Gouy-phase-mediated propagation variations and revivals of transverse structure in vectorially structured light

Exploring the physics and potential applications of vectorially structured light with propagation-invariant transverse structures has benefited many areas of modern optics and photonics. In this paper, we investigate the non-eigen vector modes of paraxial light fields, focusing on the propagation variations and revivals of their transverse structures, including both spatial and polarization structures. We show that the physical mechanism behind the variations and revivals of their transverse structure is linked to the evolution of the intramodal phases between the constituting spatial modes. Such evolution originates from fractional Gouy phases, or rather, Geometric-phase difference between spatial modes with different orders under a same unitary transformation. This underlying principle, provides a general guideline for shaping vectorially structured light with custom propagation-evolution properties, and may also inspire a wide variety of new applications based on structured light.

Synchronized resistance to inhomogeneous magnetic field-induced dephasing of an image stored in a cold atomic ensemble

Long-lived storage of arbitrary transverse multimodes is important for establishing a high-channel-capacity quantum network. Most of the pioneering works focused on atomic diffusion as the dominant impact on the retrieved pattern in an atom-based memory. In this work, we demonstrate that the unsynchronized Larmor precession of atoms in the inhomogeneous magnetic field dominates the distortion of the pattern stored in a cold-atom-based memory. We find that this distortion effect can be eliminated by applying a strong uniform polarization magnetic field. By preparing atoms in magnetically insensitive states, the destructive interference between different spin-wave components is diminished, and the stored localized patterns are synchronized further in a single spin-wave component; then, an obvious enhancement in preserving patterns for a long time is obtained. The reported results are very promising for studying transverse multimode decoherence in storage and high-dimensional quantum networks in the future.

Heralded generation of vectorially structured photons with high purity

Engineering vector spatial modes of photons is an important approach for manipulating high-dimension photonic states in various quantum optical experiments. In this work, we demonstrate generation of heralded single photons with well-defined vector spatial modes by using a self-locking polarizing interferometer comprising a spatial light modulator. Specifically, it is shown that, by carefully tailoring and compensating spatial and temporal amplitudes of manipulated photons, one can exactly convert ultrafast single photons into desired spin-orbit states with extremely high purity. This compact and robust device provides a versatile way for not only generation, but also manipulation and characterization of arbitrary photonic spin-orbit states.

Experimental demonstration of switching entangled photons based on the Rydberg blockade effect

The long-range interaction between Rydberg-excited atoms endows a medium with large optical nonlinearity. Here, we demonstrate an optical switch to operate on a single photon from an entangled photon pair under a Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency configuration. With the presence of the Rydberg blockade effect, we switch on a gate field to make the atomic medium nontransparent thereby absorbing the single photon emitted from another atomic ensemble via the spontaneous four-wave mixing process. In contrast to the case without a gate field, more than 50% of the photons sent to the switch are blocked, and finally achieve an effective single-photon switch. There are on average 1-2 gate photons per effective blockade sphere in one gate pulse. This switching effect on a single entangled photon depends on the principal quantum number and the photon number of the gate field. Our experimental progress is significant in the quantum information process especially in controlling the interaction between Rydberg atoms and entangled photon pairs.

Experimental demonstration of Cavity-Free Optical Isolators and Optical Circulators

Cavity-free optical nonreciprocity components, which have an inherent strong asymmetric interaction between the forward- and backward-propagation direction of the probe field, are key to produce such as optical isolators and circulators. According to the proposal presented by Xia et al., [Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 203602 (2018)], we experimentally build a device that uses cross-Kerr nonlinearity to achieve a cavity-free optical isolator and circulator. Its nonreciprocal behavior arises from the thermal motion of N-type configuration atoms, which induces a strong chiral cross-Kerr nonlinear response for the weak probe beam. We obtain a two-port optical isolator for up to 20 dB of isolation ratio in a specially designed Sagnac interferometer. The distinct propagation directions of the weak probe field determine its cross-phase shift and transmission, by which we demonstrate the accessibility of a four-port optical circulator.

Radial modal transitions of Laguerre-Gauss modes during parametric upconversion: towards the full-field selection rule of spatial modes

Optical orbital angular momentum transformation and corresponding azimuthal-mode selection rules have been studied exhaustively for various nonlinear optical interactions. However, nonlinear transformation of radial mode has not been systematically studied since the pioneering work [Phys. Rev. A 56, 4193, 1997]. In this paper, we theoretically study and experimentally verify the radial modal transitions of Laguerre-Gauss (LG) modes in parametric upconversion. Specifically, we provide a general solution that describes the sum-frequency generation (SFG) field excited by two arbitrary LG modes. Based on the solution, one can predict the full spatial complex amplitude of SFG fields upon propagation precisely and readily obtain the associated full-field selection rule including both azimuthal and radial modes. This work provides a theoretical basis for quantum and nonlinear optical research involving parametric upconversion of complex structured light, and paves the way for future work on full-field transformation of spatial modes in other nonlinear interactions.

