On exponential separation of analytic self-conformal sets on the real line

In a recent article, Rapaport showed that there is no dimension drop for exponentially separated analytic IFSs on the real line. We show that the set of such exponentially separated IFSs in the space of analytic IFSs contains an open and dense set in the $\mathcal{C}^2$ topology. Moreover, we give a sufficient condition for the IFS to be exponentially separated which allows us to construct explicit examples which are exponentially separated. The key technical tool is the introduction of the \emph{dual IFS} which we believe has significant interest in its own right. As an application we also characterise when an analytic IFS can be conjugated to a self-similar IFS.

Hausdorff spectrum of Lyapunov exponents for higher-dimensional self-affine systems

We study the Hausdorff dimension of projections of level sets of Lyapunov exponents for affine iterated function systems. Assuming that the tuple of linear parts is typical, we obtain a variational formula in terms of pressure, topological entropy, and the Lyapunov dimensions of invariant measures corresponding to Lyapunov exponents. In $\mathbb{R}^3$, we show that this value equals the Hausdorff dimension of the canonical projection of the level set under the strong open set condition. We further extend the result to arbitrary dimensions, showing that the same formula holds for Lebesgue-almost every choice of translation vectors under a suitable contraction assumption.

Hausdorff dimension of the Wedding cake type surfaces

In this paper, we study the Hausdorff dimension of fractal interpolation surfaces (FISs) over a triangular domain. These FISs are known as `wedding cake surfaces'. These surfaces are the attractor of some deterministic self-affine iterated function systems (IFS) on $\mathbb{R}^3$ generated by a fractal interpolation algorithm. Due to the recent seminal result of Rapaport (Adv. Math. 449 (2024) 109734), the dimension theory of self-affine IFS on $\mathbb{R}^3$ is known whenever the IFS is strongly irreducible and proximal. However, the self-affine IFSs associated with FIS are not strongly irreducible. We prove that the Hausdorff dimension of the self-affine set (or FIS) is the same as the affinity dimension outside a set of scaling parameters with zero Lebesgue measure. Lastly, by computing the overlapping number for the associated Furstenberg IFS, we determine the Hausdorff dimension for every type of scaling parameter in a certain range of parameters.

Projections of self-affine sets onto lines

We prove an all-directions Marstrand-Mattila projection theorem for self-affine measures and sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Under exponential separation, together with proximality and strong irreducibility assumptions on the linear parts, the projection of a self-affine measure onto every line has the expected Hausdorff dimension. If the proximality assumption is strengthened to strong pinching, then the same conclusion holds for the self-affine set $X$ itself, without any separation assumption. In the plane, strong irreducibility of the linear parts alone suffices, and this is sharp. As a corollary, if $X$ additionally has upper Minkowski dimension at most one, then its Minkowski dimension exists and equals its Hausdorff dimension, giving a partial affirmative answer to the folklore question of whether the Minkowski dimension exists for every self-affine set.

Hausdorff dimension of self-similar measures and sets with common fixed point structure

In this paper, we study the Hausdorff dimension of self-similar measures and sets on the real line, where the generating iterated function system consists of some maps that share the same fixed point. In particular, we will show that out of a Hausdorff co-dimension one exceptional set of natural parameters, such systems satisfy a weak exponential separation. This significantly strengthens the previous result of the first author and Szvák. As an application, we give the Hausdorff dimension of self-affine measures supported on the generalised 4-corner set.

Hausdorff measure of dominated planar self-affine sets with large dimension

In this paper, we investigate the Hausdorff measure of planar dominated self-affine sets at their affinity dimension. We show that the Hausdorff measure being positive and finite is equivalent to the Käenmäki measure being a mass distribution. Moreover, under the open bounded neighbourhood condition, we will show that the positivity of the Hausdorff measure is equivalent to the projection of the Käenmäki measure in every Furstenberg direction being absolutely continuous with bounded density. This also implies that the affinity and the Assouad dimension coincide. We will also provide examples for both of the cases when the Hausdorff measure is zero and positive.

