Energy hierarchies governing quarkonium dynamics in Heavy Ion Collisions

In this paper, we critically examine hierarchies between energy scales that determine quarkonium dynamics in the quark gluon plasma. A particularly important role is played by the ratio of the binding energy of species ($E_b$) and the medium scales; temperature ($T$) and Debye mass ($m_D$). It is well known that if these ratios are much larger than one then the dominant process governing quarkonium evolution is dissociation by thermal gluons (gluo-dissociation). On the other hand, if this ratio is much smaller than one then quarkonium dynamics is dominated by screening and Landau damping of the exchanged gluons. Here we show that over most of the evolution, the scale hierarchies do not fall in either limit and one needs to use the full structure of the gluonic spectral function to follow the dynamics of the $Q\bar{Q}$ pair. This has a significant bearing when we follow the quantum dynamics of quarkonia in the medium. The inverse medium relaxation time is also $\sim T$ and if $E_b$ is comparable (or larger) in magnitude to $T$, the quantum evolution of $Q\bar{Q}$ is non-local in time within the Brownian approximation.

Polarized $Z$ cross sections in Higgsstrahlung for the determination of anomalous $ZZH$ couplings

The production of a Higgs boson in association with a $Z$ at an electron-positron collider is one of the cleanest methods for the measurement of the couplings of the Higgs boson. In view of the large production cross section at energies a little above the threshold, it seems feasible to make a more detailed study of the process by measuring the cross sections for polarized $Z$ in order to measure possible anomalous $ZZH$ couplings. We show that certain combinations of cross sections in $e^+e^- \to ZH$ with different $Z$ polarizations help to enhance or isolate the effect of one of the two kinds of $ZZH$ couplings possible on general grounds of CP and Lorentz invariance. These combinations can be useful to get information on the $ZZH$ coupling in the specific contexts of an effective field theory, two-Higgs-doublet models, and composite Higgs models, in a relatively model-independent fashion. We find in particular that the longitudinal helicity fraction of the $Z$ is expected to be insensitive to anomalous couplings, and would be close to its value in the standard model in the scenarios we consider. We also discuss the sensitivity of the proposed measurements to the anomalous couplings.

Use of $Z$ polarization in $e^+e^- \to ZH$ to measure the triple-Higgs coupling

It is shown that a certain angular asymmetry of charged leptons produced in the decay of $Z$ in the process $e^+e^- \to ZH$, related to a tensor polarization component of the $Z$, can be used to constrain the anomalous triple-Higgs coupling, independent of the other anomalous couplings like the $ZZH$ coupling which dominate at tree level. This is because the angular asymmetry is odd under na\" ive time reversal, and hence dependent on loop-level contributions. At a future $e^+e^-$ collider like the International Linear Collider (ILC), for example, a limit of about $3.4$ might be placed on the ratio of the actual triple Higgs coupling to that predicted in the standard model for a centre-of-mass energy of 500 GeV and an integrated luminosity of 30 fb$^{-1}$ with electron and positron beams having longitudinal polarization of $-80\%$ and $+30\%$, respectively.

Indirect measurement of triple-Higgs coupling at an electron-positron collider with polarized beams

We examine the possibility of using single-Higgs production at an $e^+e^-$ collider with polarized beams to measure, or constrain, indirectly a possible anomalous triple-Higgs coupling, which can contribute to the process via one-loop diagrams. In the dominant process $e^+e^- \to ZH$, longitudinally polarized beams can lead to an improvement in the cross section by 50\% for $e^-$ and $e^+$ polarizations of $-0.8$ and $+0.3$, respectively. This corresponds to an improvement in the sensitivity to the triple-Higgs coupling of about 18\% for a centre-of-mass energy of 250 GeV and an integrated luminosity of 2 ab$^{-1}$, making a strong case of beam polarization. This also implies that with polarized beams, the luminosity needed to get a particular sensitivity is less by about 33\% as compared to that needed with unpolarized beams. Even when only the $e^-$ beam is polarized $-0.8$, the improvement in the sensitivity is about 8\%. We also study the effect of longitudinal beam polarization on the sensitivity to the triple-Higgs coupling of Higgs production through the subdominant process $e^+e^- \to H ν\bar ν$ occurring through $WW$ fusion.

