Cooperative Vehicle Speed Fault Diagnostics and Correction

Reliable estimation (or measurement) of vehicle states has always been an active topic of research in the automotive industry and academia. Among the vehicle states, vehicle speed has a priority due to its critical importance in traction and stability control. Moreover, the emergence of new generation of communication technologies has brought a new avenue to traditional studies on vehicle estimation and control. To this end, this paper introduces a set of distributed function calculation algorithms for vehicle networks, robust to communication failures. The introduced algorithms enable each vehicle to gather information from other vehicles in the network in a distributed manner. A procedure to use such a bank of information for a single vehicle to diagnose and correct a possible fault in its own speed estimation/measurement is discussed. The functionality and performance of the proposed algorithms are verified via illustrative examples and simulation results.

System-Theoretic Performance Metrics for Low-Inertia Stability of Power Networks

As bulk synchronous generators in the power grid are replaced by distributed generation interfaced through power electronics, inertia is removed from the system, prompting concerns over grid stability. Different metrics are available for quantifying grid stability and performance; however, no theoretical results are available comparing and contrasting these metrics. This paper presents a rigorous system-theoretic study of performance metrics for low-inertia stability. For networks with uniform parameters, we derive explicit expressions for the eigenvalue damping ratios, and for the $\mathcal{H}_{2}$ and $\mathcal{H}_{\infty}$ norms of the linearized swing dynamics, from external power disturbances to different phase/frequency performance outputs. These expressions show the dependence of system performance on inertia constants, damping constants, and on the grid topology. Surprisingly, we find that the $\mathcal{H}_2$ and $\mathcal{H}_{\infty}$ norms can display contradictory behavior as functions of the system inertia, indicating that low-inertia performance depends strongly on the chosen performance metric.

A Graph Theoretic Approach to the Robustness of k-Nearest Neighbor Vehicle Platoons

We consider a graph theoretic approach to the performance and robustness of a platoon of vehicles, where each vehicle communicates with its $k$-nearest neighbors. In particular, we quantify the platoon's stability margin, robustness to disturbances (in terms of system $\mathcal{H}_{\infty}$ norm), and maximum delay tolerance via graph-theoretic notions such as nodal degrees and (grounded) Laplacian matrix eigenvalues. Our results show that there is a trade-off between robustness to time delay and robustness to disturbances. Both first-order dynamics (reference velocity tracking) and second-order dynamics (controlling inter-vehicular distance) are analyzed in this direction. Theoretical contributions are confirmed via simulation results.

Robustness of Leader-Follower Networked Dynamical Systems

We present a graph-theoretic approach to analyzing the robustness of leader-follower consensus dynamics to disturbances and time delays. Robustness to disturbances is captured via the system $\mathcal{H}_2$ and $\mathcal{H}_{\infty}$ norms and robustness to time delay is defined as the maximum allowable delay for the system to remain asymptotically stable. Our analysis is built on understanding certain spectral properties of the grounded Laplacian matrix that play a key role in such dynamics. Specifically, we give graph-theoretic bounds on the extreme eigenvalues of the grounded Laplacian matrix which quantify the impact of disturbances and time-delays on the leader-follower dynamics. We then provide tight characterizations of these robustness metrics in Erdos-Renyi random graphs and random regular graphs. Finally, we view robustness to disturbances and time delay as network centrality metrics, and provide conditions under which a leader in a network optimizes each robustness objective. Furthermore, we propose a sufficient condition under which a single leader optimizes both robustness objectives simultaneously.

On Convexification of Range Measurement Based Sensor and Source Localization Problems

This manuscript is a preliminary pre-print version of a journal submission by the authors, revisiting the problem of range measurement based localization of a signal source or a sensor. The major geometric difficulty of the problem comes from the non-convex structure of optimization tasks associated with range measurements, noting that the set of source locations corresponding to a certain distance measurement by a fixed point sensor is non-convex both in two and three dimensions. Differently from various recent approaches to this localization problem, all starting with a non-convex geometric minimization problem and attempting to devise methods to compensate the non-convexity effects, we suggest a geometric strategy to compose a convex minimization problem first, that is equivalent to the initial non-convex problem, at least in noise-free measurement cases. Once the convex equivalent problem is formed, a wide variety of convex minimization algorithms can be applied. The paper also suggests a gradient based localization algorithm utilizing the introduced convex cost function for localization. Furthermore, the effects of measurement noises are briefly discussed. The design, analysis, and discussions are supported by a set of numerical simulations.

A Minimax Linear Quadratic Gaussian Method for Antiwindup Control Synthesis

In this paper, a dynamic antiwindup compensator design is proposed which augments the main controller and guarantees robust performance in the event of input saturation. This is a two stage process in which first a robust optimal controller is designed for an uncertain linear system which guarantees the internal stability of the closed loop system and provides robust performance in the absence of input saturation. Then a minimax linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) compensator is designed to guarantee the performance in certain domain of attraction, in the presence of input saturation. This antiwindup augmentation only comes into action when plant is subject to input saturation. In order to illustrate the effectiveness of this approach, the proposed method is applied to a tracking control problem for an air-breathing hypersonic flight vehicle (AHFV).

Circumnavigation Using Distance Measurements (Extended Version)

Consider a stationary agent A at an unknown location and a mobile agent B that must move to the vicinity of and then circumnavigate A at a prescribed distance from A. In doing so, B can only measure its distance from A, and knows its own position in some reference frame. This paper considers this problem, which has applications to surveillance or maintaining an orbit. In many of these applications it is difficult for B to directly sense the location of A, e.g. when all that B can sense is the intensity of a signal emitted by A. This intensity does, however provide a measure of the distance. We propose a nonlinear periodic continuous time control law that achieves the objective. Fundamentally, B must exploit its motion to estimate the location of A, and use its best instantaneous estimate of where A resides, to move itself to achieve the ultimate circumnavigation objective. The control law we propose marries these dual goals and is globally exponentially convergent. We show through simulations that it also permits B to approximately achieve this objective when A experiences slow, persistent and potentially nontrivial drift.

Rigidity and persistence for ensuring shape maintenance of multiagent meta formations (ext'd version)

This paper treats the problem of the merging of formations, where the underlying model of a formation is graphical. We first analyze the rigidity and persistence of meta-formations, which are formations obtained by connecting several rigid or persistent formations. Persistence is a generalization to directed graphs of the undirected notion of rigidity. In the context of moving autonomous agent formations, persistence characterizes the efficacy of a directed structure of unilateral distance constraints seeking to preserve a formation shape. We derive then, for agents evolving in a two- or three-dimensional space, the conditions under which a set of persistent formations can be merged into a persistent meta-formation, and give the minimal number of interconnections needed for such a merging. We also give conditions for a meta-formation obtained by merging several persistent formations to be persistent.

Primitive operations for the construction and reorganization of minimally persistent formations

In this paper, we study the construction and transformation of two-dimensional persistent graphs. Persistence is a generalization to directed graphs of the undirected notion of rigidity. In the context of moving autonomous agent formations, persistence characterizes the efficacy of a directed structure of unilateral distances constraints seeking to preserve a formation shape. Analogously to the powerful results about Henneberg sequences in minimal rigidity theory, we propose different types of directed graph operations allowing one to sequentially build any minimally persistent graph (i.e. persistent graph with a minimal number of edges for a given number of vertices), each intermediate graph being also minimally persistent. We also consider the more generic problem of obtaining one minimally persistent graph from another, which corresponds to the on-line reorganization of an autonomous agent formation. We prove that we can obtain any minimally persistent formation from any other one by a sequence of elementary local operations such that minimal persistence is preserved throughout the reorganization process.
