Can the maximum mass of neutron stars rule out any equation of state of dense stellar matter before gravity is well understood?

Probably No! As an example, using soft EOSs consistent with existing terrestrial nuclear laboratory experiments for hybrid neutron stars containing a quark core described with MIT bag model using reasonable parameters, we show that the recently discovered new holder of neutron star maximum mass PSR J1614-2230 of $1.97\pm0.04M_{\odot}$ can be well described by incorporating a Yukawa gravitational correction that is consistent with existing constraints from neutron-proton and neutron-lead scatterings as well as the spectroscopy of antiproton atoms.

Energy release from hadron-quark phase transition in neutron stars and the axial $w$-mode of gravitational waves

Describing the hyperonic and quark phases of neutron stars with an isospin- and momentum-dependent effective interaction for the baryon octet and the MIT bag model, respectively, and using the Gibbs conditions to construct the mixed phase, we study the energy release due to the hadron-quark phase transition. Moreover, the frequency and damping time of the first axial $w$-mode of gravitational waves are studied for both hyperonic and hybrid stars. We find that the energy release is much more sensitive to the bag constant than the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy. Also, the frequency of the $w$-mode is found to be significantly different with or without the hadron-quark phase transition and depends strongly on the value of the bag constant. Effects of the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy become, however, important for large values of the bag constant that lead to higher hadron-quark transition densities.

Density slope of the nuclear symmetry energy from the neutron skin thickness of heavy nuclei

Expressing explicitly the parameters of the standard Skyrme interaction in terms of the macroscopic properties of asymmetric nuclear matter, we show in the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock approach that unambiguous correlations exist between observables of finite nuclei and nuclear matter properties. We find that existing data on neutron skin thickness $Δr_{np}$ of Sn isotopes give an important constraint on the symmetry energy $E_{sym}({ρ_{0}})$ and its density slope $L$ at saturation density ${ρ_{0}}$. Combining these constraints with those from recent analyses of isospin diffusion and double neutron/proton ratio in heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energies leads to a more stringent limit on $L$ approximately independent of $E_{sym}({ρ_{0}})$. The implication of these new constraints on the $Δr_{np}$ of $^{208}$Pb as well as the core-crust transition density and pressure in neutron stars is discussed.

Charged hadrons and nuclear parton distributions in p(d)A collisions

Nuclear gluon modifications are the least constrained component of current global fits to nuclear parton distributions, due to the inadequate constraining power of presently available experimental data from nuclear deep inelastic scattering and nuclear Drell-Yan lepton-pair production. A recent advance is the use of observables from relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions to supplement the data pool for global fits. It is thus of interest to investigate the sensitivity of various experimental observables to different strengths of nuclear gluon modifications from large to small Bjorken $x$. In this work we utilize three recent global fits with different gluon strengths to investigate the sensitivity of three observables: nuclear modification factor, pseudorapidity asymmetry, and charge ratio. We observe that both nuclear modification factor and pseudorapidity asymmetry are quite sensitive to the strength of gluon modifications in a wide pseudorapidity interval. The sensitivity is greatly enhanced at LHC (Large Hadron Collider) energies relative to that at RHIC (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider). The charge ratio is mildly sensitive only at large Bjorken x. Thus measurement of these observables in proton-lead collisions at the LHC affords the potential to further constrain gluon modifications in global fits.

Impact parameter profiles from nuclear shadowing ratio and applications to deuteron-gold collisions

While current nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) from global fits to experimental data are spatially homogeneous, many experimental observables in nucleus-nucleus collisions are presented in terms of centrality cuts. These cuts can be related to impact parameter using the Glauber theory and it is thus usual in the description of such observables to convolute an assumed impact parameter distribution with the homogeneous nPDFs. In this study we use the Gribov theory of nuclear shadowing supplemented with information from diffraction to model the impact parameter distributions of nuclear shadowing ratio in the small-$x$ region. The modeled distributions are applied to the description of the centrality dependence of observables in deuteron-gold (d+Au) collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ AGeV.

Nuclear symmetry energy and its density slope at normal density extracted from global nucleon optical potentials

Based on the Hugenholtz-Van Hove theorem, it is shown that both the symmetry energy E$_{sym}(ρ)$ and its density slope $L(ρ)$ at normal density $ρ_0$ are completely determined by the global nucleon optical potentials that can be extracted directly from nucleon-nucleus scatterings, (p,n) charge exchange reactions and single-particle energy levels of bound states. Adopting a value of $m^*/m=0.7$ for the nucleon effective k-mass in symmetric nuclear matter at $ρ_0$ and averaging all phenomenological isovector nucleon potentials constrained by world data available in the literature since 1969, the best estimates of $E_{sym}(ρ_0)=31.3$ MeV and $L(ρ_0)=52.7$ MeV are simultaneously obtained. Uncertainties involved in the estimates are discussed.

