Cacti, Toggles, and Reverse Plane Partitions

The cactus group acts combinatorially on crystals via partial Sch\"utzenberger involutions. This action has been studied extensively in type $A$ and described via Bender-Knuth involutions. We prove an analogous result for the family of crystals $B(n\varpi_1)$ in type $D$. Our main tools are combinatorial toggles acting on reverse plane partitions of height $n$. As a corollary, we show that the length one and two subdiagram elements generate the full cactus action, addressing conjectures of Dranowski, the second author, Kamnitzer, and Morton-Ferguson.

Heaps, crystals, and preprojective algebra modules

Fix a simply-laced semisimple Lie algebra. We study the crystal $ B(n\lambda)$, were $\lambda$ is a dominant minuscule weight and $n$ is a natural number. On one hand, $B(n\lambda)$ can be realized combinatorially by height $n$ reverse plane partitions on a heap associated to $\lambda$. On the other hand, we use this heap to define a module over the preprojective algebra of the underlying Dynkin quiver. Using the work of Saito and Savage-Tingley, we realize $B(n\lambda)$ via irreducible components of the quiver Grassmannian of $n$ copies of this module. In this paper, we describe an explicit bijection between these two models for $B(n\lambda)$ and prove that our bijection yields an isomorphism of crystals. Our main geometric tool is Nakajima's tensor product quiver varieties.

Bott-Samelson varieties and Poisson Ore extensions

Let $G$ be a connected complex semi-simple Lie group, and let $Z_{\bf u}$ be an $n$-dimensional Bott-Samelson variety of $G$, where ${\bf u}$ is any sequence of simple reflections in the Weyl group of $G$. We study the Poisson structure $π_n$ on $Z_{\bf u}$ defined by a standard multiplicative Poisson structure $π_{\rm st}$ on $G$. We explicitly express $π_n$ on each of the $2^n$ affine coordinate charts, one for every subexpression of ${\bf u}$, in terms of the root strings and the structure constants of the Lie algebra of $G$. We show that the restriction of $π_n$ to each affine coordinate chart gives rise to a Poisson structure on the polynomial algebra ${\mathbb{C}}[z_1, \ldots, z_n]$ which is an {\it iterated Poisson Ore extension} of $\mathbb{C}$ compatible with a rational action by a maximal torus of $G$. For canonically chosen $π_{\rm st}$, we show that the induced Poisson structure on ${\mathbb{C}}[z_1, \ldots, z_n]$ for every affine coordinate chart is in fact defined over ${\mathbb Z}$, thus giving rise to an iterated Poisson Ore extension of any field ${\bf k}$ of arbitrary characteristic. The special case of $π_n$ on the affine chart corresponding to the full subexpression of ${\bf u}$ yields an explicit formula for the standard Poisson structures on {\it generalized Bruhat cells} in Bott-Samelson coordinates. The paper establishes the foundation on generalized Bruhat cells and sets up the stage for their applications, some of which are discussed in the Introduction of the paper.

Toric surfaces with equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig atlases

A Kazhdan-Lusztig atlas, introduced by He, Knutson and Lu, on a stratified variety (V,Y) is a way of modeling the stratification Y of V locally on the stratification of Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties X^w_o \cap X_v by their intersection with opposite Schubert varieties X_u. We are interested in classifying smooth toric surfaces with Kazhdan-Lusztig atlases. This involves finding a degeneration of V to a union of Richardson varieties in the flag variety H/B_H of some Kac-Moody group H. We determine which toric surfaces have a chance at having a Kazhdan-Lusztig atlas by looking at their moment polytopes, then describe a way to find a suitable group H. More precisely, we find that (up to equivalence) there are 19 or 20 broken toric surfaces admitting simply-laced atlases, and that there are at most 7543 broken toric surfaces where H is any Kac-Moody group.
