Hermitian K-theory for stable $\infty$-categories III: Grothendieck-Witt groups of rings

We establish a fibre sequence relating the classical Grothendieck-Witt theory of a ring $R$ to the homotopy $\mathrm{C}_2$-orbits of its K-theory and Ranicki's original (non-periodic) symmetric L-theory. We use this fibre sequence to remove the assumption that 2 is a unit in $R$ from various results about Grothendieck-Witt groups. For instance, we solve the homotopy limit problem for Dedekind rings whose fraction field is a number field, calculate the various flavours of Grothendieck-Witt groups of $\mathbb{Z}$, show that the Grothendieck-Witt groups of rings of integers in number fields are finitely generated, and that the comparison map from quadratic to symmetric Grothendieck-Witt theory of Noetherian rings of global dimension $d$ is an equivalence in degrees $\geq d+3$. As an important tool, we establish the hermitian analogue of Quillen's localisation-dévissage sequence for Dedekind rings and use it to solve a conjecture of Berrick-Karoubi.

Hermitian K-theory for stable $\infty$-categories II: Cobordism categories and additivity

We define Grothendieck-Witt spectra in the setting of Poincaré $\infty$-categories and show that they fit into an extension with a K- and an L-theoretic part. As consequences we deduce localisation sequences for Verdier quotients, and generalisations of Karoubi's fundamental and periodicity theorems for rings in which 2 need not be invertible. Our set-up allows for the uniform treatment of such algebraic examples alongside homotopy-theoretic generalisations: For example, the periodicity theorem holds for complex oriented $\mathrm{E}_1$-rings, and we show that the Grothendieck-Witt theory of parametrised spectra recovers Weiss and Williams' LA-theory. Our Grothendieck-Witt spectra are defined via a version of the hermitian Q-construction, and a novel feature of our approach is to interpret the latter as a cobordism category. This perspective also allows us to give a hermitian version -- along with a concise proof -- of the theorem of Blumberg, Gepner and Tabuada, and provides a cobordism theoretic description of the aforementioned LA-spectra.

A motivic spectrum representing hermitian K-theory

We establish fundamental motivic results about hermitian K-theory without assuming that 2 is invertible on the base scheme. In particular, we prove that both quadratic and symmetric Grothendieck-Witt theory satisfy Nisnevich descent, and that symmetric Grothendieck-Witt theory further satisfies a projective bundle formula, as well as dévissage and A^1-invariance over a regular Noetherian base of finite Krull dimension. We use this to show that over a regular Noetherian base, symmetric Grothendieck-Witt theory is represented by a motivic E-infinity-ring spectrum, which we then show is an absolutely pure spectrum, answering a question of Déglise. As with algebraic K-theory, we show that over a general base, one can also construct a hermitian K-theory motivic spectrum, representing this time a suitable homotopy invariant and Karoubi-localising version of Grothendieck-Witt theory.

Milnor-Witt Motives

We develop the theory of Milnor-Witt motives and motivic cohomology. Compared to Voevodsky's theory of motives and his motivic cohomology, the first difference appears in our definition of Milnor-Witt finite correspondences, where our cycles come equipped with quadratic forms. This yields a weaker notion of transfers and a derived category of motives that is closer to the stable homotopy theory of schemes. We prove a cancellation theorem when tensoring with the Tate object, we compare the diagonal part of our Milnor-Witt motivic cohomology to Minor-Witt K-theory and we provide spectra representing various versions of motivic cohomology in the $\mathbb{A}^1$-derived category or the stable homotopy category of schemes.

Hermitian K-theory for stable $\infty$-categories I: Foundations

This paper is the first in a series in which we offer a new framework for hermitian K-theory in the realm of stable $\infty$-categories. Our perspective yields solutions to a variety of classical problems involving Grothendieck-Witt groups of rings and clarifies the behaviour of these invariants when 2 is not invertible. In this article we lay the foundations of our approach by considering Lurie's notion of a Poincaré $\infty$-category, which permits an abstract counterpart of unimodular forms called Poincaré objects. We analyse the special cases of hyperbolic and metabolic Poincaré objects, and establish a version of Ranicki's algebraic Thom construction. For derived $\infty$-categories of rings, we classify all Poincaré structures and study in detail the process of deriving them from classical input, thereby locating the usual setting of forms over rings within our framework. We also develop the example of visible Poincaré structures on $\infty$-categories of parametrised spectra, recovering the visible signature of a Poincaré duality space. We conduct a thorough investigation of the global structural properties of Poincaré $\infty$-categories, showing in particular that they form a bicomplete, closed symmetric monoidal $\infty$-category. We also study the process of tensoring and cotensoring a Poincaré $\infty$-category over a finite simplicial complex, a construction featuring prominently in the definition of the L- and Grothendieck-Witt spectra that we consider in the next instalment. Finally, we define already here the 0-th Grothendieck-Witt group of a Poincaré $\infty$-category using generators and relations. We extract its basic properties, relating it in particular to the 0-th L- and algebraic K-groups, a relation upgraded in the second instalment to a fibre sequence of spectra which plays a key role in our applications.