Why is the nuclear symmetry energy so uncertain at supra-saturation densities?

Within the interacting Fermi gas model for isospin asymmetric nuclear matter, effects of the in-medium three-body interaction and the two-body short-range tensor force due to the $ρ$ meson exchange as well as the short-range nucleon correlation on the high-density behavior of the nuclear symmetry energy are demonstrated respectively in a transparent way. Possible physics origins of the extremely uncertain nuclear symmetry energy at supra-saturation densities are discussed.

Isospin- and momentum-dependent effective interactions for the baryon octet and the properties of hybrid stars

The isospin- and momentum-dependent MDI interaction, which has been extensively used in intermediate-energy heavy-ion reactions to study the properties of asymmetric nuclear matter, is extended to include the nucleon-hyperon and hyperon-hyperon interactions by assuming same density, momentum and isospin dependence as for the nucleon-nucleon interaction. The parameters in these interactions are determined from the empirical hyperon single-particle potentials in symmetric nuclear matter at saturation density. The extended MDI interaction is then used to study in the mean-field approximation the equation of state of hypernuclear matter and also the properties of hybrid stars by including the phase transition from the hypernuclear matter to the quark matter at high densities. In particular, the effects of attractive and repulsive $Σ$N interactions and different values of symmetry energies on the hybrid star properties are investigated.

Transition density and pressure in hot neutron stars

Using the momentum-dependent MDI effective interaction for nucleons, we have studied the transition density and pressure at the boundary between the inner crust and liquid core of hot neutron stars. We find that their values are larger in neutrino-trapped neutron stars than in neutrino-free neutron stars. Furthermore, both are found to decrease with increasing temperature of a neutron star as well as increasing slope parameter of the nuclear symmetry energy, except that the transition pressure in neutrino-trapped neutron stars for the case of small symmetry energy slope parameter first increases and then decreases with increasing temperature. We have also studied the effect of the nuclear symmetry energy on the critical temperature above which the inner crust in a hot neutron star disappears and found that with increasing value of the symmetry energy slope parameter, the critical temperature decreases slightly in neutrino-trapped neutron stars but first decreases and then increases in neutrino-free neutron stars.

Analytical relations between nuclear symmetry energy and single-nucleon potentials in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter

Using the Hugenholtz-Van Hove theorem, we derive general expressions for the quadratic and quartic symmetry energies in terms of single-nucleon potentials in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter. These analytical relations are useful for gaining deeper insights into the microscopic origins of the uncertainties in our knowledge on nuclear symmetry energies especially at supra-saturation densities. As examples, the formalism is applied to two model single-nucleon potentials that are widely used in transport model simulations of heavy-ion reactions.

An improved single particle potential for transport model simulations of nuclear reactions induced by rare isotope beams

Taking into account more accurately the isospin dependence of nucleon-nucleon interactions in the in-medium many-body force term of the Gogny effective interaction, new expressions for the single nucleon potential and the symmetry energy are derived. Effects of both the spin(isospin) and the density dependence of nuclear effective interactions on the symmetry potential and the symmetry energy are examined. It is shown that they both play a crucial role in determining the symmetry potential and the symmetry energy at supra-saturation densities. The improved single nucleon potential will be useful for simulating more accurately nuclear reactions induced by rare isotope beams within transport models.

Nuclear limits on properties of pulsars and gravitational waves

Pulsars are among the most mysterious astrophysical objects in the Universe and are believed to be rotating neutron stars formed in supernova explosions. They are unique testing grounds of dense matter theories and gravitational physics and also provide links among nuclear physics, particle physics and General Relativity. Neutron stars may exhibit some of the most extreme and exotic characteristics that could not be found elsewhere in the Universe. Their properties are largely determined by the equation of state (EOS) of neutron-rich matter, which is the chief ingredient in calculating neutron star structure and properties of related phenomena, such as gravitational wave emission from deformed pulsars. Presently, the EOS of neutron-rich matter is still very uncertain mainly due to the poorly known density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy especially at supra-saturation densities. Nevertheless, significant progress has been made recently in constraining the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy mostly at sub-saturation densities using terrestrial nuclear reactions. While there are still some uncertainties especially at supra-saturation densities, these constraints could provide useful information on the limits of the global properties of pulsars and the gravitational waves to be expected from them. Here we review our recent work on constraining properties of pulsars and gravitational radiation with data from terrestrial nuclear laboratories.