Spatial polarization independent parametric upconversion of vectorially structured light

Spatial polarization independent (SPI) parametric conversion is the basis of many optical applications, such as SPI frequency interface for communication channels carried by vector modes and upconversion detection for polarization-resolved imaging. However, realizing such conversion remains a challenge. In this proof-of-principle work, we demonstrated SPI parametric upconversion using a polarization Sagnac nonlinear interferometer based on type-II second-harmonic generation (SHG). Our results show that the vector (including both polarization and intensity) profile and associated SOC state of the vector signal beam could be transferred to the SHG beam with a high fidelity. The principle lays a foundation of SPI frequency interface for quantum/classical channels based on vector modes and also paves the way for upconversion detection of polarization-resolved imaging in Mid-/far-infrared region.

Phase diagram and self-organising dynamics in a strongly-interacting thermal Rydberg ensemble

Abstract Far-from equilibrium dynamics that lead to self-organization are highly relevant to complex dynamical systems not only in physics, but also in life-, earth-, and social sciences. It is challenging however to find systems with sufficiently controllable parameters that allow quantitatively modelling of emergent properties. Here, we study a non-equilibrium phase transition and observe signatures of self-organized criticality in a dilute thermal vapour of atoms optically excited to strongly interacting Rydberg states. Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) provides excellent control over the population dynamics and enables high-resolution probing of the driven-dissipative dynamics, which also exhibits phase bistability. Increased sensitivity compared to previous work allows us to reconstruct the complete phase diagram including in the vicinity of the critical point. We observe that interaction-induced energy shifts and enhanced decay only occur in one of the phases above a critical Rydberg population. This limits the application of generic mean-field models, however a modified, threshold-dependent approach is in qualitative agreement with experimental data. Near threshold, we observe self-organized dynamics in the form of population jumps that return the density to a critical value.

Frequency up-conversion of an infrared image via a flat-top pump beam

The infrared imaging detection is an important and promising technology having wide applications. In this work, we report on the frequency up-conversion detection of an image based on sum frequency generation in a nonlinear crystal with a flat-top beam acting as the pump instead of a Gaussian beam, the up-converted image at 525 nm falls in the sensitive band of visible detectors and human eyes. Both theoretical simulations and the experimental results clearly demonstrate that using a flat-top beam as a pump can improve the fidelity of an image after the up-conversion compared with a Gaussian pump beam. Our scheme will be very promising for infrared image detection based on frequency up-conversion.

Vectorial nonlinear optics: type-II second-harmonic generation driven by spin-orbit coupled fields

Vectorial nonlinear optics refers to the investigation of optical processes whose nonlinear polarization (NP) undergoes spin-orbit coupling (SOC) interactions where, in general, the driving light field or the new field generated by the interaction containing the SOC property. To contribute to fundamental knowledge in this domain, we examine the type-II second harmonic generation (SHG) induced by vectorial laser modes. First, we provide a general theory to analyze the vectorial SHG process. Second, by using two typical vector modes as examples, we show how the SOC of the pump field dictates nonlinear interaction. Finally, we corroborate our theoretical predictions through experiments to confirm the crucial role of the SOC in nonlinear interactions. These results enhance our fundamental understanding of SOC-mediated nonlinear optics and lay the foundation for further fundamental studies as well as possible applications.

Full characterization of spin-orbit coupled photons via spatial-Stokes measurement

Characterization and analysis of spin-orbit coupled (SOC) states, as a measurement problem, play a vital role in research on the modern optics and photonics based on structured light. Here, we demonstrate determination of photonic SOC states via spatial-Stokes measurement, in which two spatial complex probability amplitudes of spin-dependent spatial modes within SOC states and their relative (intramode) phase can be measured directly. Compared with the standard quantum-state tomography, by avoiding wavefront-flattening operations, the apparatus can completely record photons' realistic SOC structure, leading to a more accurate and precise determination of wavefunction. This simple and general approach for SOC state determination can provide a powerful toolkit for in-situ measuring photonic SOC state, characterizing the quality of SOC light source and associated geometric-phase devices.

Classical analogy of a cat state using vortex light

Cat states are systems in a superposition of macroscopically distinguishable states; this superposition can be of either classically or quantum distinct state, regardless of the number of particles or modes involved. Here, we constructed an experimental model that simulates an optical cat state by engineering the classical orbital angular momentum of light, referred to here as an analogous cat state (a-CS). In our scheme, the behaviors of the a-CS in position space show many similarities to the quantum version of the optical cat state in phase space, for example, movement, rotation, and interference. Experimentally, the a-CS, which has two spatially localized Gaussian intensity lobes, can be evolved from "kitten" to "cat" by engineering the acquired phase hologram. Additionally, we simulated the "decoherence" of the a-CS influenced by atmospheric turbulence. The a-CS provides a reliable tool for visualizing and studying the behaviors of quantum cat states in phase space.

