On ratios of Chern numbers for complex hyperbolic branched covers

In this paper we prove that, at least in even complex dimensions, the ratio of Chern numbers for a closed complex hyperbolic branched cover manifold are not all equal to the corresponding ratio of Chern numbers for a closed complex hyperbolic manifold. This leads to an answer for a question posed by Deraux and Seshadri, and proves that an almost $1/4$-pinched metric constructed by the author in a previous article is not K\"{a}hler.

An explicit description of the K\"{a}hler-Einstein metrics of Guenancia-Hamenst\"{a}dt

Fine and Premoselli (FP) constructed the first examples of manifolds that do not admit a locally symmetric metric but do admit a negatively curved Einstein metric. The manifolds here are hyperbolic branched covers like those used by Gromov and Thurston, and the construction of their model Einstein metric is a variation of the hyperbolic metric written in polar coordinates. Very recently, Guenancia and Hamenst\"{a}dt (GH) proved the existence of the first examples of manifolds that are not locally symmetric but admit a negatively curved K\"{a}hler-Einstein metric. The GH metrics are realized on complex hyperbolic branched covers constructed by Stover and Toledo. In this article we generalize the construction of FP to the complex hyperbolic setting and show that this yields a negatively curved Einstein metric that asymptotically approaches the metric of GH.

High dimensional hyperbolic Coxeter groups that virtually fiber

This paper provides an iterative procedure for constructing hyperbolic Coxeter groups that virtually fiber over $\mathbb{Z}$ that is flexible enough to yield infinitely many isomorphism classes in each virtual cohomological dimension (vcd) $n\geq 2$. Our procedure combines results of Jankiewicz, Norin, and Wise with a generalization of a construction due to Osajda involving a new simplicial thickening process. We also give a topological argument showing that the vcd of the right-angled Coxeter groups produced by our construction increases by exactly one with each iteration, guaranteeing that our process produces examples of every vcd.

Curvature Operators on K\"{a}hler Manifolds

We prove that there exist K\"{a}hler manifolds that are not homotopy equivalent to a quotient of complex hyperbolic space but which admit a Riemannian metric with nonpositive curvature operator. This shows that K\"{a}hler manifolds do not satisfy the same type of rigidity with respect to the curvature operator as quaternionic hyperbolic and Cayley hyperbolic manifolds and are thus more similar to real hyperbolic manifolds in this setting. Along the way we also calculate explicit values for the eigenvalues of the curvature operator with respect to the standard complex hyperbolic metric.

K\"{a}hler manifolds with an almost $1/4$-pinched metric

In this paper we construct an almost negatively $1/4$-pinched Riemannian metric on a class of compact manifolds recently discovered by Stover and Toledo in [17]. It is known that these manifolds are K\"{a}hler and not locally symmetric. These are the first known examples of not locally symmetric K\"{a}hler manifolds admitting such a metric and, via the result of Hernandez [9] and Yau and Zheng [18], these manifolds cannot admit a negatively quarter-pinched Riemannian metric. This metric is also interesting because it is a generalization to the complex hyperbolic setting of the famous pinched metric constructed by Gromov and Thurston in [8].

Warped product metrics on hyperbolic and complex hyperbolic manifolds

In this paper we study warped-product metrics on manifolds of the form $X \setminus Y$, where $X$ denotes either $\mathbb{H}^n$ or $\mathbb{C} \mathbb{H}^n$, and $Y$ is a totally geodesic submanifold with arbitrary codimension. The main results that we prove are curvature formulas for these metrics on $X \setminus Y$ expressed in spherical coordinates about $Y$. We also discuss past and potential future applications of these formulas.

Synthetic Geometry in Hyperbolic Simplices

Let $\tau$ be an $n$-simplex and let $g$ be a metric on $\tau$ with constant curvature $\kappa$. The lengths that $g$ assigns to the edges of $\tau$, along with the value of $\kappa$, uniquely determine all of the geometry of $(\tau, g)$. In this paper we focus on hyperbolic simplices ($\kappa = -1$) and develop geometric formulas which rely only on the edge lengths of $\tau$. Our main results are distance and projection formulas in hyperbolic simplices, as well as a projection formula in Euclidean simplices. We also provide analogous formulas in simplices with arbitrary constant curvature $\kappa$.