Nuclear constraints on the core-crust transition density and pressure of neutron stars

Using the equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter that has been recently constrained by the isospin diffusion data from intermediate-energy heavy ion collisions, we have studied the transition density and pressure at the inner edge of neutron star crusts, and they are found to be 0.040 fm^{-3} <= ρ_{t}<= 0.065 fm^{-3} and 0.01 MeV/fm^{3} <= P_{t} <= 0.26 MeV/fm^{3}, respectively, in both the dynamical and thermodynamical approaches. We have further found that the widely used parabolic approximation to the equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter gives significantly higher values of core-crust transition density and pressure, especially for stiff symmetry energies. With these newly determined transition density and pressure, we have obtained an improved relation between the mass and radius of neutron stars based on the observed minimum crustal fraction of the total moment of inertia for Vela pulsar.

Incompressibility of asymmetric nuclear matter

The incompressibility $K_sat(δ)$ of isospin asymmetric nuclear matter at its saturation density. Our results show that in the expansion of $K_sat(δ)$ in powers of isospin asymmetry $δ$, i.e., $K_sat(δ)$=K_{0}+K_{sat,2}δ^{2}+K_{sat,4}δ^{4}+O(δ^{6})$, the magnitude of the 4th-order K_{sat,4} parameter is generally small. The 2nd-order K_{sat,2} parameter thus essentially characterizes the isospin dependence of the incompressibility of asymmetric nuclear matter at saturation density. Furthermore, the K_{sat,2} can be expressed as K_{sat,2}=K_{sym}-6L-J_{0}/{K_{0}L in terms of the slope parameter $L$ and the curvature parameter $K_{\mathrm{sym}}$ of the symmetry energy and the third-order derivative parameter $J_0$ of the energy of symmetric nuclear matter at saturation density, and we find the higher order $J_0$ contribution to K_{sat,2} generally cannot be neglected. Also, we have found a linear correlation between K_{sym} and $L$ as well as between $J_{0}/K_{0}$ and $K_{0}$. Using these correlations together with the empirical constraints on $K_{0}$ and $L$, the nuclear symmetry energy $E_sym(ρ_{0})$ at normal nuclear density, and the nucleon effective mass, we have obtained an estimated value of K_{sat,2}=-370 +- 120 MeV for the 2nd-order parameter in the isospin asymmetry expansion of the incompressibility of asymmetric nuclear matter at its saturation density.

Triton-3He relative and differential flows and the high density behavior of nuclear symmetry energy

Using a transport model coupled with a phase-space coalescence after-burner we study the triton-3He relative and differential transverse flows in semi-central 132Sn+124Sn reactions at a beam energy of 400 MeV/nucleon. We find that the triton-3He pairs carry interesting information about the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy. The t-3He relative flow can be used as a particularly powerful probe of the high-density behavior of the nuclear symmetry energy.

Super-soft symmetry energy encountering non-Newtonian gravity in neutron stars

Considering the non-Newtonian gravity proposed in the grand unification theories, we show that the stability and observed global properties of neutron stars can not rule out the super-soft nuclear symmetry energies at supra-saturation densities. The degree of possible violation of the Inverse-Square-Law of gravity in neutron stars is estimated using an Equation of State (EOS) of neutron-rich nuclear matter consistent with the available terrestrial laboratory data.

Nuclear constraints on the inner edge of neutron star crusts

We show that the widely used parabolic approximation to the Equation of State (EOS) of asymmetric nuclear matter leads systematically to significantly higher core-crust transition densities and pressures. Using an EOS for neutron-rich nuclear matter constrained by the isospin diffusion data from heavy-ion reactions in the same sub-saturation density range as the neutron star crust, the density and pressure at the inner edge separating the liquid core from the solid crust of neutron stars are determined to be 0.040 fm$^{-3}$ $\leq ρ_{t}\leq 0.065$ fm$^{-3}$ and 0.01 MeV/fm$^{3}$ $\leq P_{t}\leq 0.26$ MeV/fm$^{3}$, respectively. Implications of these constraints on the Vela pulsar are discussed.

Triton-$^3$He relative and differential flows as probes of the nuclear symmetry energy at supra-saturation densities

Using a transport model coupled with a phase-space coalescence after-burner we study the triton-$^3$He ratio, relative and differential transverse flows in semi-central $^{132}Sn+^{124}Sn$ reactions at a beam energy of 400 MeV/A. The neutron-proton ratio, relative and differential flows are also discussed as a reference. We find that similar to the neutron-proton pairs the triton-$^3$He pairs also carry interesting information about the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy. Moreover, the nuclear symmetry energy affects more strongly the t-$^3$He relative and differential flows than the $π^-/π^+$ ratio in the same reaction. The t-$^3$He relative flow can be used as a particularly powerful probe of the high-density behavior of the nuclear symmetry energy.
