Ab Initio Nuclear Theory for Heavy Nuclei and Its Application to Dark Matter-Nucleus Scattering

The era of precision ab initio nuclear theory has arrived, enabling uncertainty-quantified predictions for nuclear structure and for interactions with external probes directly from the underlying nuclear force and electroweak currents. This review highlights recent breakthroughs that extend ab initio calculations to the heavy nucleus $^{208}$Pb, to medium-mass systems with complex deformation, and to weakly-bound nuclei near the driplines. We also summarize ab initio calculations of nuclear responses for dark matter direct detection. Together, these advances demonstrate how ab initio methods can substantially reduce nuclear-physics uncertainties in searches for physics beyond the Standard Model, providing a more robust interpretation of current and forthcoming precision experiments.

Novel approach to investigate ATOMKI anomaly using Coherent CAPTAIN-Mills detectors

ATOMKI nuclear anomaly has suggested a new BSM (Beyond the Standard Model) boson with mass $\sim17$ MeV emitted from excited nuclei and quickly decays into a pair of $e^+e^-$. In order to search for the new particle, we propose a new approach that utilizes the ongoing Coherent CAPTAIN-Mills (CCM) 10-ton LAr (liquid argon) detectors. The neutrons from the Lujan target can scatter inelastically by the PMT glass in the CCM detector can produce the new boson which solves the ATOMKI anomaly. The new boson can be detected from its decay to a $e^+e^-$ pair. We find that CCM probes a large area of the anomaly-allowable parameter space. We also show the prediction for a 100-ton LAr detector and 5-ton EOS water detector.

How do mirror charge radii constrain density dependence of the symmetry energy?

It has recently been suggested that differences in the charge radii of mirror nuclei ($ΔR^{\rm mirr}_{\rm ch}$) are strongly correlated with the neutron-skin thickness ($R_{\rm skin}$) of neutron-rich nuclei and with the slope of the symmetry energy ($L$). To test this assumption, we present ab initio calculations of $R_{\rm skin}$ in $^{48}$Ca and $^{208}$Pb, $ΔR^{\rm mirr}_{\rm ch}$ in $^{36}$Ca$-^{36}$S, $^{38}$Ca$-^{38}$Ar, $^{41}$Sc$-^{41}$Ca, $^{48}$Ni$-^{48}$Ca, $^{52}$Ni$-^{52}$Cr, and $^{54}$Ni$-^{54}$Fe mirror pairs, and $L$. Employing the recently developed 34 chiral interaction samples, identified by the history matching approach, we conduct rigorous statistical analysis of correlations among $ΔR^{\rm mirr}_{\rm ch}$, $R_{\rm skin}$ and $L$, accounting for quantified uncertainties from low-energy constants of chiral interaction, chiral effective field theory truncation and many-body method approximation. The ab initio results reveal an appreciable $ΔR^{\rm mirr}_{\rm ch}-L$ correlation in $fp$-shell mirror pairs. However, contrary to previous studies, the present calculation finds that the studied $sd$-shell mirror pairs do not exhibit any $ΔR^{\rm mirr}_{\rm ch}-L$ correlation.

Nuclear charge radii of silicon isotopes

The nuclear charge radius of $^{32}$Si was determined using collinear laser spectroscopy. The experimental result was confronted with ab initio nuclear lattice effective field theory, valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group, and mean field calculations, highlighting important achievements and challenges of modern many-body methods. The charge radius of $^{32}$Si completes the radii of the mirror pair $^{32}$Ar - $^{32}$Si, whose difference was correlated to the slope $L$ of the symmetry energy in the nuclear equation of state. Our result suggests $L \leq 60$\,MeV, which agrees with complementary observables.
