Density-valued solutions for the Boltzmann-Enskog process

The time evolution of moderately dense gas evolving in vacuum described by the Boltzmann-Enskog equation is studied. The associated stochastic process, the Boltzmann-Enskog process, was constructed by Albeverio, Rüdiger and Sundar (2017) and further studied by Friesen, Rüdiger and Sundar (2019, 2022). The process is given by the solution of a McKean-Vlasov equation driven by a Poisson random measure, the compensator depending on the distribution of the solution. The existence of a marginal probability density function at each time for the measure-valued solution is established here by using a functional-analytic criterion in Besov spaces Debussche and Romito (2014), and Fournier (2015). In addition to existence, the density is shown to reside in a Besov space. The support of the velocity marginal distribution is shown to be the whole of $\mathbb{R}^3$.

Wasserstein distance in terms of the comonotonicity Copula

The aim of this article is to write the $p$-Wasserstein metric $W_p$ with the $p$-norm, $p\in [1,\infty)$, on $\R^d$ in terms of copula. In particular for the case of one-dimensional distributions, we get that the copula employed to get the optimal coupling of the Wasserstein distances is the comotonicity copula. We obtain the equivalent result also for $d$-dimensional distributions under the sufficient and necessary condition that these have the same dependence structure of their one-dimensional marginals, i.e that the $d$-dimensional distributions share the same copula. Assuming $p\neq q$, $p,q$ $\in [1,\infty)$ and that the probability measures $μ$ and $ν$ are sharing the same copula, we also analyze the Wasserstein distance $W_{p,q}$ discussed in \cite{Alfonsi} and get an upper and lower bounds of $W_{p,q}$ in terms of $W_p$, written in terms of comonotonicity copula. We show that as a consequence the lower and upper bound of $W_{p,q}$ can be written in terms of generalized inverse functions.

Stability properties of some port-Hamiltonian SPDEs

We examine the existence and uniqueness of invariant measures of a class of stochastic partial differential equations with Gaussian and Poissonian noise and its exponential convergence. This class especially includes a case of stochastic port-Hamiltonian equations.

Stability analysis of a stochastic port-Hamiltonian car-following model

Port-Hamiltonian systems are pertinent representations of many nonlinear physical systems. In this study, we formulate and analyse a general class of stochastic car-following models with a systematic port-Hamiltonian structure. The model class is a generalisation of classical car-following approaches, including the optimal velocity model of Bando et al. (1995), the full velocity difference model of Jiang et al. (2001), and recent stochastic following models based on the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. In contrast to traditional models where the interaction is totally asymmetric (i.e., depending only on the speed and distance to the predecessor), the port-Hamiltonian car-following model also depends on the distance to the follower. We determine the exact stability condition of the finite system with $N$ vehicles and periodic boundaries. The stable system is ergodic with a unique Gaussian invariant measure. Other properties of the model are studied using numerical simulation. It turns out that the Hamiltonian component improves the flow stability and reduces the total energy in the system. Furthermore, it prevents the problematic formation of stop-and-go waves with oscillatory dynamics, even in the presence of stochastic perturbations.

Wasserstein distance in terms of the Comonotonicity Copula

In this article, we represent the Wasserstein metric of order $p$, where $p\in [1,\infty)$, in terms of the comonotonicity copula, for the case of probability measures on $\R^d$, by revisiting existing results. In 1973, Vallender established the link between the $1$-Wasserstein metric and the corresponding distribution functions for $d=1$. In 1956 Giorgio dall'Aglio showed that the p-Wasserstein metric in $d=1$ could be written in terms of the comonotonicity copula $M$ without being aware of the concept of copulas or Wasserstein metrics. In this article, for the proofs we explicitly combine tools from copula theory and Wasserstein metrics. The extension to general $d\in\N$ has some restriction, as discussed e.g. in \cite{Alfonsi} and \cite{BDS}. Some of the results of \cite{Alfonsi}, \cite{BDS} and \cite{RR} are revisited here in a more explicit form in terms of the comonotonicity copula.

