Spin Seebeck Effect in Asymmetric Four-Terminal Systems with Rashba Spin-Orbit Coupling

We propose a new type of the spin Seebeck effect (SSE) emerging from the Rashba spin-orbit coupling in asymmetric four-terminal electron systems. This system generates spin currents or spin voltages along the longitudinal direction parallel to the temperature gradient in the absence of magnetic fields. The remarkable result arises from the breaking of reflection symmetry along the transverse direction. In the meantime, the SSE along the transverse direction, so-called the spin Nernst effect, with spin currents or spin voltages perpendicular to the temperature gradient can be simultaneously realized in our system. We further find that it is possible to use the temperature differences between four leads to tune the spin Seebeck coefficients.

Significant Reduction of Graphene Thermal Conductivity by Phononic Crystal Structure

We studied the thermal conductivity of graphene phononic crystal (GPnC), also named as graphene nanomesh, by molecular dynamics simulations. The dependences of thermal conductivity of GPnCs on both length and temperature are investigated. It is found that the thermal conductivity of GPnCs is significantly lower than that of graphene and can be efficiently tuned by changing the porosity and period length. For example, the ratio of thermal conductivity of GPnC to thermal conductivity of graphene can be changed from 0.1 to 0.01 when the porosity is changed from about 21% to 65%. The phonon participation ratio spectra reveal that more phonon modes are localized in GPnCs with larger porosity. Our results suggest that creating GPnCs is a valuable method to efficiently manipulate the thermal conductivity of graphene.

Inhomogeneous Thermal Conductivity Enhances Thermoelectric Cooling

We theoretically investigate the enhancement of thermoelectric cooling performance in thermoelectric devices made of materials with inhomogeneous thermal conductivity, beyond the usual practice of enhancing thermoelectric figure of merit ZT. The dissipation of Joule heat in such thermoelectric devices is asymmetric which can give rise to better thermoelectric cooling performance. Although the thermoelectric figure of merit and the coefficient-of-performance are only slightly enhanced, both the maximum cooling power and the maximum cooling temperature difference can be enhanced significantly. This finding can be used to increase the heat absorption at the cold end. The asymmetric dissipation of Joule heat also leads to thermal rectification.

Wave-packet rectification in nonlinear electronic systems: A tunable Aharonov-Bohm diode

Rectification of electron wave-packets propagating along a quasi-one dimensional chain is commonly achieved via the simultaneous action of nonlinearity and longitudinal asymmetry, both confined to a limited portion of the chain termed wave diode. However, it is conceivable that, in the presence of an external magnetic field, spatial asymmetry perpendicular to the direction of propagation suffices to ensure rectification. This is the case of a nonlinear ring-shaped lattice with different upper and lower halves (diode), which is attached to two elastic chains (leads). The resulting device is mirror symmetric with respect to the ring vertical axis, but mirror asymmetric with respect to the chain direction. Wave propagation along the two diode paths can be modeled for simplicity by a discrete Schrödinger equation with cubic nonlinearities. Numerical simulations demonstrate that, thanks to the Aharonov-Bohm effect, such a diode can be operated by tuning the magnetic flux across the ring.

Length-dependent thermal conductivity in suspended single-layer graphene

Graphene exhibits extraordinary electronic and mechanical properties, and extremely high thermal conductivity. Being a very stable atomically thick membrane that can be suspended between two leads, graphene provides a perfect test platform for studying thermal conductivity in two-dimensional systems, which is of primary importance for phonon transport in low-dimensional materials. Here we report experimental measurements and non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations of thermal conduction in suspended single layer graphene as a function of both temperature and sample length. Interestingly and in contrast to bulk materials, when temperature at 300K, thermal conductivity keeps increasing and remains logarithmic divergence with sample length even for sample lengths much larger than the average phonon mean free path. This result is a consequence of the two-dimensional nature of phonons in graphene and provides fundamental understanding into thermal transport in two-dimensional materials.

Exchange fluctuation theorem for heat transport between multi-terminal harmonic systems

We study full counting statistics for transferred heat and entropy production between multi-terminal systems in absence of a finite junction. The systems are modelled as collections of coupled harmonic oscillators which are kept at different equilibrium temperatures and are connected via arbitrary time dependent couplings. Following consistent quantum framework and two-time measurement concept we obtain analytical expressions for the generalized cumulant generating function. We discuss transient and steady-state fluctuation theorems for the transferred quantities. We also address the effect of coupling strength on the exchange fluctuation theorem.

