Collinear matching for leading power gluon transverse momentum distributions

We compute the tree-level and one-loop matching relations for leading power gluon transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions. At tree-level, working within the spinor formalism, we focus on twist-2 and twist-3 contributions, deriving the complete series of mass corrections for both T-even and T-odd distributions. At one-loop accuracy, we extend the parton-in-parton framework to include contributions beyond the leading term in the small-b expansion. Applying this methodology to the gluon sector, we obtain for the first time the Wandzura-Wilczek approximation for the gluon worm-gear T distribution. Furthermore, we develop a method to include the mass corrections in one-loop results and provide a closed-form expression for the mass series suitable for numerical implementations.

Higher-order structure of Hamiltonian truncation effective theory

We study the Hamiltonian truncation for the two-dimensional $\lambda\phi^4$ theory within the framework of Hamiltonian truncation effective theory, where truncation artifacts are mitigated through a systematic inclusion of corrective terms organized in inverse powers of the ultraviolet energy cut-off $E_{\rm max}$. Building on the leading-order matching program, we develop two complementary extensions. First, we derive compact all-order expressions for the local matching corrections to the mass and quartic coupling by resumming infinite classes of diagrams sharing fixed topologies within the local approximation. Second, we extend the non-local sector by computing the next-to-next-to-local corrections contributing at $\mathcal{O}(E_{\rm max}^{-4})$, following a continuum-first matching procedure, in which the effective corrections are computed in infinite volume and the spatial direction is subsequently re-compactified to obtain a discrete basis of free-Hamiltonian eigenstates on which the truncated operator construction is implemented. Our results show that an increasingly rich operator basis is necessary to describe the theory beyond leading order.

Perturbative results for the matrix elements of the vector current and the role of different infrared regulators

We investigate the twist-2 unpolarized generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of quarks for an on-shell gluon target in quantum chromodynamics. These GPDs parametrize the leading-twist matrix elements of the nonlocal light-like flavor-singlet vector current. We compute them at one-loop accuracy in perturbation theory using a quark mass and dimensional regularization as infrared regulators. In particular, we discuss the limit of vanishing momentum transfer. The present work extends our previous related study on the axial current.

Perturbative results of matrix elements of the axial current and their relation with the axial anomaly

In the Standard Model of particle physics, the axial current is not conserved, due both to fermion masses and to the axial anomaly. Using perturbative quantum chromodynamics, we calculate matrix elements of the local and non-local axial current for a gluon target, clarifying their connection with the axial anomaly. In so doing, we also reconsider classic results obtained in the context of the nucleon spin sum rule as well as recent results for off-forward kinematics. An important role is played by the infrared regulator, for which we put a special emphasis on the nonzero quark mass. We highlight cancellations that take place between contributions from the axial anomaly and the quark mass, and we elaborate on the relation of those cancellations with the conservation of angular momentum.

Collinear matching for next-to-leading power transverse-momentum distributions

Phenomenological studies of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions rely on the expansion in small values of the transverse separation of fields, where TMD parton distributions match onto collinear parton distribution functions. In this work, we derive this expansion at tree-level for the genuine next-to-leading power quark-gluon-quark TMDs, taking into account all the target mass corrections. We find that only a limited number of TMD parton distributions exhibit matching to twist-three collinear distributions, leading to a significant simplification in the analysis of the structure functions of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering.

A model for pion collinear parton distribution function and form factor

We developed a model for the pion light-front wave function (LFWF) that incorporates valence, sea and gluon degrees of freedom. Using the LFWF overlap representation, we derived parametrizations for the pion parton distribution functions and the electromagnetic form factor. These parametrizations depend on two distinct sets of parameters, enabling separate fits of the longitudinal- and transverse-momentum dependencies of the LFWF. The pion PDFs are extracted from available Drell-Yan and photon-production data using the xFitter framework and are found well compatible with existing extractions. Furthermore, the fit of the electromagnetic form factor of the pion to all the available experimental data works quite successfully.

