Open quantum system approach for heavy quark thermalization

We treat heavy quark as an open quantum system in the hot medium and rederive the Stochastic Schrödinger Equation (SSE) from the full Schrödinger equation for both heavy quarks and the medium. We apply the SSE to the dynamical evolutions of heavy quarks (as a system) in the static hot medium (as an environment). Heavy quarks interact with the medium via random scatterings, which exchange the momentum and phase factor randomly between two wave functions of the system and the environment. The exchange of momentum and phase factor results in the transition between different eigenstates of the system. These are included via an external stochastic potential in the Hamiltonian of SSE. Stochastic wave functions of heavy quarks are evolved with the stochastic external potential. The mean wave functions and the corresponding momentum distributions of heavy quarks are obtained after the ensemble average over a large set of stochastic wave functions. We present the thermalization of heavy quarks in the static medium with different coupling strength.

Charmonium Triangular Flow in High Energy Nuclear Collisions

We calculate, for the first time, $J/ψ$ triangular flow in high energy nuclear collisions. The charmonium motion in medium is controlled by a transport equation with loss and gain terms, and the evolution of the hot medium is governed by a single-shot hydrodynamic equation with a triangularly deformed initial condition. In comparison with the elliptic flow $v_2$, the triangular flow $v_3$ comes almost completely from the charmonium regeneration in the quark gluon plasma and therefore is more sensitive to the medium properties.

Hadronic effects on charmonium elliptic flows in heavy-ion collisions

Transport and Langevin equations are employed to study hadronic medium effects on charmonium elliptic flows in heavy-ion collisions. In Pb-Pb collisions, the anisotropic energy density of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in the transverse plane is transformed into hadron momentum anisotropy after the phase transition. Charmonia with high transverse momentum $p_T$ are produced via the primordial hard process and undergo different degrees of dissociation along different paths in the QGP. They then scatter with light hadrons in the hadron phase. Both contributions to the charmonium elliptic flows are studied at moderate and high transverse momenta. The elliptic flows of the prompt $J/ψ$ are found to be considerably enhanced at high transverse momentum when the charmonium diffusion coefficients in the hadronic medium are parametrized through the geometry scale approximation. This hadronic medium effect is negligible for quarkonia with larger mass such as bottomonia.

Gravitational-wave echoes from spinning exotic compact objects: numerical waveforms from the Teukolsky equation

We present numerical waveforms of gravitational-wave echoes from spinning exotic compact objects (ECOs) that result from binary black hole coalescence. We obtain these echoes by solving the Teukolsky equation for the $ψ_4$ associated with gravitational waves that propagate toward the horizon of a Kerr spacetime, and process the subsequent reflections of the horizon-going wave by the surface of the ECO, which lies right above the Kerr horizon. The trajectories of the infalling objects are modified from Kerr geodesics, such that the gravitational waves propagating toward future null infinity match those from merging black holes with comparable masses. In this way, the corresponding echoes approximate to those from comparable-mass mergers. For boundary conditions at the ECO surface, we adopt recent work using the membrane paradigm, which relates $ψ_0$ associated with the horizon-going wave and $ψ_4$ of the wave that leaves the ECO surface. We obtain $ψ_0$ of the horizon-going wave from $ψ_4$ using the Teukolsky-Starobinsky relation. The echoes we obtain turn out to be significantly weaker than those from previous studies that generate echo waveforms by modeling the ringdown part of binary black hole coalescence waveforms as originating from the past horizon.

Constraints on low-energy effective theories from weak cosmic censorship

We examine the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) for the extremal charged black hole in possible generalizations of Einstein-Maxwell theory due to the higher order corrections, up to fourth-derivative terms. Our derivation is based on Wald's gedanken experiment to destroy an extremal black hole. We find that, provided the null energy condition for the falling matter, the WCCC is preserved for all possible generalizations. Thus, the WCCC cannot serve as a constraint to the higher order effective theories. We also show that up to first order variations of black hole mass and charge, WCCC is preserved for non-rotating extremal black holes in all $n$-dimensional diffeomorphism-covariant theories of gravity and $U(1)$ gauge field.

Tidal response and near-horizon boundary conditions for spinning exotic compact objects

Teukolsky equations for $|s|=2$ provide efficient ways to solve for curvature perturbations around Kerr black holes. Imposing regularity conditions on these perturbations on the future (past) horizon corresponds to imposing an in-going (out-going) wave boundary condition. For exotic compact objects (ECOs) with external Kerr spacetime, however, it is not yet clear how to physically impose boundary conditions for curvature perturbations on their boundaries. We address this problem using the Membrane Paradigm, by considering a family of fiducial observers (FIDOs) that float right above the horizon of a linearly perturbed Kerr black hole. From the reference frame of these observers, the ECO will experience tidal perturbations due to in-going gravitational waves, respond to these waves, and generate out-going waves. As it also turns out, if both in-going and out-going waves exist near the horizon, the Newman Penrose (NP) quantity $ψ_0$ will be numerically dominated by the in-going wave, while the NP quantity $ψ_4$ will be dominated by the out-going wave. In this way, we obtain the ECO boundary condition in the form of a relation between $ψ_0$ and the complex conjugate of $ψ_4$, in a way that is determined by the ECO's tidal response in the FIDO frame. We explore several ways to modify gravitational-wave dispersion in the FIDO frame, and deduce the corresponding ECO boundary condition for Teukolsky functions. We subsequently obtain the boundary condition for $ψ_4$ alone, as well as for the Sasaki-Nakamura and Detweiler's functions. As it also turns out, reflection of spinning ECOs will generically mix between different $\ell$ components of the perturbations fields, and be different for perturbations with different parities. We also apply our boundary condition to computing gravitational-wave echoes from spinning ECOs, and solve for the spinning ECOs' quasi-normal modes.

