Cantori and dynamical localization in the Bunimovich Stadium

Classical and quantum properties of the Bunimovich stadium in the diffusive regime are reviewed. In particular, the quantum properties are directly investigated using an approximate quantum map. Different localized regimes are found, namely, perturbative, quasi-integrable (due to classical Cantori), dynamical and ergodic.

Statistical Study for Eigenfunctions of 1-dimensional Tight Binding Model

For energy eigenfunctions of 1-dimensional tight binding model, the distribution of ratio of their nearest components, denoted by f(p), gives information for their fluctuation properties. The shape of f(p) is studied numerically for three versions of the 1D tight binding model. It is found that when perturbation is strong the shape of f(p) is usually quite close to that of the Lorentzian distribution. In the case of weak perturbation the shape of the central part of f(p) is model-dependent while tails of f(p) are still close to the Lorentzian form.

Nonadiabatic geometric phase for the cyclic evolution of a time-dependent Hamiltonian system

The geometric phases of the cyclic states of a generalized harmonic oscillator with nonadiabatic time-periodic parameters are discussed in the framework of squeezed state. It is shown that the cyclic and quasicyclic squeezed states correspond to the periodic and quasiperiodic solutions of an effective Hamiltonian defined on an extended phase space, respectively. The geometric phase of the cyclic squeezed state is found to be a phase-space area swept out by a periodic orbit. Furthermore, a class of cyclic states are expressed as a superposition of an infinte number of squeezed states. Their geometric phases are found to be independent of $\hbar$, and equal to $-(n+1/2)$ times the classical nonadiabatic Hannay angle.

Squeezed state dynamics of kicked quantum systems

We study kicked quantum systems by using the squeezed state approach. Taking the kicked quantum harmonic oscillator as an example, we demonstrate that chaos in an underlying classical system can be enhanced as well as suppressed by quantum fluctuations. Three different energy diffusions are observed in the kicked quantum harmonic oscillator, namely, localization, linear diffusion, and quadratic diffusion.

Bifurcations and Transitions to Chaos in An Inverted Pendulum

We consider a parametrically forced pendulum with a vertically oscillating suspension point. It is well known that, as the amplitude of the vertical oscillation is increased, its inverted state (corresponding to the vertically-up configuration) undergoes a cascade of ``resurrections,'' i.e., it becomes stabilized after its instability, destabilize again, and so forth ad infinitum. We make a detailed numerical investigation of the bifurcations associated with such resurrections of the inverted pendulum by varying the amplitude and frequency of the vertical oscillation. It is found that the inverted state stabilizes via alternating ``reverse'' subcritical pitchfork and period-doubling bifurcations, while it destabilizes via alternating ``normal'' supercritical period-doubling and pitchfork bifrucations. An infinite sequence of period-doubling bifurcations, leading to chaos, follows each destabilization of the inverted state. The critical behaviors in the period-doubling cascades are also discussed.

Relevance of Chaos in Numerical Solutions of Quantum Billiards

In this paper we have tested several general numerical methods in solving the quantum billiards, such as the boundary integral method (BIM) and the plane wave decomposition method (PWDM). We performed extensive numerical investigations of these two methods in a variety of quantum billiards: integrable systens (circles, rectangles, and segments of circular annulus), Kolmogorov-Armold-Moser (KAM) systems (Robnik billiards), and fully chaotic systems (ergodic, such as Bunimovich stadium, Sinai billiard and cardiod billiard). We have analyzed the scaling of the average absolute value of the systematic error $ΔE$ of the eigenenergy in units of the mean level spacing with the density of discretization $b$ (which is number of numerical nodes on the boundary within one de Broglie wavelength) and its relationship with the geometry and the classical dynamics. In contradistinction to the BIM, we find that in the PWDM the classical chaos is definitely relevant for the numerical accuracy at a fixed density of discretization $b$. We present evidence that it is not only the ergodicity that matters, but also the Lyapunov exponents and Kolmogorov entropy. We believe that this phenomenon is one manifestation of quantum chaos.

Analytical Results For The Steady State Of Traffic Flow Models With Stochastic Delay

Exact mean field equations are derived analytically to give the fundamental diagrams, i.e., the average speed - car density relations, for the Fukui-Ishibashi one-dimensional traffic flow cellular automaton model of high speed vehicles $(v_{max}=M>1) $ with stochastic delay. Starting with the basic equation describing the time evolution of the number of empty sites in front of each car, the concepts of inter-car spacings longer and shorter than $M$ are introduced. The probabilities of having long and short spacings on the road are calculated. For high car densities $(ρ\geq 1/M)$, it is shown that inter-car spacings longer than $M$ will be shortened as the traffic flow evolves in time, and any initial configurations approach a steady state in which all the inter-car spacings are of the short type. Similarly for low car densities $(ρ\leq 1/M)$, it can be shown that traffic flow approaches an asymptotic steady state in which all the inter-car spacings are longer than $M-2$. The average traffic speed is then obtained analytically as a function of car density in the asymptotic steady state. The fundamental diagram so obtained is in excellent agreement with simulation data.

The quantum Frenkel-Kontorova model: a squeezed state approach

The squeezed state is used to study the one-dimensional quantum mechanical Frenkel Kontorova model. A set of coupled equations for the particle's expectation value and the fluctuations for the ground state are derived. It is shown that quantum fluctuations renormalize the standard map to an effective sawtooth map. The mechanism underling provides an alternative and simple explanation of dynamical localization in quantum chaos.

