Thermodynamic stability of small-world oscillator networks: A case study of proteins

We study vibrational thermodynamic stability of small-world oscillator networks, by relating the average mean-square displacement $S$ of oscillators to the eigenvalue spectrum of the Laplacian matrix of networks. We show that the cross-links suppress $S$ effectively and there exist two phases on the small-world networks: 1) an unstable phase: when $p\ll1/N$, $S\sim N$; 2) a stable phase: when $p\gg1/N$, $S\sim p^{-1}$, \emph{i.e.}, $S/N\sim E_{cr}^{-1}$. Here, $p$ is the parameter of small-world, $N$ is the number of oscillators, and $E_{cr}=pN$ is the number of cross-links. The results are exemplified by various real protein structures that follow the same scaling behavior $S/N\sim E_{cr}^{-1}$ of the stable phase. We also show that it is the "small-world" property that plays the key role in the thermodynamic stability and is responsible for the universal scaling $S/N\sim E_{cr}^{-1}$, regardless of the model details.

Steering Bose-Einstein condensates despite time symmetry

A Bose-Einstein condensate in an oscillating spatially asymmetric potential is shown to exhibit a directed current for unbiased initial conditions despite time symmetry. This phenomenon occurs only if the interaction between atoms, treated in mean-field approximation, exceeds a critical value. Our findings can be described with a three-mode model (TMM). These TMM results corroborate well with a many-body study over a time scale which increases with increasing atom number. The duration of this time scale probes the validity of the used mean-field approximation.

Thermal conductivity of one-dimensional lattices with self-consistent heat baths: a heuristic derivation

We derive the thermal conductivities of one-dimensional harmonic and anharmonic lattices with self-consistent heat baths (BRV lattice) from the Single-Mode Relaxation Time (SMRT) approximation. For harmonic lattice, we obtain the same result as previous works. However, our approach is heuristic and reveals phonon picture explicitly within the heat transport process. The results for harmonic and anharmonic lattices are compared with numerical calculations from Green-Kubo formula. The consistency between derivation and simulation strongly supports that effective (renormalized) phonons are energy carriers in anharmonic lattices although there exist some other excitations such as solitons and breathers.

Symmetry Breaking and Self-trapping of a Dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensate in a Double-well Potential

The quantum self-trapping phenomenon of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) represents a remarkable nonlinear effect of wide interest. By considering a purely dipolar BEC in a double-well potential, we study how the dipole orientation affects the ground state structure and the transition between self-trapping and Josephson oscillation in dynamics. Three-dimensional numerical results and an effective two-mode model demonstrate that the onset of self-trapping of a dipolar BEC can be radically modified by the dipole orientation. We also analyze the failure of the two-mode model in predicting the rate of Josephson oscillations. We hope that our results can motivate experimental work as well as future studies of self-trapping of ultracold dipolar gases in optical lattices.

Ratcheting Heat Flux against a Thermal Bias

Merely rocking the temperature in one heat bath can direct a steady heat flux from cold to hot against a non-zero thermal bias in stylized nonlinear lattice junctions that are sandwiched between two heat baths. Likewise, for an average zero-temperature difference between the two contacts a net, ratchet-like heat flux emerges. Computer simulations show that this very heat flux can be controlled and reversed by suitably tailoring the frequency ($\lesssim$ 100 MHz) of the alternating temperature field.

Ballistic magneto-thermal transport in a Heisenberg spin chain at low temperatures

We study ballistic thermal transport in Heisenberg spin chain with nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic interactions at low temperatures. Explicit expressions for transmission coefficients are derived for thermal transport in a periodic spin chain of arbitrary junction length by a spin-wave model. Our analytical results agree very well with the ones from nonequilibrium Green's function method. Our study shows that the transmission coefficient oscillates with the frequency of thermal wave. Moreover, the thermal transmission shows strong dependence on the intrachain coupling, the length of the spin chain, and the external magnetic field. The results demonstrate the possibility of manipulating spin-wave propagation and magnetothermal conductance in the spin-chain junction by adjusting the intrachain coupling and/or the external magnetic field.

Thermal memory: a storage of phononic information

Memory is an indispensable element for computer besides logic gates. In this Letter we report a model of thermal memory. We demonstrate via numerical simulation that thermal (phononic) information stored in the memory can be retained for a long time without being lost and more importantly can be read out without being destroyed. The possibility of experimental realization is also discussed.

Control of heat transport in quantum spin systems

We study heat transport in quantum spin systems analytically and numerically. First, we demonstrate that heat current through a two-level quantum spin system can be modulated from zero to a finite value by tuning a magnetic field. Second, we show that a spin system, consisting of two dissimilar parts - one is gapped and the other is gapless, exhibits current rectification and negative differential thermal resistance. Possible experimental realizations by using molecular junctions or magnetic materials are discussed.

