory for the electromagnetic field tensor involves parity violation under the assumption of linearity of the field kernel in the acceleration tensor. However, we show that parity conservation can be maintained by extending the field kernel to include quadratic terms in the acceleration tensor. The field kernel must vanish in the absence of acceleration; otherwise, a general dependence of the kernel on the acceleration tensor cannot be theoretically excluded. The physical implications of the quadratic kernel are briefly discussed.

Critical Tidal Currents in General Relativity

Relativistic tidal equations are formulated with respect to the rest frame of a central gravitational source and their solutions are studied. The existence of certain relativistic critical tidal currents are thereby elucidated. Specifically, observers that are spatially at rest in the exterior Kerr spacetime are considered in detail; in effect, these fiducial observers define the rest frame of the Kerr source. The general tidal equations for the free motion of test particles are worked out with respect to the Kerr background. The analytic solutions of these equations are investigated and the existence of a tidal acceleration mechanism is emphasized.

Quasinormal Modes of Generalized Black Holes: delta-Kerr Spacetime

The nonlinear superposition of the delta-metric and the Kerr metric results in delta-Kerr metric that represents a deformed Kerr black hole with delta = 1 + q, where q > 0 is proportional to the nonrelativistic quadrupole moment of the collapsed configuration. We study this spacetime and determine q_{+} such that for q, 0 < q < q_{+}, the outer spacetime singularity remains a null hypersurface. In this case, delta-Kerr spacetime represents a generalized black hole, namely, an asymptotically flat, stationary and axisymmetric vacuum solution of general relativity for which the outer singularity is a closed null hypersurface. For an approximate variant of delta-Kerr spacetime characterized by mass M, quadrupole parameter q and angular momentum parameter a, where the latter two parameters are treated to first and second orders of approximation, respectively, we analytically determine the quasinormal mode (QNM) frequencies in the ray approach using the light-ring method as well as in the complementary wave approach for massless scalar field perturbations in the a = 0 limit. The QNM frequencies of delta-Kerr spacetime turn out to be nearly the same as those of the rotating Hartle-Thorne spacetime.

Nonlocal Gravitomagnetism

We briefly review the current status of nonlocal gravity (NLG), which is a classical nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation based on a certain analogy with the nonlocal electrodynamics of media. Nonlocal gravity thus involves integro-differential field equations and a causal constitutive kernel that should ultimately be determined from observational data. We consider the stationary gravitational field of an isolated rotating astronomical source in the linear approximation of nonlocal gravity. In this weak-field and slow-motion approximation of NLG, we describe the gravitomagnetic field associated with the rotating source and compare our results with gravitoelectromagnetism (GEM) of the standard general relativity theory. Moreover, we briefly study the energy-momentum content of the GEM field in nonlocal gravity.

Twisted Gravitational Waves in the Presence of a Cosmological Constant

We find exact nonlinear solutions of general relativity that represent twisted gravitational waves (TGWs) in the presence of a cosmological constant. A TGW is a nonplanar wave propagating along a fixed spatial direction with a null Killing wave vector that has a nonzero twist tensor. The solutions all turn out to have wave fronts with negative Gaussian curvature. Among the classes of solutions presented in this paper, we find a unique class of simple conformally flat TGWs that is due to the presence of a negative cosmological constant and therefore represents part of anti-de Sitter spacetime. The properties of this special solution are studied in detail.

Conformal Symmetry, Accelerated Observers and Nonlocality

The acceleration transformations form a 4-parameter Abelian subgroup of the conformal group of Minkowski spacetime. The passive interpretation of acceleration transformations leads to a congruence of uniformly accelerated observers in Minkowski spacetime. The properties of this congruence are studied in order to illustrate the kinematics of accelerated observers in relativistic physics. The generalization of this approach under conformal rescaling of the spacetime metric is examined.

General Relativistic Gravity Gradiometry

Gravity gradiometry within the framework of the general theory of relativity involves the measurement of the elements of the relativistic tidal matrix, which is theoretically obtained via the projection of the spacetime curvature tensor upon the nonrotating orthonormal tetrad frame of a geodesic observer. The behavior of the measured components of the curvature tensor under Lorentz boosts is briefly described in connection with the existence of certain special tidal directions. Relativistic gravity gradiometry in the exterior gravitational field of a rotating mass is discussed and a gravitomagnetic beat effect along an inclined spherical geodesic orbit is elucidated.
