Remarks on minimal sets and conjectures of Cassels, Swinnerton-Dyer, and Margulis

We prove that a hypothesis of Cassels, Swinnerton-Dyer, recast by Margulis as statement on the action of the diagonal group $A$ on the space of unimodular lattices, is equivalent to several assertions about minimal sets for this action. More generally, for a maximal $\mathbb{R}$-diagonalizable subgroup $A$ of a reductive group $G$ and a lattice $Γ$ in $G$, we give a sufficient condition for a compact $A$-minimal subset $Y$ of $G/Γ$ to be of a simple form, which is also necessary if $G$ is $\mathbb{R}$-split. We also show that the stabilizer of $Y$ has no nontrivial connected unipotent subgroups.

On stable lattices and the diagonal group

Inspired by work of McMullen, we show that any orbit for the action of the diagonal group on the space of lattices, accumulates on a stable lattice. We use this to settle a conjecture of Ramharter about Mordell's constant, get new proofs of Minkowski's conjecture in dimensions up to seven, and answer a question of Harder on the volume of stable lattices.

Translation surfaces with no convex presentation

We give infinite lists of translations surfaces with no convex presentations. We classify the surfaces in the stratum H(2) which do not have convex presentations, as well as those with no strictly convex presentations. We show that in H(1,1), all surfaces in the eigenform loci E_4, E_9 or E_{16} have no strictly convex presentation, and that the list of surfaces with no convex presentations in H(1,1) - (E_4 union E_9 union E_{16}) is finite and consists of square-tiled surfaces. We prove the existence of non-lattice surfaces without strictly convex presentations in all of the strata H^{(hyp)}(g-1, g-1).

On the Mordell-Gruber spectrum

We investigate the Mordell constant of certain families of lattices, in particular, of lattices arising from totally real fields. We define the almost sure value k_mu of the Mordell constant with respect to certain homogeneous measures on the space of lattices, and establish a strict inequality k_mu < k_nu, when mu,nu are finite and the support of mu is strictly contained in the support of nu. In combination with known results regarding the dynamics of the diagonal group we obtain isolation results as well as information regarding accumulation points of the Mordell-Gruber spectrum, extending previous work of Gruber and Ramharter. One of the main tools we develop is the associated algebra, an algebraic invariant attached to the orbit of a lattice under a block group, which can be used to characterize closed and finite volume orbits.

Rigidity of group actions on homogeneous spaces, III

Consider homogeneous G/H and G/F, for an S-algebraic group G. A lattice Γ acts on the left strictly conservatively. The following rigidity results are obtained: morphisms, factors and joinings defined apriori only in the measurable category are in fact algebraically constrained. Arguing in an elementary fashion we manage to classify all the measurable Φ commuting with the Γ-action: assuming ergodicity, we find they are algebraically defined.

Modified Schmidt games and a conjecture of Margulis

We prove a conjecture of G.A. Margulis on the abundance of certain exceptional orbits of partially hyperbolic flows on homogeneous spaces by utilizing a theory of modified Schmidt games, which are modifications of $(α,β)$-games introduced by W. Schmidt in mid-1960s.

The set of badly approximable vectors is strongly $C^1$ incompressible

We prove that the countable intersection of $C^1$-diffeomorphic images of certain Diophantine sets has full Hausdorff dimension. For example, we show this for the set of badly approximable vectors in $\mathbb{R}^d$, improving earlier results of Schmidt and Dani. To prove this, inspired by ideas of McMullen, we define a new variant of Schmidt's $(α, β)$-game and show that our sets are hyperplane absolute winning (HAW), which in particular implies winning in the original game. The HAW property passes automatically to games played on certain fractals, thus our sets intersect a large class of fractals in a set of positive dimension. This extends earlier results of Fishman to a more general set-up, with simpler proofs.

Cohomology classes represented by measured foliations, and Mahler's question for interval exchanges

A translation surface on (S, Σ) gives rise to two transverse measured foliations \FF, \GG on S with singularities in Σ, and by integration, to a pair of cohomology classes [\FF], \, [\GG] \in H^1(S, Σ; \R). Given a measured foliation \FF, we characterize the set of cohomology classes \B for which there is a measured foliation \GG as above with \B = [\GG]. This extends previous results of Thurston and Sullivan. We apply this to two problems: unique ergodicity of interval exchanges and flows on the moduli space of translation surfaces. For a fixed permutation σ\in \mathcal{S}_d, the space \R^d_+ parametrizes the interval exchanges on d intervals with permutation σ. We describe lines \ell in \R^d_+ such that almost every point in \ell is uniquely ergodic. We also show that for σ(i) = d+1-i, for almost every s>0, the interval exchange transformation corresponding to σand (s, s^2, \ldots, s^d) is uniquely ergodic. As another application we show that when k=|Σ| \geq 2, the operation of `moving the singularities horizontally' is globally well-defined. We prove that there is a well-defined action of the group B \ltimes \R^{k-1} on the set of translation surfaces of type (S, Σ) without horizontal saddle connections. Here B \subset \SL(2,\R) is the subgroup of upper triangular matrices.