Resonant steps and spatiotemporal dynamics in the damped dc-driven Frenkel-Kontorova chain

Kink dynamics of the damped Frenkel-Kontorova (discrete sine-Gordon) chain driven by a constant external force are investigated. Resonant steplike transitions of the average velocity occur due to the competitions between the moving kinks and their radiated phasonlike modes. A mean-field consideration is introduced to give a precise prediction of the resonant steps. Slip-stick motion and spatiotemporal dynamics on those resonant steps are discussed. Our results can be applied to studies of the fluxon dynamics of 1D Josephson-junction arrays and ladders, dislocations, tribology and other fields.

Quantum fluctuations: Enhancement or suppression of chaos?

We have studied the effects of quantum fluctuations on dynamical behavior by using squeezed state approach. Our numerical results of the kicked harmonic oscillator demonstrate qualitatively and quantitatively that quantum fluctuations can not only enhance chaos but also suppress classical diffusion. In addition, the squeezed state approach also gives a simple picture of dynamical localization.

Energy transport and correlation between two attractors connected by Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chain

We study numerically time evolution of a system which consists of two attractors connected by Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) chain. It is found that after sufficiently long time there exits self-consistent large scale structure in the system. The wavelet transform is used to separate the modes in different scales. We found that the nonlinear long wavelength mode propagating along the chain assists the energy transport. Further, all points in the system are found to be correlated. Our results explain satisfactorily why the chaotic behaviour is not enough to ensure the Fourier heat law and the thermal conductivity diverges as it is found recently by Lepri et al (PRL 78, 1897(1997).).

Plateau in Above-Threshold-Ionization Spectra and Chaotic Behavior in Rescattering Process

An improved quasistatic model is used to describe the ionization process of atoms in intense linearly polarized fields. Numerical calculations of Above-Threshold-Ionization (ATI) energy spectra and photoelectron angular distributions (PAD) of hydrogen atoms reveal clearly plateau and side lobe structures, which are in good agreement with recent ATI experiments. Our results show that, the existence of this plateau and side lobes is consequences of the classical kinematics of the electrons in combined atom and laser fields. Furthermore, we find that the onset of these unusual phenomena is related to the onset of the chaotic behavior in the system.

Chaotic Behavior of a One-dimensional Model Atom in an Intense Field

In this paper we describe the rescattering process in optical field ionization through a one-dimensional model, which improves the well-known quasistatic model by adding the smoothed Coulomb potential in its second step. The above-threshold ionization spectra and high-order harmonic generation are calculated from this model. They are qualitatively in agreement with the quantum results and experiments. In particular, we find that this model is characterized by chaotic scattering. Modern nonlinear theory is used to analyze this dynamical system. It is found that singular self-similar fractal structure exists in the phase-dependence energy spectra, and the unstable manifolds constitute the chaotic scattering pattern. Our results also demonstrate a close connection of irregular trajectories with the energy spectra and high-order harmonic generation. We conclude that the chaotic behavior plays an important role in this one-dimensional model of optical field ionization.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of discrete sine-Gordon lattices with sinusoidal couplings

The spatiotemporal dynamics of a damped sine-Gordon chain with sinusoidal nearest-neighbor couplings driven by a constant uniform force are discussed. The velocity characteristics of the chain versus the external force is shown. Dynamics in the high- and low-velocity regimes are investigated. It is found that in the high-velocity regime, the dynamics is dominated by rotating modes, the velocity shows a branching bifurcation feature, while in the low-velocity regime, the velocity exhibits step-like dynamical transitions, broken by the destruction of strong resonances.

Statistical analysis of scars in stadium billiard

In this paper, by using our improved plane wave decomposition method, we study the scars in the eigenfunctions of the stadium billiard from very low state to as high as about the one millionth state. In the systematic searching for scars of various types, we have used the approximate criterion based on the quantization of the classical action along the unstable periodic orbit supporting the scar. We have analized the profile of the integrated probability density along the orbit. We found that the maximal integrated intensity of different types of scars scales in different way with the $\hbar$, which confirms qualitatively and quantitatively the existing theories of scars such as that of Bogomolny (1988) and that of Robnik (1989).

Heat conduction in one dimensional chains

We study numerically the thermal conductivity in several different one dimensional chains. We show that the phonon-lattice interaction is the main ingredient of the Fourier heat law. Our argument provides a rather satisfactory explanation to all existing numerical results concerning this problem.

Asymmetric gap soliton modes in diatomic lattices with cubic and quartic nonlinearity

Nonlinear localized excitations in one-dimensional diatomic lattices with cubic and quartic nonlinearity are considered analytically by a quasi-discreteness approach. The criteria for the occurence of asymmetric gap solitons (with vibrating frequency lying in the gap of phonon bands) and small-amplitude, asymmetric intrinsic localized modes (with the vibrating frequency being above all the phonon bands) are obtained explicitly based on the modulational instabilities of corresponding linear lattice plane waves. The expressions of particle displacement for all these nonlinear localized excitations are also given. The result is applied to standard two-body potentials of the Toda, Born-Mayer-Coulomb, Lennard-Jones, and Morse type. The comparison with previous numerical study of the anharmonic gap modes in diatomic lattices for the standard two-body potentials is made and good agreement is found.

Dynamical phase diagram of the dc-driven underdamped Frenkel-Kontorova chain

Multistep dynamical phase transition from the locked to the running state of atoms in response to a dc external force is studied by MD simulations of the generalized Frenkel-Kontorova model in the underdamped limit. We show that the hierarchy of transition recently reported [Braun et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 1295 (1997)] strongly depends on the value of the friction constant. A simple phenomenological explanation for the friction dependence of the various critical forces separating intermediate regimes is given.
