Dirichlet-Neumann Waveform Relaxation Method with Multiple Subdomains for Reaction-Diffusion Equation with a Time Delay

In this study, we present the numerical investigation of the Dirichlet-Neumann Waveform Relaxation (DNWR) algorithm applied to multiple subdomains for the reaction-diffusion equation with time delay. Various arrangements of transmission conditions between subdomains are explored and a series of numerical experiments are conducted to evaluate and compare the efficiency and effectiveness of these configurations.

Optimal Control of a Sub-diffusion Model using Dirichlet-Neumann and Neumann-Neumann Waveform Relaxation Algorithms

This paper explores the convergence behavior of two waveform relaxation algorithms, namely the Dirichlet-Neumann and Neumann-Neumann Waveform Relaxation algorithms, for an optimal control problem with a sub-diffusion partial differential equation (PDE) constraint. The algorithms are tested on regular 1D domains with multiple subdomains, and the analysis focuses on how different constant values of the generalized diffusion coefficient affect the convergence of these algorithms.

Solution of the Optimal Control Problem for the Cahn-Hilliard Equation Using Finite Difference Approximation

This paper is concerned with the designing, analyzing and implementing linear and nonlinear discretization scheme for the distributed optimal control problem (OCP) with the Cahn-Hilliard (CH) equation as constrained. We propose three difference schemes to approximate and investigate the solution behaviour of the OCP for the CH equation. We present the convergence analysis of the proposed discretization. We verify our findings by presenting numerical experiments.

Diagonalization Based Parallel-in-Time Method for a Class of Fourth Order Time Dependent PDEs

In this paper, we design, analyze and implement efficient time parallel method for a class of fourth order time-dependent partial differential equations (PDEs), namely biharmonic heat equation, linearized Cahn-Hilliard (CH) equation and the nonlinear CH equation. We use diagonalization technique on all-at-once system to develop efficient iterative time parallel methods for investigating the solution behaviour of said equations. We present the convergence analysis of Parallel-in-Time (PinT) algorithms. We verify our findings by presenting numerical results.

Linear and Nonlinear Parareal Methods for the Cahn-Hilliard Equation

In this paper, we propose, analyze and implement efficient time parallel methods for the Cahn-Hilliard (CH) equation. It is of great importance to develop efficient numerical methods for the CH equation, given the range of applicability of the CH equation has. The CH equation generally needs to be simulated for a very long time to get the solution of phase coarsening stage. Therefore it is desirable to accelerate the computation using parallel method in time. We present linear and nonlinear Parareal methods for the CH equation depending on the choice of fine approximation. We illustrate our results by numerical experiments.

Dirichlet-Neumann Waveform Relaxation Algorithm for Time Fractional Diffusion Equation in Heterogeneous Media

In this article, we have studied the convergence behavior of the Dirichlet-Neumann waveform relaxation algorithms for time-fractional sub-diffusion and diffusion wave equations in 1D \& 2D for regular domains, where the dimensionless diffusion coefficient takes different constant values in different subdomains. From numerical experiments, we first capture the optimal relaxation parameters. Using these optimal relaxation parameters, our analysis estimates the rate of change of the convergence behavior against the fractional order and time. We have performed our analysis in multiple subdomain cases for both in 1D \& 2D.

Dirichlet-Neumann and Neumann-Neumann waveform relaxation algorithms for time fractional sub-diffusion and diffusion-wave equations

In this article, we have studied the convergence behavior of the Dirichlet-Neumann and Neumann- Neumann waveform relaxation algorithms for time-fractional sub-diffusion and diffusion-wave equations in 1D & 2D for regular domains, where the dimensionless diffusion coefficient takes different constant values in different subdomains. We first observe that different diffusion coefficients lead to different relaxation parameters for optimal convergence. Using these optimal relaxation parameters, our analysis estimates the slow superlinear convergence of the algorithms when the fractional order of the time derivative is close to zero, almost finite step convergence when the order is close to two, and in between, the superlinear convergence becomes faster as fractional order increases. So, we have successfully caught the transition of convergence rate with the change of fractional order of the time derivative in estimates and verified them with numerical experiments.

Convergence of substructuring Methods for the Cahn-Hilliard Equation

In this paper, we formulate and study substructuring type algorithm for the Cahn-Hilliard (CH) equation, which was originally proposed to describe the phase separation phenomenon for binary melted alloy below the critical temperature and since then it has appeared in many fields ranging from tumour growth simulation, image processing, thin liquid films, population dynamics etc. Being a non-linear equation, it is important to develop robust numerical techniques to solve the CH equation. Here we present the formulation of Dirichlet-Neumann (DN) and Neumann-Neumann (NN) methods applied to CH equation and study their convergence behaviour. We consider the domain-decomposition based DN and NN methods in one and two space dimension for two subdomains and extend the study for multi-subdomain setting for NN method. We verify our findings with numerical results.

