Growth of Hydrodynamic Perturbations in Accretion Disks: Possible Route to Non-Magnetic Turbulence

We study the possible origin of hydrodynamic turbulence in cold accretion disks such as those in star-forming systems and quiescent cataclysmic variables. As these systems are expected to have neutral gas, the turbulent viscosity is likely to be hydrodynamic in origin, not magnetohydrodynamic. Therefore MRI will be sluggish or even absent in such disks. Although there are no exponentially growing eigenmodes in a hydrodynamic disk, because of the non-normal nature of the eigenmodes, a large transient growth in the energy is still possible, which may enable the system to switch to a turbulent state. For a Keplerian disk, we estimate that the energy will grow by a factor of 1000 for a Reynolds number close to a million.

Neutrino asymmetry around black holes: Neutrinos interact with gravity

Propagation of a fermion in curved space-time generates a gravitational interaction due to coupling of its spin with the space-time curvature connection. This gravitational interaction, which is an axial-four-vector multiplied by a four gravitational vector potential, appears as a CPT violating term in the Lagrangian which generates an opposite sign and thus asymmetry between the left-handed and the right handed partners under the CPT transformation. In the case of neutrinos, this property can generate a neutrino asymmetry in the Universe. If the background metric is of the rotating black hole, i.e. the Kerr geometry, this interaction for the neutrino is non-zero. Therefore, the dispersion energy relations for the neutrino and its anti-neutrino are different which give rise to the difference in their number densities and the neutrino asymmetry in the Universe in addition to the known relic asymmetry.

Bypass to Turbulence in Hydrodynamic Accretion: Lagrangian Analysis of Energy Growth

Despite observational evidence for cold neutral astrophysical accretion disks, the viscous process which may drive the accretion in such systems is not yet understood. While molecular viscosity is too small to explain the observed accretion efficiencies by more than ten orders of magnitude, the absence of any linear instability in Keplerian accretion flows is often used to rule out the possibility of turbulent viscosity. Recently, the fact that some fine tuned disturbances of any inviscid shear flow can reach arbitrarily large transient growth has been proposed as an alternative route to turbulence in these systems. We present an analytic study of this process for 3D plane wave disturbances of a general rotating shear flow in Lagrangian coordinates, and demonstrate that large transient growth is the generic feature of non-axisymmetric disturbances with near radial leading wave vectors. The maximum energy growth is slower than quadratic, but faster than linear in time. The fastest growth occurs for two dimensional perturbations, and is only limited by viscosity, and ultimately by the disk vertical thickness. After including viscosity and vertical structure, we find that, as a function of the Reynolds number, R, the maximum energy growth is approximately 0.4 (R/log R)^{2/3}, and put forth a heuristic argument for why R > 10^4 is required to sustain turbulence in Keplerian disks. Therefore, assuming that there exists a non-linear feedback process to replenish the seeds for transient growth, astrophysical accretion disks must be well within the turbulent regime. However, large 3D numerical simulations running for many orbital times, and/or with fine tuned initial conditions, are required to confirm Keplerian hydrodynamic turbulence on the computer.

Bypass to Turbulence in Hydrodynamic Accretion Disks: An Eigenvalue Approach

Cold accretion disks such as those in star-forming systems, quiescent cataclysmic variables, and some active galactic nuclei, are expected to have neutral gas which does not couple well to magnetic fields. The turbulent viscosity in such disks must be hydrodynamic in origin, not magnetohydrodynamic. We investigate the growth of hydrodynamic perturbations in a linear shear flow sandwiched between two parallel walls. The unperturbed flow is similar to plane Couette flow but with a Coriolis force included. Although there are no exponentially growing eigenmodes in this system, nevertheless, because of the non-normal nature of the eigenmodes, it is possible to have a large transient growth in the energy of perturbations. For a constant angular momentum disk, we find that the perturbation with maximum growth has a wave-vector in the vertical direction. The energy grows by more than a factor of 100 for a Reynolds number R=300 and more than a factor of 1000 for R=1000. Turbulence can be easily excited in such a disk, as found in previous numerical simulations. For a Keplerian disk, on the other hand, similar vertical perturbations grow by no more than a factor of 4, explaining why the same simulations did not find turbulence in this system. However, certain other two-dimensional perturbations with no vertical structure do exhibit modest growth. For the optimum two-dimensional perturbation, the energy grows by a factor of ~100 for R~10^4.5 and by a factor of 1000 for R~10^6. It is conceivable that these two-dimensional disturbances might lead to self-sustained turbulence. The Reynolds numbers of cold astrophysical disks are much larger even than 10^6, therefore, hydrodynamic turbulence may be possible in disks.