Momentum broadening of heavy quark in a magnetized thermal QCD medium

Anisotropic momentum diffusion coefficients of heavy quarks have been computed in a strongly magnetized quark-gluon plasma beyond the static limit within the framework of Langevin dynamics. Depending on the orientation of the motion of the heavy quark with respect to the direction of the magnetic field, five momentum diffusion coefficients of heavy quark have been estimated in the magnetized thermal medium. Specifically, we have focussed our attention to temperature range and strength of magnetic field satisfying the condition, $\it{i.e.}$ $M\gg\sqrt{eB}\gg T$, $M$ being the mass of heavy quark. The light quarks/antiquarks follow $1+1-$dimensional lowest Landau level (LLL) kinematics, and heavy quark dynamics are not directly affected by the magnetic field in the medium. The thermal gluon contribution to the diffusion coefficient is proportions to $T^3$, whereas, the contribution of light quarks in the lowest Landau state to the same is seen to be proportional to $T|eB|$. Furthermore, it is observed that for the case of heavy quark motion parallel to the magnetic field, the component of diffusion coefficient transverse both to the field and the heavy quark velocity $(κ^{\parallel}_{TT})$ turns out to be dominant as compared to the component longitudinal to both the field and motion $(κ^{\parallel}_{LL})$, $i.e.$, $κ^{\parallel}_{TT}\gg κ^{\parallel}_{LL}$. Further, for the case of heavy quark moving perpendicular to the magnetic field, it is seen that the diffusion coefficients transverse to the magnetic field are dominant, i.e., $κ^{\perp}_{LT}, κ^{\perp}_{TT}\gg κ^{\perp}_{TL}$.

HQ Collisional energy loss in a magnetized medium

We study the effect of the magnetic field on the collisional energy loss of heavy quark (HQ) moving in a magnetized thermal partonic medium. This is investigated in the strong field approximation where the lowest Landau level (LLL) becomes relevant. We work in the limit $g\sqrt{eB}\ll T\ll \sqrt{eB}$ which is relevant for heavy ion collisions. Effects of the magnetic field are incorporated through the resummed gluon propagator in which the dominant contribution arises from the quark loop. We also take the approximation $\sqrt{eB}\ll M$, M being the HQ mass, so that the HQ is not Landau quantized. It turns out that there are only two types of scatterings that contribute to the energy loss of HQ; the Coulomb scattering of HQ with light quarks/anti-quarks and the t-channel Compton scattering. It is observed that for a given magnetic field, the dominant contribution to the collisional energy loss arises from Compton scattering process i.e., $Qg\rightarrow Qg$. On the other hand, of the two processes, the Coulomb scattering i.e., $Qq\rightarrow Qq$ is more sensitive to the magnetic field. The net collisional energy loss is seen to increase with increase in the magnetic field. For a reasonable strength of the magnetic field, the field dependent contribution to the collisional energy loss is of the same order as to the case without magnetic field which can be important for the jet quenching phenomena in the heavy ion collision experiments.

Heavy quark transport in a viscous semi QGP

We study the effect of shear and bulk viscosities on the heavy quark transport coefficient within the matrix model of semi QGP. Dissipative effects are incorporated through the first-order viscous correction in the quark/antiquark and gluon distribution function. It is observed that while the shear viscosity effects reduces the drag of heavy quark the bulk viscosity effects increase the drag and the diffusion coefficients of heavy quark. For finite values of η/s and ξ/s, Polyakov loop further decreases the drag and the diffusion coefficients as compared to perturbative QCD.

Heavy quark diffusion in a Polyakov loop plasma

We calculate the transport coefficients, drag and momentum diffusion, of a heavy quark in a thermalized plasma of light quarks in the background of Polyakov loop. Quark thermal mass and the gluon Debye mass are calculated in a non-trivial Polyakov loop background. The constituent quark masses and the Polyakov loop is estimated within a Polyakov loop quark meson (PQM) model. The relevant scattering amplitudes for heavy quark and light partons in the background of Polyakov loop has been estimated within the matrix model. We have also compared the results with the Polyakov loop parameter estimated from lattice QCD simulations. We have studied the temperature and momentum dependence of heavy quark drag and diffusion coefficients. It is observed that the temperature dependence of the drag coefficient is quite weak which may play a key role to understand heavy quark observables at RHIC and LHC energies.

Probing vorticity in heavy ion collision with dilepton production

We study the effect of vorticity present in heavy ion collisions (HICs) on the temperature evolution of hot quark-gluon plasma in the presence of spin-vorticity coupling. The initial global rotation entails a nontrivial dependence of the longitudinal flow velocity on the transverse coordinates and also develops a transverse velocity component that depends upon the longitudinal coordinate. Both of these velocities lead to a 2+1 dimensional expansion of the fireball. It is observed that with finite vorticity and spin-polarization the fireball cools faster as compared to the case without vorticity. Furthermore, we discuss the consequence of this on the production of thermal dileptons.

Heavy quark complex potential in a strongly magnetized hot QGP medium

We study the effect of a strong constant magnetic field, generated in relativistic heavy ion collisions, on the heavy quark complex potential. We work in the strong magnetic field limit with the lowest Landau level approximation. We find that the screening of the real part of the potential increases with the increase in the magnetic field. Therefore, we expect less binding of the $ Q\bar{Q} $ pair in the presence of a strong magnetic field. The imaginary part of the potential increases in magnitude with the increase in the magnetic field, leading to an increase of the width of the quarkonium state with the magnetic field. All of these effects result in the early dissociation of $ Q\bar{Q} $ states in a magnetized hot quark-gluon plasma medium.
