Geometry of particle emission in UrQMD Ar+Sc collisions at SPS energies

Over the past few decades, progress in femtoscopy has been driven by the interplay between experimental measurements and theoretical calculations. Measurements provide data to support the theory, while theoretical predictions guide new measurements. In the recent decade, several experiments have confirmed that the two-particle pion-emitting source is well described by Lévy alpha-stable distributions. To enable theoretical interpretation, phenomenological simulations have been done at RHIC and LHC energies, in large systems such as Au+Au or Pb+Pb, using various available heavy-ion collision models. However, such simulations have not been done in intermediate systems. In this paper, we investigate three-dimensional two-pion pair source distributions from $^{40}$Ar+$^{45}$Sc central collisions at SPS energies, generated with the Ultra-Relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics Monte-Carlo event generator. Supplemented by a validation of the simulated hadronic spectra, we find that the pair source can be described with Lévy-stable distributions. We subsequently interpret the physical meaning of the extracted Lévy parameters corresponding to the spatial scale, shape, and strength of the source. Our results form a baseline for future experimental measurements in intermediate systems.

Femtoscopy using Lévy-distributed sources at NA61/SHINE

In the recent years, research studies in high-energy physics have confirmed the creation of the strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma (sQGP) in ultra-relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions. NA61/SHINE at CERN SPS investigates hadronic matter properties by varying collision energy ($\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}} \approx 5.3, 6.2, 7.7, 8.8, 12$, and 16.8 GeV) and systems (such as p+p, p+Pb, Be+Be, Ar+Sc, Xe+La, Pb+Pb). Utilizing femtoscopic correlations, we can unveil the space-time structure of the hadron emitting source. Our focus is on femtoscopic correlations in small to intermediate systems, comparing measurements with source calculations based on Lévy-distributed sources, to explore the pair transverse mass dependence of the Lévy source parameters. The Lévy exponent $α$ is of particular significance, which characterizes the shape of the source and may be connected to the critical exponent $η$ near the critical point. Our analysis will reveal that the Lévy shape parameter, $α$, has a slight non-monotonic behaviour as a function of collision energy and that we see a deviation from Gaussian sources. Finally, it will be shown that there is no indication of the critical point at any of the investigated energies.

Femtoscopy at NA61/SHINE using symmetric Lévy sources in central $^{40}$Ar+$^{45}$Sc from 40$A$ GeV/$c$ to 150$A$ GeV/$c$

In the recent decades of high energy physics research, it was demonstrated that strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma (sQGP) is created in ultra-relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions. Investigation and understanding of properties of the hadronic matter is among the important goals of NA61/SHINE collaboration at CERN SPS. Mapping of the phase diagram is achieved by varying the collision energy (5 GeV $<\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}<$17 GeV) and by changing the collision system (p+p, p+Pb, Be+Be, Ar+Sc, Xe+La, Pb+Pb). We report on the measurement of femtoscopic correlations in intermediate system at intermediate SPS energies. Interpreting the results of measurements within the symmetric Lévy source formalism, we discuss the values of Lévy source parameters as a function of average pair transverse mass. One of the physical parameters is particularly important, the Lévy exponent $α$, which describes the shape of the source and may be related to the critical exponent $η$ in the proximity of the critical point. Therefore, measuring it may shed light on the location of the critical endpoint of the QCD phase diagram.

Femtoscopy with Lévy sources at NA61/SHINE

In the recent decades of high-energy physics research, it was demonstrated that strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma (sQGP) is created in ultra-relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions. Investigation and understanding of the properties of the hadronic matter are among the most important goals of the NA61/SHINE collaboration at CERN SPS. Mapping of the phase diagram is achieved by varying the collision energy (5 GeV $\sqrt{s_{NN}}<17$ GeV) and by changing the collision system ($p$+$p$, $p$+Pb, Be+Be, Ar+Sc, Xe+La, Pb+Pb). Femtoscopic correlations reveal the space-time structure of the hadron emitting source. In this article, we report on the measurement of femtoscopic correlations in small to intermediate systems. Comparing the measurements to calculations based on symmetric Lévy sources, we discuss the results on Lévy source parameters as a function of average pair transverse mass. One of the physical parameters is of particular importance, the Lévy exponent $α$, which describes the shape of the source and may be related to the critical exponent $η$ in the proximity of the critical point. Therefore, measuring it may shed light on the location of the critical endpoint of the QCD phase diagram.

Femtoscopy analysis in small systems at NA61/SHINE

Recent measurements of femtoscopic correlations at NA61/SHINE unravel that the shape of the particle emitting source is not Gaussian. The measurements are based on Lévy-stable symmetric sources, and we discuss the average pair transverse mass dependence of the source parameters. One of the parameters, the Lévy exponent $α$, is of particular importance. It describes the shape of the source, which, in the vicinity of the critical point of the QCD phase diagram, may be related to the critical exponent $η$. Its measurement hence may contribute to the search for and characterization of the critical point of the phase diagram.

Femtoscopic correlation measurement with symmetric Lévy-type source at NA61/SHINE

Measuring quantum-statistical, femtoscopic (including final state interactions) momentum correlations with final state interactions in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions reveal the space-time structure of the particle-emitting source created. In this paper, we report NA61/SHINE measurements of femtoscopic correlations of identified pion pairs and describe said correlations based on symmetric Lévy-type sources in Ar+Sc collisions at 150A GeV/c. We investigate the transverse mass dependence of the Lévy-type source parameters and discuss their possible interpretations.

Levy HBT results at NA61/SHINE

Bose-Einstein (or HBT) momentum correlations reveal the space-time structure of the particle emitting source created in high energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. In this paper we present the latest NA61/SHINE measurements of Bose-Einstein correlations of identified pion pairs and their description based on Levy distributed sources in Be+Be collisions at 150A GeV/c. We investigate the transverse mass dependence of the Levy source parameters and discuss their possible interpretations.

NA61/SHINE results on Bose-Einstein correlations

One of the main goals of NA61/SHINE is the investigation of the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. NA61/SHINE observes collisions of various nuclei at different energies, allowing to study the same phenomena and observables in vastly different conditions. One of the observables related to the quark-hadron transition is the Bose-Einstein momentum correlation function of identical pions, related to the space-time structure of pion emission. In this paper we report on such measurements in Be+Be collisions at an SPS beam momentum of 150A GeV/c. Our correlation functions can be statistically well described with Levy-distributed sources, hence we also study the mT dependence of the Levy source parameters, and discuss their possible interpretations.

NA61/SHINE Levy HBT measurements in Be+Be collisions at 150A GeV/c

The program of NA61/SHINE allows for the investigation of the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. The nature of the quark-hadron transition can be studied through analyzing the space-time structure of the hadron emission source via the measurement of Bose-Einstein momentum correlations. These can be described by correlation functions based on Levy-distributed sources. This report presents the performance plots of Bose-Einstein correlation analysis in Be+Be collisions at 150A GeV/c beam momentum. The transverse mass dependence of the Levy source parameters and their possible interpretations are discussed.