Hydrodynamic Turbulence in Accretion Disks

Turbulent viscosity in cold accretion disks is likely to be hydrodynamic in origin. We investigate the growth of hydrodynamic perturbations in a small region of a disk, which we model as a linear shear flow with Coriolis force, between two parallel walls. Although there are no exponentially growing eigenmodes in this system, because of the non-normal nature of the modes, it is possible to have a large transient growth in the energy of certain perturbations. For a constant angular momentum disk, the energy grows by more than a factor of 1000 for a Reynolds number of only 1000, and so turbulence is easily excited. For a Keplerian disk, the growth is more modest, and energy growth by a factor of 1000 requires a Reynolds number of nearly a million. Accretion disks have even larger Reynolds numbers than this. Therefore, transient growth of perturbations could seed turbulence in such disks.

Scalar and Spinor Perturbation to the Kerr-NUT Spacetime

We study the scalar and spinor perturbation, namely the Klein-Gordan and Dirac equations, in the Kerr-NUT space-time. The metric is invariant under the duality transformation involving the exchange of mass and NUT parameters on one hand and radial and angle coordinates on the other. We show that this invariance is also shared by the scalar and spinor perturbation equations. Further, by the duality transformation, one can go from the Kerr to the dual Kerr solution, and vice versa, and the same applies to the perturbation equations. In particular, it turns out that the potential barriers felt by the incoming scalar and spinor fields are higher for the dual Kerr than that for the Kerr. We also comment on existence of horizon and singularity.

Chaotic behavior of micro quasar GRS 1915+105

Black hole binaries are variable in timescales of rang from months to milli-seconds. The origin of this variability is still not clear, it could be due to the variation of external parameters, like mass accretion rate, instabilities in the inner regions of the accretion flow etc. Important constraints on these possibilities can be obtained from the study of the non-linear behavior of fluctuations. We present a modified non-linear time series analysis technique which optimizes the use of the available data and computes the correlation dimension in a non-subjective manner. We apply this technique to the X-ray light-curve of the black hole system, GRS 1915+105, to show conclusively that at least for four of its twelve temporal classes, the underlying mechanism is a low order chaotic one.

Stability of accretion disk around rotating black holes

I discuss the stability of accretion disks when the black hole is considered to be rotating. I show, how the fluid properties get changed for different choices of angular momentum of black holes. I treat the problem in pseudo-Newtonian approach with a suitable potential from Kerr geometry. When the angular momentum of a black hole is considered to be significant, the valid disk parameter region affects and a disk may become unstable. Also the possibility of shock in an accretion disk around rotating black holes is checked. When the black hole is chosen to be rotating, the sonic locations of the accretion disk get shifted or disappear, making the disk unstable by means of loosing entropy. To bring the disk in a stable situation, the angular momentum of the accreting matter has to be reduced/enhanced (for co/counter-rotating disk) by means of some physical process.

Theoretical Description of kHz QPOs in accreting LMXB systems

We describe kHz QPOs from the hydrodynamical model of accretion disks for LMXB systems. Out of the pair, the higher frequency originates due to the viscous effects of an accretion disk involving the formation of shock, while the lower one is due to the Keplerian motion of accreting matter. Comparing our results with observations for two fast rotating compact stellar candidates, namely, 4U 1636-53 and KS 1731-260, we find that they match to a very good approximation.

Neutrino asymmetry in presence of gravitational interaction

Propagation of fermions in curved space-time generates a gravitational interaction due to the coupling between spin of the fermion and space-time curvature. This gravitational interaction, which is an axial-vector appears as the CPT violating term in the Lagrangian, can generate the neutrino asymmetry in Universe. If the back-ground metric is spherically asymmetric, say, of rotating black hole, the axisymmetric space-time of an expanding Universe, this interaction as well as the neutrino asymmetry is non-zero.

Scalar and spinor perturbation to the most generalised Kerr-NUT space-time

We study the scalar and spinor perturbation to Kerr-NUT space-time, that is, Klein-Gordan and Dirac equation therein. The equations are invariant under duality transformation between the gravitational electric (M) and magnetic (l) charge, radial and angular coordinate, and radial and angular component of the field. We solve the equations separating into radial and angular parts. Moreover, if sets of Klein-Gordan and Dirac equation and corresponding solutions are known for Kerr space-time, under duality transformation, those in dual Kerr space-time are shown to be achieved. A few examples of solution are shown. We comment about the horizon and singularity conditions.

