Flow Simulation of Lid-Driven Rectangular Cavity by Using Lattice Boltzmann Method

Wall-driven flow in square cavity has been studied extensively, yet it is more frequently for the rectangular cavity flow occurring in practical problems, and some flow characteristics about rectangular cavity have not been fully investigated. As a promising numerical simulation tool, the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) is employed to simulate the lid-driven flow in a two-dimensional rectangular cavity in this paper. First, the code is validated for the standard square cavity, the velocity profiles, stream function values and center positions of the primary and second vortexes at different Re are presented and compared with previous researches. Then, the eddy dynamics of rectangular cavities is simulated and discussed with Reynolds number (Re) in the range of 4000-8000 and vertical to horizontal axis ratio (Ar) varied from 0.4 to 2.0, and the streamline and center migration of the primary vortex are drawn realistically for rectangular cavity. In the end, the steady, periodic, aperiodic and unstable phenomenon in the rectangular cavity is produced by LBM, Re and Ar which play the significant role in the state transition of lid-driven rectangular cavity flow are analyzed and summarized in detail. By the LBM numerical simulation with 500x(500*Ar) grid, we have discovered that the flow state in the rectangular cavity with a fixed Ar changes monotonically from stable state, periodic state to aperiodic and unstable state with the increase of Re, while the flow state in the rectangular cavity with a fixed Re varies non-monotonically with the increase of Ar. Additionally, the cycle length of periodic states varies with the change of Ar and Re.

The optimal displacement of immiscible two-phase fluids in a pore doublet

The displacement of multiphase fluid flow in a pore doublet is a fundamental problem, and is also of importance in understanding of the transport mechanisms of multiphase flows in the porous media. During the displacement of immiscible two-phase fluids in the pore doublet, the transport process is not only influenced by the capillary and viscous forces, but also affected by the channel geometry. In this paper, we first present a mathematical model to describe the two-phase fluid displacement in the pore doublet where the effects of capillary force, viscous force and the geometric structure are included. Then we derive an analytical solution of the model for the first time, and find that the displacement process is dominated by the capillary number, the viscosity ratio and the radius ratio. Furthermore, we define the optimal displacement that the wetting fluids in two daughter channels break through the branches simultaneously (both of them have the same breakthrough time), and also obtain the critical capillary number corresponding to the optimal displacement, which is related to the radius ratio of two daughter channels and viscosity ratio of two immiscible fluids. Finally, it is worthy noting that the present analytical results on the displacement in the pore doublet can be used to explain and understand the phenomenon of preferential imbibition or preferential flow in porous media.

A diffuse-interface lattice Boltzmann method for the dendritic growth with thermosolutal convection

In this work, we proposed a diffuse interface model for the dendritic growth with thermosolutal convection. In this model, the sharp boundary between the fluid and solid dendrite is replaced by a thin but nonzero thickness diffuse interface, which is described by the order parameter governed by the phase-field equation for the dendritic growth. The governing equations for solute and heat transfer are modified such that the previous special treatments for source term can be avoided. To solve the model for the dendritic growth with thermosolutal convection, we also developed a diffuse-interface multi-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann (LB) method. In this method, the order parameter in the phase-field equation is combined into the force caused by the fluid-solid interaction, and the treatment on the complex fluid-solid interface can be avoided. In addition, four LB models are developed for the phase-field equation, concentration equation, temperature equation and the Navier-Stokes equations in a unified framework. Finally, to test the present diffuse-interface LB method, we performed some simulations of the dendritic growth, and found that the numerical results are in good agreements with some previous works.

Rectangular multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann method for the Navier-Stokes and nonlinear convection-diffusion equations: General equilibrium and some important issues

In this paper, we develop a general rectangular multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann (RMRT-LB) method for the Navier-Stokes equations (NSEs) and nonlinear convection-diffusion equation (NCDE) by extending our recent unified framework of MRT-LB method [Z.H. Chai and B.C. Shi, Phys. Rev. E 102, 023306 (2020)], where a rectangular equilibrium distribution function (REDF) [J.H. Lu et al, Phil. Trans. R. Soc. A 369, 2311-2319 (2011)] on a rectangular lattice is utilized. Due to the anisotropy of discrete velocities on a rectangular lattice, the third-order moment of REDF is inconsistent with that of popular LB method, and thus the previous unified framework of MRT-LB method cannot be directly applied to the NSEs using the REDF on the rectangular rDdQq lattice. The macroscopic NSEs can be recovered from the RMRT-LB method through the direct Taylor expansion method by properly selecting the relaxation sub-matrix $\mathbf{S}_2$ which is related to kinetic viscosity and bulk viscosity. While the rectangular lattice does not lead to the change of the zero-th, first and second-order moments of REDF, thus the unified framework of MRT-LB method can be directly applied to the NCDE. It should be noted that the RMRT-LB model for NSEs can be derived on the rDdQq lattice, including rD2Q9, rD3Q19, and rD3Q27 lattices, and the RMRT-LB versions (if existed) of the previous MRT-LB models can be obtained, including those based on raw (natural)-moment, central-moment, Hermite-moment, and central Hermite-moment, respectively.

