Probing the EOS of dense neutron-rich matter with high-energy radioactive beams

Nuclear reactions induced by high energy radioactive beams create a transient state of nuclear matter with high density and appreciable neutron to proton asymmetry. This will provide a unique opportunity to explore novel properties of dense neutron-rich matter and the isospin-dependence of the nuclear equation of state (EOS). Here we study the $π^-/π^+$ ratio as a probe of the EOS of dense neutron-rich matter.

Observable effects of symmetry energy in heavy-ion collisions at RIA energies

Within an isospin-dependent transport model for nuclear reactions induced by neutron-rich nuclei, we perform a comparative study of $^{100}Sn+^{124}Sn$ and $^{100}Zn+^{124}Sn$ reactions at beam energies of 30 MeV/A and 400 MeV/A to identify optimal experimental conditions and observables for investigating the equation of state (EOS) of neutron-rich matter at RIA. Several observables known to be sensitive to the density-dependence of the symmetry energy are examined as a function of impact parameter for both reaction systems. In particular, the strength of isospin transport/diffusion is studied by using rapidity distributions of free nucleons and their isospin asymmetries. An approximate isospin equilibrium is established even for peripheral collisions with a very soft symmetry energy at 30 MeV/A. At 400 MeV/A, however, a strong isospin translucency is observed even in most central collisions with either soft or stiff symmetry energies. Origins of these observations and their implications to determining the EOS of neutron-rich matter at the Rare Isotope Accelerator (RIA) are discussed.

Light cluster production in intermediate energy heavy-ion collisions induced by neutron-rich nuclei

The coalescence model based on nucleon distribution functions from an isospin-dependent transport model is used to study the production of light clusters such as deuteron, triton, and $^{3}$He from heavy-ion collisions induced by neutron-rich nuclei at intermediate energies. It is found that the emission time of light clusters depends on their masses. For clusters with the same momentum per nucleon, heavier ones are emitted earlier. Both the yield and energy spectrum of light clusters are sensitive to the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy, with more light clusters produced in the case of a stiff symmetry energy. On the other hand, effects due to the stiffness of the isoscalar part of nuclear equation of state and the medium dependence of nucleon-nucleon cross sections on light cluster production are unimportant. We have also studied the correlation functions of clusters, and they are affected by the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy as well, with the stiff symmetry energy giving a stronger anti-correlation of light clusters, particularly for those with large kinetic energies. Dependence of light cluster production on the centrality and incident energy of heavy ion collisions as well as the mass of the reaction system is also investigated.

Isospin effects on two-nucleon correlation functions in heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energies

Using an isospin-dependent transport model, we study isospin effects on two-nucleon correlation functions in heavy-ion collisions induced by neutron-rich nuclei at intermediate energies. We find that these correlation functions are sensitive to the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy, but not to the incompressibility of symmetric nuclear matter and the medium dependence of nucleon-nucleon cross sections. This sensitivity is mainly due to effects of nuclear symmetry energy on the emission times of neutrons and protons as well as their relative emission sequence. We also study the variations of the symmetry energy effects on nucleon-nucleon correlations with respect to the impact parameter, incident energy, and mass number of heavy ion collisions.

Light clusters production as a probe to the nuclear symmetry energy

Using an isospin-dependent transport model for heavy-ion collisions induced by neutron-rich nuclei at intermediate energies, we study the production of light clusters such as deuteron, triton, and $^{3}$He via coalescence of nucleons. We find that both the yields and energy spectra of these light clusters are affected significantly by the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy, with a stiffer symmetry energy giving a larger yield.

Effect of symmetry energy on two-nucleon correlation functions in heavy-ion collisions induced by neutron-rich nuclei

Using an isospin-dependent transport model, we study the effects of nuclear symmetry energy on two-nucleon correlation functions in heavy ion collisions induced by neutron-rich nuclei. We find that the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy affects significantly the nucleon emission times in these collisions, leading to larger values of two-nucleon correlation functions for a symmetry energy that has a stronger density dependence. Two-nucleon correlation functions are thus useful tools for extracting information about the nuclear symmetry energy from heavy ion collisions.