Relative equivariant motives and modules

We introduce and study various categories of (equivariant) motives of (versal) flag varieties. We relate these categories with certain categories of parabolic (Demazure) modules. We show that the motivic decomposition type of a versal flag variety depends on the direct sum decomposition type of the parabolic module. To do this we use localization techniques of Kostant-Kumar in the context of generalized oriented cohomology as well as the Rost nilpotence principle for algebraic cobordism and its generic version. As an application, we obtain new proofs and examples of indecomposable Chow motives of versal flag varieties.

Finite Chow-Witt correspondences

We introduce the category of finite Chow-Witt correspondences over a perfect field k of characteristic not 2. We then use them to define bigraded generalized motivic cohomology groups of a smooth scheme over k and begin the study of their relationship with ordinary motivic cohomology groups.

A comparison theorem for MW-motivic cohomology

We prove that for a finitely generated field over an infinite perfect field k, and for any integer n, the (n,n)-th MW-motivic cohomology group identifies with the n-th Milnor-Witt K-theory group of that field

Formal affine Demazure and Hecke algebras of Kac-Moody root systems

We define the formal affine Demazure algebra and formal affine Hecke algebra associated to a Kac-Moody root system. We prove the structure theorems of these algebras, hence, extending several result and construction (presentation in terms of generators and relations, coproduct and product structures, filtration by codimension of Bott-Samelson classes, root polynomials and multiplication formulas) that were previously known for finite root system.

Groupes Classiques

We introduce so-called "classical" algebraic group over a general base scheme, and then place them where they belong in the classification of reductive groups established in SGA3. We cover the non-split cases and we describe on the way several categories of torsors.

Push-pull operators on the formal affine Demazure algebra and its dual

In the present paper we introduce and study the push pull operators on the formal affine Demazure algebra and its dual. As an application we provide a non-degenerate pairing on the dual of the formal affine Demazure algebra which serves as an algebraic counterpart of the natural pairing on the T-equivariant oriented cohomology of G/B induced by multiplication and push-forward to a point. This paper can be viewed as the next step towards the `algebraization program' for equivariant oriented cohomology theories started in arXiv:0905.1341 and continued in arXiv:1208.4114 and arXiv:1209.1676; the general idea being to match cohomology rings of algebraic varieties and elements of classical interest in them (such as classes of Schubert varieties) with algebraic and combinatorial objects that can be introduced in the spirit of [Demazure, Invariants symétriques entiers des groupes de Weyl et torsion, Invent. Math. 21:287-301, 1973] and [Kostant, Kumar, The nil Hecke ring and cohomology of G/P for a Kac-Moody group G, Advances in Math. 62:187-237, 1986].

A coproduct structure on the formal affine Demazure algebra

In the present paper we generalize the coproduct structure on nil Hecke rings introduced and studied by Kostant-Kumar to the context of an arbitrary algebraic oriented cohomology theory and its associated formal group law. We then construct an algebraic model of the T-equivariant oriented cohomology of the variety of complete flags.

Equivariant oriented cohomology of flag varieties

Given an equivariant oriented cohomology theory $h$, a split reductive group $G$, a maximal torus $T$ in $G$, and a parabolic subgroup $P$ containing $T$, we explain how the $T$-equivariant oriented cohomology ring $h_T(G/P)$ can be identified with the dual of a coalgebra defined using exclusively the root datum of $(G,T)$, a set of simple roots defining $P$ and the formal group law of $h$. In two papers [Push-pull operators on the formal affine Demazure algebra and its dual, arXiv:1312.0019] and [A coproduct structure on the formal affine Demazure algebra, arXiv:1209.1676], we studied the properties of this dual and of some related operators by algebraic and combinatorial methods, without any reference to geometry. The present paper can be viewed as a companion paper, that justifies all the definitions of the algebraic objects and operators by explaining how to match them to equivariant oriented cohomology rings endowed with operators constructed using push-forwards and pull-backs along geometric morphisms. Our main tool is the pull-back to the $T$-fixed points of $G/P$ which injects the cohomology ring in question into a direct product of a finite number of copies of the $T$-equivariant oriented cohomology of a point.

Witt groups of Grassmann varieties

We compute the total Witt groups of (split) Grassmann varieties, over any regular base X. The answer is a free module over the total Witt ring of X. We provide an explicit basis for this free module, which is indexed by a special class of Young diagrams, that we call even Young diagrams.

Push-forwards for Witt groups of schemes

We define push-forwards for Witt groups of schemes along proper morphisms, using Grothendieck duality theory. This article is an application of results of the authors on tensor-triangulated closed categories to such structures on some derived categories of schemes together with classical derived functors.

Invariants, torsion indices and oriented cohomology of complete flags

In the present notes we generalize the classical work of Demazure [Invariants symétriques entiers des groupes de Weyl et torsion] to arbitrary oriented cohomology theories and formal group laws. Let G be a split semisemiple linear algebraic group over a field and let T be its split maximal torus. We construct a generalized characteristic map relating the so called formal group ring of the character group of T with the cohomology of the variety of Borel subgroups of G. The main result of the paper says that the kernel of this map is generated by W-invariant elements, where W is the Weyl group of G. As one of the applications we provide an algorithm (realized as a Macaulau2 package) which can be used to compute the ring structure of an oriented cohomology (algebraic cobordism, Morava $K$-theories, connective K-theory, Chow groups, K_0, etc.) of a complete flag variety.