Consistent and conservative phase-field based lattice Boltzmann method for incompressible two-phase flows

In this work, we consider a general consistent and conservative phase-field model for the incompressible two-phase flows. In this model, not only the Cahn-Hilliard or Allen-Cahn equation can be adopted, but also the mass and the momentum fluxes in the Navier-Stokes equations are reformulated such that the consistency of reduction, consistency of mass and momentum transport, and the consistency of mass conservation are satisfied. We further develop a lattice Boltzmann (LB) method and show that through the direct Taylor expansion, the present LB method can correctly recover the consistent and conservative phase-field model. Additionally, if the divergence of the extra momentum flux is seen as a force term, the extra force in the present LB method would include another term which has not been considered in the previous LB models. To quantitatively evaluate the incompressibility and the consistency of the mass conservation, two statistical variables are introduced in the study of the deformation of a square droplet, and the results show that the present LB method is more accurate. The layered Poiseuille flow and a droplet spreading on an ideal wall are further investigated, and the numerical results are in good agreement with the analytical solutions. Finally, the problems of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability and dam break with the high Reynolds numbers and/or large density ratios are studied, and it is found that the present consistent and conservative LB method is robust for such complex two-phase flows.

Multiple-distribution-function lattice Boltzmann method for convection-diffusion-system based incompressible Navier-Stokes equations

In this paper, a multiple-distribution-function lattice Boltzmann method (MDF-LBM) with multiple-relaxation-time model is proposed for incompressible Navier-Stokes equations (NSEs) which are considered as the coupled convection-diffusion equations (CDEs). Through direct Taylor expansion analysis, we show that the Navier-Stokes equations can be recovered correctly from the present MDF-LBM, and additionally, it is also found that the velocity and pressure can be directly computed through the zero and first-order moments of distribution function. Then in the framework of present MDF-LBM, we develop a locally computational scheme for the velocity gradient where the first-order moment of the non-equilibrium distribution is used, this scheme is also extended to calculate the velocity divergence, strain rate tensor, shear stress and vorticity. Finally, we also conduct some simulations to test the MDF-LBM, and find that the numerical results not only agree with some available analytical and numerical solutions, but also have a second-order convergence rate in space.

A diffuse-interface lattice Boltzmann method for fluid-particle interaction problems

In this paper, a diffuse-interface lattice Boltzmann method (DI-LBM) is developed for fluid-particle interaction problems. In this method, the sharp interface between the fluid and solid is replaced by a thin but nonzero thickness transition region named diffuse interface, where the physical variables varies continuously. In order to describe the diffuse interface, we introduce a smooth function, which is similar to the order parameter in phase-field model or the volume fraction of solid phase in the partially saturated lattice Boltzmann method (PS-LBM). In addition, to depict the fluid-particle interaction more accurately, a modified force term is also proposed and included in the evolution equation of the DI-LBM. Some classical problems are used to test the DI-LBM, and the results are in good agreement with some available theoretical and numerical works. Finally, it is also found that the DI-LBM is more efficient and accurate than the PS-LBM with the superposition model.

Discrete effects on some boundary schemes of multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model for convection-diffusion equations

In this paper, we perform a more general analysis on the discrete effects of some boundary schemes of the popular one- to three-dimensional DnQq multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model for convection-diffusion equation (CDE). Investigated boundary schemes include anti-bounce-back(ABB) boundary scheme, bounce-back(BB) boundary scheme and non-equilibrium extrapolation(NEE) boundary scheme. In the analysis, we adopt a transform matrix $\textbf{M}$ constructed by natural moments in the evolution equation, and the result of ABB boundary scheme is consistent with the existing work of orthogonal matrix $\textbf{M}$. We also find that the discrete effect does not rely on the choice of transform matrix, and obtain a relation to determine some of the relaxation-time parameters which can be used to eliminate the numerical slip completely under some assumptions. In this relation, the weight coefficient is considered as an adjustable parameter which makes the parameter adjustment more flexible. The relaxation factors associated with second moments can be used to eliminate the numerical slip of ABB boundary scheme and BB boundary scheme while the numerical slip can not be eliminated of NEE boundary scheme. Furthermore, we extend the relations to complex-valued CDE, several numerical examples are used to test the relations.