Limit theorems for time averages of continuous-state branching processes with immigration

In this work we investigate limit theorems for the time-averaged process $\left(\frac{1}{t}\int_0^t X_s^x ds\right)_{t\geq 0}$ where $X^x$ is a subcritical continuous-state branching processes with immigration (CBI processes) starting in $x \geq 0$. Under a second moment condition on the branching and immigration measures we first prove the law of large numbers in $L^2$ and afterward establish the central limit theorem. Assuming additionally that the big jumps of the branching and immigration measures have finite exponential moments of some order, we prove in our main result the large deviation principle and provide a semi-explicit expression for the good rate function in terms of the branching and immigration mechanisms. Our methods are deeply based on a detailed study of the corresponding generalized Riccati equation and related exponential moments of the time-averaged process.

Spontaneous wave formation in stochastic self-driven particle systems

Waves and oscillations are commonly observed in the dynamics of self-driven agents such as pedestrians or vehicles. Interestingly, many factors may perturb the stability of space homogeneous streaming, leading to the spontaneous formation of collective oscillations of the agents related to stop-and-go waves, jamiton, or phantom jam in the literature. In this article, we demonstrate that even a minimal additive stochastic noise in stable first-order dynamics can initiate stop-and-go phenomena. The noise is not a classic white one, but a colored noise described by a Gaussian Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. It turns out that the joint dynamics of particles and noises forms again a (Gaussian) Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process whose characteristics can be explicitly expressed in terms of parameters of the model. We analyze its stability and characterize the presence of waves through oscillation patterns in the correlation and autocorrelation of the distance spacing between the particles. We determine exact solutions for the correlation functions for the finite system with periodic boundaries and in the continuum limit when the system size is infinite. Finally, we compare experimental trajectories of single-file pedestrian motions to simulation results.

Regularity of transition densities and ergodicity for affine jump-diffusion processes

In this paper we study the transition density and exponential ergodicity in total variation for an affine process on the canonical state space $\mathbb{R}_{\geq0}^{m}\times\mathbb{R}^{n}$. Under a Hörmander-type condition for diffusion components as well as a boundary non-attainment assumption, we derive the existence and regularity of the transition density for the affine process and then prove the strong Feller property. Moreover, we also show that under these and the additional subcritical conditions the corresponding affine process on the canonical state space is exponentially ergodic in the total variation distance. To prove existence and regularity of the transition density we derive some precise estimates for the real part of the characteristic function of the process. Our ergodicity result is a consequence of a suitable application of a Harris-type theorem based on a local Dobrushin condition combined with the regularity of the transition densities.

On a class of stochastic partial differential equations with multiple invariant measures

In this work we investigate the long-time behavior, that is the existence and characterization of invariant measures as well as convergence of transition probabilities, for Markov processes obtained as the unique mild solution to stochastic partial differential equations in a Hilbert space. Contrary to the existing literature where typically uniqueness of invariant measures is studied, we focus on the case where the uniqueness of invariant measures fails to hold. Namely, using a \textit{generalized dissipativity condition} combined with a decomposition of the Hilbert space, we prove the existence of multiple limiting distributions in dependence of the initial state of the process and study the convergence of transition probabilities in the Wasserstein 2-distance. Finally, we show that these results contain Lévy driven Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes, the Heath-Jarrow-Morton-Musiela equation as well as stochastic partial differential equations with delay as a particular case.

On uniqueness and stability for the Enskog equation

The time-evolution of a moderately dense gas in a vacuum is described in classical mechanics by a particle density function obtained from the Enskog equation. Based on a McKean-Vlasov stochastic equation with jumps, the associated stochastic process was recently studied in \cite{ARS17}. The latter work was extended in \cite{FRS18} to the case of general hard and soft potentials without Grad's angular cut-off assumption. By the introduction of a shifted distance that exactly compensates for the free transport term that accrues in the spatially inhomogeneous setting, we prove in this work an inequality on the Wasserstein distance for any two measure-valued solutions to the Enskog equation. As a particular consequence, we find sufficient conditions for the uniqueness and continuous-dependence on initial data for solutions to the Enskog equation applicable to hard and soft potentials without angular cut-off.