Generating single longitudinal mode entangled photons in telecom band via a submillimeter monolithic cavity

A high-quality, compact, and narrow-bandwidth entangled photon source (EPS) is indispensable for realization of many quantum communication protocols. Usually, a free space cavity containing a nonlinear crystal is used to generate a narrow bandwidth EPS through spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC). One major drawback is that this occupies a large space and requires complex optical and electrical control systems. Here we present a simple and compact method to generate a single-longitudinal-mode time-energy EPS via type II SPDC in a submillimeter Fabry-Perot cavity. We characterize the quality of the EPS by measuring the coincidence to accidental coincidence ratio, the two-photon time cross-correlation function and the two-photon interference fringes. All measured results clearly demonstrate that the developed source is of high quality when compared with EPSs generated using other configurations. We believe this source is very promising for applications in the quantum communication field.

Temporal Wheeler's delayed-Choice Experiment based on Cold Atomic Quantum Memory

Nowadays the most intriguing features of wave particle complementarity of single photon is exemplified by the famous Wheeler's delayed choice experiment in linear optics, nuclear magnetic resonance and integrated photonic device systems. Studying the wave particle behavior in light and matter interaction at single photon level is challenging and interesting, which gives how single photons complement in light and matter interaction. Here, we demonstrate a Wheeler's delayed choice experiment in an interface of light and atomic memory, in which the cold atomic memory makes the heralded single photon divided into a superposition of atomic collective excitation and leaked pulse, thus acting as memory beam splitters. We observe the morphing behavior between particle and wave of a heralded single photon by changing the relative proportion of quantum random number generator, the second memory efficiency, and the relative storage time of two memories. The reported results exhibit the complementarity behavior of single photon under the interface of light atom interaction.

Broad Spiral-Bandwidth of Orbital Angular Momentum Interface between Photon and Memory

The complex interactions between orbital angular momentum (OAM) light and atoms are particularly intriguing in the areas of quantum optics and quantum information science. Building a versatile high-dimensional quantum network needs broad spiral-bandwidth for preparing higher-quanta OAM mode and resolving the bandwidth mismatch in spatial space and etc. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a broad spiral-bandwidth quantum interface between photon and memory. Through twisted fields of the writing and reading, the correlated OAM distribution between photon and memory is significantly broadened. This broad spiral-bandwidth quantum interface could be spanned in multiplexing regime and could work in high-quanta scenario with capability of |l|=30, and we demonstrate the entanglement within 2-D subspace with a fidelity of 80.5\text{\textpm}4.8\% for high l. Such state-of-the-art technology to freely control the spatial distribution of OAM memory is very helpful to construct high-dimensional quantum networks and provides a benchmark in the field of actively developing methods to engineer OAM single photon from matters.

Coherent manipulation of a three-dimensional maximally entangled state

Maximally entangled photon pairs with a spatial degree of freedom is a potential way for realizing high-capacity quantum computing and communication. However, methods to generate such entangled states with high quality, high brightness, and good controllability are needed. Here, a scheme is experimentally demonstrated that generates spatially maximally entangled photon pairs with an orbital angular momentum degree of freedom via spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a nonlinear crystal. Compared with existing methods using post-selection, the technique can directly modulate the spatial spectrum of down-converted photon pairs by engineering the input pump beam. In addition, the relative phase between spatially entangled photon pairs can be easily manipulated by preparing the relative phase of input pump states.

Dynamic tomography of the spin-orbit coupling in nonlinear optics

Spin-orbit coupled (SOC) light fields with spatially inhomogeneous polarization have attracted increasing research interest within the optical community. In particular, owing to their spin-dependent phase and spatial structures, many nonlinear optical phenomena which we have been familiar with up to now are being re-examined, hence a revival of research in nonlinear optics. To fully investigate this topic, knowledge on how the topological structure of the light field evolves is necessary, but, as yet, there are few studies that address the structural evolution of the light field. Here, for the first time, we present a universal approach for theoretical tomographic treatment of the structural evolution of SOC light in nonlinear optics processes. Based on a Gedanken vector second harmonic generation, a fine-grained slice of evolving SOC light in a nonlinear interaction and the following diffraction propagation are studied theoretically and verified experimentally, and which at the same time reveal several interesting phenomena. The approach provides a useful tool for enhancing our capability to obtain a more nuanced understanding of vector nonlinear optics, and sets a foundation for further broad-based studies in nonlinear systems.

Nonlinear frequency conversion and manipulation of vector beams in a Sagnac loop

Vector beams (VBs) are widely investigated for its special intensity and polarization distributions, which is useful for optical micromanipulation, optical micro-fabrication, optical communication, and single molecule imaging. To date, it is still a challenge to realize nonlinear frequency conversion (NFC) and manipulation of such VBs because of the polarization sensitivity in most of nonlinear processes. Here, we report an experimental realization of NFC and manipulation of VBs which can be used to expand the available frequency band. The main idea of our scheme is to introduce a Sagnac loop to solve the polarization dependence of NFC in nonlinear crystals. Furthermore, we find that a linearly polarized vector beam should be transformed to an exponential form before performing the NFC. The experimental results are well agree with our theoretical model. The present method is also applicable to other wave bands and second order nonlinear processes, and may also be generalized to the quantum regime for single photons.