Self-affine sponges with random contractions

We compute the almost sure Hausdorff dimension of random self-affine sponges in $\mathbb{R}^d$ without imposing any separation conditions. In this context, randomness arises from the matrices in the defining semigroup, which are random yet the corresponding affine maps share a fixed point.

Weakly separated self-affine carpets

In this paper, we study the Hausdorff and the box-counting dimensions of diagonally aligned self-affine carpets whose projections to the $x$- and $y$-axes satisfy the weak separation condition. In particular, we show that the Hausdorff dimension equals the limit of the Barański formula, and that the box-counting dimension is the limit of the Feng-Wang formula taken over the $n$-fold compositions of the IFS. We also prove several equivalent formulas for the box-counting dimension, and derive the dimension values for two examples.

Covering number on inhomogeneous graph-directed self-similar sets

For a strongly connected inhomogeneous graph-directed self-similar set $K^C$ satisfying the strong open set condition, we characterize the asymptotic behaviour of the $r$-covering number $N_r(K^C)$ as $r \downarrow 0$ in terms of the Minkowski dimension $s_0(G)$ of the attractor. If $\int_0^\infty e^{-s_0(G)t}N_{e^{-t}}(C_i)\,\mathrm{d} t<\infty$ for all vertices $i$, then $e^{-s_0(G)t}N_{e^{-t}}(K^C)$ has a limit as $t\to\infty$, which is a positive constant when the log-contraction group $G_M$ is $\mathbb{R}$ and a positive periodic function when $G_M$ is a lattice; if the integral diverges for some $i$, the limit is infinite.

Finer geometry of planar self-affine sets

For planar self-affine sets satisfying the strong separation condition, recent work of Bárány, Hochman, and Rapaport gives mild assumptions under which the Hausdorff dimension equals the affinity dimension. In this paper, we study dominated systems in that regime and ask which finer geometric properties can be characterized. In the range $\dim_{\mathrm{H}}(X) < 1$, we characterize Ahlfors regularity by equivalent conditions involving positivity of $\mathcal{H}^s(X)$, control of projection fibers, and the identity $\dim_{\mathrm{L}}(X)=\dim_{\mathrm{H}}(X)=\dim_{\mathrm{A}}(X)$. In the range $\dim_{\mathrm{H}}(X) \ge 1$, we identify the maximal slice dimension as $\dim_{\mathrm{A}}(X)-1$ in Furstenberg directions and provide examples showing that Marstrand-type all-slice bounds cannot hold in general. We also derive projection consequences for Assouad dimension and exhibit dominated irreducible examples with $\dim_{\mathrm{aff}}(X)<\dim_{\mathrm{A}}(X)$.

On the dimension theory of Okamoto's function

In this paper, we investigate the dimension theory of the one parameter family of Okamoto's function. We compute the Hausdorff, box-counting and Assouad dimensions of the graph for a typical choice of parameter. Furthermore, we study the dimension of the level sets. We give an upper bound on the dimension of every level set, and we show that for a typical choice of parameters this value is attained for Lebesgue almost every level sets.

Universal projection theorems with applications to multifractal analysis and the dimension of every ergodic measure on self-conformal sets simultaneously

We prove a universal projection theorem, giving conditions on a parametrized family of maps $Π_λ: X \to \mathbb{R}^d$ and a collection M of measures on X under which for almost every $λ$ equality $\dim_H Π_λμ= \min\{d, \dim_H μ\}$ holds for all measures $μ\in M$ simultaneously (i.e. on a full measure set of $λ$'s independent of $μ$). We require family $Π_λ$ to satisfy a transversality condition and collection M to satisfy a new condition called relative dimension separability. Under the same assumptions, we also prove that if the Assouad dimension of X is smaller than d, then for almost every $λ$, projection $Π_λ$ is nearly bi-Lipschitz (i.e. with pointwise $α$-Hölder inverse for every $α\in (0,1)$) at $μ$-a.e. x, for all $μ\in M$ simultaneously. Our setting encompasses families of orthogonal projections, natural projections corresponding to conformal iterated function systems, and non-autonomous or random IFS. As applications, we provide novel results on the multifractal analysis, giving formula for the Hausdorff dimension of a level set of the local dimension for a typical (w.r.t the translation parameter) self-similar measure on the line, valid for the full range spectrum (including the decreasing part of the spectrum; previous results were covering only the increasing part). Among another applications, we prove that given a parametrized contracting conformal IFS satisfying the transversality condition, for almost every parameter the dimension formula holds for all ergodic shift-invariant measures simultaneously. We also prove that the dimension part of the Marstrand's projection theorem holds simultaneously for the collection of all ergodic measures on a strongly separated self-conformal set and for the collection of all Gibbs measures on a self-conformal set (without any separation).

