Two-field mixed hp-finite elements for time-dependent problems in the refined theories of thermodynamics

Thanks to modern manufacturing technologies, heterogeneous materials with complex inner structures (e.g., foams) can be easily produced. However, their utilization is not straightforward, as the classical constitutive laws are not necessarily valid. According to various experimental observations, the Guyer--Krumhansl equation stands as a promising candidate to model such complex structures. However, the practical applications need a reliable and efficient algorithm that is capable of handling both complex geometries and advanced heat equations. In the present paper, we present the development of a $hp$-type finite element technique, which can be reliably applied. We investigate its convergence properties for various situations, being challenging in relation to stability and the treatment of fast propagation speeds. That algorithm is also proved to be outstandingly efficient, providing solutions four magnitudes faster than commercial algorithms.

Data Optimisation for a Deep Learning Recommender System

This paper advocates privacy preserving requirements on collection of user data for recommender systems. The purpose of our study is twofold. First, we ask if restrictions on data collection will hurt test quality of RNN-based recommendations. We study how validation performance depends on the available amount of training data. We use a combination of top-K accuracy, catalog coverage and novelty for this purpose, since good recommendations for the user is not necessarily captured by a traditional accuracy metric. Second, we ask if we can improve the quality under minimal data by using secondary data sources. We propose knowledge transfer for this purpose and construct a representation to measure similarities between purchase behaviour in data. This to make qualified judgements of which source domain will contribute the most. Our results show that (i) there is a saturation in test performance when training size is increased above a critical point. We also discuss the interplay between different performance metrics, and properties of data. Moreover, we demonstrate that (ii) our representation is meaningful for measuring purchase behaviour. In particular, results show that we can leverage secondary data to improve validation performance if we select a relevant source domain according to our similarly measure.

Performance Analysis of FEM Solvers on Practical Electromagnetic Problems

The paper presents a comparative analysis of different commercial and academic software. The comparison aims to examine how the integrated adaptive grid refinement methodologies can deal with challenging, electromagnetic-field related problems. For this comparison, two benchmark problems were examined in the paper. The first example is a solution of an L-shape domain like test problem, which has a singularity at a certain point in the geometry. The second problem is an induction heated aluminum rod, which accurate solution needs to solve a non-linear, coupled physical fields. The accurate solution of this problem requires applying adaptive mesh generation strategies or applying a very fine mesh in the electromagnetic domain, which can significantly increase the computational complexity. The results show that the fully-hp adaptive meshing strategies, which are integrated into Agros-suite, can significantly reduce the task's computational complexity compared to the automatic h-adaptivity, which is part of the examined, popular commercial solvers.
