Lattice dynamics with molecular Berry curvature: chiral optical phonons

Under the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, the electronic ground state evolves adiabatically and can accumulate geometrical phases characterized by the molecular Berry curvature. In this work, we study the effect of the molecular Berry curvature on the lattice dynamics in a system with broken time-reversal symmetry. The molecular Berry curvature is formulated based on the single-particle electronic Bloch states. It manifests as a non-local effective magnetic field in the equations of motion of the ions that are beyond the widely adopted Raman spin-lattice coupling model. We employ the Bogoliubov transformation to solve the quantized equations of motion and to obtain phonon polarization vectors. We apply our formula to the Haldane model on a honeycomb lattice and find a large molecular Berry curvature around the Brillouin zone center. As a result, the degeneracy of the optical branches at this point is lifted intrinsically. The lifted optical phonons show circular polarizations, possess large phonon Berry curvature, and have a nearly quantized angular momentum that modifies the Einstein-de Haas effect.

Topological electric driving of magnetization dynamics in insulators

Established forms of electromagnetic coupling are usually conservative (in insulators) or dissipative (in metals and semiconductors). Here we point out the possibility of nondissipative electric driving of magnetization dynamics, if the valence electronic states have nontrivial topology in the combined space of crystal momentum and magnetization configuration. We provide a hybrid insulator system to demonstrate that the topology-based nonconservative electrical generalized force is capable of supporting sustained magnetization motion in the presence of Gilbert damping, with quantized and steady energy pumping into magnetization motion from the electric field. We also generalize our results to magnetic textures, and discuss electric field induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction which can be nonconservative.

Adiabatically Induced Orbital Magnetization

A semiclassical theory for the orbital magnetization due to adiabatic evolutions of Bloch electronic states is proposed. It renders a unified theory for the periodic-evolution pumped orbital magnetization and the orbital magnetoelectric response in insulators by revealing that these two phenomena are the only instances where the induced magnetization is gauge invariant. This theory also accounts for the electric-field induced intrinsic orbital magnetization in two-dimensional metals and Chern insulators. We illustrate the orbital magnetization pumped by microscopic local rotations of atoms, which correspond to phonon modes with angular momentum, in toy models based on honeycomb lattice, and the results are comparable to the pumped spin magnetization via strong Rashba spin orbit coupling. We also show the vital role of the orbital magnetoelectricity in validating the Mott relation between the intrinsic nonlinear anomalous Hall and Ettingshausen effects.

Berry-phase effects in dipole density and Mott relation

We provide a unified semiclassical theory for thermoelectric responses of any observable represented by an operator $\hat{\boldsymbolθ}$ that is well-defined in periodic crystals. The Einstein and Mott relations are established generally, in the presence of Berry-phase effects, for various physical realizations of $\hat{\boldsymbolθ}$ in electronic systems, including the familiar case of the electric current as well as the currently controversial cases of the spin polarization and spin current. The magnetization current, which has been proven indispensable in the thermoelectric response of electric current, is generalized to the cases of various $\hat{\boldsymbolθ}$. In our theory the dipole density of a physical quantity emerges and plays a vital role, which contains not only the statistical sum of the dipole moment of $\hat{\boldsymbolθ}$ but also a Berry-phase correction.

Boltzmann transport from density matrix theory: interband and intraband coherences

To account for the anomalous/spin Hall conductivities and spin-orbit torque in the zeroth order of electron scattering time in strongly spin-orbit coupled systems, the Boltzmann transport theory in the case of weak disorder-potentials has been augmented by adding some interband coherence effects by hand. In this work these interband coherence terms are derived systematically from analyzing the equation of motion of the single-particle density matrix in the Bloch representation. Interband elements of the out-of-equilibrium density matrix are related to only one part of interband-coherence responses. Disorder-induced off-diagonal elements of the equilibrium density matrix are shown to be vital in producing the coordinate-shift anomalous driving term in the modified Boltzmann equation. Moreover, intraband coherence is inherent in the Boltzmann equation, whose contribution to anomalous/spin Hall conductivities is parametrically the same as the interband coherence.

Conserved spin current for the Mott relation

The conserved bulk spin current [Shi et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 076604 (2006)], defined as the time derivative of the spin displacement operator, ensures automatically the Onsager relation between the spin Hall effect (SHE) and the inverse SHE. Here, we reveal another desirable property of this conserved spin current: the Mott relation linking the SHE and its thermal counterpart, the spin Nernst effect (SNE). According to the Mott relation, the SNE is known once the SHE is understood. In a two-dimensional Dirac-Rashba system with a smooth scalar disorder potential, we find a sign change of the spin Nernst conductivity when tuning the chemical potential.

Boltzmann scaling of spontaneous Hall current and nonequilibrium spin-polarization

We extend the semiclassical Boltzmann formalism for the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in nondegenerate multiband electron systems to the spin Hall effect (SHE) and unconventional Edelstein effect (UEE, cannot be accounted for by the conventional Boltzmann equation, unlike the conventional Edelstein effect). This extension is confirmed by extending the Kohn-Luttinger density-matrix transport theory in the weak disorder-potential regime. By performing Kubo linear response calculations in a prototypical multiband model, the Boltzmann scaling for the AHE/SHE and UEE is found to be valid only if the disorder-broadening of bands is quite smaller than the minimal intrinsic energy-scale around the Fermi level. Discussions on this criterion in various multiband systems are also presented. A qualitative phase diagram is proposed to show the influences of changing independently the impurity density and strength of disorder potential on the AHE/SHE and UEE.

Boltzmann approach to spin-orbit-induced transport in effective quantum theories

In model studies of the spin/anomalous Hall effect, effective Hamiltonians often serve as the starting point. However, a complete effective quantum theory contains not only the effective Hamiltonian but also the relation linking the physical observables to the canonical ones. We construct the semiclassical Boltzmann (SB) transport framework in the weak disorder-potential regime directly in the level of the effective quantum theory, and confirm this construction by formulating a generalized Kohn-Luttinger density matrix transport theory also in this level. The link and difference between the present SB theory and previous phenomenological Boltzmann, quantum kinetic and usual Kubo-Streda theories are clarified. We also present the slightly generalized Kubo-Streda formula in the level of the effective quantum theory. In this level, it is the generalized Kubo-Streda formula rather than the usual one that leads to the same physical interpretations as the present SB theory. In the application to a Rashba 2D effective model, a nonzero spin Hall effect important in the case of strong Rashba coupling but neglected in previous theories is found.

Geometric Dynamics of Magnetization: Electronic Contribution

To give a general description of the influences of electric fields or currents on magnetization dynamics, we developed a semiclassical theory for the magnetization implicitly coupled to electronic degrees of freedom. In the absence of electric fields the Bloch electron Hamiltonian changes the Berry curvature, the effective magnetic field, and the damping in the dynamical equation of the magnetization, which we classify into intrinsic and extrinsic effects. Static electric fields modify these as first-order perturbations, using which we were able to give a physically clear interpretation of the current-induced spin-orbit torques. We used a toy model mimicking a ferromagnet-topological-insulator interface to illustrate the various effects, and predicted an anisotropic gyromagnetic ratio and the dynamical stability for an in-plane magnetization. Our formalism can also be applied to the slow dynamics of other order parameters in crystalline solids.