Smoothness of random self-similar measures on the line and the existence of interior points

In this paper, we study the smoothness of the density function of absolutely continuous measures supported on random self-similar sets on the line. We show that the natural projection of a measure with symbolic local dimension greater than 1 at every point is absolutely continuous with Hölder continuous density almost surely. In particular, if the similarity dimension is greater than 1 then the random self-similar set on the line contains an interior point almost surely.

On an abrasion motivated fractal model

In this paper, we consider a fractal model motivated by the abrasion of convex polyhedra, where the abrasion is realised by chipping small neighbourhoods of vertices. After providing a formal description of the successive chippings, we show that the net of edges converge to a compact limit set under mild assumptions. Furthermore, we study the upper box-counting dimension and the Hausdorff dimension of the limiting object of the net of edges after infinitely many chipping.

Dimension of planar non-conformal attractors with triangular derivative matrices

We study the dimension of the attractor and quasi-Bernoulli measures of parametrized families of iterated function systems of non-conformal and non-affine maps. We introduce a transversality condition under which, relying on a weak Ledrappier-Young formula, we show that the dimensions equal to the root of the subadditive pressure and the Lyapunov dimension, respectively, for almost every choice of parameters. We also exhibit concrete examples satisfying the transversality condition with respect to the translation parameters.

Level sets of prevalent Hölder functions

We study the level sets of prevalent Hölder functions. For a prevalent $α$-Hölder function on the unit interval, we show that the upper Minkowski dimension of every level set is bounded from above by $1-α$ and Lebesgue positively many level sets have Hausdorff dimension equal to $1-α$.

Typical dimension and absolute continuity for classes of dynamically defined measures, Part II : exposition and extensions

This paper is partly an exposition, and partly an extension of our work [1] to the multiparameter case. We consider certain classes of parametrized dynamically defined measures. These are push-forwards, under the natural projection, of ergodic measures for parametrized families of smooth iterated function systems (IFS) on the line. Under some assumptions, most crucially, a transversality condition, we obtain formulas for the Hausdorff dimension of the measure and absolute continuity for almost every parameter in the appropriate parameter region. The main novelty of [1] and the present paper is that not only the IFS, but also the ergodic measure in the symbolic space, whose push-forward we consider, depends on the parameter. This includes many interesting families of measures, in particular, invariant measures for IFS's with place-dependent probabilities and natural (equilibrium) measures for smooth IFS's. One of the goals of this paper is to present an exposition of [1] in a more reader-friendly way, emphasizing the ideas and proof strategies, but omitting the more technical parts. This exposition/survey is based in part on the series of lectures by Károly Simon at the Summer School "Dynamics and Fractals" in 2023 at the Banach Center, Warsaw. The main new feature, compared to [1], is that we consider multi-parameter families; in other words, the set of parameters is allowed to be multi-dimensional. This broadens the scope of applications. A new application considered here is to a class of Furstenberg-like measures. [1] B. Bárány, K. Simon, B. Solomyak and A. Slices of the Takagi function

We show that the Hausdorff dimension of any slice of the graph of the Takagi function is bounded above by the Assouad dimension of the graph minus one, and that the bound is sharp. The result is deduced from a statement on more general self-affine sets, which is of independent interest. We also prove that the Marstrand's slicing theorem on the graph of the Takagi function extends to all slices if and only if the upper pointwise dimension of every projection of the length measure on the $x$-axis lifted to the graph is at least one.