Predicting market instability: New dynamics between volume and volatility

Econophysics and econometrics agree that there is a correlation between volume and volatility in a time series. Using empirical data and their distributions, we further investigate this correlation and discover new ways that volatility and volume interact, particularly when the levels of both are high. We find that the distribution of the volume-conditional volatility is well fit by a power-law function with an exponential cutoff. We find that the volume-conditional volatility distribution scales with volume, and collapses these distributions to a single curve. We exploit the characteristics of the volume-volatility scatter plot to find a strong correlation between logarithmic volume and a quantity we define as local maximum volatility (LMV), which indicates the largest volatility observed in a given range of trading volumes. This finding supports our empirical analysis showing that volume is an excellent predictor of the maximum value of volatility for both same-day and near-future time periods. We also use a joint conditional probability that includes both volatility and volume to demonstrate that invoking both allows us to better predict the largest next-day volatility than invoking either one alone.

Robust acoustic cloaking with density-near-zero materials

Using the phenomenon of extraordinary sound transmission (EST) through artificially constructed density-near-zero (DNZ) materials, we propose an alternative approach to realize a very robust acoustic cloaking, which includes one absorber and one projector connected by an energy channel. The elementary unit cell is made of one single-piece homogeneous copper, but it well maintains both the original planar wavefront and the nearly perfect one-dimensional transmission, in the presence of any inserted objects. Furthermore, the overall cloaked space can be increased, designed, and distributed by arbitrarily assembling additional DNZ cells without any upper limit in the total cloaking volume. We demonstrate acoustic cloaking by different combinations of DNZ cells in free space as well as in acoustic waveguides, which enables any objects inside the cells imperceptible along undistorted sound paths.

Anomalous Heat Diffusion

Consider anomalous energy spread in solid phases, i.e., $MSD= \int (x -{\langle x \rangle}_E)^2 ρ_E(x,t)dx \propto t^β$, as induced by a small initial excess energy perturbation distribution $ρ_{E}(x,t=0)$ away from equilibrium. The associated total thermal equilibrium heat flux autocorrelation function $C_{JJ}(t)$ is shown to obey rigorously the intriguing relation, $d^2 MSD/dt^2 = 2C_{JJ}(t)/(k_BT^2c)$, where $c$ is the specific volumetric heat capacity. Its integral assumes a time-local Helfand-moment relation; i.e. $ dMSD/dt|_{t=t_s} = 2/(k_BT^2c)\int_0^{t_s} C_{JJ}(s)ds$, where the chosen cut-off time $t_s$ is determined by the maximal signal velocity for heat transfer. Given the premise that the averaged nonequilibrium heat flux is governed by an anomalous heat conductivity, energy diffusion scaling determines a corresponding anomalous thermal conductivity scaling behaviour.

Thermal Interface Conductance between Aluminum and Silicon by Molecular Dynamics Simulations

The thermal interface conductance between Al and Si was simulated by a non-equilibrium molecular dynamics method. In the simulations, the coupling between electrons and phonons in Al are considered by using a stochastic force. The results show the size dependence of the interface thermal conductance and the effect of electron-phonon coupling on the interface thermal conductance. To understand the mechanism of interface resistance, the vibration power spectra are calculated. We find that the atomic level disorder near the interface is an important aspect of interfacial phonon transport, which leads to a modification of the phonon states near the interface. There, the vibrational spectrum near the interface greatly differs from the bulk. This change in the vibrational spectrum affects the results predicted by AMM and DMM theories and indicates new physics is involved with phonon transport across interfaces. Keywords:

Validity of Fourier's law in one-dimensional momentum-conserving lattices with asymmetric interparticle interactions

We have numerically studied heat conduction in a few one-dimensional momentum-conserving lattices with asymmetric interparticle interactions by the nonequilibrium heat bath method, the equilibrium Green-Kubo method, and the heat current power spectra analysis. Very strong finite-size effects are clearly observed. Such effects make the heat conduction obey a Fourier-like law in a wide range of lattice lengths. However, in yet longer lattice lengths, the heat conductivity regains its power-law divergence. Therefore the power-law divergence of the heat conductivity in the thermodynamic limit is verified, as is expected by many existing theories.

Extreme Low Thermal Conductivity in Nanoscale 3D Si Phononic Crystal with Spherical Pores

Thermoelectric material provides a high hope for converting harmful and useless heat into useful energy, electricity. It can also be used as solid state Peltier coolers in integrated circuits, an outstanding challenge for electronic engineers. The desire for a high efficient thermoelectric material has never been so keen. Although many works have been done, we are still far from having a recipe for thermoelectric materials. Nano-structuring provides an effective way to increase figure of merit (ZT) by reducing the thermal conductivity without affecting electronic property.1 Here, we propose a novel nanoscale three-dimensional (3D) Si phononic crystal (PnC) with spherical pores, which can reduce the thermal conductivity of bulk Si by a factor up to 10,000 times at room temperature. The extreme-low thermal conductivity could lead to a larger value of ZT than unity. The thermal conductivity changes little when temperature increases from room temperature to 1100 K. The phonon participation ratio spectra show there are more phonon localizations as the porosity of PnC increases.

