On the Cox rings of some hypersurfaces

We introduce a cohomological method to compute Cox rings of hypersurfaces in the ambient space P^1 x P^n, which is more direct than existing methods. We prove that smooth hypersurfaces defined by regular sequences of coefficients are Mori dream spaces, generalizing a result of Ottem. We also compute Cox rings of certain specialized examples. In particular, we compute Cox rings in the well-studied family of Calabi--Yau threefolds of bidegree (2,4) in P^1 x P^3, determining explicitly how the Cox ring can jump discontinuously in a smooth family.

Polynomial systems admitting a simultaneous solution

We provide a complete description of the ideal that serves as the resultant ideal for n univariate polynomials of degree d. We in particular describe a set of generators of this resultant ideal arising as maximal minors of a set of cascading matrices formed from the coefficients of the polynomials, generalising the classical Sylvester resultant of two polynomials.

Ideals, representations and a symmetrised Bernoulli triangle

We study some representations of symmetric groups arising from a certain ideal in the coordinate ring of affine n-space. Our results give graded and representation-theoretic enhancements of sequence 337 of the Online Encyclopaedia of Integer Sequences, involving a symmetric version of the Bernoulli triangle.

On K3 fibred Calabi-Yau threefolds in weighted scrolls

The aim of this paper is to classify mildly singular Calabi-Yau threefolds fibred in low-degree weighted K3 surfaces and embedded as anticanonical hypersurfaces in weighted scrolls, extending results of Mullet. We also study projective degenerations, revisiting an example due to Gross and Ruan. Finally we briefly discuss the general question of embedding a projective fibration into a weighted scroll.

Refined Ehrhart series and bigraded rings

We study a natural set of refinements of the Ehrhart series of a closed polytope, first considered by Chapoton. We compute the refined series in full generality for a simplex of dimension d, a cross-polytope of dimension d, respectively a hypercube of dimension d<4, using commutative algebra. We deduce summation formulae for products of q-integers with different arguments, generalizing a classical identity due to MacMahon and Carlitz. We also present a characterisation of a certain refined Eulerian polynomial in algebraic terms.

On the equations defining some Hilbert schemes

We work out details of the extrinsic geometry for two Hilbert schemes of some contemporary interest: the Hilbert scheme of two points on the projective plane and the dense open set parametrizing non-planar clusters in the punctual Hilbert scheme of clusters of length four on affine three-space with support at the origin. We find explicit equations in natural projective, respectively affine embeddings for these spaces. In particular, we answer a question of Bernd Sturmfels who asked for a description of the latter space that is amenable to further computations. While the explicit equations we find are controlled in a precise way by the representation theory of SL_3, our arguments also rely on computer algebra.

Enumerating coloured partitions in 2 and 3 dimensions

We study generating functions of ordinary and plane partitions coloured by the action of a finite subgroup of the corresponding special linear group. After reviewing known results for the case of ordinary partitions, we formulate a conjecture concerning a factorisation property of the generating function of coloured plane partitions that can be thought of as an orbifold analogue of a conjecture of Maulik et al., now a theorem, in three-dimensional Donaldson-Thomas theory. We study natural quantisations of the generating functions arising from geometry, discuss a quantised version of our conjecture, and prove a positivity result for the quantised coloured plane partition function under a geometric assumption.

Cohomological Donaldson-Thomas theory

This review gives an introduction to cohomological Donaldson-Thomas theory: the study of a cohomology theory on moduli spaces of sheaves on Calabi-Yau threefolds, and of complexes in 3-Calabi-Yau categories, categorifying their numerical DT invariant. Local and global aspects of the theory are both covered, including representations of quivers with potential. We will discuss the construction of the DT sheaf, a nontrivial topological coefficient system on such a moduli space, along with some cohomology computations. The Cohomological Hall Algebra, an algebra structure on cohomological DT spaces, will also be introduced. The review closes with some recent appearances, and extensions, of the cohomological DT story in the theory of knot invariants, of cluster algebras, and elsewhere.

