Drive by Hindsight and Foresight: Tool-Grounded Synergistic Reasoning over Hierarchical Memory for Autonomous Driving

VLMs have shown promise for autonomous driving, yet still suffer from hallucination, weak spatio-temporal perception, and limited generalization. Recent methods improve reasoning and decision-making through CoT explanations, retrieval-augmented generation or the static injection of tool outputs. Although these mechanisms enrich the context, the model neither proactively perceives scene information nor accumulates experience after answering. To overcome these limitations, we present, to our knowledge, the first synergistic framework that tightly couples hierarchical memory with proactive tool invocation in a closed reasoning loop. Our contributions are threefold. (i) Hierarchical Driving Memory: a scene-level short-term memory maintains the dynamic scene state, and an evolving long-term memory retrieves reusable experience and tool strategies. (ii) Memory-Tool Synergistic Reasoning Framework: guided by the scene state and retrieved experience, the model adaptively invokes tools to refine its reasoning at inference time and consolidates reusable experience into a long-term memory pool offline. (iii) Data Generation and Two-stage Training Pipeline: verified memory-tool trajectories built by multi-step teacher rollout are used to train with SFT and GRPO. Our 7B model reaches an overall reasoning score of 80.03 and MCQ accuracy of 79.09% on DriveLMM-o1, surpassing the strongest baseline by 7.74 MCQ points and generalizes strongly across benchmarks. Notably, ablation and analysis studies validate the effectiveness of each component and further reveal the complementary roles of hierarchical memory. Short-term memory strengthens spatio-temporal understanding, improving STSBench accuracy by 24.2 points, while offline long-term memory consolidation yields an additional 3.57-point MCQ gain with all parameters frozen, demonstrating continual self-evolution through accumulated driving experience.

BalanceRAG: Joint Risk Calibration for Cascaded Retrieval-Augmented Generation

Large language models (LLMs) can enhance factuality via retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), but applying RAG to every query is unnecessary when the model-only answer is reliable. This motivates cascaded RAG: each query is first handled by an LLM-only branch, escalated to a RAG fallback only if the primary branch is uncertain, and abstained from when neither branch is sufficiently trustworthy. However, calibrating such cascades stage by stage may be conservative, since the final utility depends on joint uncertainty thresholding of LLM-only and RAG. In this work, we develop BalanceRAG to certify threshold pairs at a target risk level. Given uncertainty scores from the two branches, BalanceRAG frames each threshold pair as an operating point on a two-dimensional lattice and identifies safe operating points using sequential graphical testing. This enables risk-adaptive threshold calibration, controlling the system-level error rate among accepted points, while retaining more examples. Furthermore, BalanceRAG extends to multi-risk calibration, allowing retrieval usage to be bounded together with the selection-conditioned risk. Experiments on three open-domain question answering (QA) benchmarks across multiple LLM backbones demonstrate that BalanceRAG meets prescribed risk levels, preserves higher coverage and more accepted correct examples, and reduces unnecessary retrieval calls compared with always-on RAG.

HyVGGT-VO: Tightly Coupled Hybrid Dense Visual Odometry with Feed-Forward Models

Dense visual odometry (VO), which provides pose estimation and dense 3D reconstruction, serves as the cornerstone for applications ranging from robotics to augmented reality. Recently, feed-forward models have demonstrated remarkable capabilities in dense mapping. However, when these models are used in dense visual SLAM systems, their heavy computational burden restricts them to yielding sparse pose outputs at keyframes while still failing to achieve real-time pose estimation. In contrast, traditional sparse methods provide high computational efficiency and high-frequency pose outputs, but lack the capability for dense reconstruction. To address these limitations, we propose HyVGGT-VO, a novel framework that combines the computational efficiency of sparse VO with the dense reconstruction capabilities of feed-forward models. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to tightly couple a traditional VO framework with VGGT, a state-of-the-art feed-forward model. Specifically, we design an adaptive hybrid tracking frontend that dynamically switches between traditional optical flow and the VGGT tracking head to ensure robustness. Furthermore, we introduce a hierarchical optimization framework that jointly refines VO poses and the scale of VGGT predictions to ensure global scale consistency. Our approach achieves an approximately 5x processing speedup compared to existing VGGT-based methods, while reducing the average trajectory error by 85% on the indoor EuRoC dataset and 12% on the outdoor KITTI benchmark. Our code will be publicly available upon acceptance. Project page: https://geneta2580.github.io/HyVGGT-VO.io.

Controlling Interface States in 1D Photonic Crystals by tuning Bulk Geometric Phases

Interface states in photonic crystals usually require defects or surface/interface decorations. We show here that one can control interface states in 1D photonic crystals through the engineering of geometrical phase such that interface states can be guaranteed in even or odd, or in all photonic bandgaps. We verify experimentally the designed interface states in 1D multilayered photonic crystals fabricated by electron beam vapor deposition. We also obtain the geometrical phases by measuring the reflection phases at the bandgaps of the PCs and achieve good agreement with the theory. Our approach could provide a platform for the design of using interface states in photonic crystals for nonlinear optic, sensing, and lasing applications