Thermal transport across metal-insulator interface via electron-phonon interaction

The thermal transport across metal-insulator interface can be characterized by electron-phonon interaction through which an electron lead is coupled to a phonon lead if phonon-phonon coupling at the interface is very weak. We investigate the thermal conductance and rectification flowing between the electron part and the phonon part using nonequilibrium Green's function method. It is found that the thermal conductance has a nonmonotonic behavior as a function of average temperature or the coupling strength between the phonon leads in the metal part and the insulator one. The metal-insulator interface shows evident thermal rectification effect, which can reverse with changing of average temperature or the electron-phonon coupling.

Nonlinearity enhanced interfacial thermal conductance and rectification

We study the nonlinear interfacial thermal transport across atomic junctions by the quantum self-consistent mean field (QSCMF) theory based on nonequilibrium Green's function approach; the QSCMF theory we propose is very precise and matches well with the exact results from quantum master equations. The nonlinearity at the interface is studied by effective temperature dependent interfacial coupling calculated from the QSCMF theory. We find that nonlinearity can provide an extra channel for phonon transport in addition to the phonon scattering which usually blocks heat transfer. For weak linearly coupled interface, the nonlinearity can enhance the interfacial thermal transport; with increasing nonlinearity or temperature, the thermal conductance shows nonmonotonical behavior. The interfacial nonlinearity also induces thermal rectification, which depends on the mismatch of the two leads and also the interfacial linear coupling.

Cumulants of heat transfer across nonlinear quantum systems

We consider thermal conduction across a general nonlinear phononic junction. Based on two-time observation protocol and the field theoretical/algebraic method, the cumulants of the heat transferred in both transient and steady-state regimes are studied on an equal footing, and practical formulae for the calculation of the cumulant generating function of heat transfer are obtained. As an application, the developed general formalism is used to study anharmonic effects on fluctuation of steady-state heat transfer across a single-site junction with a quartic nonlinear on-site pinning potential. An explicit nonlinear modification to cumulant generating function exact up to the first order is given, in which Gallavotti-Cohen fluctuation symmetry is verified. Numerically a self-consistent procedure is introduced, which works well for strong nonlinearity.

Bilayer Isotropic Thermal Cloak

Invisibility has attracted intensive research in various communities, e.g., optics, electromagnetics, acoustics, thermodynamics, etc. However, the most of them have only been experimentally achieved by virtue of simplified approaches due to their inhomogeneous and extreme parameters imposed by transformation-optic method, and usually require challenging realization with metamaterials. In this paper, we demonstrate an advanced bilayer thermal cloak with naturally available materials first time. This scheme, directly from thermal conduction equation, has been validated as an exact cloak rather than a reduced one, and we experimentally confirmed its perfect performance (heat-front maintenance and heat protection) in an actual setup. The proposed scheme may open a new avenue to control the diffusive heat flow in ways inconceivable with phonons.

Topological Magnon Insulator in Insulating Ferromagnet

In the ferromagnetic insulator with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, we theoretically predict and numerically verify a topological magnon insulator, where the charge-free magnon is topologically protected to transport along the edge while it is insulating in the bulk. Within the bulk band gaps, edge states form a connected loop as a $4π$- or $8π$-period Möbius strip in the wave vector space. As a consequence, the chiral energy current traveling along the corresponding edge is topologically protected from defects or disorders. Using the nonequilibrium Green's function method, we demonstrate that the energy current carried by magnons with energy in the bulk gap localizes at edges and prefers to travel along one edge in only one direction at nonequilibrium steady state. Our prediction about topological magnon insulator could be observed at a wide energy range in the thin film of the insulating ferromagnet, such as Lu$_2$V$_2$O$_7$.

Classical Heat Transport in Anharmonic Molecular Junctions: Exact Solutions

We study full counting statistics for classical heat transport through anharmonic/nonlinear molecular junctions formed by interacting oscillators. Analytical result of the steady state heat flux for an overdamped anharmonic junction with arbitrary temperature bias is obtained. It is found that the thermal conductance can be expressed in terms of temperature dependent effective force constant. The role of anharmonicity is identified. We also give the general formula for the second cumulant of heat in steady state, as well as the average geometric heat flux when two temperatures are modulated adiabatically. We present an anharmonic example for which all cumulants for heat can be obtained exactly. For a bounded single oscillator model with mass we found that the cumulants are independent of the nonlinear potential.