Motivic Donaldson--Thomas invariants of some quantized threefolds

This paper is motivated by the question of how motivic Donaldson--Thomas invariants behave in families. We compute the invariants for some simple families of noncommutative Calabi--Yau threefolds, defined by quivers with homogeneous potentials. These families give deformation quantizations of affine three-space, the resolved conifold, and the resolution of the transversal $A_n$-singularity. It turns out that their invariants are generically constant, but jump at special values of the deformation parameter, such as roots of unity. The corresponding generating series are written in closed form, as plethystic exponentials of simple rational functions. While our results are limited by the standard dimensional reduction techniques that we employ, they nevertheless allow us to conjecture formulae for more interesting cases, such as the elliptic Sklyanin algebras.

Symmetries and stabilization for sheaves of vanishing cycles

Let $U$ be a smooth $\mathbb C$-scheme, $f:U\to\mathbb A^1$ a regular function, and $X=$Crit$(f)$ the critical locus, as a $\mathbb C$-subscheme of $U$. Then one can define the "perverse sheaf of vanishing cycles" $PV_{U,f}$, a perverse sheaf on $X$. This paper proves four main results: (a) Suppose $Φ:U\to U$ is an isomorphism with $f\circΦ=f$ and $Φ\vert_X=$id$_X$. Then $Φ$ induces an isomorphism $Φ_*:PV_{U,f}\to PV_{U,f}$. We show that $Φ_*$ is multiplication by det$(dΦ\vert_X)=1$ or $-1$. (b) $PV_{U,f}$ depends up to canonical isomorphism only on $X^{(3)},f^{(3)}$, for $X^{(3)}$ the third-order thickening of $X$ in $U$, and $f^{(3)}=f\vert_{X^{(3)}}:X^{(3)}\to\mathbb A^1$. (c) If $U,V$ are smooth $\mathbb C$-schemes, $f:U\to\mathbb A^1$, $g:V\to\mathbb A^1$ are regular, $X=$Crit$(f)$, $Y=$Crit$(g)$, and $Φ:U\to V$ is an embedding with $f=g\circΦ$ and $Φ\vert_X:X\to Y$ an isomorphism, there is a natural isomorphism $Θ_Φ:PV_{U,f}\toΦ\vert_X^*(PV_{V,g})\otimes_{\mathbb Z_2}P_Φ$, for $P_Φ$ a natural principal $\mathbb Z_2$-bundle on $X$. (d) If $(X,s)$ is an oriented d-critical locus in the sense of Joyce arXiv:1304.4508, there is a natural perverse sheaf $P_{X,s}$ on $X$, such that if $(X,s)$ is locally modelled on Crit$(f:U\to\mathbb A^1)$ then $P_{X,s}$ is locally modelled on $PV_{U,f}$. We also generalize our results to replace $U,X$ by complex analytic spaces, and $PV_{U,f}$ by $\mathcal D$-modules, or mixed Hodge modules. We discuss applications of (d) to categorifying Donaldson-Thomas invariants of Calabi-Yau 3-folds, and to defining a 'Fukaya category' of Lagrangians in a complex symplectic manifold using perverse sheaves. This is the third in a series of papers arXiv:1304.4508, arXiv:1305.6302, arXiv:1305.6428, arXiv:1312.0090, arXiv:1403.2403, arXiv:1404.1329, arXiv:1504.00690.

Purity for graded potentials and quantum cluster positivity

Consider a smooth quasiprojective variety X equipped with a C*-action, and a regular function f: X -> C which is C*-equivariant with respect to a positive weight action on the base. We prove the purity of the mixed Hodge structure and the hard Lefschetz theorem on the cohomology of the vanishing cycle complex of f on proper components of the critical locus of f, generalizing a result of Steenbrink for isolated quasi-homogeneous singularities. Building on work of Kontsevich-Soibelman, Nagao and Efimov, we use this result to prove the quantum positivity conjecture for cluster mutations for all quivers admitting a positively graded nondegenerate potential. We deduce quantum positivity for all quivers of rank at most 4; quivers with nondegenerate potential admitting a cut; and quivers with potential associated to triangulations of surfaces with marked points and nonempty boundary.