Nonequilibrium Green's function method for phonon-phonon interaction and ballistic-diffusive thermal transport

Phonon-phonon interaction is systematically studied by nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) formulism in momentum space at finite temperatures. Within the quasi-particle approximation, phonon frequency shift and lifetime are obtained from the retarded self-energy. The lowest order NEGF provides the same phonon lifetime as Fermi's golden rule. Thermal conductance is predicted by the Landauer formula with a phenomenological transmission function. The main advantage of our method is that it covers both ballistic and diffusive limits and thermal conductance of different system sizes can be easily obtained once the mode-dependent phonon mean free path is calculated by NEGF. As an illustration, the method is applied to two one-dimensional atom chain models (the FPU-βmodel and the ϕ^4 model) with an additional harmonic on-site potential. The obtained thermal conductance is compared with that from a quasi-classical molecular dynamics method. The harmonic on-site potential is shown to remove the divergence of thermal conductivity in the FPU-βmodel.

Heat conduction in a 1D harmonic chain with three dimensional vibrations

We study vibrational energy transport in a quasi 1-D harmonic chain with both longitudinal and transverse vibrations. We demonstrate via both numerical simulation and theoretic analysis that for 1-D atomic chain connected by 3D harmonic springs, the coefficient of heat conduction changes it continuously with its lattice constant, indicating the qualitative difference from the corresponding 1-D case where the coefficient is independent of the lattice constant.

Stability of Fock states in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate with a regular classical counterpart

We study the stability of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in the parameter regime in which its classical counterpart has regular motion. The stability is characterized by the fidelity for both the same and different initial states. We study as initial states the Fock states with definite numbers of atoms in each component of the BEC. It is found that for some initial times the two Fock states with all the atoms in the same component of the BEC are stabler than Fock states with atoms distributed in the two components. An experimental scheme is discussed, in which the fidelity can be measured in a direct way.

Thermal rectifier from deformed carbon nanohorns

We study thermal rectification in single-walled carbon nanohorns (SWNHs) by using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (MD) method. It is found that the horns with the bigger top angles show larger asymmetric heat transport due to the larger structural gradient distribution. This kind of gradient behavior can be further adjusted by applying external strain on the SWNHs. After being carefully elongated along the axial direction, the thermal rectification in the elongated SWNHs can become more obvious than that in undeformed ones. The maximum rectification efficiency of SWNHs is much bigger than that of carbon nanotube intramolecular junctions.

Self-affine Fractals Embedded in Spectra of Complex Networks

The scaling properties of spectra of real world complex networks are studied by using the wavelet transform. It is found that the spectra of networks are multifractal. According to the values of the long-range correlation exponent, the Hust exponent $H$, the networks can be classified into three types, namely, $H>0.5$, $H=0.5$ and $H<0.5$. All real world networks considered belong to the class of $H \ge 0.5$, which may be explained by the hierarchical properties.

Thermal transistor: Heat flux switching and modulating

Thermal transistor is an efficient heat control device which can act as a heat switch as well as a heat modulator. In this paper, we study systematically one-dimensional and two-dimensional thermal transistors. In particular, we show how to improve significantly the efficiency of the one-dimensional thermal transistor. The study is also extended to the design of two-dimensional thermal transistor by coupling different anharmonic lattices such as the Frenkel-Kontorova and the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam lattices. Analogy between anharmonic lattices and single-walled carbon nanotube is drawn and possible experimental realization with multi-walled nanotube is suggested.

Heat conduction in simple networks: The effect of inter-chain coupling

The heat conduction in simple networks consisting of different one dimensional nonlinear chains is studied. We find that the coupling between chains has different function in heat conduction compared with that in electric current. This might find application in controlling heat flow in complex networks.

Dynamics of matter-wave solitons in a ratchet potential

We study the dynamics of bright solitons formed in a Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive atomic interactions perturbed by a weak bichromatic optical lattice potential. The lattice depth is a biperiodic function of time with a zero mean, which realises a flashing ratchet for matter-wave solitons. The average velocity of a soliton and the directed soliton current induced by the ratchet depend on the number of atoms in the soliton. We employ this feature to study collisions between ratchet-driven solitons and find that soliton transport can be induced through their interactions. In the regime when matter-wave solitons are narrow compared to the lattice period the ratchet dynamics is well described by the effective Hamiltonian theory.

Entanglement-induced Decoherence and Energy Eigenstates

Using recent results in the field of quantum chaos we derive explicit expressions for the time scale of decoherence induced by the system-environment entanglement. For a generic system-environment interaction and for a generic quantum chaotic system as environment, conditions are derived for energy eigenstates to be preferred states in the weak coupling regime. A simple model is introduced to numerically confirm our predictions. The results presented here may also help understanding the dynamics of quantum entanglement generation in chaotic quantum systems.

Ultralow Thermal Conductivity of Isotope-Doped Silicon Nanowires

The thermal conductivity of silicon nanowires (SiNWs) is investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. It is found that the thermal conductivity of SiNWs can be reduced exponentially by isotopic defects at room temperature. The thermal conductivity reaches the minimum, which is about 27% of that of pure 28Si NW, when doped with fifty percent isotope atoms. The thermal conductivity of isotopic-superlattice structured SiNWs depends clearly on the period of superlattice. At a critical period of 1.09 nm, the thermal conductivity is only 25% of the value of pure Si NW. An anomalous enhancement of thermal conductivity is observed when the superlattice period is smaller than this critical length. The ultra-low thermal conductivity of superlattice structured SiNWs is explained with phonon spectrum theory.