Probing the high-density behavior of nuclear symmetry energy with high-energy radioactive beams

Central collisions induced by high energy radioactive beams can be used as a novel means to obtain crucial information about the high density ({\rm HD}) behaviour of nuclear symmetry energy. This information is critical for understanding several key issues in astrophysics. Within an isospin-dependent hadronic transport model using phenomenological equations of state ({\rm EOS}) for dense neutron-rich matter, we investigate several experimental probes of the HD behavior of nuclear symmetry energy, such as, the $π^-$ to $π^+$ ratio, neutron-proton differential flow and its excitation function. Measurements of these observables will provide the first terrestrial data to constrain stringently the HD behaviour of nuclear symmetry energy and thus also the {\rm EOS} of dense neutron-rich matter.

Isospin-Dependence of $π^-/π^+$ Ratio and Density-Dependence of Nuclear Symmetry Energy

The $π^-/π^+$ ratio is examined as a function of isospin asymmetry and beam energy for central collisions induced by neutron-rich nuclei within an isospin-dependent hadronic transport model. The $π^-/π^+$ ratio is found to increase with the isospin asymmetry, but decrease with the beam energy of the reaction. For neutron-rich systems, such as, $^{124}Sn+^{124}Sn$ and $^{132}Sn+^{124}Sn$, the sensitivity of $π^-/π^+$ ratio to nuclear symmetry energy is almost beam energy independent.

High Density Behaviour of Nuclear Symmetry Energy and High Energy Heavy-Ion Collisions

High energy heavy-ion collisions are proposed as a novel means to obtain information about the high density ({\rm HD}) behaviour of nuclear symmetry energy. Within an isospin-dependent hadronic transport model using phenomenological equations of state ({\rm EOS}) for dense neutron-rich matter, it is shown that the isospin asymmetry of the HD nuclear matter formed in high energy heavy-ion collisions is determined mainly by the HD behaviour of nuclear symmetry energy. Experimental signatures in several sensitive probes, i.e., $π^-$ to $π^+$ ratio, transverse collective flow and its excitation function as well as neutron-proton differential flow, are investigated. A precursor of the possible isospin separation instability in dense neutron-rich matter is predicted to appear as the local minima in the excitation functions of the transverse flow parameter for both neutrons and protons above the pion production threshold. Because of its {\it qualitative} nature unlike other {\it quantitative} observables, this precursor can be used as a unique signature of the isospin dependence of the nuclear {\rm EOS}. Measurements of these observables will provide the first terrestrial data to constrain stringently the HD behaviour of nuclear symmetry energy and thus also the {\rm EOS} of dense neutron-rich matter. Implications of our findings to neutron star studies are also discussed.

Nuclear modification of heavy quark fragmentation function and J/psi production in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions

In ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions, charm quark fragmentation is modified due to the melting of strings inside the high density partonic matter. D mesons produced in hadronization can further produce J/psi particles. Using a multiphase transport model, we investigate the effect on the rapidity distribution of the produced J/psi particles with two different charm quark fragmentation functions. It is shown that the J/psi rapidity distribution is sensitive to the nuclear modification of charm quark fragmentation and thus is a good indicator of the onset of string melting and the production of deconfined partonic matter.

Probing the High Density Behaviour of Nuclear Symmetry Energy with High Energy Heavy-Ion Collisions

High energy heavy-ion collisions are proposed as a novel means to constrain stringently the high density (HD) behaviour of nuclear symmetry energy. Within an isospin-dependent hadronic transport model, it is shown for the first time that the isospin asymmetry of the HD nuclear matter formed in high energy heavy-ion collisions is uniquely determined by the HD behaviour of nuclear symmetry energy. Experimental signatures in two sensitive probes, i.e., $π^-$ to $π^+$ ratio and neutron-proton differential collective flow, are also investigated.