Parking garages with optimal dynamics

We construct generalized polygons (`parking garages') in which the billiard flow satisfies the Veech dichotomy, although the associated translation surface obtained from the Zemlyakov-Katok unfolding is not a lattice surface. We also explain the difficulties in constructing a genuine polygon with these properties.

Lattice actions on the plane revisited

We study the action of a lattice in the group SL(2,R) on the plane. We obtain a formula which simultaneously describes visits of an orbit to either a fixed ball, or an expanding or contracting family of annuli. We also discuss the `shrinking target problem'. Our results are valid for an explicitly described set of initial points: all nonzero vectors in the case of a cocompact lattice, and all vectors satisfying certain diophantine conditions in case SL(2,Z). The proofs combine the method of Ledrappier with effective equidistribution results for the horocycle flow due to Burger, Strombergsson, Forni and Flaminio.

Modified Schmidt games and Diophantine approximation with weights

We show that the sets of weighted badly approximable vectors in $\Bbb R^n$ are winning sets of certain games, which are modifications of $(α,β)$-games introduced by W. Schmidt in 1966. The latter winning property is stable with respect to countable intersections, and is shown to imply full Hausdorff dimension.

Generalized staircases: recurrence and symmetry

We study infinite translation surfaces which are Z-covers of compact translation surfaces. We obtain conditions ensuring that such surfaces have Veech groups which are Fuchsian of the first kind and give a necessary and sufficient condition for recurrence of their straight-line flows. Extending results of Hubert and Schmithusen, we provide examples of infinite non-arithmetic lattice surfaces, as well as surfaces with infinitely generated Veech groups.

Characterizations of lattice surfaces

We answer a question of Vorobets by showing that the lattice property for flat surfaces is equivalent to the existence of a positive lower bound for the areas of affine triangles. We show that the set of affine equivalence classes of lattice surfaces with a fixed positive lower bound for the areas of triangles is finite and we obtain explicit bounds on its cardinality. We deduce several other characterizations of the lattice property.

Dirichlet's theorem on diophantine approximation and homogeneous flows

We show that for any $ε<1$ and any $\mathcal{T}$ `drifting away from walls', Dirichlet's Theorem cannot be $ε$-improved along $\mathcal{T}$ for Lebesgue almost every system of linear forms $Y$ (see the paper for definitions). In the case $m = 1$ we also show that for a large class of measures $μ$ there is $ε_0>0$ such that for any drifting away from walls $\mathcal{T}$, any $ε<ε_0$, and for $μ$-almost every $Y$, Dirichlet's Theorem cannot be $ε$-improved along $\mathcal{T}$. These measures include natural measures on sufficiently regular smooth manifolds and fractals. Our results extend those of several authors beginning with the work of Davenport and Schmidt done in late 1960s. The proofs rely on a translation of the problem into a dynamical one regarding the action of a diagonal semigroup on the space $\text{SL}_{m+n}(\mathbb{R})/\text{SL}_{m+n}(\mathbb{Z})$.

Finiteness results for flat surfaces: large cusps and short geodesics

For fixed g and T we show that finiteness of the set of affine equivalence classes of flat surfaces of genus g whose Veech groups contain a cusp of hyperbolic co-area less than T. We obtain new restrictions on Veech groups: we show that any non-elementary Veech group can appear only finitely many times in a fixed stratum, that any non-elementary Veech group is of finite index in its normalizer, and that the quotient of the upper half plane by a non-lattice Veech group contains arbitrarily large embedded disks. These are proved using the finiteness of the set of affine equivalence classes of flat surfaces of genus g whose Veech group contains a hyperbolic element with eigenvalue less than T.

Friendly measures, homogeneous flows and singular vectors

We prove that singular vectors have measure zero with respect to any friendly measure on $\Bbb R^n$ (e.g. the volume measure on a nondegenerate submanifold). This generalizes special cases considered by Davenport-Schmidt, Baker and Bugeaud. The main tool is quantitative nondivergence estimates for quasi-polynomial flows on homogeneous spaces.
