Topological Hopf algebras and their Hopf-cyclic cohomology

A natural extension of the Hopf-cyclic cohomology, with coefficients, is introduced to encompass topological Hopf algebras. The topological theory allows to work with infinite dimensional Lie algebras. Furthermore, the category of coefficients (AYD modules) over a topological Lie algebra and those over its universal enveloping (Hopf) algebra are isomorphic. For topological Hopf algebras, the category of coefficients is identified with the representation category of a topological algebra called the anti-Drinfeld double. Finally, a topological van Est type isomorphism is detailed, connecting the Hopf-cyclic cohomology to the relative Lie algebra cohomology with respect to a maximal compact subalgebra.

Hopf algebra $\mathcal{K}_n$ and universal Chern classes

We construct a variant $\mathcal{K}_n$ of the Hopf algebra $\mathcal{H}_n$, which acts directly on the noncommutative model for the generic space of leaves rather than on its frame bundle. We prove that the Hopf cyclic cohomology of $\mathcal{K}_n$ is isomorphic to that of the pair $(\mathcal{H}_n, {\mathop{\rm GL}_n})$ and thus consists of the universal Hopf cyclic classes. We then realize these classes in terms of geometric cocycles.

Generalized Coefficients for Hopf Cyclic Cohomology

A category of coefficients for Hopf cyclic cohomology is defined. It is shown that this category has two proper subcategories of which the smallest one is the known category of stable anti Yetter-Drinfeld modules. The middle subcategory is comprised of those coefficients which satisfy a generalized SAYD condition depending on both the Hopf algebra and the (co)algebra in question. Some examples are introduced to show that these three categories are different. It is shown that all components of Hopf cyclic cohomology work well with the new coefficients we have defined.

Characteristic classes of foliations via SAYD-twisted cocycles

We have previously shown that the truncated Weil algebra of any Lie algebra is a Hopf-cyclic type complex with nontrivial coefficients. In this paper we apply this result to transfer the characteristic classes of transversely orientable foliations into the cyclic cohomology of the groupoid action algebra. Our result in codimension 1 matches with the only existing explicit computation done by Connes-Moscovici. In codimension 2 case, we carry out a constructive and explicit computation, by which we present the transverse fundamental class, the Godbillon-Vey class, and the other four residual classes as cyclic cocycles on the groupoid action algebra. The main object in charge in this new characteristic map is a SAYD-twisted cyclic cocycle of the same degree as the codimension. We construct such a cocycle by introducing an equivariant Hopf-cyclic cohomology and an equivariant cup product.

Hopf cyclic cohomology and transverse characteristic classes

We refine the cyclic cohomological apparatus for computing the Hopf cyclic cohomology of the Hopf algebras associated to infinite primitive Cartan-Lie pseudogroups, and for the transfer of their characteristic classes to foliations. The main novel feature is the precise identification as a Hopf cyclic complex of the image of the canonical homomorphism from the Gelfand-Fuks complex to the Bott complex for equivariant cohomology. This provides a convenient new model for the Hopf cyclic cohomology of the geometric Hopf algebras, which allows for an efficient transport of the Hopf cyclic classes via characteristic homomorphisms. We illustrate the latter aspect by indicating how to realize the universal Hopf cyclic Chern classes in terms of explicit cocycles in the cyclic cohomology of foliation groupoids.

Lie-Hopf algebras and their Hopf cyclic cohomology

The correspondence between Lie algebras, Lie groups, and algebraic groups, on one side and commutative Hopf algebras on the other side are known for a long time by works of Hochschild-Mostow and others. We extend this correspondence by associating a noncommutative noncocommutative Hopf algebra to any matched pair of Lie algebras, Lie groups, and affine algebraic groups. We canonically associate a modular pair in involution to any of these Hopf algebras. More precisely, to any locally finite representation of a matched pair object as above we associate a SAYD module to the corresponding Hopf algebra. At the end, we compute the Hopf cyclic cohomology of the associated Hopf algebra with coefficients in the aforementioned SAYD module in terms of Lie algebra cohomology of the Lie algebra associated to the matched pair object relative to an appropriate Levi subalgebra with coefficients induced by the original representation.