Pipeline Implementations of Neumann-Neumann and Dirichlet-Neumann Waveform Relaxation Methods

This paper is concerned with the reformulation of Neumann-Neumann Waveform Relaxation (NNWR) methods and Dirichlet-Neumann Waveform Relaxation (DNWR) methods, a family of parallel space-time approaches to solving time-dependent PDEs. By changing the order of the operations, pipeline-parallel computation of the waveform iterates are possible without changing the final solution. The parallel efficiency and the increased communication cost of the pipeline implementation is presented, along with weak scaling studies to show the effectiveness of the pipeline NNWR and DNWR algorithms.

Neumann-Neumann Waveform Relaxation Algorithm in Multiple subdomains for Hyperbolic Problems in 1D and 2D

We present a Waveform Relaxation (WR) version of the Neumann-Neumann algorithm for the wave equation in space-time. The method is based on a non-overlapping spatial domain decomposition, and the iteration involves subdomain solves in space-time with corresponding interface condition, followed by a correction step. Using a Fourier-Laplace transform argument, for a particular relaxation parameter, we prove convergence of the algorithm in a finite number of steps for finite time intervals. The number of steps depends on the size of the subdomains and the time window length on which the algorithm is employed. We illustrate the performance of the algorithm with numerical results, followed by a comparison with classical and optimized Schwarz WR methods.

Dirichlet-Neumann Waveform Relaxation Method for the 1D and 2D Heat and Wave Equations in Multiple subdomains

We present a Waveform Relaxation (WR) version of the Dirichlet-Neumann algorithm, formulated specially for multiple subdomains splitting for general parabolic and hyperbolic problems. This method is based on a non-overlapping spatial domain decomposition, and the iteration involves subdomain solves in space-time with corresponding interface condition, and finally organize an exchange of information between neighboring subdomains. Using a Fourier-Laplace transform argument, for a particular relaxation parameter, we present convergence analysis of the algorithm for the heat and wave equations. We prove superlinear convergence for finite time window in case of the heat equation, and finite step convergence for the wave equation. The convergence behavior however depends on the size of the subdomains and the time window length on which the algorithm is employed. We illustrate the performance of the algorithm with numerical results, and show a comparison with classical and optimized Schwarz WR methods.

Dirichlet-Neumann and Neumann-Neumann Waveform Relaxation Algorithms for Parabolic Problems

We present a waveform relaxation version of the Dirichlet-Neumann and Neumann-Neumann methods for parabolic problems. Like the Dirichlet-Neumann method for steady problems, the method is based on a non-overlapping spatial domain decomposition, and the iteration involves subdomain solves with Dirichlet boundary conditions followed by subdomain solves with Neumann boundary conditions. For the Neumann-Neumann method, one step of the method consists of solving the subdomain problems using Dirichlet interface conditions, followed by a correction step involving Neumann interface conditions. However, each subdomain problem is now in space and time, and the interface conditions are also time-dependent. Using Laplace transforms, we show for the heat equation that when we consider finite time intervals, the Dirichlet-Neumann and Neumann-Neumann methods converge superlinearly for an optimal choice of the relaxation parameter, similar to the case of Schwarz waveform relaxation algorithms. The convergence rate depends on the size of the subdomains as well as the length of the time window. For any other choice of the relaxation parameter, convergence is only linear. We illustrate our results with numerical experiments.

Dirichlet-Neumann and Neumann-Neumann Waveform Relaxation for the Wave Equation

We present a Waveform Relaxation (WR) version of the Dirichlet-Neumann and Neumann-Neumann algorithms for the wave equation in space time. Each method is based on a non-overlapping spatial domain decomposition, and the iteration involves subdomain solves in space time with corresponding interface condition, followed by a correction step. Using a Laplace transform argument, for a particular relaxation parameter, we prove convergence of both algorithms in a finite number of steps for finite time intervals. The number of steps depends on the size of the subdomains and the time window length on which the algorithms are employed. We illustrate the performance of the algorithms with numerical results, and also show a comparison with classical and optimized Schwarz WR methods.

A Time-Dependent Dirichlet-Neumann Method for the Heat Equation

We present a waveform relaxation version of the Dirichlet-Neumann method for parabolic problem. Like the Dirichlet-Neumann method for steady problems, the method is based on a non-overlapping spatial domain decomposition, and the iteration involves subdomain solves with Dirichlet boundary conditions followed by subdomain solves with Neumann boundary conditions. However, each subdomain problem is now in space and time, and the interface conditions are also time-dependent. Using a Laplace transform argument, we show for the heat equation that when we consider finite time intervals, the Dirichlet-Neumann method converges, similar to the case of Schwarz waveform relaxation algorithms. The convergence rate depends on the length of the subdomains as well as the size of the time window. In this discussion, we only stick to the linear bound. We illustrate our results with numerical experiments.