Nekrasov's Partition Function and Refined Donaldson-Thomas Theory: the Rank One Case

This paper studies geometric engineering, in the simplest possible case of rank one (Abelian) gauge theory on the affine plane and the resolved conifold. We recall the identification between Nekrasov's partition function and a version of refined Donaldson-Thomas theory, and study the relationship between the underlying vector spaces. Using a purity result, we identify the vector space underlying refined Donaldson-Thomas theory on the conifold geometry as the exterior space of the space of polynomial functions on the affine plane, with the (Lefschetz) SL(2)-action on the threefold side being dual to the geometric SL(2)-action on the affine plane. We suggest that the exterior space should be a module for the (explicitly not yet known) cohomological Hall algebra (algebra of BPS states) of the conifold.

Motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants of the conifold and the refined topological vertex

We compute the motivic Donaldson-Thomas theory of the resolved conifold, in all chambers of the space of stability conditions of the corresponding quiver. The answer is a product formula whose terms depend on the position of the stability vector, generalizing known results for the corresponding numerical invariants. Our formulae imply in particular a motivic form of the DT/PT correspondence for the resolved conifold. The answer for the motivic PT series is in full agreement with the prediction of the refined topological vertex formalism.

Calabi-Yau threefolds in weighted flag varieties

We review the construction of families of projective varieties, in particular Calabi--Yau threefolds, as quasilinear sections in weighted flag varieties. We also describe a construction of tautological orbi-bundles on these varieties, which may be of interest in heterotic model building.

Motivic degree zero Donaldson-Thomas invariants

Given a smooth complex threefold X, we define the virtual motive of the Hilbert scheme of n points on X. In the case when X is Calabi-Yau, this gives a motivic refinement of the n-point degree zero Donaldson-Thomas invariant of X. The key example is affine three-space, where the Hilbert scheme can be expressed as the critical locus of a regular function on a smooth variety, and its virtual motive is defined in terms of the Denef-Loeser motivic nearby fiber. A crucial technical result asserts that if a function is equivariant with respect to a suitable torus action, its motivic nearby fiber is simply given by the motivic class of a general fiber. This allows us to compute the generating function of the virtual motives of the Hilbert schemes of affine three-space via a direct computation involving the motivic class of the commuting variety. We then give a formula for the generating function for arbitrary X as a motivic exponential, generalizing known results in lower dimensions. The weight polynomial specialization leads to a product formula in terms of deformed MacMahon functions, analogous to Gottsche's formula for the Poincare polynomials of the Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces.

Constructing projective varieties in weighted flag varieties

We compute the Hilbert series of general weighted flag varieties and discuss a computer-aided method to determine their defining equations. We apply our results to weighted flag varieties coming from the Lie groups of type G_2 and GL(6), to construct some families of polarised projective varieties in codimensions 8 and 6, respectively.

The Milnor fibre of the Pfaffian and the Hilbert scheme of four points on C^3

We study a natural Hodge module on the Hilbert scheme of four points on affine three-space, which categorifies the Donaldson--Thomas invariant of the Hilbert scheme. We determine the weight filtration on the Hodge module explicitly in terms of intersection cohomology complexes, and compute the E-polynomial of its cohomology. The computations make essential use of a description of the singularity of the Hilbert scheme as the degeneracy locus of the Pfaffian function.

Non-commutative Donaldson-Thomas theory and the conifold

Given a quiver algebra A with relations defined by a superpotential, this paper defines a set of invariants of A counting framed cyclic A-modules, analogous to rank-1 Donaldson-Thomas invariants of Calabi-Yau threefolds. For the special case when A is the non-commutative crepant resolution of the threefold ordinary double point, it is proved using torus localization that the invariants count certain pyramid-shaped partition-like configurations, or equivalently infinite dimer configurations in the square dimer model with a fixed boundary condition. The resulting partition function admits an infinite product expansion, which factorizes into the rank-1 Donaldson-Thomas partition functions of the commutative crepant resolution of the singularity and its flop. The different partition functions are speculatively interpreted as counting stable objects in the derived category of A-modules under different stability conditions; their relationship should then be an instance of wall crossing in the space of stability conditions on this triangulated category.
