Measure of maximal entropy for H-flows on non-compact manifolds

In this work, we introduce a natural class of chaotic flows on non-compact manifolds, called H-flows, which includes geodesic flows on non-compact manifolds with pinched negative curvature. We show that, under the additional assumption, called strong positive recurrence, that their entropy at infinity is strictly smaller than the topological entropy, such flows admit an invariant probability measure maximizing entropy. In particular, we compare several notions of entropy in a non-compact setting.

Pressure at infinity and strong positive recurrence in negative curvature

In the context of geodesic flows of noncompact negatively curved manifolds, we propose three different definitions of entropy and pressure at infinity, through growth of periodic orbits, critical exponents of Poincaré series, and entropy (pressure) of invariant measures. We show that these notions coincide. Thanks to these entropy and pressure at infinity, we investigate thoroughly the notion of strong positive recurrence in this geometric context. A potential is said strongly positively recurrent when its pressure at infinity is strictly smaller than the full topological pressure. We show in particular that if a potential is strongly positively recurrent, then it admits a finite Gibbs measure. We also provide easy criteria allowing to build such strong positively recurrent potentials and many examples.

Narrow equidistribution and counting of closed geodesics on noncompact manifolds

We prove the equidistribution of (weighted) periodic orbits of the geodesic ow on noncompact negatively curved manifolds toward equilibrium states in the narrow topology, i.e. in the dual of bounded continuous functions. We deduce an exact asymptotic counting for periodic orbits (weighted or not), which was previously known only for geometrically nite manifolds.

Twisted Patterson-Sullivan measures and applications to amenability and coverings

Let $Γ'<Γ$ be two discrete groups acting properly by isometries on a Gromov-hyperbolic space $X$. We prove that their critical exponents coincide if and only if $Γ'$ is co-amenable in $Γ$, under the assumption that the action of $Γ$ on $X$ is strongly positively recurrent, i.e. has a growth gap at infinity. This generalizes all previously known results on this question, which required either $X$ to be the real hyperbolic space and $Γ$ geometrically finite, or $X$ Gromov hyperbolic and $Γ$ cocompact. This result is optimal: we provide several counterexamples when the action is not strongly positively recurrent.

Regularity of entropy, geodesic currents and entropy at infinity

In this work, we introduce the notion of entropy at infinity, and define a wide class of noncompact manifolds with negative curvature, those which admit a critical gap between entropy at infinity and topological entropy. We call them strongly positively recurrent manifolds (SPR), and provide many examples. We show that dynamically, they behave as compact manifolds. In particular, they admit a finite measure of maximal entropy. Using the point of view of currents at infinity, we show that on these SPR manifolds the topological entropy of the geodesic flow varies in a C 1 -way along (uniformly) C 1 -perturbations of the metric. This result generalizes former work of Katok (1982) and Katok-Knieper-Weiss (1991) in the compact case.

On topological and measurable dynamics of unipotent frame flows for hyperbolic manifolds

We study the dynamics of unipotent flows on frame bundles of hyperbolic manifolds of infinite volume. We prove that they are topologi-cally transitive, and that the natural invariant measure, the so-called " Burger-Roblin measure ", is ergodic, as soon as the geodesic flow admits a finite measure of maximal entropy, and this entropy is strictly greater than the codi-mension of the unipotent flow inside the maximal unipotent flow. The latter result generalises a Theorem of Mohammadi and Oh.

Finiteness of gibbs measures on noncompact manifolds with pinched negative curvature

We characterize the finiteness of Gibbs measures for geodesic flows on negatively curved manifolds by several criteria, analogous to those proposed by Sarig for symbolic dynamical systems over an infinite alphabet. As an application, we recover Dal'bo-Otal-Peign{é} criterion of finiteness for the Bowen-Margulis measure on geometrically finite hyperbolic manifolds, as well as Peign{é}' examples of gemetrically infinite manifolds having a finite Bowen-Margulis measure. These criteria should be useful in the future to find more examples with finite Gibbs measures.

