Consistency Conditions and the Derivation of Harmonic Structure in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton Theory

Many exact solutions of Einstein-Maxwell and Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory share a common structural pattern in which the metric functions are built from harmonic functions on a specified spatial base, often taken to be flat. We investigate this pattern by considering the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory in arbitrary dimensions, where the dilaton field is non-trivially coupled to the Maxwell field and to a Liouville-type potential proportional to the cosmological parameter. Without imposing either the base geometry or the harmonic form of the metric function in advance, we show that for the generic branch, the field equations force the dilaton couplings to be equal, restrict the spatial base geometry to be Ricci flat, and make the metric function harmonic on this base. The resulting spacetime can then be written in terms of a conformal potential. We also consider a purely spatial branch, which instead leads to a distinct constraint on the coupling constants. These results provide a unified field-equation derivation of the harmonic behavior and conformal structure that appear in several classes of solutions, including multi-center geometries, cosmological solutions, and dynamical black holes.

New class of exact solutions to Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory on four-dimensional Bianchi type IX geometry

We construct new classes of cosmological solution to the five dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory, that are non-stationary and almost conformally regular everywhere. The base geometry for the solutions is the four-dimensional Bianchi type IX geometry. In the theory, the dilaton field is coupled to the electromagnetic field and the cosmological constant term, with two different coupling constants. We consider all possible solutions with different values of the coupling constants, where the cosmological constant takes any positive, negative or zero values. In the ansatzes for the metric, dilaton and electromagnetic fields, we consider dependence on time and two spatial directions. We also consider a special case of the Bianchi type IX geometry, in which the geometry reduces to that of Eguchi-Hanson type II geometry and find a more general solution to the theory.

Spherical inhomogeneous solutions of Einstein and scalar-tensor gravity: a map of the land

We review spherical and inhomogeneous analytic solutions of the field equations of Einstein and of scalar-tensor gravity, including Brans-Dicke theory, non-minimally (possibly conformally) coupled scalar fields, Horndeski, and beyond Horndeski/DHOST gravity. The zoo includes both static and dynamic solutions, asymptotically flat, and asymptotically Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker ones. We minimize overlap with existing books and reviews and we place emphasis on scalar field spacetimes and on geometries that are "general" within certain classes. Relations between various solutions, which have largely emerged during the last decade, are pointed out.

Brans-Dicke analogue of the Roberts geometry

We report a new one-parameter family of spherically symmetric, inhomogeneous, and time-dependent solutions of the vacuum Brans-Dicke field equations which are conformal to the Roberts scalar field geometries of Einstein gravity. The new solution is spherical and time-dependent and contains a naked central singularity. We use it as a seed to generate another two-parameter family of solutions using a known symmetry of vacuum Brans-Dicke gravity.