A lattice Boltzmann model for the coupled cross-diffusion-fluid system

In this paper, we propose a lattice Boltzmann (LB) model for the generalized coupled cross-diffusion-fluid system. Through the direct Taylor expansion method, the proposed LB model can correctly recover the macroscopic equations. The cross diffusion terms in the coupled system are modeled by introducing additional collision operators, which can be used to avoid special treatments for the gradient terms. In addition, the auxiliary source terms are constructed properly such that the numerical diffusion caused by the convection can be eliminated. We adopt the developed LB model to study two important systems, i.e., the coupled chemotaxis-fluid system and the double-diffusive convection system with Soret and Dufour effects. We first test the present LB model through considering a steady-state case of coupled chemotaxis-fluid system, then we analyze the influences of some physical parameters on the formation of sinking plumes. Finally, the double-diffusive natural convection system with Soret and Dufour effects is also studied, and the numerical results agree well with some previous works.

A multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model based four-level finite-difference scheme for one-dimensional diffusion equation

In this paper, we first present a multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann (MRT-LB) model for one-dimensional diffusion equation where the D1Q3 (three discrete velocities in one-dimensional space) lattice structure is considered. Then through the theoretical analysis, we derive an explicit four-level finite-difference scheme from this MRT-LB model. The results show that the four-level finite-difference scheme is unconditionally stable, and through adjusting the weight coefficient $ω_{0}$ and the relaxation parameters $s_1$ and $s_2$ corresponding to the first and second moments, it can also have a sixth-order accuracy in space. Finally, we also test the four-level finite-difference scheme through some numerical simulations, and find that the numerical results are consistent with our theoretical analysis.

A finite-difference lattice Boltzmann model with second-order accuracy of time and space for incompressible flow

In this paper, a kind of finite-difference lattice Boltzmann method with the second-order accuracy of time and space (T2S2-FDLBM) is proposed. In this method, a new simplified two-stage fourth order time-accurate discretization approach is applied to construct time marching scheme, and the spatial gradient operator is discretized by a mixed difference scheme to maintain a second-order accuracy both in time and space. It is shown that the previous finite-difference lattice Boltzmann method (FDLBM) proposed by Guo [1] is a special case of the T2S2-FDLBM. Through the von Neumann analysis, the stability of the method is analyzed and two specific T2S2-FDLBMs are discussed. The two T2S2-FDLBMs are applied to simulate some incompressible flows with the non-uniform grids. Compared with the previous FDLBM and SLBM, the T2S2-FDLBM is more accurate and more stable. The value of the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy condition number in our method can be up to 0.9, which also significantly improves the computational efficiency.

A block triple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model for nonlinear anisotropic convection-diffusion equations

A block triple-relaxation-time (B-TriRT) lattice Boltzmann model for general nonlinear anisotropic convection-diffusion equations (NACDEs) is proposed, and the Chapman-Enskog analysis shows that the present B-TriRT model can recover the NACDEs correctly. There are some striking features of the present B-TriRT model: firstly, the relaxation matrix of B-TriRT model is partitioned into three relaxation parameter blocks, rather than a diagonal matrix in general multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) model; secondly, based on the analysis of half-way bounce-back (HBB) scheme for Dirichlet boundary conditions, we obtain an expression to determine the relaxation parameters; thirdly, the anisotropic diffusion tensor can be recovered by the relaxation parameter block that corresponds to the first-order moment of non-equilibrium distribution function. A number of simulations of isotropic and anisotropic convection-diffusion equations are conducted to validate the present B-TriRT model. The results indicate that the present model has a second-order accuracy in space, and is also more accurate and more stable than some available lattice Boltzmann models.

Lattice Boltzmann simulations of melting in a rectangular cavity heated locally from below at high Rayleigh number

This work presented a block triple-relaxation-time (B-TriRT) lattice Boltzmann model for simulating melting in a rectangular cavity heated from below at high Rayleigh (Ra) number (Ra = 108). The test of benchmark problem shows that present B-TriRT can dramatically reduce the numerical diffusion across the phase interface. In addition, the influences of the location of the heated region are investigated. The results indicate that the location of heated region plays an essential role in melting rate and the full melting occur earliest when the heated region is located in the middle region.