Neutrino oscillations under gravity: mass independent oscillation

I discuss the possibility of neutrino oscillation in presence of gravity. In this respect I consider the propagation of neutrinos in the early phase of universe and around black holes. It is seen that whether the rest masses of a neutrino and corresponding anti-neutrino are considered to be same or not due to space-time curvature effect non-zero oscillation probability between the neutrino and anti-neutrino states comes out. Therefore I can conclude that under gravity neutrino oscillation takes place which is independent of their rest mass.

Global solution of viscous accretion disk around rotating compact objects: a pseudo-general-relativistic study

We study the solution of viscous accretion disks around rotating compact/central object having hard surface i.e. neutron star, strange star and any other highly gravitating objects. We choose pseudo-Newtonian approach to describe the relativistic accretion disk. For this purpose, the new pseudo-Newtonian potential is used which is applicable to describe the relativistic properties of star and its disk. As we know, the Hartle-Thorne metric can describe geometry of star as well as the space-time out-side of it, we use this metric for our study. This potential reproduces the marginally stable orbit exactly as that of general relativity. It also reproduces the marginally bound orbit and specific mechanical energy at the marginally stable orbit with at most 4% and 10% error respectively. Using this potential we study the global parameter space of the accretion disk. Thus, we find out the physical parameter regime, for which the stable accretion disk can be formed around gravitating object with hard surface. We show that with the change of rotation to the central object, the valid disk parameter region dramatically changes. We also show the effect of viscosity to the fluid properties of the disk. Subsequently, we give a theoretical prediction of kHz QPO, at least for one out of a pair, for a fast rotating compact object as 4U 1636-53.

Unification to the "Pseudo-General-Relativistic" analysis of accretion disks around rotating black holes and neutron stars

I analyse the relativistic accretion phenomena around rotating black holes and neutron stars in pseudo-Newtonian approach and show both the kinds of disk can be treated in an unified manner. For this purpose, number of pseudo-Newtonian potentials are in literature, applicable to describe the relativistic properties of accretion disk. While, Kerr metric is used to describe the pseudo-Newtonian potential for accretion disk around black hole, the Hartle-Thorne metric is considered to describe disk around neutron star. Two other potentials were proposed to describe the temporal effects of the accretion disk. Using these potentials, I study the global parameter space of the accretion disk around black holes and neutron stars. I show that, for different angular momenta of the compact object, the valid disk parameter region dramatically changes and disk may become unstable in certain situations. To bring it in the stable situation, the angular momentum of the accreting matter has to be reduced/enhanced (for co/counter-rotating disk) by means of some physical process. I also study, how the fluid properties get changed with different rotations of the compact objects. Moreover, I show the effect of viscosity to the fluid properties of the disk. Thus, I find out the unified physical parameter regime, for which the stable accretion disk can be formed. Subsequently, a theoretical prediction of kHz QPO is given, for a fast rotating compact object as 4U 1636-53.

Origin and interpretation of kilohertz QPOs from strange stars in X-ray binary system: theoretical hydrodynamical description

We model and interpret the Kilohertz QPOs from the hydrodynamical description of accretion disk around a rapidly rotating compact strange star. The higher QPO frequency is described by the viscous effects of accretion disk leading to shocks, while the lower one is taken to be the Keplerian motion of the accreting matter. Comparing our results with the observations for two of the fastest rotating compact stellar candidates namely, 4U~1636-53 and KS 1731-260, we find that they match to a very good approximation, thus interpreting them as strange stars.

Stability of accretion disk around rotating black holes: a pseudo-general-relativistic fluid dynamical study

We discuss the solution of accretion disk when the black hole is chosen to be rotating. We study, how the fluid properties get affected for different rotation parameters of the black hole. We know that no cosmic object is static in Universe. Here the effect of the rotation of the black hole to the space-time is considered following an earlier work of the author, where the pseudo-Newtonian potential was prescribed for the Kerr geometry. We show that, with the inclusion of rotation of the black hole, the valid disk parameter region dramatically changes and disk becomes unstable. Also we discuss about the possibility of shock in accretion disk around rotating black holes. When the black hole is chosen to be rotating, the sonic locations of the accretion disk get shifted or disappear, making the disk unstable. To bring it in the stable situation, the angular momentum of the accreting matter has to be reduced/enhanced (for co/counter-rotating disk) by means of some physical process.