Gedanken Experiments to Destroy a BTZ Black Hole

We consider gedanken experiments to destroy an extremal or near-extremal BTZ black hole by throwing matter into the horizon. These black holes are vacuum solutions to (2+1)-dimensional gravity theories, and are asymptotically $\mathrm{AdS}_3$. Provided the null energy condition for the falling matter, we prove the following---(i) in a Mielke-Baekler model without ghost fields, when torsion is present, an extremal BTZ black hole can be overspun and becomes a naked conical singularity; (ii) in 3-dimensional Einstein gravity and chiral gravity, which both live in torsionless limits of Mielke-Baekler model, an extremal BTZ black hole cannot be overspun; and (iii) in both Einstein gravity and chiral gravity, a near-extremal BTZ black hole cannot be overspun, leaving the weak cosmic censorship preserved. To obtain these results, we follow the analysis of Sorce and Wald on their gedanken experiments to destroy a Kerr-Newman black hole, and calculate the second order corrections to the black hole mass. Furthermore, Wald's type of gedanken experiment provides an operational procedure of proving the third law of black hole mechanics. Through the AdS/CFT correspondence, our results on BTZ black holes also indicate that a third law of thermodynamics holds for the holographic conformal field theories dual to 3-dimensional Einstein gravity and chiral gravity.

Critical temperature of deconfinement in a constrained space using a bag model at vanishing baryon density

The geometry of fireballs in relativistic heavy ion collisions is approximated by a static box, which is infinite in two directions while finite in the other direction. The critical temperature of deconfinement phase transition is calculated explicitly in the MIT bag model at vanishing baryon density. It is found that the critical temperature shifts to a value higher than that in an unconstrained space.

Fast Heating Dissociation of Upsilon(1S) in Heavy Ion Collisions at RHIC

With the adiabatic assumption in the cooling process, we discussed a new mechanism on Upsilon(1S) suppression that is due to the fast heating process at the early stage of the fireball instead of its finite decay width in finite temperature medium produced in the heavy ion collisions. We calculated the transition probability after the fast heating dissociation as a function of the temperature of the medium and the nuclear modification factor in central collisions, and found that the suppression is not negligible at RHIC, even if the width of Upsilon(1S) vanishes.

Probe the tilted Quark-Gluon Plasma with charmonium directed flow

Charmonium directed flows are studied based on transport model coupled with the realistic three dimensional expansions of the bulk medium. The non-central symmetric nucleus-nucleus collisions can generate the rotating quark-gluon plasma (QGP) with symmetry-breaking longitudinal distributions. In $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV Au-Au semi-central collisions, charmonium are primordially produced in the initial hard process, they are mainly dissociated by the initial tilted source with high temperatures and then move out of the bulk medium to keep the early information of the medium. Charmonia are less affected by the hydrodynamic expansions of QGP where its tilted shape is being diluted. This biased dissociation can generate directed flows of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ which are much larger than the values of light charged hadrons and open heavy flavor. They are sensitive and clean to the effect of QGP rapidity-odd initial energy densities.

Thermal Production of Charmonia at the LHC Energies

This work studies the thermal production of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ with Boltzmann transport model in the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) produced in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV Pb-Pb collisions. $J/ψ$ nuclear modification factors are studied in details with the mechanisms of primordial production and the recombination of charm and anti-charm quarks in the thermal medium. $ψ(2S)$ binding energy is much smaller in the hot medium compared with the ground state, so $ψ(2S)$ with middle and low $p_T$ can be mainly thermally regenerated in the later stage of QGP expansions which enables $ψ(2S)$ inherit larger collective flows from the bulk medium. We quantitatively study both nuclear modification factors of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ in different centralities and transverse momentum bins in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV Pb-Pb collisions.

Instability of exotic compact objects and its implications for gravitational-wave echoes

Exotic compact objects (ECOs) have recently become an exciting research subject, since they are speculated to have a special response to the incident gravitational waves (GWs) that leads to GW echoes. We show that energy carried by GWs can easily cause the event horizon to form out of a static ECO --- leaving no echo signals towards spatial infinity. To show this, we use the ingoing Vaidya spacetime and take into account the back reaction due to incoming GWs. Demanding that an ECO does not collapse into a black hole puts an upper bound on the compactness of the ECO, at the cost of less distinct echo signals for smaller compactness. The trade-off between echoes' detectability and distinguishability leads to a fine tuning of ECO parameters for LIGO to find distinct echoes. We also show that an extremely compact ECO that can survive the gravitational collapse and give rise to GW echoes might have to expand its surface in a non-causal way.