The valence quark, sea, and gluon content of the pion from the parton distribution functions and the electromagnetic form factor

We present a light-front model calculation of the pion parton distribution functions (PDFs) and the pion electromagnetic form factor. The pion state is modeled in terms of light-front wave functions (LFWFs) for the $q\bar q$, $q\bar q q\bar q$, $q\bar q g$, and $q\bar q gg$ components. We design the LFWFs so that the parameters in the longitudinal and transverse momentum space enter separately in the fit of the pion PDFs and the electromagnetic form factor, respectively. We extract the pion PDFs within the xFitter framework using available Drell-Yan and photon-production data. With the obtained parameters in the longitudinal-momentum space, we then fit the available experimental data on the pion electromagnetic form factor to constrain the remaining parameters in the transverse-momentum space. The results for the pion PDFs are compatible with existing extractions and lattice calculations, and the fit to the pion electromagnetic form factor data works quite successfully. The obtained parametrization for the LFWFs marks a step forward towards a unified description of different hadron distribution functions in both the longitudinal- and transverse-momentum space and will be further applied to a phenomenological study of transverse-momentum dependent parton distribution functions and generalized parton distributions.

The gravitational form factors of the electron in quantum electrodynamics

We calculate the gravitational form factors of the electron at one loop in quantum electrodynamics, decomposing these into contributions from the electron and photon parts of the energy-momentum tensor. Ultraviolet divergences are removed through renormalization in the $\overline{\text{MS}}$ scheme. Infrared divergences are isolated and results are given in both dimensional regularization and photon-mass regularization. The form factors contain information about the electron's energy and angular momentum structure in QED, as well as its mass radius. Whenever possible, we compare our results with the existing literature.

Energy-momentum tensor in QCD: nucleon mass decomposition and mechanical equilibrium

We review and examine in detail recent developments regarding the question of the nucleon mass decomposition. We discuss in particular the virial theorem in quantum field theory and its implications for the nucleon mass decomposition and mechanical equilibrium. We reconsider the renormalization of the QCD energy-momentum tensor in minimal-subtraction-type schemes and the physical interpretation of its components, as well as the role played by the trace anomaly and Poincaré symmetry. We also study the concept of "quantum anomalous energy" proposed in some works as a new contribution to the nucleon mass. Examining the various arguments, we conclude that the quantum anomalous energy is not a genuine contribution to the mass sum rule, as a consequence of translation symmetry.

The gravitational form factor D(t) of the electron

The electron-graviton interaction can be described in terms of the gravitational form factors of the QED energy momentum tensor. Here we focus on the form factor D(t), and we examine its properties and its interpretation in terms of internal forces at one-loop accuracy in QED. We perform the calculation by keeping separate the contributions due to the electron and the photon parts of the energy momentum tensor. We also study the case of a nonzero photon mass. Furthermore, we discuss similarities with and differences to the form factor D(t) of hadronic bound states.

Revisiting the proton mass decomposition

Different decompositions (sum rules) for the proton mass have been proposed in the literature. All of them are related to the energy-momentum tensor in quantum chromodynamics. We review and revisit these decompositions by paying special attention to recent developments with regard to the renormalization of the energy-momentum tensor. The connection between the sum rules is discussed as well. We present numerical results for the various terms of the mass decompositions up to 3 loops in the strong coupling, and consider their scheme dependence. We also elaborate on the role played by the trace anomaly and the sigma terms.

Probing Nucleons and Nuclei in High Energy Collisions

This volume is a collection of contributions for the 7-week program "Probing Nucleons and Nuclei in High Energy Collisions" that was held at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in Seattle, WA, USA, from October 1 until November 16, 2018. The program was dedicated to the physics of the Electron Ion Collider (EIC), the world's first polarized electron-nucleon (ep) and electron-nucleus (eA) collider to be constructed in the USA. These proceedings are organized by chapters, corresponding to the weeks of the program: Week I, Generalized parton distributions; Week II, Transverse spin and TMDs; Week III, Longitudinal spin; Week IV, Symposium week; Weeks V & VI, eA collisions; Week VII, pA and AA collisions. We hope these proceedings will be useful to readers as a compilation of EIC-related science at the end of the second decade of the XXI century.