Isomorphisms for spaces of predictable processes and an extension of the Itô integral

Our goal of this note is to give an easy proof that spaces of predictable processes with values in a Banach space are isomorphic to spaces of progressive resp. adapted, measurable processes. This provides a straightforward extension of the Itô integral in infinite dimensions. We also outline an application to stochastic partial differential equations.

Ergodicity of affine processes on the cone of symmetric positive semidefinite matrices

This article investigates the long-time behavior of conservative affine processes on the cone of symmetric positive semidefinite $d\times d$-matrices. In particular, for conservative and subcritical affine processes on this cone we show that a finite $\log$-moment of the state-independent jump measure is sufficient for the existence of a unique limit distribution. Moreover, we study the convergence rate of the underlying transition kernel to the limit distribution: firstly, in a specific metric induced by the Laplace transform and secondly, in the Wasserstein distance under a first moment assumption imposed on the state-independent jump measure and an additional condition on the diffusion parameter.

Stochastic equation and exponential ergodicity in Wasserstein distances for affine processes

This work is devoted to the study of conservative affine processes on the canonical state space $D = $R_+^m \times \R^n$, where $m + n > 0$. We show that each affine process can be obtained as the pathwise unique strong solution to a stochastic equation driven by Brownian motions and Poisson random measures. Then we study the long-time behavior of affine processes, i.e., we show that under first moment condition on the state-dependent and log-moment conditions on the state-independent jump measures, respectively, each subcritical affine process is exponentially ergodic in a suitably chosen Wasserstein distance. Moments of affine processes are studied as well.

The Enskog process for hard and soft potentials

The density of a moderately dense gas evolving in a vacuum is given by the solution of an Enskog equation. Recently we have constructed in [ARS17] the stochastic process that corresponds to the Enskog equation under suitable conditions. The Enskog process is identified as the solution of a McKean-Vlasov equation driven by a Poisson random measure. In this work, we continue the study for a wider class of collision kernels that includes hard and soft potentials. Based on a suitable particle approximation of binary collisions, the existence of an Enskog process is established.

Exponential ergodicity for stochastic equations of nonnegative processes with jumps

In this work, we study ergodicity of continuous time Markov processes on state space $\mathbb{R}_{\geq 0} := [0,\infty)$ obtained as unique strong solutions to stochastic equations with jumps. Our first main result establishes exponential ergodicity in the Wasserstein distance, provided the stochastic equation satisfies a comparison principle and the drift is dissipative. In particular, it is applicable to continuous-state branching processes with immigration (shorted as CBI processes), possibly with nonlinear branching mechanisms or in Lévy random environments. Our second main result establishes exponential ergodicity in total variation distance for subcritical CBI processes under a first moment condition on the jump measure for branching and a $\log$-moment condition on the jump measure for immigration.

Boundary behavior of multi-type continuous-state branching processes with immigration

In this article we provide a sufficient condition for a continuous-state branching process with immigration (CBI process) to not hit its boundary, i.e. for non-extinction. Our result applies to arbitrary dimension $d \geq 1$ and is formulated in terms of an integrability condition for its immigration and branching mechanisms $F$ and $R$. The proof is based on a suitable comparison with one-dimensional CBI processes and an existing result for one-dimensional CBI processes. The same technique is also used to provide a sufficient condition for transience of multi-type CBI processes.

Existence of limiting distribution for affine processes

In this paper, sufficient conditions are given for the existence of limiting distribution of a conservative affine process on the canonical state space $\mathbb{R}_{\geqslant0}^{m}\times\mathbb{R}^{n}$, where $m,\thinspace n\in\mathbb{Z}_{\geqslant0}$ with $m+n>0$. Our main theorem extends and unifies some known results for OU-type processes on $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ and one-dimensional CBI processes (with state space $\mathbb{R}_{\geqslant0}$). To prove our result, we combine analytical and probabilistic techniques; in particular, the stability theory for ODEs plays an important role.