Theoretical Review of Charmonium Production with Different $p_T$ in the Hot Medium

Charmonia with different transverse momentum $p_T$ usually comes from different mechanisms in the relativistic heavy ion collisions. This work tries to review the theoretical studies on quarkonium evolutions in the deconfined medium produced in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions. The charmonia with high $p_T$ are mainly from the initial hadronic collisions, and therefore sensitive to the initial energy density of the bulk medium. For those charmonia within $0.1<p_T<5$ GeV/c at the energies of Large Hadron Collisions (LHC), They are mainly produced by the recombination of charm and anti-charm quarks in the medium. In the extremely low $p_T\sim 1/R_A$ ($R_A$ is the nuclear radius), additional contribution from the coherent interactions between electromagnetic fields generated by one nucleus and the target nucleus plays a non-negligible role in the $J/ψ$ production even in semi-central Pb-Pb collisions.

$ψ(2S)$ photoproduction in high energy nuclear collisions

We study coherent photoproduction of $ψ'$ and the subsequent suppression in high energy nuclear collisions. The hot medium effect on charmonium photoproduction is controlled by the competition between the fireball size and nuclear size. When the former is smaller than the later, the photoproduction is only slightly affected by the hot medium. We calculate the yield ratio of $ψ'$ to $J/ψ$ in semi-central Pb-Pb collisions at LHC energy, while the high $p_T$ limit is characterized by the fireball, its value in low $p_T$ limit can still reach the significant enhancement by photoproduction.

Dilepton photoproduction measures the fluctuations of initial electromagnetic fields in nuclear collisions

Dilepton production from two photon interactions $γγ\rightarrow l^+l^-$ are studied in semi-central and peripheral nuclear collisions. Based on Weizsäcker-Williams approach, it is shown that the dilepton photoproduction is proportional to the electromagnetic (EM) fields $\sim E^2B^2$ and therefore sensitive to the magnitude and lifetime of initial EM fields which last only for a short time and are hard to be measured in experiments directly. We propose dilepton photoproduction as a probe for the nuclear charge fluctuations, which are crucial for the electric/magnetic field induced chiral and charge particle evolutions. We calculate the relative standard deviation of dilepton mass spectrum with event-by-event fluctuating nuclear charge distributions (and EM fields).

Deformation of extremal black holes from stringy interactions

Black holes are a powerful setting for studying general relativity and theories beyond GR. However, analytical solutions for rotating black holes in beyond-GR theories are difficult to find because of the complexity of such theories. In this paper, we solve for the deformation to the near-horizon extremal Kerr metric due to two example string-inspired beyond-GR theories: Einstein-dilaton-Gauss-Bonnet, and dynamical Chern-Simons theory. We accomplish this by making use of the enhanced symmetry group of NHEK and the weak-coupling limit of EdGB and dCS. We find that the EdGB metric deformation has a curvature singularity, while the dCS metric is regular. From these solutions we compute orbital frequencies, horizon areas, and entropies. This sets the stage for analytically understanding the microscopic origin of black hole entropy in beyond-GR theories.

Top-forms of Leading Singularities in Nonplanar Multi-loop Amplitudes

Bipartite on-shell diagrams are the latest tool in constructing scattering amplitudes. In this paper we prove that a Britto-Cachazo-Feng-Witten (BCFW)-decomposable on-shell diagram process a rational top-form if and only if the algebraic ideal comprised of the geometrical constraints is shifted linearly during successive BCFW integrations. With a proper geometric interpretation of the constraints in the Grassmannian manifold, the rational top-form integration contours can thus be obtained, and understood, in a straightforward way. All rational top-form integrands of arbitrary higher loops leading singularities can therefore be derived recursively, as long as the corresponding on-shell diagram is BCFW-decomposable.

Top-forms of Leading Singularities in Nonplanar Multi-loop Amplitudes

The on-shell diagram is a very important tool in studying scattering amplitudes. In this paper we discuss the on-shell diagrams without external BCFW-bridges. We introduce an extra step of adding an auxiliary external momentum line. Then we can decompose the on-shell diagrams by removing external BCFW-bridges to a planar diagram whose top-form is well-known to all now. The top-form of the on-shell diagram with the auxiliary line can be obtained by adding the BCFW-bridges in an inverse order as discussed in our former paper \cite{Chen:2014ara}. To get the top-form of the original diagram, the soft limit of the auxiliary line is needed. We obtain the evolution rule for the Grassmannian integral and the geometry constraint under the soft limit. This completes the top-form description of leading singularities in nonplanar scattering amplitudes of $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super Yang-Mills (SYM), which is valid for arbitrary higher-loops and beyond the Maximally-Helicity-Violation (MHV) amplitudes.