Differential Transverse Flow in Central C-Ne and C-Cu Collisions at 3.7 GeV/nucleon

Differential transverse flow of protons and pions in central C-Ne and C-Cu collisions at a beam energy of 3.7 GeV/nucleon was measured as a function of transverse momentum at the SKM-200-GIBS setup of JINR. In agreement with predictions of a transversely moving thermal model, the strength of proton differential transverse flow is found to first increase gradually and then saturate with the increasing transverse momentum in both systems. While pions are preferentially emitted in the same direction of the proton transverse flow in the reaction of C-Ne, they exhibit an anti-flow to the opposote direction of the proton transverse flow in the reaction of C-Cu due to stronger shadowing effects of the heavier target in thr whole range of transverse momentum.

J/psi production in relativistic heavy ion collisions from a multi-phase transport model

Using A Multi-Phase Transport (AMPT) model, we study J/psi production from interactions between charm and anti-charm quarks in initial parton phase and between D and Dbar mesons in final hadron phase of relativistic heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Including also the inverse reactions of J/psi absorption by gluons and light mesons, we find that the net number of J/psi from the parton and hadron phases is smaller than that expected from the superposition of initial nucleon-nucleon collisions, contrary to the J/psi enhancement predicted by the kinetic formation model. The production of J/psi is further suppressed if one includes the color screening effect in the parton phase. We have also studied the dependence of J/psi production on the charm quark mass and the effective charm meson mass.

Probing Mechanical and Chemical Instabilities in Neutron-Rich Matter

The isospin-dependence of mechanical and chemical instabilities is investigated within a thermal and nuclear transport model using a Skyrme-type phenomenological equation of state for neutron-rich matter. Respective roles of the nuclear mean field and the 2-body stochastic scattering on the evolution of density and isospin fluctuations in either mechanically or chemically unstable regions of neutron-rich matter are investigated. It is found that the mean field dominates overwhelmingly the fast growth of both fluctuations, while the 2-body scattering influences significantly the later growth of the isospin fluctuation only. The magnitude of both fluctuations decreases with the increasing isospin asymmetry because of the larger reduction of the attractive isoscalar mean field by the stronger repuslive neutron symmetry potential in the more neutron-rich matter. Moreover, it is shown that the isospin fractionation happens later, but grows faster in the more neutron-rich matter. Implications of these results to current experiments exploring properties of neutron-rich matter are discussed.

Isospin Dependence of Mechanical and Chemical Instabilities in Neutron-Rich Matter

Within nuclear thermodynamics and an isospin-dependent transport model we investigate respective roles of the nuclear mean field and the 2-body stochastic scattering on the evolution of density and isospin fluctuations in either mechanically or chemically unstable regions of neutron-rich matter. It is found that the mean field dominates overwhelmingly the fast growth of both fluctuations, while the 2-body scattering influences significantly the later growth of the isospin fluctuation only. Moreover, both fluctuations grow in mechanically unstable systems, while only the density fluctuation grows significantly in chemically unstable ones. Furthermore, the magnitude of both fluctuations decreases with the increasing isospin asymmetry because of the larger reduction of the attractive isoscalar mean field by the stronger repuslive neutron symmetry potential in the more neutron-rich matter. Finally, several experimental measurements are proposed to test these findings.

Proton Differential Elliptic Flow and the Isospin-Dependence of the Nuclear Equation of State

Within an isospin-dependent transport model for nuclear reactions involving neutron-rich nuclei, we study the first-order direct transverse flow of protons and their second-order differential elliptic flow as a function of transverse momentum. It is found that the differential elliptic flow of mid-rapidity protons, especially at high transverse momenta, is much more sensitive to the isospin dependence of the nuclear equation of state than the direct flow. Origins of these different sensitivities and their implications to the experimental determination of the isospin dependence of the nuclear equation of state by using neutron-rich heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energies are discussed.

Multiphase transport model for heavy ion collisions at RHIC

Using a multiphase transport model (AMPT) with both partonic and hadronic interactions, we study the multiplicity and transverse momentum distributions of charged particles such as pions, kaons and protons in central Au+Au collisions at RHIC energies. Effects due to nuclear shadowing and jet quenching on these observables are also studied. We further show preliminary results on the production of multistrange baryons from the strangeness-exchange reactions during the hadronic stage of heavy ion collisions.