A short proof of unique ergodicity of horospherical foliations on infinite volume hyperbolic manifolds

We give a short proof of the unique ergodicity of the strong stable foliation of the geodesic flow on the frame bundle of a hyperbolic manifold admitting a finite measure of maximal entropy. Equivalently, let G = S0o(n, 1), $Γ$ \textless{} G be a discrete subgroup of G, and G = N AK the Iwasawa decomposition of G. If the geodesic flow on $Γ$\G admits a finite measure of maximal entropy, we prove that the action of N on $Γ$\G by right multiplication admits a unique invariant measure supported on points whose A-orbit does not diverge.

Pressures for geodesic flows of rank one manifolds

We study the geodesic flow on the unit tangent bundle of a rank one manifold and we give conditions under which all classical definitions of pressure of a Hölder continuous potential coincide. We provide a large deviation statement, which allows to neglect (periodic) orbits that lack sufficient hyperbolic behavior. Our results involve conditions on the potential, that take into consideration its properties in the nonhyperbolic part of the manifold. We draw some conclusions for the construction of equilibrium states.

Generic measures for geodesic flows on nonpositively curved manifolds

We study the generic invariant probability measures for the geodesic flow on connected complete nonpositively curved manifolds. Under a mild technical assumption, we prove that ergodicity is a generic property in the set of probability measures defined on the unit tangent bundle of the manifold and supported by trajectories not bounding a flat strip. This is done by showing that Dirac measures on periodic orbits are dense in that set. In the case of a compact surface, we get the following sharp result: ergod- icity is a generic property in the space of all invariant measures defined on the unit tangent bundle of the surface if and only if there are no flat strips in the universal cover of the surface. Finally, we show under suitable assumptions that generically, the invariant probability measures have zero entropy and are not strongly mixing.

Equilibrium states in negative curvature

With their origin in thermodynamics and symbolic dynamics, Gibbs measures are crucial tools to study the ergodic theory of the geodesic flow on negatively curved manifolds. We develop a framework (through Patterson-Sullivan densities) allowing us to get rid of compactness assumptions on the manifold, and prove many existence, uniqueness and finiteness results of Gibbs measures. We give many applications, to the Variational Principle, the counting and equidistribution of orbit points and periods, the unique ergodicity of the strong unstable foliation and the classification of Gibbs densities on some Riemannian covers.

Densité de demi-horocycles sur une surface hyperbolique géométriquement infinie

On the unit tangent bundle of a hyperbolic surface, we study the density of positive orbits $(h^s v)_{s\ge 0}$ under the horocyclic flow. More precisely, given a full orbit $(h^sv)_{s\in \R}$, we prove that under a weak assumption on the vector $v$, both half-orbits $(h^sv)_{s\ge 0}$ and $(h^s v)_{s\le 0}$ are simultaneously dense or not in the nonwandering set $\mathcal{E}$ of the horocyclic flow. We give also a counter-example to this result when this assumption is not satisfied.

Counterexamples in nonpositive curvature

We give examples of rank one compact surfaces on which there exist recurrent geodesics that cannot be shadowed by periodic geodesics. We build rank one compact surfaces such that ergodic measures on the unit tangent bundle of the surface are not dense in the set of probability measures invariant by the geodesic flow. Finally, we give examples of complete rank one surfaces for which the non wandering set of the geodesic flow is connected, the periodic orbits are dense in that set, yet the geodesic flow is not transitive in restriction to its non wandering set.

The generic points for the horocycle flow on a class of hyperbolic surfaces with infinite genus

A point is called generic for a flow preserving an infinite ergodic invariant Radon measure, if its orbit satisfies the conclusion of the ratio ergodic theorem for every pair of continuous functions with compact support and non-zero integrals. The generic points for horocycle flows on hyperbolic surfaces of finite genus are understood, but there are no results in infinite genus. We give such a result, by characterizing the generic points for $\Z^d$--covers.

Generic measures for hyperbolic flows on non compact spaces

We consider the geodesic flow on a complete connected negatively curved manifold. We show that the set of invariant borel probability measures contains a dense $G_δ$-subset consisting of ergodic measures fully supported on the non-wandering set. We also trat the case of non-positively curved manifolds and provide general tools to deal with hyperbolic systems defined on non-compact spaces.

Equidistribution des horocycles d'une surface géométriquement finie

In this work, we show equidistribution properties for the horocycles of a geometrically finite surface with variable negative curvature. If the surface is hyperbolic, we deduce an equidistribution result for the orbits of the horocyclic flow, when the surface has infinite volume.