Hopf algebras of primitive Lie pseudogroups and Hopf cyclic cohomology

We associate to each infinite primitive Lie pseudogroup a Hopf algebra of `transverse symmetries', by refining a procedure due to Connes and the first author in the case of the general pseudogroup. The affiliated Hopf algebra can be viewed as a `quantum group' counterpart of the infinite-dimensional primitive Lie algebra of the pseudogroup. It is first constructed via its action on the étale groupoid associated to the pseudogroup, and then realized as a bicrossed product of a universal enveloping algebra by a Hopf algebra of regular functions on a formal group. The bicrossed product structure allows to express its Hopf cyclic cohomology in terms of a bicocyclic bicomplex analogous to the Chevalley-Eilenberg complex. As an application, we compute the relative Hopf cyclic cohomology modulo the linear isotropy for the Hopf algebra of the general pseudogroup, and find explicit cocycle representatives for the universal Chern classes in Hopf cyclic cohomology. As another application, we determine all Hopf cyclic cohomology groups for the Hopf algebra associated to the pseudogroup of local diffeomorphisms of the line.

Cup products in Hopf cyclic cohomology via cyclic modules I

This is the first one in a series of two papers on the continuation of our study in cup products in Hopf cyclic cohomology. In this note we construct cyclic cocycles of algebras out of Hopf cyclic cocycles of algebras and coalgebras. In the next paper we consider producing Hopf cyclic cocycle from "equivariant" Hopf cyclic cocycles. Our approach in both situations is based on (co)cyclic modules and bi(co)cyclic modules together with Eilenberg-Zilber theorem which is different from the old definition of cup products defined via traces and cotraces on DG algebras and coalgebras.

Cyclic Cohomology of Corings

We define cyclic cohomology of corings over not necessarily commutative algebras. We observe that the key fact which allows us to define this complex is that enveloping algebra of an algebra is a para Hopf algebroid. This observation enables us to define Hopf cyclic cohomology of corings on which para Hopf algebroids act.

Cyclic cohomology of Hopf algebras of transverse symmetries in codimension 1

We develop intrinsic tools for computing the periodic Hopf cyclic cohomology of Hopf algebras related to transverse symmetry in codimension 1. Besides the Hopf algebra found by Connes and the first author in their work on the local index formula for transversely hypoelliptic operators on foliations, this family includes its `Schwarzian' quotient, on which the Rankin-Cohen universal deformation formula is based, the extended Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra related to renormalization of divergences in QFT, as well as a series of cyclic coverings of these Hopf algebras, motivated by the treatment of transverse symmetry for nonorientable foliations. The method for calculating their Hopf cyclic cohomology is based on two computational devices, which work in tandem and complement each other: one is a spectral sequence for bicrossed product Hopf algebras and the other a Cartan-type homotopy formula in Hopf cyclic cohomology.

Cup Products in Hopf-Cyclic Cohomology

We construct cup products of two different kinds for Hopf-cyclic cohomology. When the Hopf algebra reduces to the ground field our first cup product reduces to Connes' cup product in ordinary cyclic cohomology. The second cup product generalizes Connes-Moscovici's characteristic map for actions of Hopf algebras on algebras.

Stable anti-Yetter-Drinfeld modules

We define and study a class of entwined modules (stable anti-Yetter-Drinfeld modules) that serve as coefficients for the Hopf-cyclic homology and cohomology. In particular, we explain their relationship with Yetter-Drinfeld modules and Drinfeld doubles. Among sources of examples of stable anti-Yetter-Drinfeld modules, we find Hopf-Galois extensions with a flipped version of the Miyashita-Ulbrich action.