Twist-3 GPDs in Deeply-Virtual Compton Scattering

The sub-leading power of the scattering amplitude for deeply-virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) off the nucleon contains leading-twist and twist-3 generalized parton distributions (GPDs). We point out that in DVCS, at twist-3 accuracy, one cannot address any individual twist-3 GPD. This complication appears on top of the deconvolution issues familiar from the twist-2 DVCS amplitude. Accessible are exclusively linear combinations involving both vector and axial-vector twist-3 GPDs. This implies, in particular, that the (kinetic) orbital angular momentum of quarks can hardly be constrained by twist-3 DVCS observables. Moreover, using the quark-target model, we find that twist-3 GPDs can be discontinuous. The discontinuities however cancel in the DVCS amplitude, which further supports the hypothesis of factorization at twist-3 accuracy.

Beam normal spin asymmetry for the $e p \to e Δ(1232)$ process

We calculate the single spin asymmetry for the $e p \to e Δ(1232)$ process, for an electron beam polarized normal to the scattering plane. Such single spin asymmetries vanish in the one-photon exchange approximation, and are directly proportional to the absorptive part of a two-photon exchange amplitude. As the intermediate state in such two-photon exchange process is on its mass shell, the asymmetry allows one to access for the first time the on-shell $Δ\to Δ$ as well as $N^\ast \to Δ$ electromagnetic transitions. We present the general formalism to describe the $e p \to e Δ$ beam normal spin asymmetry, and provide a numerical estimate of its value using the nucleon, $Δ(1232)$, $S_{11}(1535)$, and $D_{13}(1520)$ intermediate states. We compare our results with the first data from the Qweak@JLab experiment and give predictions for the A4@MAMI experiment.

Spatial distribution of angular momentum inside the nucleon

We discuss in detail the spatial distribution of angular momentum inside the nucleon. We show that the discrepancies between different definitions originate from terms that integrate to zero. Even though these terms can safely be dropped at the integrated level, they have to be taken into account at the density level. Using the scalar diquark model, we illustrate our results and, for the first time, check explicitly that the equivalence between kinetic and canonical orbital angular momentum persists at the density level, as expected in a system without gauge degrees of freedom.

The transverse structure of the pion in momentum space inspired by the AdS/QCD correspondence

We study the internal structure of the pion using a model inspired by the AdS/QCD correspondence. The holographic approach provides the light-front wave function (LFWF) for the leading Fock state component of the pion. We adopt two different forms for the LFWF derived from the AdS/QCD soft-wall model, with free parameters fitted to the available experimental information on the pion electromagnetic form factor and the leading-twist parton distribution function. The intrinsic scale of the model is taken as an additional fit parameter. Within this framework, we provide predictions for the unpolarized transverse momentum dependent parton distribution (TMD), and discuss its property both at the scale of the model and after TMD evolution to higher scales that are relevant for upcoming experimental measurements.

Transverse phase space and its multipole decomposition

Relativistic phase space distributions are very interesting objects as they allow one to gather the information extracted from various types of experiments into a single coherent picture. Focusing on the four-dimensional transverse phase space, we identified all the possible angular correlations providing at the same time a clear physical interpretation of all the leading-twist generalized and transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions. We also developed a convenient representation of this four-dimensional space.

Revisiting the equivalence of light-front and covariant QED in the light-cone gauge

We discuss the equivalence between light-front time-ordered-perturbation theory and covariant quantum field theory in light-front quantization, in the case of quantum electrodynamics at one-loop level. In particular, we review the one-loop calculation of the vertex correction, fermion self-energy and vacuum polarization. We apply the procedure of integration by residue over the light-front energy in the loop to show how the perturbative expansion in covariant terms can be reduced to a sum of propagating and instantaneous diagrams of light-front time-ordered perturbation theory. The detailed proof of equivalence between the two formulations of the theory resolves the controversial question on which form should be used for the gauge-field propagator in the light-cone gauge in the covariant approach.