Discrete unified gas kinetic scheme for nonlinear convection-diffusion equations

In this paper, we develop a discrete unified gas kinetic scheme (DUGKS) for general nonlinear convection-diffusion equation (NCDE), and show that the NCDE can be recovered correctly from the present model through the Chapman-Enskog analysis. We then test the present DUGKS through some classic convection-diffusion equations, and find that the numerical results are in good agreement with analytical solutions and the DUGKS model has a second-order convergence rate. Finally, as a finite-volume method, DUGKS can also adopt the non-uniform mesh. Besides, we performed some comparisons among the DUGKS, finite-volume lattice Boltzmann model (FV-LBM), single-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model (SLBM) and multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model (MRT-LBM). The results show that the DUGKS model is more accurate than FV-LBM, more stable than SLBM, and almost has the same accuracy as the MRT-LBM. Besides, the using of non-uniform mesh may make DUGKS model more flexible.

Generalized lattice Boltzmann method: Modeling, analysis, and elements

In this paper, we first present a unified framework for the modelling of generalized lattice Boltzmann method (GLBM). We then conduct a comparison of the four popular analysis methods (Chapman-Enskog analysis, Maxwell iteration, direct Taylor expansion and recurrence equations approaches) that have been used to obtain the macroscopic Navier-Stokes equations and nonlinear convection-diffusion equations from the GLBM, and show that from mathematical point of view, these four analysis methods are equivalent to each other. Finally, we give some elements that are needed in the implementation of the GLBM, and also find that some available LB models can be obtained from this GLBM.

Phase-field-based lattice Boltzmann model for immiscible incompressible N-phase flows

In this paper, we develop an efficient lattice Boltzmann (LB) model for simulating immiscible incompressible $N$-phase flows $(N \geq 2)$ based on the Cahn-Hilliard phase field theory. In order to facilitate the design of LB model and reduce the calculation of the gradient term, the governing equations of the $N$-phase system are reformulated, and they satisfy the conservation of mass, momentum and the second law of thermodynamics. In the present model, $(N-1)$ LB equations are employed to capture the interface, and another LB equation is used to solve the Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations, where a new distribution function for the total force is delicately designed to reduce the calculation of the gradient term. The developed model is first validated by two classical benchmark problems, including the tests of static droplets and the spreading of a liquid lens, the simulation results show that the current LB model is accurate and efficient for simulating incompressible $N$-phase fluid flows. To further demonstrate the capability of the LB model, two numerical simulations, including dynamics of droplet collision for four fluid phases and dynamics of droplets and interfaces for five fluid phases, are performed to test the developed model. The results show that the present model can successfully handle complex interactions among $N$ ($N \geq 2$) immiscible incompressible flows.

A generalized lattice Boltzmann model for fluid flow system and its application in two-phase flows

In this paper, a generalized lattice Boltzmann (LB) model with a mass source is proposed to solve both incompressible and nearly incompressible Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations. This model can be used to deal with single-phase and two-phase flows problems with a mass source term. From this generalized model, we can not only get some existing models, but also derive new models. Moreover, for the incompressible model derived, a modified pressure scheme is introduced to calculate the pressure, and then to ensure the accuracy of the model. In this work, we will focus on a two-phase flow system, and in the frame work of our generalized LB model, a new phase-field-based LB model is developed for incompressible and quasi-incompressible two-phase flows. A series of numerical simulations of some classic physical problems, including a spinodal decomposition, a static droplet, a layered Poiseuille flow, and a bubble rising flow under buoyancy, are performed to validate the developed model. Besides, some comparisons with previous quasi-incompressible and incompressible LB models are also carried out, and the results show that the present model is accurate in the study of two-phase flows. Finally, we also conduct a comparison between quasi-incompressible and incompressible LB models for two-phase flow problems, and find that in some cases, the proposed quasi-incompressible LB model performs better than incompressible LB models.

Maxwell-Stefan theory based lattice Boltzmann model for diffusion in multicomponent mixtures

The phenomena of diffusion in multicomponent (more than two components) mixtures are very universal in both science and engineering, and from mathematical point of view, they are usually described by the Maxwell-Stefan (MS) based continuum equations. In this paper, we propose a multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann (LB) model for the mass diffusion in multicomponent mixtures, and also perform a Chapman-Enskog analysis to show that the MS based continuum equations can be correctly recovered from the developed LB model. In addition, considering the fact that the MS based continuum equations are just a diffusion type of partial differential equations, we can also adopt much simpler lattice structures to reduce the computational cost of present LB model. We then conduct some simulations to test this model, and find that the results are in good agreement with some available works. Besides, the reverse diffusion, osmotic diffusion and diffusion barrier phenomena are also captured. Finally, compared to the kinetic theory based LB models for multicomponent gas diffusion, the present model does not include any complicated interpolations, and its collision process can be still implemented locally. Therefore, the advantages of single-component LB method can also be preserved in present LB model.