Real hyperbolic hyperplane complements in the complex hyperbolic plane

This paper studies Riemannian manifolds of the form $M \setminus S$, where $M^4$ is a complete four dimensional Riemannian manifold with finite volume whose metric is modeled on the complex hyperbolic plane $\mathbb{C} \mathbb{H}^2$, and $S$ is a compact totally geodesic codimension two submanifold whose induced Riemannian metric is modeled on the real hyperbolic plane $\mathbb{H}^2$. In this paper we write the metric on $\mathbb{C} \mathbb{H}^2$ in polar coordinates about $S$, compute formulas for the components of the curvature tensor in terms of arbitrary warping functions (Theorem 7.1), and prove that there exist warping functions that yield a complete finite volume Riemannian metric on $M \setminus S$ whose sectional curvature is bounded above by a negative constant (Theorem 1.1(1)). The cases of $M \setminus S$ modeled on $\mathbb{H}^n \setminus \mathbb{H}^{n-2}$ and $\mathbb{C} \mathbb{H}^n \setminus \mathbb{C} \mathbb{H}^{n-1}$ were studied by Belegradek in [Bel12] and [Bel11], respectively. One may consider this work as "part 3" to this sequence of papers.

Approximating continuous maps by isometries

The Nash-Kuiper Theorem states that the collection of $C^1$-isometric embeddings from a Riemannian manifold $M^n$ into $\mathbb{E}^N$ is $C^0$-dense within the collection of all smooth 1-Lipschitz embeddings provided that $n < N$. This result is now known to be a consequence of Gromov's more general $h$-principle. There have been some recent extensions of the Nash-Kuiper Theorem to Euclidean polyhedra, which in some sense provide a very specialized discretization of the $h$-principle. In this paper we will discuss these recent results and provide generalizations to the setting of isometric embeddings of spaces endowed with indefinite metrics into Minkowski space. The new observation is that, when dealing with Minkowski space, the assumption "1-Lipschitz" can be removed. Thus, we obtain results about isometric embeddings that are $C^0$-dense within the collection of {\it all} continuous maps.

On the isometric embedding problem for length metric spaces

We prove that every proper $n$-dimensional length metric space admits an "approximate isometric embedding" into Lorentzian space $\mathbb{R}^{3n+6,1}$. By an "approximate isometric embedding" we mean an embedding which preserves the energy functional on a prescribed set of geodesics connecting a dense set of points.

Simplicial isometric embeddings of indefinite metric polyhedra

In this paper, isometric embedding results of Greene, Gromov and Rokhlin are extended to what are called "indefinite metric polyhedra". Two definitions for an indefinite metric polyhedron are given, an intuitive definition and a more useful definition. The more useful definition is used to show that every indefinite metric polyhedron (with the maximal degree of every vertex bounded above) admits a simplicial isometric embedding into Minkowski space of an appropriate signature. This result is then used to show that the two definitions coincide. A simple example is given to show that the dimension bounds in the compact case are essentially sharp. Finally it is shown that if we relax our embedding conditions to be pl instead of simplicial, then the necessary dimension bounds can be reduced to a surprisingly low signature.

Combinatorial systolic inequalities

We establish combinatorial versions of various classical systolic inequalities. For a smooth triangulation of a closed smooth manifold, the minimal number of edges in a homotopically non-trivial loop contained in the $1$-skeleton gives an integer called the combinatorial systole. The number of top-dimensional simplices in the triangulation gives another integer called the combinatorial volume. We show that a class of smooth manifolds satisfies a systolic inequality for all Riemannian metrics if and only if it satisfies a corresponding combinatorial systolic inequality for all smooth triangulations. Along the way, we show that any closed Riemannian manifold has a smooth triangulation which "remembers" the geometry of the Riemannian metric, and conversely, that every smooth triangulation gives rise to Riemannian metrics which encode the combinatorics of the triangulation. We give a few applications of these results.
